Treating Anemia Of Chronic Disease, Sarit Fischer
Treating Anemia Of Chronic Disease, Sarit Fischer
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Anemia of chronic disease (ACD) is the result of altered iron metabolism, blunted erythropoiesis, and shortened red blood cell survival caused by inflammatory cytokines. Hepcidin plays a key role in anemia of chronic disease by inducing endocytosis of the iron exporter ferroportin. Iron is trapped in enterocytes, hepatocytes, and macrophages, and is unavailable for hemoglobin synthesis. When treating the underlying disease is not an option, or anemia is severe, ACD should be treated. While oral iron supplementation is not suitable for ACD, intravenous iron may be effective. Erythropoiesis stimulating agents are a common approach to treating ACD, but a large …

Benzoporphyrin-Based Photosensitizing Nanocomposites For Optoelectronic Applications, Wittawat Keawsongsaeng
Benzoporphyrin-Based Photosensitizing Nanocomposites For Optoelectronic Applications, Wittawat Keawsongsaeng
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A new series of meso-bifunctionalized benzoporphyrin derivatives bearing a p-diphenylaminophenylethynyl and a p-carboxylphenylethynyl meso-groups, and 2 p-carboxyl groups in a trans-fashion on a benzoporphyrin core is successfully synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Impact of electron-donating diphenylamino and electron-withdrawing surface-anchoring carboxyl groups on photophysical and electrochemical properties of the target benzoporphyrins was investigated in comparison with those of their benchmark analog containing one carboxylphenylethylnyl and three phenyl meso-groups by UV-visible spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry. The results show that while the p-carboxylphenylethynyl group give electronic contribution to the molecules by lowering energy gap, a role of the p-diphenylaminophenylethynyl group is found …

Dye-Encapsulated Ethyl Cellulose As Fluorescence Sensor For Aldehyde Detection, Jinnawat Jongkhumkrong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Over past years, even though lung cancer as one of vital cancer-related mortalities worldwide has inevitably exhibited the highest death rate of entire cancers, there is no facile and convenient diagnosis approaches. The previous researches have reported about long-chain aldehyde compounds such as hexanal, heptanal, octanal, and nonanal as the crucial biomarkers of lung cancer. Nevertheless, the sensing platform for long-chain aldehyde detection have been rarely reported. In this research, the helicene dye-encapsulated ethyl cellulose (EC@dye-NH) nanosensors have achieved the potentially sensitive and specific detection of long-chain aldehyde in aqueous media. As a proof-of-concept, the intrinsic hydrazine group of dye-NH …

The literature supports the use of family-centered early intervention(EI) for young children with or at risk for cerebral palsy (CP) to promote the children’s motor development. Young children with or at risk for delayed motor development in their first three years of life are entitled to EI under Part C of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act. Identifying current EI provided for young children with delayed motor development is essential to detect possible gaps and factors that could prevent therapists from providing the best EI. Understanding the parent’s perspective on the implementation of activities outside therapy to maximize the …
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury-Induced Alterations In Inflammation And Muscle Physiology, Emily R. Hunt
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury-Induced Alterations In Inflammation And Muscle Physiology, Emily R. Hunt
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Long term weakness and atrophy of the quadriceps muscle are a direct result of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and persist for up to 10 years post injury. Muscle atrophy ensues regardless of ligamentous reconstruction surgery, indicating that muscle atrophy following injury is a function of the ligament rupture and not reconstruction surgery. Elucidating the mechanisms underlying quadriceps atrophy following ACL rupture is crucial for developing interventions to restore proper quadriceps size and mitigate weakness thereby allowing for improved patient function. In addition to understanding the specific mechanisms that contribute to quadriceps atrophy following ACL rupture, the timing of atrophic …

Determining The Role Of Satellite Cells During Skeletal Muscle Adaptation, Davis A. Englund
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Physical inactivity, advancing age, limb immobilization, degenerative diseases and various systemic diseases (many cancers, sepsis, HIV, COPD, kidney disease) all lead to skeletal muscle wasting. The loss of muscle mass is of major clinical importance because it leads to an increased risk for morbidity, disability, and the loss of independence; collectively contributing to a substantive increase in healthcare utilization and cost. The prevalence of cachexia (disease-induced muscle wasting) can reach as high as 80% in certain patient populations and the average cost per hospital stay is $4,641 more than in non-cachectic patients. Direct healthcare costs attributable to sarcopenia were estimated …

