Lactobacilli are dominant members of the “healthy” female urogenital microbiota. One of these species, Lactobacillus jensenii, is routinely identified in the urinary microbiota of women both with and without urinary tract symptoms. In March 2020, the new bacterial species Lactobacillus mulieris was introduced, and phylogenetic and average nucleotide identity analysis identified eight L. jensenii strains that should be classified as members of the L. mulieris species. This prompted our phylogenomic study of all publicly available L. jensenii and L. mulieris genome sequences. While there is little variation in the 16S rRNA gene sequences, the core genome shows a clear distinction …

Cerebral malaria (CM) is the deadliest form of severe Plasmodium infections. Currently, we have limited understanding of the mechanisms by which Plasmodium parasites induce CM. The mouse model of CM, experimental CM (ECM), induced by infection with the rodent parasite, Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbANKA) has been extensively used to study the pathophysiology of CM. Recent genomic analyses revealed that the coding regions of PbANKA and the closely related Plasmodium berghei NK65 (PbNK65), that does not cause ECM, differ in only 21 single nucleotide polymorphysims (SNPs). Thus, the SNP-containing genes might contribute to the pathogenesis of ECM. Although the majority of …

Targeting Hypoxia Sensitizes Tnbc To Cisplatin And Promotes Inhibition Of Both Bulk And Cancer Stem Cells, Andrew Sulaiman, Sarah Mcgarry, Jason Chambers, Emil Al-Kadi, Alexandra Phan, Li Li, Karan Mediratta, Jim Dimitroulakos, Christina Addison, Xuguang Li, Lisheng Wang Aug 2020

Development of targeted therapies for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an unmet medical need. Cisplatin has demonstrated its promising potential for the treatment of TNBC in clinical trials; however, cisplatin treatment is associated with hypoxia that, in turn, promotes cancer stem cell (CSC) enrichment and drug resistance. Therapeutic approaches to attenuate this may lead to increased cisplatin efficacy in the clinic for the treatment of TNBC. In this report we analyzed clinical datasets of TNBC and found that TNBC patients possessed higher levels of EGFR and hypoxia gene expression. A similar expression pattern was also observed in cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer …

The Role Of Activation In The Relationship Between Power Posing And Task Performance, Jeremy Walter Marshall Aug 2020

The Role Of Activation In The Relationship Between Power Posing And Task Performance, Jeremy Walter Marshall

Theses

This research analyzed the psychophysiological effects that expansive and contractive body poses have on the human body. Participants were asked to hold either an expansive or contractive body pose for two minutes prior to participating in a Color-Word Interference Test (CWT, which induced stress) and a gambling task (which measured risk tolerance). Heart rate variability (HRV) and electrodermal activity (EDA) for each participant was measured to gauge stress throughout the experiment. Positive and negative affect scales were used to measure mood before and after posing. Results of this research did not support our hypotheses, which were: 1. Expansive, dominant poses …

Integrative Species Delimitation And Taxonomic Status Of The Scorpion Genus Vaejovis Koch, 1836 (Vaejovidae) In The Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona, Emma E. Jochim, Lillian-Lee M. Broussard, Brent E. Hendrixson

Euscorpius

Scorpions belonging to the Vaejovis vorhiesi species complex are widely distributed throughout the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Most species are endemic to single mountain ranges but two species, Vaejovis deboerae Ayrey, 2009 and V. brysoni Ayrey & Webber, 2013, have been documented from the Santa Catalina Mountains in Arizona. We reevaluated the taxonomic diversity of these scorpions by integrating data from several different sources. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that scorpions in the Santa Catalina Mountains are monophyletic but comprise two divergent mitochondrial lineages that overlap at the type locality of V. deboerae. We failed to detect congruence between …

Substrate Properties And Fertilizer Rates On Yield Responses Of Lettuce In A Vertical Growth System, Zadarreyal Wiggins, Onyekachukwu Akaeze, Dilip Nandwani, Anthony Witcher

