Design And Analysis Of Descent-To-Landing Navigation Incorporating Terrain Effects, Kari C. Ward, Gunner S. Fritsch, J. Cameron Helmuth, Kyle J. Demars, James S. Mccabe

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigated the ability of a navigation filter to process multiple terrain-based sensors, such as slant-range, slant-speed, and terrain relative navigation sensors, during a descent-to-landing scenario to estimate the state of a landing vehicle. The filtering technique leveraged was based upon a factorized form of the multiplicative extended Kalman filter, and terrain-based measurements were fused with star camera and inertial measurement unit sensor returns to estimate the position, velocity, and attitude of the landing vehicle. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to assess the performance of the navigation filter along a lunar descent trajectory, as well as the consistency …

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

From the 1850's until the 1960's, the Central Railroad of New Jersey was among several major railways shipping anthracite and bituminous coal to the New York City area, transferring coal from railcar to barge at its extensive rail yard and port facility in Jersey City. The 490 ha Liberty State Park was developed on the site after the rail yard closed, but a ca. 100 ha brownfield zone within the park remains off limits to visitors pending future remediation. As part of an environmental forensic and industrial archeological investigation of this zone, the present study characterizes anthracite and bituminous coal …

The Role Of Candidate Gender And Political Support: An Experimental Approach To Understanding Voter Perceptions And Support For Female Presidential Candidates, Jenna Nichole Laurin Jan 2020

The Role Of Candidate Gender And Political Support: An Experimental Approach To Understanding Voter Perceptions And Support For Female Presidential Candidates, Jenna Nichole Laurin

Theses and Dissertations

Female candidates are at a disadvantage in the political sphere, facing underrepresentation and stereotype hurdles at all levels of elected office. While female candidates have overcome some of these obstacles and won elections at the state and local levels, there has never been a female candidate elected President. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether female and male candidates are judged differently on measures of competence, warmth, traits, and willingness to vote. Employing a 2 (candidate gender) x 2 (participant gender) x 2 (candidate party) manipulation, 370 participants read a fictitious article about Presidential candidates and rated …

A Critical Race Examination Of The Lived Experiences Of Persistent African American Students At A Predominantly White Community College, Elena Favela Naca Jan 2020

A Critical Race Examination Of The Lived Experiences Of Persistent African American Students At A Predominantly White Community College, Elena Favela Naca

Theses and Dissertations

For well over a century, African Americans have fought for equal rights to employment, prosperity, political power and freedom. Earning an education was the way forward. Over time, legislative and institutional policies have created greater access to education for racialized individuals. Yet, African American students remain the most underserved population, and among the lowest in degree attainment across ethnic groups. Decades of research literature places blame on students and families, highlighting student deficiencies. Far fewer explanations in the literature point to institutional barriers that perpetuate practices that place African American students at a disadvantage. Critical Race Theory (CRT) offers a …

Influences On The Development Of Ethical Decision-Making In Speech-Language Pathology Students: A Phenomenological Study Of Graduate Students And Clinical Supervisors, Joni K. Mehrhoff

Theses and Dissertations

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) serve as members of the interprofessional team for complex patients. As such, SLPs are required to uphold ethical practices and respond to the needs of patients, their families, healthcare organizations, and the interprofessional team. Speech-language pathology graduates are part of the ethical healthcare team during clinical experiences. Yet, limited research is available to define the development of student ethical decision-making. The purpose of this study was to explore what influences SLP graduate students and clinical supervisors ascribe to in the development of ethical decision-making. Participants included five SLP graduate students and six SLP clinical supervisors from accredited …

Montana Coaches' Perceptions On Including Transgender Athletes In High School Interscholastic Sports And Its Effect On Team Chemistry, David L. Woods Ii Jan 2020

Montana Coaches' Perceptions On Including Transgender Athletes In High School Interscholastic Sports And Its Effect On Team Chemistry, David L. Woods Ii

Theses and Dissertations

The eligibility of transgender students to participate in high school athletic sports is a polarizing topic in the United States of America. Questions of fairness within each competitive sport, along with precedents set in law and policy, both by the United States and by International Sporting Organizations such as the International Olympic Committee, shape arguments for or against transgender high school students' eligibility. Each state faces the decision of whether to base high school transgender athletes' eligibility in high school sports according to their gender identity, or their sex assigned at birth.

