A Real Estate Valuation Model Using Boosted Feature Selection, Kankawee Chanasit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

To estimate real estate values, a complex valuation model based on artificial neural network (ANN) has been established as a successful means in modern machine learning research, specifically when high-dimensional data are available. Unfortunately, the real estate data in many locations, such as Thailand, are quite limited in terms of features. Hence, it becomes mandatory to reduce the complexity using feature selection techniques. These techniques aim to improve performance by identifying significant factors and help decrease the computational overload and model construction. However, due to the lack of explicability and interpretability in ANNs, the analysis of input factors cannot be …

Generation Of Neural Stem Cells (Nscs) From Human Fibroblasts Using Qq-Modified Sox2 And Neurod1 Proteins, Abdullah Ibrahim Alhomoudi Jan 2020

Generation Of Neural Stem Cells (Nscs) From Human Fibroblasts Using Qq-Modified Sox2 And Neurod1 Proteins, Abdullah Ibrahim Alhomoudi

Wayne State University Theses

The generation of induced neural stem cells (iNSCs) and induced neuronal cells (iNCs) from somatic cells provides new avenues for basic research and potential transplantation therapies for neurological diseases. However, clinical applications must consider the tumor formation capabilities of the implanted cells, the inability of iNCs to self-renew in culture, and reprogramming methods that use retroviral transduction which permanently alter genetic network of the cells. Here we report the generation of protein-induced neural stem cells (piNSCs) from human dermal fibroblasts using QQ-SON pluripotent reprogramming as a tool to quickly reset the time clock of the human somatic fibroblasts to a …

Evaluation Of Autoantibodies To Paraneoplastic Antigens As Early Detection Biomarkers For High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer, Laura Catherine Hurley Jan 2020

Evaluation Of Autoantibodies To Paraneoplastic Antigens As Early Detection Biomarkers For High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer, Laura Catherine Hurley

Wayne State University Dissertations

The majority of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage metastatic disease with poor prognosis due to non-specific symptoms and lack of early detection methods. This study evaluates autoantibodies against tumor antigens to identify candidate biomarkers for the early detection of ovarian tumors in high-risk women. Paraneoplastic antigens are associated with autoimmune diseases termed paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNSs), which develop when the unregulated immune response against a tumor also targets healthy cells. Notably, a set of antibodies is found in PNS patients with ovarian cancer, identifying highly immunogenic antigens in the tumor. In this dissertation work, we have …

Examining Links Between Culture, Identity, And Learning, Margaret Beale Spencer, Carly Offidani-Bertrand, Keshia Harris, Gabriel M. Velez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Learning as a cultural process is deeply rooted in our biology and in our evolutionary history. Prior generational intrusions and major events have implications for patterned interactions, processes, and outcomes for subsequent cohorts. Elder’s “Children of the Great Depression: Social Change in Life Experience” (1974) provides an illustration determined by a major socioeconomic fluctuation. Specifically, his description of the long-term impacts of the early 20th century economic depression on youth as observed across time are parallel to current 21st century observations of developmental expressions of cultural processes having under-acknowledged foundations (Davis, Burleigh, & Gardner, 1941; Davis & Havighurst, 1946; …

The measurement of bulk tissue nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon isotope values (δ13C) chronologically along biologically inert tissues sampled from offspring can provide a longitudinal record of their mothers' foraging habits. This study tested the important assumption that mother-offspring stable isotope values are positively and linearly correlated. In addition, any change in the mother-offspring bulk tissues and individual amino acids that occurred during gestation was investigated. Whiskers sampled from southern elephant seal pups (Mirounga leonina) and temporally overlapping whiskers from their mothers were analyzed. This included n = 1895 chronologically subsampled whisker segments for bulk …

Repeatable, convergent outcomes are prima facie evidence for determinism in evolutionary processes. Among fishes, well-known examples include microevolutionary habitat transitions into the water column, where freshwater populations (e.g., sticklebacks, cichlids, and whitefishes) recurrently diverge toward slender-bodied pelagic forms and deep-bodied benthic forms. However, the consequences of such processes at deeper macroevolutionary scales in the marine environment are less clear. We applied a phylogenomics-based integrative, comparative approach to test hypotheses about the scope and strength of convergence in a marine fish clade with a worldwide distribution (snappers and fusiliers, family Lutjanidae) featuring multiple water-column transitions over the past 45 million years. …