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

The increased demand for food and the challenge for space for agriculture production in urban centers have made the vertical growth system an interesting trend. Agriculture is no longer only the horizontal, traditional, and soil grown method. Urban agriculture has created ways for inner city growers to be able to farm in a restricted space. Vertical farming is the practice of growing crops, especially leafy vegetables such as lettuce, in vertically stacked layers, as this results in significantly higher plant population per unit area. Two research trials were conducted in the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019 to …

Current Prospects And Outlook Of Crispr/Cas Technology In Clinical Therapy, James Piper Aug 2020

Current Prospects And Outlook Of Crispr/Cas Technology In Clinical Therapy, James Piper

Theses and Graduate Projects

Gene editing capabilities have expanded enormously since researchers first demonstrated the robust, accurate, and efficient endonuclease activity of the CRISPR/Cas riboprotein enzyme. Since this gene editing technique was first described in 2013, the prospect of gene therapy as a viable clinical tool has improved immensely. CRISPR/Cas techniques and the methods by which they are delivered into cells, have evolved rapidly since the technology􏰿s inception, and successful, intentional genetic alterations of numerous mammalian cell lines have been reported. As a research tool, CRISPR/Cas9 has already proven itself indispensable in a brief period of time. While there are not numerous clinical trials …

Treasure Hunting: An Exploratory Study Of How Designers And Scientists Identify Potential Collaborative Projects, Nolwenn Maudet, Sion Asada, Miles Pennington Aug 2020

Treasure Hunting: An Exploratory Study Of How Designers And Scientists Identify Potential Collaborative Projects, Nolwenn Maudet, Sion Asada, Miles Pennington

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design and science collaborations are becoming increasingly common. Yet we have little understanding of how both designers and scientists identify what makes a good collaborative project brief, a phase we call treasure hunting. We conducted two studies with 18 designers and 10 scientists to better understand this mechanism: how do designers generate ideas from laboratories and how scientists perceive these ideas? We found that designers’ strategies rely on identifying the uniqueness of the laboratory’s research and their long-term vision. We also identified four strategies to ideate from the laboratories’ research: finding new application domains, bringing the research to the hands …

Design And Science: A Workshop-Based Approach For Identifying Commercial Opportunities In Universities, David Mesa, Christine Thong, Charles Ranscombe, Blair Kuys

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Universities are expected to play an important role as drivers of innovation and economic growth. Despite efforts to match these expectations, the commercialisation of scientific research remains poor. Issues in the commercialisation of research that have been identified in previous literature include scientists’ lack of business skills, poor understanding of industry needs and lack of funding for development. However, there is a lack of studies proposing practical tools to bridge the gap between research and the market. Studies analysing the activities of certain technology companies propose using workshops to assist technology innovation. However, the method for using these workshops in …

Phantom Volume: A Spatial Explanation For Domestic Clutter, Heidi Ellis Overhill Aug 2020

Phantom Volume: A Spatial Explanation For Domestic Clutter, Heidi Ellis Overhill

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Philosophical assumptions influence empirical design. For example, physical shape is typically described in terms of ‘positive form and ‘negative space.’ Here, a third type of shape is proposed, called “phantom volume,” comprised of the geometrically-predictable forms delineated by movements of a product, its parts, accessories, the user’s body, and the cone of vision. Phantom volumes are critical to product function, because things cannot be used if access is blocked. This observation suggests that domestic “clutter” may be defined as the physical effect created when the phantom volume of one object is obstructed by the positive form of another — proposing …

A Theoretical Model Of Similarity Judgment Based On Ideas Of Form And Spirit, Yifeng Wen, Ding-Bang Luh, Chi-Hua Wu Aug 2020

A Theoretical Model Of Similarity Judgment Based On Ideas Of Form And Spirit, Yifeng Wen, Ding-Bang Luh, Chi-Hua Wu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Similarity is demonstrably important across many areas of cognition. At present, the main idea is that the similarity of a pair of objects increase with its commonalities and decrease with its difference. However, it’s difficult to reasonably explain some counterintuitive situations that often occur. For example, people might find that someone looks similar with a dog, even though most shared features are dissimilar. Inspired by the ideas of form and spirit, we speculate that some key features of objects may have a greater impact on similarity judgment than the others. Therefore, this paper proposed a theoretical model of similarity judgment …

