Battle Of The Buttercups: Investigating Hybrid Zone Dynamics In A Ranunculus Species Complex, Jessica Persinger Aug 2020

Battle Of The Buttercups: Investigating Hybrid Zone Dynamics In A Ranunculus Species Complex, Jessica Persinger

Dissertations and Theses

Plants pose a well-known challenge to the biological species concept because hybridization is a common occurrence. Range dynamics have a crucial role in determining whether species are given the opportunity to interbreed or not. Successful hybridization can be of particular concern when considering range-limited species and their persistence. In my thesis research, I examine the apparent hybrid zone between the southern Oregon endemic Ranunculus austro-oreganus, a candidate threatened species due to its limited range, and its widespread congener, Ranunculus occidentalis, whose range spans from California to Alaska. The discovered contact zone was recognized in populations which contained apparent …

Near Simultaneous Laser Scanning Confocal And Atomic Force Microscopy (Conpokal) On Live Cells, Joree N. Sandin, Surya P. Aryal, Thomas E. Wilkop, Christopher I. Richards, Martha E. Grady

Physiology Faculty Publications

Techniques available for micro- and nano-scale mechanical characterization have exploded in the last few decades. From further development of the scanning and transmission electron microscope, to the invention of atomic force microscopy, and advances in fluorescent imaging, there have been substantial gains in technologies that enable the study of small materials. Conpokal is a portmanteau that combines confocal microscopy with atomic force microscopy (AFM), where a probe "pokes" the surface. Although each technique is extremely effective for the qualitative and/or quantitative image collection on their own, Conpokal provides the capability to test with blended fluorescence imaging and mechanical characterization. Designed …

DRS Biennial Conference Series

With an increase in international projects, comes increased opportunities for design researchers to contribute to research that tackles Sustainable Development Goals in the Global South. Nevertheless, the role of design within this context is disparate and detached, with very limited design literature on the subject. As such, this paper has identified the key challenges and barriers that design researchers face in conducting and applying design research in a Global South Context. Based on a workshop with design research experts doing research in Global South, the literature and lessons learnt from running a design-led project in Ghana, we are presenting and …

Identifying And Addressing Unintended Values When Designing (With) Artificial Intelligence, Niya Stoimenova, Maaike Kleinsmann Aug 2020

Identifying And Addressing Unintended Values When Designing (With) Artificial Intelligence, Niya Stoimenova, Maaike Kleinsmann

DRS Biennial Conference Series

A fundamental shift in the way society operates is approaching due to the prevalent adoption of self-learning technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI). Defined by the well-pronounced incongruence between their initial purpose and the values delivered to their multifaceted users, AI-powered systems are already being deployed in crucial social institutions such as hospitals, banks and courtrooms. To solve this tension, we first identify design practices that are suitable for the context of AI. Then we introduce a framework of three logical inferences that could aid designers to deliberately and continuously identify and address unintended values AI-powered solutions produce. The paper is …

Whiteness In Design Practice: The Need To Prioritize Process Over Artefact., Meghan Kelly Aug 2020

Whiteness In Design Practice: The Need To Prioritize Process Over Artefact., Meghan Kelly

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This article will interrogate the issues associated with non-Indigenous designers working with Indigenous knowledges in commercial design practice. It will analyze the position of ‘whiteness’ to appreciate the ongoing impact of colonialism on Indigenous representation and identity creation. The article attests there are times when non-Indigenous input into design outcomes is not suitable. However, if non-Indigenous engagement in the design process offers benefit to Indigenous stakeholders, the International Indigenous Design Charter serves as a guiding document on the best practices to follow. There is still a concern that regardless of the extensive consultation, strong industry support and the best intentions …

Social Media Research And The Impact Of Graphic Design: A Case Study Examining An Indonesian Political Campaign., Fanny Marcellina Suhendra, Nicole Wragg, Carolyn Barnes Aug 2020

Social Media Research And The Impact Of Graphic Design: A Case Study Examining An Indonesian Political Campaign., Fanny Marcellina Suhendra, Nicole Wragg, Carolyn Barnes

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Outside imagery, graphic design is largely invisible to the research fields most interested in communication campaigns, seeing negligible research conducted from a design perspective. In an era of participatory culture, social media analytics offer new ways of quantifying audience engagement, but the blurring of the boundaries between producers, consumption and audiences through the phenomenon of ‘produsage’ offers richer, more contextualised insights into the impact of the designed aspects of campaigns. In examining Berakar Komunikasi’s campaign supporting the 2014 and 2019 election bids of Indonesia’s President Jokowi Widodo, our paper examines how qualitative social media research offers fine-grained insights into the …