The study aimed to identify Montana high school …

How Affect Rhetoric And A Changing Digital Landscape Shape Youth Digital Social Movements Of The Twenty-First Century, Amanda Frances Pasierb Jan 2020

How Affect Rhetoric And A Changing Digital Landscape Shape Youth Digital Social Movements Of The Twenty-First Century, Amanda Frances Pasierb

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores three youth digital social movements, which have taken place throughout the twenty-first century: the Invisible Children movement of Uganda, the Bring Back Our Girls movement of Nigeria, and the Never Again movement of the United States. Using rhetorical analysis of each movement, I explore the relationship each has with youth, digital, social movement, and activism. Specifically, I seek to answer the following research questions: (1) with youth in the forefront of each movement, how have the movements utilized affective rhetoric to promote and gain support, and (2) how have youth digital social movements evolved throughout the twenty-first …

Aqueous Imbibition With Enhanced Contact Area Approaches To Extract Oil From The Bakken Formation, Jin Zhang Jan 2020

Aqueous Imbibition With Enhanced Contact Area Approaches To Extract Oil From The Bakken Formation, Jin Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The techniques of horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing enable oil production from low-permeable shale, sandstone and carbonate rock formations. However, the extremely low permeability and porosity properties lead a sharp declination of oil production and a low oil recovery factor (typically, 5-15% of original oil in place) as reservoir pressures dropping. Surfactant EOR (enhanced oil recovery) has been considered as one of the best options for geological challenging formations. In our previous studies, we developed a method using surfactant formulation spontaneous imbibition to stimulate the oil recovery from tight formations through wettability alteration and the interfacial tension (IFT) reduction. However, …

Evaluation Of Pediatric Acute Ulcerative Colitis Management Protocol, Samantha Simons Jan 2020

Evaluation Of Pediatric Acute Ulcerative Colitis Management Protocol, Samantha Simons

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Pediatric patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) represent a high-risk population with severe disease that requires hospitalization. This study evaluates the impact of implementing an acute UC management protocol on 39 pediatric patients. After analysis, significant trends were shown for admitted pediatric patients post-protocol implementation, helping to coordinate multidisciplinary care sooner during a hospital stay. The patients were more likely to have a surgical consult, and the surgical consult was completed closer upon admission. The median length of hospital stay did not change, total parenteral nutrition use was increased, and oral steroids upon discharge were decreased. Anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha was …

Nursing education reform is needed for today’s generational mix of pre-licensure nursing students to prepare them to effectively care for clients’ ever-evolving healthcare needs. This mixed-methods, quasi-experimental study was designed to measure if the use of unfolding case studies (UCS) in a traditional classroom setting (TCS) would (a) enhance critical thinking skills of the experimental group more than the control group as measured by the Health Science Reasoning Test (HSRT), (b) explore if course content examinations were higher in the experimental group versus the control group, (c) explore the perceptions of a subset of Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) pre-licensure …

Word-Final /T/-Release And Linguistic Style: An Investigation Of The Speech Of Two Jewish Women From Metro Detroit, Janet Leppala Jan 2020

Word-Final /T/-Release And Linguistic Style: An Investigation Of The Speech Of Two Jewish Women From Metro Detroit, Janet Leppala

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Variationist sociolinguistics is more complex than meets the eye. There are many possible explanations as to why a person uses some linguistic form over another. This paper will compare the use of the word-final /t/-release variant in the speech of two Jewish women from metro Detroit who were born two years apart and who have similar socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Despite superficial similarities between the speakers, their use of the variant differs considerably—with one speaker using the variant over 15 times more than the other. Building on existing literature on Jewish American speech and on /t/-release, this study will compare …

Coastal wetlands such as mangrove forests and salt marshes provide a range of important benefits to people, broadly defined as ecosystem services. These include provisioning services such as fuelwood and food, regulating services such as carbon sequestration and wave attenuation, and various tangible and intangible cultural services. However, strong negative perceptions of coastal wetlands also exist, often driven by the perceived or actual ecosystem disservices that they also produce. These can include odour, a sense of danger, and their real or perceived role in vector and disease transmission (e.g. malaria). This review provides an introduction to the ecosystem services and …

Physical Activity In Aging: Biological Outcomes, Functional Autonomy, And Policy Implications, Nathan Albert Schuler Jan 2020

Physical Activity In Aging: Biological Outcomes, Functional Autonomy, And Policy Implications, Nathan Albert Schuler

Theses

A 2016 study concluded that the elderly spend 2.5 times the national average on health services (De Nardi 2016). Despite consisting of only 14 percent of the United States population, the elderly accounted for 34 percent of all medical spending, and accounted for 73 percent of all deaths (De Nardi 2016). In addition, current projections estimate that with the aging of the baby boomer generation, the percentage of the population that is older than 65 will swell to approximately 20 percent of the population by 2030 (Ortman 2014). If the medical spending holds, this will coincide with massive increases in …

Root Failure Analysis In Meshed Tree Networks, Shashank Rudroju Jan 2020

Root Failure Analysis In Meshed Tree Networks, Shashank Rudroju

Theses

Mesh topologies play a vital role in switched networks. Broadcast storms due to the loops in Mesh Networks are a major concern in switched networks. Logical spanning trees are constructed using algorithms like spanning tree algorithm to avoid loops and hence address the broadcast storm problem. However, in the event of a topology change or a link failure in the network, it takes time to converge and construct new spanning tree to forward frames. Link State routing and other protocols like Rapid Spanning Tree protocol[2][19] were introduced to address the problems of high convergence times in the basic spanning tree …