Designing By Frontline Tobacco-Prevention Practitioners: How Can Design Thinking Workshop Affect The Development Of Public Health Strategies?, Eric Chen-F Hsieh, Min-Yuan Ma, Fu-Yu Lin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design thinking features a distinct process for probing deep problems and ensuring that the right questions are being addressed and feasible solutions proposed. Recently, Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration took on design thinking as a method for redesigning several health-related public strategies. Although design thinking has been widely applied in several realms, more studies need to be conducted to ascertain its full effect. Therefore, this study attempts to understand how a Design Thinking Workshop could affect the development of public health strategies by using adolescent tobacco prevention as a case for research. The two-phase study included data collection and analysis for …

Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne Aug 2020

Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Waste is a material problem and a cultural condition. Many philosophies and visualisation resources exist for addressing waste such as waste hierarchies and circular economy diagrams. These diagrams, however, are not always enough to represent the intrinsic complexities related to waste systems or the interactions that exist between current and potential interventions. In this paper we contribute an original framework for understanding waste and propose a visualisation of waste as a spectrum of possibilities rather than as a series of discrete, disconnected interventions. The Waste Rainbow invites users to “plot” interventions and to think about these interventions and their relationships …

Signaling lipid mediators released from 5 lipoxygenase (5LO) pathways influence both bone and muscle cells, interfering in their proliferation and differentiation capacities. A major limitation to studying inflammatory signaling pathways in bone and muscle healing is the inadequacy of available animal models. We developed a surgical injury model in the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle and femur in 129/SvEv littermates mice to study simultaneous musculoskeletal (MSK) healing in male and female, young (3 months) and aged (18 months) WT mice compared to mice lacking 5LO (5LOKO). MSK defects were surgically created using a 1-mm punch device in the VA muscle followed …

The Need For Interdisciplinary Collaborations, Susan Ganter, Bill Haver Aug 2020

The Need For Interdisciplinary Collaborations, Susan Ganter, Bill Haver

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The challenge faced by developers of collegiate mathematics curricula is to determine—and then provide—the mathematical experiences that are true to the spirit of mathematics yet also relevant to students’ futures in other fields. The Curriculum Foundations Project (CF) of MAA/CRAFTY was designed to gather input from partner disciplines through a series of 22 two- to three-day workshops. Each workshop resulted in a report directed to the mathematics community, summarizing the workshop’s recommendations and conclusions. One message from the partner disciplines appeared again and again: introductory collegiate mathematics courses should focus on giving students an understanding of fundamental mathematical topics while …

Novel Use Of Fresh Frozen Plasma In Treating Hereditary Angioedema: A Success Story From Pakistan, Amber Sabeen Ahmed, Sidra Fayyaz

Section of Internal Medicine

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) due to a C1-esterase inhibitor(C1-INH) deficiency is a rare and potentially life-threatening disorder. It is characterized by an episodic and self-limiting increase in vascular permeability. The condition manifests itself as recurrent attacks of swelling in any part of the body. The angioedema can cause the involvement of the respiratory tract, skin, and gastrointestinal tract. Laryngeal involvement can make the condition life-threatening. It does not respond well to conventional angioedema therapy of steroids, adrenaline, and antihistamines. The targeted therapy for HAE consists of plasma-derived or recombinant C1-INH, ecallantide, and icatibant or bradykinin receptor antagonist. In the absence of …

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) affect cancer progression and therapy. Ovarian carcinoma often metastasizes to the peritoneal cavity. Here, we found two peritoneal macrophage subsets in mice bearing ID8 ovarian cancer based on the Tim-4 (T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain containing 4) expression. Tim-4+ TAMs were embryonically originated and locally sustained while Tim-4- TAMs were replenished from circulating monocytes. Tim-4+ TAMs, but not Tim-4- TAMs, promoted tumor growth in vivo. Relative to Tim-4- TAMs, Tim-4+ TAMs manifested high oxidative phosphorylation and adapted mitophagy to alleviate oxidative stress. High levels of arginase-1 in Tim-4+ TAMs contributed to potent mitophagy activities via weakened mTORC1 …