A Pilot Study Used To Better Construct A Research Direction To Understand Where Industrial Design Fits Within The 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), Christoph Heinrich Walter Koch, Blair Kuys, Gianni Renda

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The industrial design profession is engaging with a new manufacturing revolution — Industry4.0 (I4.0). This new paradigm presents new opportunities and challenges for industrial designers. However, it is still unclear what knowledge industrial designers can contribute to manufacturers in an emerging I4.0 context. This pilot study serves to determine the current state of practice of industrial design, and to discover areas of improvement as well as strengths to build on. Most importantly, this study functions as the first step to better qualify questions for a subsequent online questionnaire survey, in conjunction with findings from literature. A focus group was conducted …

Visual Representations Of Taiwanese Endemic Bird Species On Digital Media, Chia-Yin Yu Aug 2020

Visual Representations Of Taiwanese Endemic Bird Species On Digital Media, Chia-Yin Yu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This study investigated the aptness of digital-media visual representations of Taiwanese endemic bird species. First, expert interviews were conducted to obtain crucial graphic design-related bird features. Second, we applied graphic rendering and overall-conformation extraction to three stylizations—2D design and color block, 2D design and gradation, and stereoscopic effect and gradation. Degrees of similarity were tested, involving 239 participants aged 20–45. The results showed that (1) the crucial features in bird-related graphic design are body-part color, overall tone, the conformation of individual body parts, overall contour and style, and wing color. (2) Graphic designs based on the 2D design and color …

Putting The Trans* Into Design For Transition: Reflections On Gender, Technology And Natureculture, Sarah Elsie Baker Aug 2020

Putting The Trans* Into Design For Transition: Reflections On Gender, Technology And Natureculture, Sarah Elsie Baker

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the last five years, design for transition has emerged as a prominent critical paradigm in designing for sustainable futures. Transition design approaches are united in their aim of reorienting design practices to address global environmental catastrophe and societal inequality. Nevertheless, the discussion of gender and sexuality is notable for its absence. One exception is Arturo Escobar’s (2018) Designs for the Pluriverse. In this paper, I take Escobar’s discussion of gender as my starting point. I suggest that by utilising the concept of “Mother Earth” Escobar risks essentializing gender and biology and limiting the transformative potential of technology. I argue …

Studying Material Interactions To Facilitate A Sense Of Being With The World, Bilge Merve Aktas, Camilla Groth

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Material interactions are fundamental to design and craft education; however, they might also provide opportunities to reflect on sustainable behaviour in general. In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary undergraduate course in which students interacted with clay and wool. By engaging novices in material-based craft processes, we examined renewed ways of experiencing the materials to reconsider our everyday material interactions and our dependency and responsibilities in regard to materials in general. Through this example, we discuss the potential of craft practice as an educational platform to discuss materiality and to facilitate a deeper and more holistic understanding of the consequences …

Design Meets Death: Emergent Issues In A Research Study On Reimagining ‘Legacy’ In The Context Of Paediatric Palliative Care, Farnaz Nickpour, Lynda Brook, Ming Lim, Scott Gaule Aug 2020

Design Meets Death: Emergent Issues In A Research Study On Reimagining ‘Legacy’ In The Context Of Paediatric Palliative Care, Farnaz Nickpour, Lynda Brook, Ming Lim, Scott Gaule

DRS Biennial Conference Series

‘Legacy’ is a death-centred adult-oriented concept, conventionally defined and narrowly imagined. Legacy making activities in palliative care are proven to enhance sense-making and offer therapeutic benefits. However, research around legacy and legacy making is limited in definition, outcome, and ambition. This paper reports on an exploratory, interdisciplinary, design-led study aiming to reimagine ‘legacy’, in the sensitive and heavily under-studied context of paediatric palliative care. An inclusive design approach is adopted and children and young people are focused upon as the ‘lead design partners’ with potentially distinct and largely overlooked voices and viewpoints in palliative care. Both chronological and thematic perspectives …

Navigating Contemporary Complexities In The Design Of Sexuality Education Materials, Louise Moana Kolff Aug 2020

Navigating Contemporary Complexities In The Design Of Sexuality Education Materials, Louise Moana Kolff

DRS Biennial Conference Series

More than ever quality comprehensive sexuality education is needed to help children make sense of increasingly complex and fluid notions of sexuality, gender and relationships. Designers of sexuality education are faced with the task of navigating issues such as earlier onset of puberty, changes to normative family structures, changing ways of conceiving and birthing, and the impact of technology and social media. This paper explores how some of these complexities influence the design of sexuality education by analysing the design of three books aimed at younger children, and through interviews with the Australian, Canadian and Danish creators of the books.

