Juvenile Fluoxetine Treatment Mediates An Anxiogenic Phenotype That Is Ameliorated By Its Re-Exposure In Adulthood, Francisco Javier Flores Ramirez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accumulating preclinical evidence indicates that early-life exposure to psychotropic medications induce an anxiogenic-like behavioral profile in later life. However, these preclinical approaches have been conducted primarily using male subjects. This is problematic since clinical data indicates that women are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders than their male counterparts, and thus, women are prescribed with psychotropic medications like fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), at significantly higher rates. Therefore, the goal of this Dissertation is to examine whether alterations in behavioral responses to anxiety-eliciting stimuli are exhibited in adulthood, as a result of early-life FLX exposure. …

Examining The Role Of Perceptual Biases In Health Care Utilization Among Adults, Sandra L. Oviedo Ramirez Jan 2020

Examining The Role Of Perceptual Biases In Health Care Utilization Among Adults, Sandra L. Oviedo Ramirez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A large body of literature has identified significant racial and ethnic disparities in health care and health outcomes. In an effort to gain an understanding of how to achieve health equity, it is crucial that we broaden our search for factors beyond access factors that may explain these observed disparities. The present study examined how cultural differences related to attention (context vs. focal) and attribution (internal vs. external) influence individuals' propensity to identify symptoms as potential markers of poor health, and ultimately, report less utilization of professional health care services. Using a community sample of 252 (n = 134 Latinos …

Environmental Governance For Whom? Examining The Political, Institutional, Fiscal, And Legal Determinants Of State Environmental Agency Budget Policy In The Us, Andrew R. Duggan Jan 2020

Environmental Governance For Whom? Examining The Political, Institutional, Fiscal, And Legal Determinants Of State Environmental Agency Budget Policy In The Us, Andrew R. Duggan

Theses and Dissertations

Budgets are a prospective tool of governance, and appropriations are a planning vehicle reflecting: bureaucracies’ values, complex interactions, collective preferences, political influences, and available resources. Research spanning 30 years finds that environmental pollution is a key determinant of environmental budgets in the US, though myriad factors, actors, and subsystems are important to consider. Due to federalism and devolution of responsibilities and authorities, environmental governance falls largely to the states. While the dynamics that shape state environmental budget policy have received scholarly interest, theoretically-driven examinations of environmental appropriations remain limited within the public budgeting and environmental policy literature.

Behavior Change Techniques To Promote Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy: A Theory-Based Meta-Analysis, Caroline A. Orr Jan 2020

Behavior Change Techniques To Promote Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy: A Theory-Based Meta-Analysis, Caroline A. Orr

Theses and Dissertations

Despite significant progress, smoking during pregnancy remains one of the leading preventable causes of adverse fetal and maternal health outcomes. Using the current best practice standard of psychosocial counseling, only about one out of every 20 pregnant women quits smoking, and relapse rates are very high. Developing more effective interventions to promote smoking cessation during pregnancy is a critical public health priority that requires a thorough understanding of behavior change and its complex pathways and determinants. As such, the purpose of this three-part study was to conduct the first systematic theory-based evidence synthesis of smoking cessation interventions during pregnancy, and …

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and fatal interstitial lung disease with no current cure. Progression of IPF is difficult to predict as the clinical course can be highly variable and range from a rapidly deteriorating state to a relatively stable state, or may be characterized by a slow progressive decline. Therefore, the need for an accurate diagnosis and improved tools for monitoring and managing IPF is of paramount importance, all for understanding the mitochondrial structure and the function played in the IPF. Mitochondrial DNA copy number (MtDCN) has been correlated with mortality in IPF patients and is a …

State Obligations Under Public International Law During Pandemics, Michaela S. Halpern

Emory International Law Review Recent Developments

COVID-19 became an international pandemic affecting every country and threatening a global economic collapse. This Article examines countries' obligations under public international law to prevent and contain pandemics, and subsequent responsibilities to help other countries during pandemics. International Human Rights law recognizes a right to health and includes obligations. Nonetheless, it lacks a sufficient enforcement mechanism. Pandemics are analogous to war; therefore, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) can help as countries utilize R2P to protect against atrocities. This Article argues that R2P is not merely a responsibility to protect against the worst that humankind has to offer but against the …

