Curie Temperature Engineering In A Novel 2d Analog Of Iron Ore (Hematene) Via Strain, Renu Singla, Timothy A. Hackett, Sarvesh Kumar, Jyotsna Sharma, Manish K. Kashyap Oct 2020

Curie Temperature Engineering In A Novel 2d Analog Of Iron Ore (Hematene) Via Strain, Renu Singla, Timothy A. Hackett, Sarvesh Kumar, Jyotsna Sharma, Manish K. Kashyap

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

As a newly exfoliated magnetic 2D material from hematite, hematene is the most far-reaching ultrathin magnetic indirect bandgap semiconductor. We have carried out a detailed structural analysis of hematene via prefacing strain by means of first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Hematene in the pristine form emerges out to be a magnetic semiconductor with a bandgap of 1.0/2.0 eV for the majority/minority spin channel. The dependence of magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE), TC, and the bandgap on compressive and tensile strains has been scanned exclusively. It is examined that TC depends firmly on the compressive strain …

Articles

We have previously demonstrated hippocampal hyperglutamatergic signaling occurs prior to plaque accumulation in AβPP/PS1 mice. Here, we evaluate 2-Amino-6-(trifluoromethoxy) benzothiazole (riluzole) as an early intervention strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD), aimed at restoring glutamate neurotransmission prior to substantial Beta amyloid (Aβ) plaque accumulation and cognitive decline. Male AβPP/PS1 mice, a model of progressive cerebral amyloidosis, were treated with riluzole from 2-6 months of age. Morris water maze, in vivo electrochemistry, and immunofluorescence were performed to assess cognition, glutamatergic neurotransmission, and pathology, respectively, at 12 months. Four months of prodromal riluzole treatment in AβPP/PS1 mice resulted in long-lasting procognitive effects and …

Energy Balance In The Dssat-Csm-Cropgro Model, Santiago V. Cuadra, Bruce A. Kimball, Kenneth J. Boote, Andrew E. Suyker, Nigel Pickering Oct 2020

Energy Balance In The Dssat-Csm-Cropgro Model, Santiago V. Cuadra, Bruce A. Kimball, Kenneth J. Boote, Andrew E. Suyker, Nigel Pickering

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

One potential way to improve crop growth models is for the models to predict energy balance and evapotranspiration (ET) from first principles, thus serving as a check on “engineered” ET methodology. In this paper, we present new implementations and the results of an energy balance model (EBL) developed by Jagtap and Jones (1989) and then implemented in DSSAT’s CROPGRO (CG-EBL) model by Pickering et al. (1995) as a linked energy balance-photosynthesis model that has not been field-tested until now. The energy balance code computes evapotranspiration and other energy balance components, as well as a canopy air temperature, based on three …

Inheritability Of Ciprofloxacin-Induced Mitochondrial Mutations From Parental To Offspring Generation Using Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, Rose Mccoy Oct 2020

Inheritability Of Ciprofloxacin-Induced Mitochondrial Mutations From Parental To Offspring Generation Using Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, Rose Mccoy

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

In all eukaryotes, mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell (Siekevitz, 1957). In plants, however, their mitochondrial genome is especially strange. Plant mitochondrial genomes are extremely large and contain both linear and circular subgenomic DNA fragments. Plant mitochondrial genomes undergo a significant amount of mutations in the form of rearrangements. However, it is not known how often these rearrangements are inherited by the next generation. It is thought that plant cells that are still dividing have higher rates of DNA repair, such as double-strand break repair, to ensure the quality of that plant lineage. As follows, it is …

Anthropogenic Change On The Distribution Of Marine Megafauna And Their Prey, Baylie Fadool Oct 2020

Anthropogenic Change On The Distribution Of Marine Megafauna And Their Prey, Baylie Fadool

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Anthropogenic change is impacting the distribution and survival of marine megafauna and their prey. Humans are changing every aspect of the marine environment, with effects reaching as large as changing the composition of marine environments to directly overexploiting species through the fishing industry. The role that marine megafauna play in balancing ecosystems, including as top apex predators, leads to detrimental results in the absences and population declines of these species. Migrations and declines due to threats on marine apex predator species will alter their environments by causing mesopredator release and changes in community structure, which is often associated with reduced …

Frequency Based Capacitive Biosensor, Yehia El-Sehrawy

Theses and Dissertations

Unlike traditional medical equipment that tend to be bulky and expensive, biosensors are portable, versatile, and inexpensive for mass production. Biosensors allow for early detection of disease due to their wide reach which increases the patients’ chances of recovery. The literature presents several biosensor techniques based on DNA hybridization, contact imagers, and capacitance transduction. This thesis presents a ring oscillator based biosensor that uses capacitance to frequency transduction for the detection of viral and cancer diseases. The design features a differential measurement to eliminate the effect of parasitic capacitances on the measurement. In order to mitigate the typical errors of …

In Vitro Study Of Biodegradation Of Glass And Glass Crystals Of The R2o-Ro-Caf2-P2o5-Al2o3-Sio2 System, Aripova Mastura, Mkrtchyan Ripsime

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

For bioactive glasses and glass crystals, biodegradation is the most important parameter. The biodegradation process was studied for glasses and glass crystals synthesized in the R2O-RO-CaF2-P2O5-Al2O3-SiO2 system. Degradation analysis of samples was carried out on a Hitachi 902 biochemical analyzer in 0.9% NaCl, 3.8% sodium citrate solution and human serum. . The kinetics of leaching in various environments, the influence of the components of glasses and glass crystals on their biodegradation have been determined. The composition of glass that is most susceptible to degradation has been determined. IR spectroscopic analysis of glasses and crystallized glasses in vitro showed that all …