Graphic Design Studies: What Can It Be? Following In Victor Margolin’S Footsteps For Possible Answers, Robert George Harland Aug 2020

Graphic Design Studies: What Can It Be? Following In Victor Margolin’S Footsteps For Possible Answers, Robert George Harland

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Graphic design studies is proposed as a new way to differentiate practice in graphic design from reflection on that practice. Previous attempts to link design studies and graphic design have fallen short of arguing for graphic design studies, and consequently has not been explicit about how graphic design studies may contribute to better understanding the nature of graphic design practice. This has not been helped by the abstruse nomenclature that confuses graphic design’s relationship to and distinction from other visual practices. Victor Margolin called this ‘narrative problems.’ This paper explores the potential to differentiate graphic design practice from graphic design …

A Framework For Designing For Divergent Values, Marina Bos-De Vos Aug 2020

A Framework For Designing For Divergent Values, Marina Bos-De Vos

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designers increasingly collaborate with other actors to deliver designs that address diverse stakeholder needs. Such multidisciplinary design processes revolve around integrating various, often divergent values, including the ideals that collaborating actors have, and the different kinds of worth that they attempt to realize. As values are multidimensional and continuously in flux, the process of designing for divergent values requires conscious action. Existing theories of values and methods for integrating diverse, possibly competing values are still scattered across disciplines, leaving designers with little overview and handles for what they have to deal with. Synthesizing insights from workshops with architects and literature …

Multispecies Cohabitation And Future Design, Stanislav Roudavski Aug 2020

Multispecies Cohabitation And Future Design, Stanislav Roudavski

DRS Biennial Conference Series

How should humans live with animals and other forms of life? Could responses to this question improve the health and wellbeing of the biosphere? This paper argues that design researchers ought to engage nonhuman lifeforms as collaborators: informants and co-designers, or clients and users. Inspired by recent design challenges involving birds, bats and trees, this paper positions emancipatory multispecies cohabitation as a goal that can alleviate ongoing biodiversity losses and human-wildlife conflicts, in cities and beyond. It opens an interdisciplinary conversation by translating emerging scholarship in ethics, politics, and aesthetics to a narrative about desirable more-than-human cultures. This discussion has …

Novice To Expert Real-Time Knowledge Transition In The Context Of X-Ray Airport Security, Shahab Hoghooghi, Vesna Popovic, Levi Swann

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The X-ray screening task is one of the most critical parts of the security processes at airports. Improving this task is directly related to the knowledge of the screeners who perform the task. This paper describes an investigation on real-time knowledge transition during security screeners’ performance of the x-ray screening task at airports. Using eye-tracking glasses, behaviours of ten novice and expert x-ray screeners were observed during the regular screening tasks. Results show that there is a direct relationship between expertise and the amount of knowledge gained by and transferred to security employees. Experts demonstrated a superior ability to transfer …

Attuning Contraception Choice And Patient Values, Michael Arnold Mages, Janice Lin, Anni Xu Aug 2020

Attuning Contraception Choice And Patient Values, Michael Arnold Mages, Janice Lin, Anni Xu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In designed medical decision aids, supporting contraception decision-making is typically approached as supporting choice-making via the examination of features and benefits of the various contraceptive methods. In this paper, we examine the relevant goals of the immediate actors: personal goals of the patient and physician as well as the goals of the public health system. We argue that rather than supporting a single choice, that designing for contraception decision-making is best re-framed as supporting iterative attunement between the patient’s values, body and a contraceptive regimen.

Conformationally Altered C-Reactive Protein Capable Of Binding To Atherogenic Lipoproteins Reduces Atherosclerosis, Asmita Pathak, Sanjay K. Singh, Douglas P. Thewke, Alok Agrawal

ETSU Faculty Works

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that C-reactive protein (CRP) protects against the development of atherosclerosis and that a conformational alteration of wild-type CRP is necessary for CRP to do so. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory cardiovascular disease and CRP is a plasma protein produced by the liver in inflammatory states. The co-localization of CRP and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) at atherosclerotic lesions suggests a possible role of CRP in atherosclerosis. CRP binds to phosphocholine-containing molecules but does not interact with LDL unless the phosphocholine groups in LDL are exposed. However, CRP can bind to LDL, without the …

Protocol For A National Probability Survey Using Home Specimen Collection Methods To Assess Prevalence And Incidence Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection And Antibody Response, Aaron J. Siegler, Patrick S. Sullivan, Travis Sanchez, Ben Lopman, Mansour Fahimi, Charles Sailey, Martin Frankel, Richard Rothenberg, Colleen F. Kelley, Heather Bradley