Emory International Law Review Recent Developments

The United States (U.S.) has codified protections against discrimination within the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. But, as history has proven, this is not enough. In the U.S., employment-related discrimination is one of the most commonly reported forms of discrimination across all ethnic groups. As a result, in recent years, minority groups have faced real consequences. This trend in the workplace extends across many countries. This Comment provides a comparative analysis of federal workplace discrimination protections for LGBT individuals across nations similar to the U.S. The focus will be on the U.S., the United Kingdom (U.K.), and Canada—all English-speaking, common law …

Living With Moral Schizophrenia, Rachel Hecke Jan 2020

Living With Moral Schizophrenia, Rachel Hecke

Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest

A response to Michael Stocker's essay titled "The Schizophrenia of Modern Ethical Theories". When attempting to follow an ethical theory, a dilemma is created between one’s justifications for action according to their chosen moral theory such as duties and obligations, and the motivations or desires behind the action. Although this dilemma can lead to a divide in one's psyche, especially in regards to personal relationships, this schizophrenia isn't all that bad to endure.

Assessing Pepper Pungency By Using Rt-Qpcr To Measure Pun1 Expression, Sam Blechman

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Capsicum spp. evolved capsaicin as a chemical defense to deter consumption of its fruits by mammals, allowing birds to disperse the seeds throughout a greater range. The Pun1 locus codes for a capsaicin synthase (CS), the expression of which is a direct determinant of capsaicin accumulation. RT-qPCR was used to measure low-abundance mRNA transcripts. The aim of this study was to use RT-qPCR to measure Pun1 expression in cDNA synthesized from total RNA extracted from placental tissue of Capsicum annuum and chinense cultivars. A secondary aim was to troubleshoot the protocol designed for this experiment to verify the efficacy of …

Brian Friel’S Translations, A Play On Power, Space, And History/ Archaeology, Maryam Beyad, Mohammad Bagher Shabanpour

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Geography has received great attention since the 19th century. Kant established it as a discipline which resulted in the development of geographical equipment. Consequently, surveying projects were launched in England. This paper argues that Friel’s Translations depicts the extinction of the Irish culture, done by the Army’s implementation of Ireland Ordnance Survey in 1830, in which Irish/Gaelic toponyms, carrying a great volume of a people’s History/ Archaeology, were anglicised. The English Empire strengthened its domination over Ireland through creating new maps of the Northern territories. The paper does a Foucauldian reading of geography, as a contemporary knowledge, which aided the …

Family Separation Under The Trump Administration: Applying An International Criminal Law Framework, Reilly Frye Jan 2020

Family Separation Under The Trump Administration: Applying An International Criminal Law Framework, Reilly Frye

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

In April 2018, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the “Zero Tolerance Policy.” The policy significantly increased criminal prosecution of immigrants entering the United States without inspection. Increased adult prosecution directly led to family separation. Parents were sent to federal jail and their children went to the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Neither institution communicated with the other, and the United States government lost track of parents and children. The government separated nearly 3,000 children from their parents, going as far as deporting over 400 parents to their countries of origin while their children remained in the United States. Many of …

Do Patients Judge Success Of Treatment And Patient Acceptable Symptom State Based On Current Self-Reported Health Status?, Ryan Jacobson, Daniel Kang, Jeff Houck

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Background: Value-based care models call for better interpretation of patient-reported outcomes. Patients may reference health status differently when appraising if an intervention was successful versus if their current state is acceptable. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between success of treatment (SOT), patient acceptable symptom state (PASS), and PROMIS measure T-scores, following a single primary care physical therapy encounter.

Methods: Cross-sectional study. Ninety-two patients with musculoskeletal complaints were administered standard SOT and PASS questions, and PROMIS Physical Function, Pain Interference, and Self-Efficacy for Managing Symptoms measures. Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Background: Value-based healthcare models will require prioritization of the patient’s voice in their own care toward better outcomes. The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System® (PROMIS) gives patients a voice and leads providers to actionable treatments across a broad range of diagnoses. However, better interpretation of PROMIS measures is needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of PROMIS Physical Function (PF), Self-Efficacy for Managing Symptoms (SE), Pain Interference (PI), Fatigue, and Depression measures to discriminate patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) in primary care, determining if that accuracy is stable over time and/or retained when PROMIS score thresholds …
