Comparison Of Native And Non-Native Predator Consumption Rates And Prey Avoidance Behavior In North America And Europe, Ayse Gül Ünlü, John J. Obrycki, Roman Bucher

Entomology Faculty Publications

Novel predator–prey interactions can contribute to the invasion success of non-native predators. For example, native prey can fail to recognize and avoid non-native predators due to a lack of co-evolutionary history and cue dissimilarity with native predators. This might result in a competitive advantage for non-native predators. Numerous lady beetle species were globally redistributed as biological control agents against aphids, resulting in novel predator–prey interactions. Here, we investigated the strength of avoidance behavior of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) toward chemical cues of native lady beetles and non-native Asian Harmonia axyridis and European Coccinella septempunctata and Hippodamia variegata …

Plasmon-Induced Color And Photochemistry, Paul J. Gieri Oct 2020

Plasmon-Induced Color And Photochemistry, Paul J. Gieri

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

In recent decades, metallic nanostructures have been extensively studied for a variety of applications due to the ability to support surface plasmons. These excitations, which consist of collective resonant oscillations of the conduction electrons, couple strongly to visible light, confining it into subwavelength volumes. In the first part of this work, we study the optical response of metallic nanostructures supported by metallic substrates. We demonstrate that these systems support a charge transfer plasmon mode, whose frequency is primarily determined by the geometry of the contact area between the nanoparticle and the substrate. In the following part, we exploit this knowledge …

Risk stratification for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) uses molecular and cytogenetic abnormalities identified at diagnosis. Response to therapy informs risk, and morphology continues to be used more frequently than flow cytometry. Herein, the largest cohort of pediatric patients prospectively assessed for measurable residual disease (MRD) by flow cytometry (N = 784) is reported. The "difference from normal" (ΔN) technique was applied: 31% of all patients tested positive (AML range, 0.02% to 91%) after the first course of treatment on Children's Oncology Group study AAML0531. Detection of MRD following initial chemotherapy proved the strongest predicator of overall survival (OS) in univariable …

Inpatient Hospital Performance Is Associated With Post-Discharge Sepsis Mortality., Nicholas M. Mohr, Alexis M. Zebrowski, David F. Gaieski, David G. Buckler, Brendan G. Carr

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Post-discharge deaths are common in patients hospitalized for sepsis, but the drivers of post-discharge deaths are unclear. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that hospitals with high risk-adjusted inpatient sepsis mortality also have high post-discharge mortality, readmissions, and discharge to nursing homes.

METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of age-qualifying Medicare beneficiaries with sepsis hospitalization between January 2013 and December 2014. Hospital survivors were followed for 180-days post-discharge, and mortality, readmissions, and new admission to skilled nursing facility were measured. Inpatient hospital-specific sepsis risk-adjusted mortality ratio (observed: expected) was the primary exposure.

RESULTS: A total of 830,721 …

Optimal Strategies For Grassland Restoration To Increase Spatial Carrying Capacity Of Florida Sandhill Cranes In Pasco County, Florida, Ibrahim Kaya Oct 2020

Optimal Strategies For Grassland Restoration To Increase Spatial Carrying Capacity Of Florida Sandhill Cranes In Pasco County, Florida, Ibrahim Kaya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Florida sandhill crane (Antigone canadensis pratensis) is a non-migratory bird species occurring throughout the Florida peninsula and the Okefenokee Swamp in southeastern Georgia. Human land-altering activities have led to a substantial decline in the amount and condition of suitable habitat, including grasslands, for the species in Florida, thereby decreasing the population size significantly. Grasslands located in close proximity to nesting locations are one of the habitat types on which the population viability of the species depends, as they provide foraging and brooding habitat which is crucial for successful reproduction. The purpose of this study is to propose the most …

Regulation Of The Heat Shock Response And Hsf-1 Nuclear Stress Bodies In C. Elegans, Andrew Deonarine Oct 2020

Regulation Of The Heat Shock Response And Hsf-1 Nuclear Stress Bodies In C. Elegans, Andrew Deonarine

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Heat Shock Response (HSR) is a highly conserved stress responsive molecular pathway that functions to promote appropriate protein folding in the cell. The HSR accomplishes this primarily through the use of molecular chaperones that serve to bind to misfolded or unfolded proteins to assist in stabilizing and folding proteins back to their native functional state. The master regulator of this pathway is a transcription factor known as Heat Shock Factor 1 (HSF1). HSF1 regulates molecular chaperone expression in the cell’s basal state, but can also be stress induced by diverse biotic and abiotic signals including thermal shock, oxidative stress, …