Feeding Specificity Of The Photosynthetic Sacoglossan Sea Slug Elysia Papillosa, Kourtney Sui Barber Oct 2020

Feeding Specificity Of The Photosynthetic Sacoglossan Sea Slug Elysia Papillosa, Kourtney Sui Barber

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The sacoglossan sea slug, Elysia papillosa is associated with two species of the siphonaceous green alga, Penicillus, which co-occur in mixed macrophyte beds at Tarpon Springs, FL, USA. Field collections revealed that Elysia papillosa is frequently collected from the alga, P. capitatus, but is also present in much lower abundance on P. lamourouxii. Past studies have shown that some species of sacoglossans consume algal species that differ from the algae from which they are collected so, in order to determine whether E. papillosa was consuming either or both species of Penicillus, total DNA was extracted from individual slugs collected from …

Two Journeys Of The Spirit: Comparing Plato's Republic And Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Zeina Abdallah Jehama Oct 2020

Two Journeys Of The Spirit: Comparing Plato's Republic And Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Zeina Abdallah Jehama

Theses and Dissertations

Both Plato’s Republic and Ibn Tufayl’s Hayy Ibn Yaqzan explain to the reader how a spiritual journey can bring about an understanding of the Divine. However, both works also show us that the spiritual journey depends on an inquiry into the nature of the human soul as it engages in the process of learning. In the first chapter of the thesis, Plato’s Republic is explored, particularly in terms of the Allegory of the Cave, which suggests how the notion the Divine goes beyond everyday life experience. In the second chapter, Hayy Ibn Yaqzan is presented as a spiritual narrative that …

The Effect Of Twitter In Academic Achievement And Students’ Motivation Toward Mathematics, Sami M. Alshehri Oct 2020

The Effect Of Twitter In Academic Achievement And Students’ Motivation Toward Mathematics, Sami M. Alshehri

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effectiveness of Twitter when used in conjunction with a non-traditional type of educational approach referred to as the “flipped classroom method” upon the academic achievement of 12th grade students and their learning motivation towards mathematics. The study used a quantitative approach, and the sample consisted of 48 students. The study was conducted during a three-week period in two public high schools in Abha, Saudi Arabia. The first hypothesis was that the use of Twitter would improve academic performance in mathematics. The second hypothesis was that learning in a flipped classroom …

Covid-19: Effective Policymaking Depends On Trust In Experts, Politicians, And The Public, Paul Cairney, Adam Wellstead Oct 2020

Covid-19: Effective Policymaking Depends On Trust In Experts, Politicians, And The Public, Paul Cairney, Adam Wellstead

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

In a crisis, almost-instant choices about who to trust or distrust could make a difference between life and death. Trust is necessary for cooperation, coordination, social order, and to reduce the need for coercive state imposition. During a pandemic, people need to trust experts to help them understand and respond to the problem, governments to coordinate policy instruments and make choices about levels of coercion, and citizens as they cooperate to minimize infection. We compare these general requirements with specific developments in the UK and US, identifying: the variable reliance by elected politicians on scientific experts, worrying levels of distrust …

Identification Of Planktothrix (Cyanobacteria) Blooms And Effects On The Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Community In The Non-Tidal Potomac River, Usa, Joshua Henesy, Jennifer L. Wolny, John E. Mullican, Detbra S. Rosales, Joseph S. Pitula, Joseph W. Love

Virginia Journal of Science

Using transverse cross-sectional transects, a survey of 31 km of the non-tidal Potomac River was conducted from White’s Ferry, Virginia to Brunswick, Maryland, USA, between June and September in 2013 through 2015 to assess a recurring benthic cyanobacteria bloom. Abundant benthic cyanobacteria blooms were detected during the 2014 and 2015 sampling seasons and the primary taxon was identified morphologically and molecularly as Planktothrix cf. isothrix. When present, P. cf. isothrix blooms were concentrated from river center to the Maryland shoreline. This pattern was correlated with significantly greater benthic chlorophyll-a and phycocyanin concentrations. In an apparent response to …

Coal Geology & Exploration

In order to deeply analyze the indication of oil shale development characteristics on paleoenvironments and provide theoretical guidance for oil shale resource evaluation, the organic geochemistry and elemental geochemistry characteristics of the Neogene Zhangcun Formation oil shale in the central part of the Qinshui basin were analyzed by Rock-Eval and TOC and the paleoclimate and paleogeographic environments of the depositional period were discussed as well. The results show that the oil shale of Zhangcun Formation has the low oil content which Tar=4.15%, higher hydrocarbon potential, kerogen is of sapropel type(I1), which has relatively shallow burial depth. The element …

Effect Of Electromagnetic Waves Of Mobile Phone On Human Brain, Faiz Ihsane, El Kadmiri Nadia Oct 2020

Effect Of Electromagnetic Waves Of Mobile Phone On Human Brain, Faiz Ihsane, El Kadmiri Nadia

Health Sciences

Mobile phones (MP) have become one of the most used devices for communication. Historically, enough proof has ruled out the substantial short-term effect of radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) emitted by MP on the human brain and its cognitive performance. The aim of this mini-review is to examine the different effects of electromagnetic waves emitted by MP on the human brain. We base our arguments on analyzing recent neuroimaging and electroencephalography studies that will elaborate on the effects of the human brain's exposure to the EMF’MP. Several studies indicated an increase in cortical excitability and/or efficiency related to EMF exposure, while …
