In this paper, we present an enhanced sensitivity of temperature sensors based on thermo-coupled Multicore Fiber (MCF) structures. The sensors are all fabricated using a controlled arc power of a splicing device. Two different principles of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and Michelson interferometer (MI) have been observed experimentally. The MZI and MI structures exhibit temperature sensitivity as 136.67 pm/°C and 70.61 pm/°C, respectively, and found insensitive to the refractive index (RI). Also, its RI response can readily resolve the issues of cross-sensitivity.
Identifying Families Who May Be Struggling After Adoption Or Guardianship, Nancy Rolock
Identifying Families Who May Be Struggling After Adoption Or Guardianship, Nancy Rolock
Faculty Scholarship
Targeted prevention efforts after adoption or guardianship from foster care are intended to help families most at-risk and prior to the onset of significant issues. Most adoptive and guardianship families adjust well with supportive services in place; only a small proportion have difficulties that result in children returning to foster care after adoption or guardianship. This study examined the use of administrative data to identify families at-risk for post-permanency discontinuity. Administrative data have some utility for identifying families that may struggle, however, they provide a limited representation of risk. Caregiver survey responses in four states (n=1,670) found that families with …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are a destructive invasive species widespread throughout the United States that disrupt ecosystems, damage crops, and carry pathogens of concern for the health of domestic stock and humans including Brucella suis—the causative organism for swine brucellosis. In domestic swine, brucellosis results in reproductive failure due to abortions and infertility. Contact with infected feral swine poses spillover risks to domestic pigs as well as humans, companion animals, wildlife, and other livestock. Genetic factors influence the outcome of infectious diseases; therefore, genome wide association studies (GWAS) of differential immune responses among feral swine can provide …

Patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma have undergone two or three previous therapies are now being treated with a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody elotuzumab (HuLuc63) that targets F7 signalling lymphocytic activation molecule F7 (SLAMF7)- a signalling lymphocytic activation molecule. It is combined with dexamethasone and lenalidomide/pomalidomide for therapy. Adverse effects associated with elotuzumab consists of peripheral neuropathy, fever, constitutional symptoms (fatigue, headache, decreased appetite), and infections. A rare side effect of interstitial lung disease has only been observed in a single case. There are two case studies presented below of hypoxic respiratory failure upon this monoclonal antibody treatment both …

From Regulation Of Secondary Metabolites To Increased Virulence Under Sublethal Dosage Of Antibiotics: An Unprecedented Role Of Global Regulator, Mftr, In Burkholderia Thailandensis, Sudarshan Singh Thapa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The rise of multi-drug resistant bacteria combined with a decreasing pool of effective antibiotics has placed an increasing need for the development of novel antibiotics. Bacterial natural products or secondary metabolites have been the greatest source for development of novel antibiotics. The genus Burkholderia has recently emerged as a source of promising compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-cancer activities. Bacterial secondary metabolites provide added advantage to bacteria under stressful environments such as during host infection, evading predators or nutrient deficient conditions. However, genes involved in synthesis of these novel compounds remain silent under normal laboratory growth, creating a hurdle in …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(5): 1650-1666, 2020. Several studies suggest that acute bouts of exercise improve executive function in preadolescent children. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not completely understood. Specifically, no studies have examined the relationship between the stress hormone response to exercise and improvements in executive function in preadolescent children. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a bout of moderate intensity exercise versus rest on working memory (List Sorting Working Memory Task) and selective inhibition/attention (Eriksen flanker task) in preadolescent children, as well as to investigate whether changes in stress hormones …
Toward A Decolonial Ethics In Human Rights And Peace Education, Michalinos Zembylas
Toward A Decolonial Ethics In Human Rights And Peace Education, Michalinos Zembylas
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article argues that interventions in HRE and PE that aim to decolonize understandings and praxes of peace and human rights will inevitably have to address the issue of decolonial ethics. Decolonial ethics imagines a set of ethical orientations that confront conventional assumptions about culture and history and challenge the normally uninterrogated consequences of coloniality (which is an enduring process that is still very much with us today, as opposed to colonialism which is understood as a temporal period of oppression that has come and gone) and Eurocentrism in disciplinary discourses and practices. Although both HRE and PE have historically …

