The Late Campanian (Late Cretaceous), upper part of the El Disecado Member, El Gallo Formation, Baja California, México, preserves a rich fossil assemblage of microvertebrates and macrovertebrates, silicified logs, macroscopic plant remains, and pollen that was likely deposited as the distal part of a subaerial fan. The unit was episodic and high energy, with its salient features deriving from active river channels and sheet, debris-flow deposits. Landscape stability is indicated by the presence of compound paleosol horizons, containing Fe2O3 mottling in B horizons, cutans, and calcium carbonate concretions. All of these features indicate wet/dry cyclicity in subsurface …

Wiley Periodicals, Inc. © 2020 International League Against Epilepsy The mechanism(s) for sudden death in epilepsy (SUDEP) remain(s) unknown, but seizure spread to brainstem areas serving autonomic and respiratory function is critical. In a rat model, we established a mechanism for SUDEP that involves seizure-induced laryngospasm and obstructive apnea lasting until respiratory arrest. We hypothesized that DBA/2J mice, which display lethal audiogenic seizures, would be protected from death by implanting a tracheal T-tube as a surrogate airway. In a 2 × 2 design, mice were implanted with either open or closed tracheal T-tubes and treated with either low-dose ketamine/xylazine to …

© 2020, The Author(s). The response to viral infection generally includes an activation of the adaptive immune response to produce cytotoxic T cells and neutralizing antibodies. We propose that SARS-CoV-2 activates the innate immune system through the renin-angiotensin and kallikrein-bradykinin pathways, blocks interferon production and reduces an effective adaptive immune response. This model has therapeutic implications.

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) population, which may require treatment with immunosuppressive medications, may be uniquely vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. In fact, there is some evidence these medications may inhibit the cytokine storm that is theorized to cause a rapid decline seen in COVID-19. In addition, the digestive symptoms of COVID-19 can be difficult to distinguish from the activation of IBD. We present an interesting case of a Crohn's patient inadvertently administering anti-cytokine therapy during the pre-symptomatic period of COVID-19 infection. Immune suppression during early infection with SARS-COV2 risks a poor immune response to the virus and could theoretically result …

Background: Recently, TDP-43 has been recognized as a common proteinopathy in the “oldest old” and a neuropathological comorbidity in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, since it has a low concentration in cerebrospinal fluid, the presence of TDP-43 in AD is rarely investigated in vivo. Methods: Twenty-four patients with amyloid PET confirmed AD and 15 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. TDP-43 level in plasma neuronal-derived exosomes (NDEs) was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: TDP-43 level was elevated in patients with AD compared with HCs (median 1.08 ng/ml, …

© 2020 The Authors Purpose: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is an atypical parkinsonian syndrome and often difficult to discriminate clinically from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Parkinson's disease (PD) in early stages. Although a characteristic metabolic brain network has been reported for MSA, it is unknown whether this network can provide a clinically useful biomarker in different centers. This study was aimed to identify and cross-validate MSA-related brain network and assess its ability for differential diagnosis and clinical correlations in Chinese and American patient cohorts. Methods: We included 18F-FDG PET scans retrospectively from 128 clinically diagnosed parkinsonian patients (34 MSA, …

Nono Is A Novel Co-Factor Of Prdm1 And Regulates Inflammatory Response In Monocyte Derived-Dendritic Cells, K. Lee, S. H. Jang, H. Tian, S. J. Kim

Journal Articles

© Copyright © 2020 Lee, Jang, Tian and Kim. Proper expression of the transcription factor, Positive regulatory domain 1 (PRDM1), is required for maintaining homeostasis of human monocyte derived-dendritic cells (MO-DCs). The molecular mechanisms and gene targets of PRDM1 in B and T lymphocytes have been identified. However, the function of PRDM1 in dendritic cells (DCs) remains unclear. We investigate co-regulators of PRDM1 in MO-DCs identified by mass spectrometry (MS) and co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP). Notably, non-POU domain-containing octamer-binding protein (NonO) was found to be a PRDM1 binding protein in the nucleus of MO-DCs. NonO is recruited to the PRDM1 binding site …

Ultrasound Powered Piezoelectric Neurostimulation Devices: A Commentary., T. Sun, J. Wright, T. Datta-Chaudhuri

Journal Articles

Conventional neurostimulation systems for preclinical research can be bulky and invasive due to the need for batteries or wired interfaces. Emerging as a new neural interface technique, ultrasound-powered piezoelectric neural stimulators work by converting ultrasound energy to electrical charge for neural stimulation. In addition to the benefits of wireless powering and miniaturization leading to less traumatic surgery, piezoelectric neural stimulators can also exhibit prolonged operational lifetimes for a long-term stable neural interface, and show promise for clinical translation. As one of first steps to demonstrate the value of ultrasound-powered piezoelectric neural interface, Li et al. developed a piezoelectric stimulator to …

© 2020, The Author(s). The concept that exposure in utero to maternal anti-brain antibodies contributes to the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been entertained for over a decade. We determined that antibodies targeting Caspr2 are present at high frequency in mothers with brain-reactive serology and a child with ASD, and further demonstrated that exposure in utero to a monoclonal anti-Caspr2 antibody, derived from a mother of an ASD child, led to an-ASD like phenotype in male offspring. Now we propose a new model to study the effects of in utero exposure to anti-Caspr2 antibody. Dams immunized with the …
