BACKGROUND: Poorly healing wounds are one of the major complications in patients suffering from recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB). At present, there are no effective means to analyze changes in cellular and molecular networks occurring during RDEB wound progression to predict wound outcome and design betted wound management approaches.

OBJECTIVES: To better define mechanisms influencing RDEB wound progression by evaluating changes in molecular and cellular networks.

METHODS: We developed a non-invasive approach for sampling and analysis of wound-associated constituents using wound-covering bandages. Cellular and molecular components from seventy-six samples collected from early, established and chronic RDEB wounds were evaluated by …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Content is the form through which the information is conveyed as per the requirement of user. A volume of content is huge and expected to grow exponentially hence classification of useful data and not useful data is a very tedious task. Interface between content and user is Search engine. Therefore, the contents are designed considering search engine's perspective. Content designed by the organization, utilizes user’s data for promoting their products and services. This is done mostly using inorganic ways utilized to influence the quality measures of a content, this may mislead the information. There is no correct mechanism available to …

Determination Of The Δ 2 H Values Of High Molecular Weight Lipids By High Temperature Gc Coupled To Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, Sk Lengger, Y Weber, Kwr Taylor, Sh Kopf, Et Al Oct 2020

Determination Of The Δ 2 H Values Of High Molecular Weight Lipids By High Temperature Gc Coupled To Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, Sk Lengger, Y Weber, Kwr Taylor, Sh Kopf, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Rationale The hydrogen isotopic composition of lipids (d2Hlipid) is widely used in food science and as a proxy for past hydrological conditions. Determining the d2H values of large, well-preserved triacylglycerides and other microbial lipids, such as glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) lipids, is thus of widespread interest but has so far not been possible due to their low volatility which prohibits analysis by traditional gas chromatography/pyrolysis/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/P/IRMS). Methods We determined the d2H values of large, polar molecules and applied high-temperature gas chromatography (HTGC) methods on a modified GC/P/IRMS system. The system used a high-temperature 7-m GC column, …

The Unfolded Protein Response pathway is a conserved signaling mechanism having important roles in cellular physiology and is perturbed accompanying disease. We previously identified the novel UPR target gene CHAC1, a direct target of ATF4, downstream of PERK-EIF2A and activated by the UPR pathway. CHAC1 enzyme directs catalysis of γ-linked glutamate bonds within specific molecular targets. CHAC1 is the first enzyme characterized that can catalyze intracellular glutathione degradation in eukaryotes, having implications for regulation of oxidative stress. DDIT3 (CHOP) is a terminal UPR transcription factor, regulated by ATF4 and an output promoting cell death signaling. Herein we examine the relationship …

Affirmative Action And Mismatch: Evidence From Statewide Affirmative Action Bans, Leon Ren Oct 2020

Affirmative Action And Mismatch: Evidence From Statewide Affirmative Action Bans, Leon Ren

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper empirically evaluates the mismatch hypothesis by exploiting the quasi-experimental variation in the adoption of statewide affirmative action bans. Specifically, this paper examines the effect of such bans on minority graduation rates using a difference-in-difference, synthetic control, and triple-difference approach. My results suggest that statewide affirmative action bans are associated with an increase in minority graduation rates, consistent with the mismatch hypothesis, at highly selective institutions. Moreover, mismatch effects are not confined to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors. JEL Codes: I28, J15

A Detailed Assessment Of Groundwater Quality In The Kabul Basin, Afghanistan, And Suitability For Future Development, Hussain Ali Jawadi, Jay Sagin, Daniel D. Snow

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Kabul is one of the most populated cities in Afghanistan and providing resources to support this population in an arid climate presents a serious environmental challenge. The current study evaluated the quality of local Kabul Basin groundwater to determine its suitability water for drinking and irrigation purposes now and into the future. This aim was aided through groundwater parameter assessment as well as determination ofWater Quality Index (WQI) developed from 15 observation points near the city. The results of our physicochemical analysis illustrate that groundwater in the majority of areas of the Kabul Basin is not generally suitable for human …

Protein Conformational Entropy Is Not Slaved To Water, Bryan S Marques, Matthew A Stetz, Christine Jorge, Kathleen G Valentine, A Joshua Wand, Nathaniel V Nucci

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Conformational entropy can be an important element of the thermodynamics of protein functions such as the binding of ligands. The observed role for conformational entropy in modulating molecular recognition by proteins is in opposition to an often-invoked theory for the interaction of protein molecules with solvent water. The "solvent slaving" model predicts that protein motion is strongly coupled to various aspects of water such as bulk solvent viscosity and local hydration shell dynamics. Changes in conformational entropy are manifested in alterations of fast internal side chain motion that is detectable by NMR relaxation. We show here that the fast-internal side …

By Shattering The Vulture’S Nose, Melissa Yang Oct 2020

By Shattering The Vulture’S Nose, Melissa Yang

The Goose

This project explores an unusual ornithological debate between 19th-century naturalists John James Audubon and Charles Waterton on the olfaction of vultures. Both naturalists involved were also artists—certainly more than they were scientists—and prone to artifice and performative amplification. This article examines the rhetorical dynamics of this niche but sensational debate on avian olfaction, and its problematic influence on scientific progress.

Cross-Shelf Transport Through The Interaction Among A Coastal Jet, A Topographic Wave, And Tides, Helga Huntley, Charles W. Mcmahon, Joseph J. Kuehl, A. D. Kirwan Jr. Oct 2020

Cross-Shelf Transport Through The Interaction Among A Coastal Jet, A Topographic Wave, And Tides, Helga Huntley, Charles W. Mcmahon, Joseph J. Kuehl, A. D. Kirwan Jr.

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Shelf break flows are often characterized by along-isobath jets with cross-shelf currents associated with tides and waves guided by variable topography. Here, we address the question: Can a superposition of such flows produce significant aperiodic cross-shelf transport? To answer this question, we use a barotropic analytic model for the jet based on a similarity solution of the shallow water equations over variable topography, a wave disturbance determined by the topography, and a diurnal tidal disturbance. We use standard Lagrangian methods to assess the cross-shelf transport, presenting the results, however, in a Eulerian frame, so as to be amenable to oceanographic …

Emergence Of Organisms., Andrea Roli, Stuart A Kauffman

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Since early cybernetics studies by Wiener, Pask, and Ashby, the properties of living systems are subject to deep investigations. The goals of this endeavour are both understanding and building: abstract models and general principles are sought for describing organisms, their dynamics and their ability to produce adaptive behavior. This research has achieved prominent results in fields such as artificial intelligence and artificial life. For example, today we have robots capable of exploring hostile environments with high level of self-sufficiency, planning capabilities and able to learn. Nevertheless, the discrepancy between the emergence and evolution of life and artificial systems is still …

Dialib-Qc An Assessment Tool For Spectral Libraries In Data-Independent Acquisition Proteomics., Mukul K Midha, David S Campbell, Charu Kapil, Ulrike Kusebauch, Michael R Hoopmann, Samuel L Bader, Robert L Moritz

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Data-independent acquisition (DIA) mass spectrometry, also known as Sequential Window Acquisition of all Theoretical Mass Spectra (SWATH), is a popular label-free proteomics strategy to comprehensively quantify peptides/proteins utilizing mass spectral libraries to decipher inherently multiplexed spectra collected linearly across a mass range. Although there are many spectral libraries produced worldwide, the quality control of these libraries is lacking. We present the DIALib-QC (DIA library quality control) software tool for the systematic evaluation of a library's characteristics, completeness and correctness across 62 parameters of compliance, and further provide the option to improve its quality. We demonstrate its utility in assessing and …