A Mini-Tn5-Derived Transposon With Reportable And Selectable Markers Enables Rapid Generation And Screening Of Insertional Mutants In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Eric S. Nazareno, Bimala Acharya, C. Korsi Dumenyo
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
We re-engineered a classic tool for mutagenesis and gene expression studies in Gram-negative bacteria. Our modified Tn5-based transposon contains multiple features that allow rapid selection for mutants, direct quantification of gene expression and straightforward cloning of the inactivated gene. The promoter-less gfp-km cassette provides selection and reporter assay depending on the activity of the promoter upstream of the transposon insertion site. The cat gene facilitates positive antibiotic selection for mutants, while the narrow R6Kγ replication origin forces transposition in recipient strains lacking the pir gene and enables cloning of the transposon flanked with the disrupted gene from the chromosome. The …
A New Species Of Diolcus Mayr (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae: Pachycorinae) With A Reexamination Of The Subfamily And Generic Placement Of Nesogenes Boscii (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae: Elvisurinae Or Pachycorinae), Joseph E. Eger Jr.

Detailed Genetic Analysis For Identifying Qtls Associated With Drought Tolerance At Seed Germination And Seedling Stages In Barley, Yasser S. Moursi, Samar G. Thabet, Ahmed Amro, Mona F.A. Dawood, P Stephen Baenziger, Ahmed Sallam
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Drought induces several challenges for plant development, growth, and production. These challenges become more severe, in particular, in arid and semiarid countries like Egypt. In terms of production, barley ranks fourth after wheat, maize, and rice. Seed germination and seedling stages are critical stages for plant establishment and growth. In the current study, 60 diverse barley genotypes were tested for drought tolerance using two different treatments: control (0-PEG) and drought (20%-PEG). Twenty-two traits were estimated for seed germination and seedling parameters. All traits were reduced under drought stress, and a significant variation was found among genotypes under control and stress …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Badgers can gather huge quantities of organic material to build their nests for winter time and to rear their cubs. Moreover, badger burrows (setts) are characterized by specific microclimate with quite stable temperature and humidity. Their fauna is poorly studied, especially in respect of saprobiontic Uropodina mites. In 2018–2019, we monitored 94 badger setts to search for nest material that had been thrown away during cleaning of the chambers after mating and winter sleep. In the collected material from 32 badger nests, we found 413 Uropodina mites of 16 species, in various stages of development (adults, protonymphs, and deutonymphs). The …

Competitive Intelligence For Insular Territories, Pierre Fournié, Henri Dou
Competitive Intelligence For Insular Territories, Pierre Fournié, Henri Dou
International Journal of Islands Research
For centuries, the intrinsic and ubiquitous parameters of insular territories have governed social, economic and political life within the island and with outer territories. Besides some biological and physical determinism, there exists a psychological factor that conducts islanders to feel that they possess a rich and a unique identity (Gombaud, 2007:593). Nowadays, islands are impacted by communication technologies and globalization, international law and politics. The opening to tourism, international trade and foreign capital, modifies the usual landmarks and often means that traditional activities and know-how are abandoned. Historically located at the periphery, islands suddenly appear at the centre of multiple …
Effect Of Triclosan-Tolerant Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria On Triclosan Degradation In Soils, Ashley Marie Garcia
Effect Of Triclosan-Tolerant Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria On Triclosan Degradation In Soils, Ashley Marie Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Triclosan (TCS), an antimicrobial found in commercial products, can also be found in freshwater systems used for crop irrigation. Thus, TCS may accumulate over time in soils, potentially affecting plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs). Bacterial isolates from a previous study which demonstrated PGPR activity and TCS tolerance (TPGPRs) were chosen to evaluate the use of triclosan as a sole carbon source on a minimal salts medium (MSMT). TPGPRs, which demonstrated TCS utilization, were chosen for inoculation into soil microcosm for triclosan degradation (TD-PGPRs). Soil microcosms were arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial randomized block design and irrigated with triclosan treatments …