Publications and Research

Purpose: The U.S. response to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has been hampered by early and ongoing delays in testing for infection; without data on where infections were occurring and the magnitude of the epidemic, early public health responses were not data-driven. Understanding the prevalence of SARSCoV- 2 infections and immune response is critical to developing and implementing effective public health responses. Most serological surveys have been limited to localities that opted to conduct them and/or were based on convenience samples. Moreover, results of antibody testing might be subject to high false positive rates in the setting of low prevalence of immune …

Mining Conflict, Indigenous Peoples And Environmental Justice: The Case Of Phulbari Coal Project In Bangladesh, Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan Aug 2020

Mining Conflict, Indigenous Peoples And Environmental Justice: The Case Of Phulbari Coal Project In Bangladesh, Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan

PhD Dissertations

My doctoral dissertation, an in-depth case study of the Phulbari Coal Project in Bangladesh, accentuates the interests and engagements of Indigenous peoples (Adibasi people) in the decisionmaking process in resource extractive industries through an environmental justice framework. My primary aim is to observe how and to what extent Indigenous peoples’ interests are reflected in official environmental decision-making processes versus how they frame their own claims in a mining conflict situation. I employ extensive qualitative research in the project area to demonstrate how Adibasi communities articulate and implement their claims through raising their voices and ultimately stimulating a movement that stopped …

The Generation Of An Engineered Interleukin-10 Protein With Improved Stability And Biological Function, Faisal Minshawi, Sebastian Lanvermann, Edward Mckenzie, Rebecca Jeffery, Kevin Couper, Stamatia Papoutsopoulou, Axel Roers, Werner Muller Aug 2020

The Generation Of An Engineered Interleukin-10 Protein With Improved Stability And Biological Function, Faisal Minshawi, Sebastian Lanvermann, Edward Mckenzie, Rebecca Jeffery, Kevin Couper, Stamatia Papoutsopoulou, Axel Roers, Werner Muller

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an immunoregulatory cytokine that plays a pivotal role in modulating inflammation. IL-10 has inhibitory effects on proinflammatory cytokine production and function in vitro and in vivo; as such, IL-10 is viewed as a potential treatment for various inflammatory diseases. However, a significant drawback of using IL-10 in clinical application is the fact that the biologically active form of IL-10 is an unstable homodimer, which has a short half-life and is easily degraded in vivo. Consequently, IL-10 therapy using recombinant native IL-10 has had only limited success in the treatment of human disease. To improve the therapeutic potential …

Alcohol And Smoking Mediated Modulations In Adaptive Immunity In Pancreatitis, Rakesh Bhatia, Christopher Thompson, Koelina Ganguly, Shailender K. Singh, Surinder K. Batra, Sushil Kumar Aug 2020

Alcohol And Smoking Mediated Modulations In Adaptive Immunity In Pancreatitis, Rakesh Bhatia, Christopher Thompson, Koelina Ganguly, Shailender K. Singh, Surinder K. Batra, Sushil Kumar

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Pancreatitis is a condition of pancreatic inflammation driven by injury to the pancreatic parenchyma. The extent of acinar insult, intensity, and type of immune response determines the severity of the disease. Smoking, alcohol and autoimmune pancreatitis are some of the predominant risk factors that increase the risk of pancreatitis by differentially influencing the adaptive immune system. The overall decrease in peripheral lymphocyte (T-, B- and (natural killer T-) NKT-cell) count and increased infiltration into the damaged pancreatic tissue highlight the contribution of adaptive immunity in the disease pathology. Smoking and alcohol modulate the responsiveness and apoptosis of T- and B-cells …

Yellow rust (YR) wheat disease is one of the major threats to worldwide wheat production, and it often spreads rapidly to new and unexpected geographic locations. To cope with this threat, integrated pathogen management strategies combine disease-resistant plants, sensors monitoring technologies, and fungicides either preventively or curatively, which come with their associated monetary and environmental costs. This work presents a methodology for timely detection of YR that cuts down on hardware and computational requirements. It enables frequent detailed monitoring of the spread of YR, hence providing the opportunity to better target mitigation efforts which is critical for successful integrated disease …

Interactive Video Vignettes (Ivvs) To Help Students Learn Genetics Concepts, Dina L. Newman, Jean Cardinale, L Kate Wright

Articles

any video resources exist to teach Mendelian genetics, but most consist of passive delivery of information rather than active construction of knowledge by users. We have created two interactive video vignettes (IVVs) that can be used together or separately to introduce students to core concepts of genetics, using principles of active learning (e.g., elicit-confront-resolve, directed feedback, reflection). These online resources are free and can be assigned as homework for students to complete outside of class. Each IVV features a realistic scenario of undergraduate students investigating genetic phenomena by collecting and analyzing data. During the IVVs, the user is integrated into …