To examine the hypothesis that the spatial frequency spectra of urban and indoor environments differ from the natural environment in ways that may promote the development of myopia. Methods: A total of 814 images were analyzed from three datasets; University of California Berkeley (UCB), University of Texas (UT), and Botswana (UPenn). Images were processed in Matlab (Mathworks Inc) to map the camera color characteristics to human cone sensitivities. From the photopic luminance images generated, two-dimensional spatial frequency (SF) spectra were calculated and converted to one-dimensional spectra by rotational averaging. The spatial filtering profile of a 0.4 Bangerter foil, which has …
Electrolytic Oxidative Coupling Of Alcohols With Aldehydes To Form Esters, Katherine L. Verboom
Electrolytic Oxidative Coupling Of Alcohols With Aldehydes To Form Esters, Katherine L. Verboom
Honors College Theses
There are copious amounts of naturally occurring and synthetic esters known that have a wide range of applications in industry to produce fine chemicals. Traditional methods of ester synthesis involve a reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol in the presence of a Bronsted acid catalyst. The primary objective of this research project was to carry out the ester synthesis using the electrochemical coupling of aldehydes with alcohols instead of with a Bronsted acid catalyst because the electrochemical coupling would be an all-around better alternative of ester synthesis than the traditional method of using the catalyst. Electrochemistry has long …

All animals need to find and compete for food, shelter, and mates in order to survive and reproduce. They also need to avoid being eaten by predators. Optimal foraging theory provides a framework to examine the trade-offs individuals make while foraging for food, taking into account an animal’s body condition, predation pressure, quality of food resources, and food patch availability in the habitat. Here we describe an activity that uses Giving Up Densities (GUDs), which could be used as part of a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) or as a stand-alone activity. GUDs provide an experimental approach to quantify the …

AES Faculty Publications and Presentations
Estimating the population sizes of animals is a key skill for any student interested in ecology, conservation, or management. However, counting animals in natural habitats is difficult, and the many techniques that exist each rely on assumptions that can bias results. Most wildlife courses teach one or two of these methods, but rarely are students given an opportunity to compare approaches and explore how underlying assumptions affect the accuracy of estimates. Here, we describe a hands-on activity in which students estimate the size of a single population of animals using multiple methods: strip censuses, scat counts, and camera traps. They …

Biotelemetry is used by researchers to track the interactions of animals with each other and the environment. While advancing technology has led to the development of numerous biotelemetry tools, radio telemetry remains the most common method for tracking small animals. Moreover, telemetry tracking of animal movement is an important skill for entry-level positions in wildlife biology. Thus, hands-on experience using radio telemetry provides students with an advantage as they pursue careers in wildlife biology, as well as an opportunity to build science process skills. We present a lesson in which students use radio telemetry to track animals; collect, analyze and …

Fabrication, Development, And Characterization Of Hipco Swcnt - Alginate Hydrogel Composites For Cellular Product Applications, Fabian Armando Alvarez-Primo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, we designed, synthesized, and characterized ultrahigh purity single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-alginate hydrogel composites. Among the parameters of importance in the formation of an alginate-based hydrogel composite with single-walled carbon nanotubes, are their varying degrees of purity, their particulate agglomeration and their dose-dependent correlation to cell viability, all of which have an impact on the resultant compositeâ??s efficiency and effectiveness towards biomedical applications. To promote their homogenous dispersion by preventing agglomeration of the SWCNT, at first, we used three different surfactants-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-anionic), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB-cationic), and Pluronic F108 (nonionic). After experimentation and corroboration through evidence obtained …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Extracellular matrix has been broadly applied and show great promise in medical applications and tissue engineering. Product of extracellular matrix (ECM) should be treated with decellularization and purification process. Supercritical carbon dioxide treatment is of particular interest for purifying ECM because of its medically available and rapid speed of process. However, it is not fully researched in treatment of biomaterials for tissue engineering. Therefore, we investigated optimal conditions of supercritical carbon dioxide processing in different extracting parameters from porcine adipose tissue. The 3-day, dual treatment including enzymatic decellularization and supercritical fluid extraction of pork adipose tissue were performed. Two types …