Reproductive Ecology And Phenology Of Thalassia Testudinum (Hydrocharitaceae) In Tampa Bay, Florida, Sheila Scolaro

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Successful sexual reproduction and recolonization are critical in maintaining genetic diversity within seagrass meadows. Thalassia testudinum flower, fruit and seedling production were assessed visually at 10 sites within Tampa Bay, Florida approximately every 4 weeks from May to July 2017 to determine if there is spatial and temporal variation in sexual reproductive effort and if location within a meadow effects sexual reproductive effort. Results from this study reveal strong temporal variability throughout the reproductive season. The month of May was observed as peak Thalassia testudinum anthesis and June was peak fruiting in Tampa Bay during 2017. Flower and fruit density …

Saints, Sinners, And Scoundrels: Catholic Law Faculty And A Light Unseen: A History Of Catholic Legal Education In The United States, Teresa Stanton Collett

Journal of Catholic Legal Studies

(Excerpt)

As a faculty member at a Catholic law school for the past seventeen years, I have often been frustrated with the inability of many professors and administrators at Catholic law schools to describe what makes a law school “Catholic.” As Professors Breen and Strang report in A Light Unseen: A History of Catholic Legal Education in the United States, too often the description is limited to something like “a commitment to social justice,” or “inculcating a strong sense of professional ethics.” Yet as the authors observe, “Catholic law schools do not have a monopoly on or even a …

Teaching And Coaching Individuals: The Use Of Learning Styles In Forensics Coaching, Thomas Bartl Oct 2020

Teaching And Coaching Individuals: The Use Of Learning Styles In Forensics Coaching, Thomas Bartl

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

When I ask myself how to approach the issue of training coaches in competitive speech and debate, I find myself posing a different question. It seems that before I can ascertain what could or should be done to train coaches effectively or to train effective coaches I need to know what it is these coaches are expected to do. The answer to this question must then determine what kind of training would be appropriate.

The process by which the impact or quality of an article is assessed by counting the number of times other works mention it in their work can be defined as citation analysis. It involves counting the number of times an article is cited by other works to measure the impact of a publication or an author. The technique of citation analysis is effective and easier among all other technique of Bibliometrics to know the trend of research in a particular field, to know the preference of scholars for various forms of information resources. The present study is conducted in order …

Personalized Therapy Of Prostate Cancer, Tizar Fatima, El Kadmiri Nadia Oct 2020

Personalized Therapy Of Prostate Cancer, Tizar Fatima, El Kadmiri Nadia

Health Sciences

As prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death after lung cancer, several diagnostic strategies have been introduced in recent years. Among these prostate-specific antigens, it is widely recognized that this is the simplest and most common clinical endpoint - genetic instability is part of the oncogenic process. Gene mutations involved in DNA repair mechanisms may promote this genetic instability and participate in oncogenesis and metastatic progression. In prostate cancer, abnormalities in DNA repair are primarily due to somatic or constitutional mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes. Treatment options for prostate cancer are currently widely discussed in the media and …

Comparative Performance Of Chemical And Biological-Based Products In Management Of Algal Leaf Spot On Magnolia, Fulya Baysal-Gurel, Ravi Bika, Christina Jennings, Cristi Palmer, Terri Simmons

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Magnolia trees (Magnolia sp.) are a popular choice for consumers when choosing flowering woody plants for landscapes. Magnolia species grow in a wide variety of both temperate and tropical locations. Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is one of the more popular magnolias due to its pleasing aesthetics: large showy flowers in a range of colors and evergreen foliage. However, magnolias can be affected by algal leaf spot. Algal leaf spot is caused by Cephaleuros virescens, which is a widespread plant parasitic green alga. There has been little research on how to treat algal leaf spot on magnolia …

Management Of Non Metastatic Colo-Rectal Cancers During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Viewpoint, Fadila Kouhen, Meriem Chihabeddine, Mohammed Afif, Nadia Errafiy

Health Sciences

Recently, an ongoing outbreak of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus, known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread throughout Morocco and the rest of the world with more than 4.5 million confirmed cases and 300,000 deaths in 188 countries. As oncologists, it’s difficult to choose between delaying oncological treatment which increases the risk of progression and death from the disease, and increasing the risk of contamination by the Covid 19 Virus for patients who are very vulnerable. Colorectal cancer is a real public health problem, it represents the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in males and …
