Eclipses are astronomical phenomena that occur infrequently enough, either spatially or temporally, that for most animals, experiencing an eclipse may only happen once in a lifetime. Thus, an eclipse can provide a unique combination of meteorological and environmental conditions, through which animal behavior can be evaluated. In this study we observed and documented bat behavior (order Chiroptera) in northwest Georgia during a partial solar eclipse in 2024. The main objective of this study is to give for the first time an overview of the geographic, seasonal and intraspecific variations in European eel (Anguilla Anguilla) stock in the Egyptian different habitats. The geographical distribution, general status as well as stocks temporal variation in Egypt are analyzed examining long term catch data sets. European eels are found in the Nile Delta and along the Mediterranean coast, occupying the brackish northern lagoons (Edko, Burullus, Manzala) and the hyper saline Bardawil lagoon. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) exerts substantial control on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the Southern Ocean, playing a key role in modulating the global carbon cycle and climate. However, the orbital-scale forcing and future changes in the strength and position of the ACC remain elusive. Here, we reconstruct the history of ACC extending back to the Last Interglacial (LIG; 128-113 ka) using sediment cores from the Scotia Sea. Based on high-resolution measurements of sortable silt mean grain size, we find that bottom current speed is synchronized with eccentricity, superimposed by precession. Bioanthropology integrates biological and cultural perspectives, thereby enhancing our understanding of human health across populations. Myopia is a significant refractive error affecting potentially 2.5 billion people globally by the end of the decade. Bioanthropological theories suggest that pupil diameter and distance contribute to axial elongation and the progression of myopia. Nevertheless, current literature lacks empirical validation through rigorous hypothesis testing, highlighting a gap in comprehension. Alloplastic implants emphasize the importance of a comprehensive understanding of both clinical and histological aspects, which are attributed to enhancing patient satisfaction and surgical success rates. The study aims to assess the viability of different implant materials and their related risks over time. A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, and EBSCOhost, to identify 79 records. After eliminating duplicates and applying specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, four new studies were included for evaluation, focusing on postoperative outcomes related to alloplastic implants in rhinoplasty. Forensic anthropologists working in university laboratories are often curators of long-term unidentified human remains cases. Here, we review how and why anthropologists can effectively move toward case resolution by drawing on literature and collaborative best practices from the field of social work. Borrowing from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) standards for case management, we detail five standards that can be effectively followed during the forensic anthropological case investigation to ensure culturally sensitive and victim-centered approaches to human identification. The winds of change appeared to blow on June 15, 2020, when the Su- preme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County. The Bostock decision—in which the Court held that discrimination based upon an employee’s gender identity violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act—has been heralded as a revolutionary triumph for the LGBTQ+ community. And yet, while the Bos- tock decision dictated that employers cannot terminate people based on their gender identity, it failed in the most important regard: establishing gender identity as a protected constitutional class. This study examines how perceived political party divide may foster affective polarization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on nationally representative sample surveys of U.S. and South Korean adults, we investigate the relationship between attitude strength toward COVID-19 vaccines, perceived polarization, and affective polarization. Results suggest that individuals with stronger attitudes toward vaccines are more likely to perceive a greater ideological divide between political parties, which in turn, is associated with increased animosity toward the opposing party. Applying the mediation model to the South Korean sample yielded consistent findings, suggesting that the mechanism by which strong attitudes relate to negative emotions …

This study examines student resource choice, perceptions, and self-regulated learning (SRL) in preparation for a flipped undergraduate microbiology course. Drawing on Expectancy-Value Theory, the investigation explored whether students prefer video lectures or complete note sets for pre-class preparation, how SRL strategies evolve over time, and the relationship between flipped classroom perceptions and in-class engagement. Data were collected across multiple course units using surveys—including a modified Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire—and analysis of resource selection and classroom participation. The results indicate a strong and increasing preference for slides over video lectures. Additionally, significant increases in higher-order cognitive strategies were observed alongside …

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore dieticians’ perceptions of internal and external reinforcements and barriers to childhood obesity interventions in children’s hospitals within Northeast Maryland. The study was framed by the social cognitive theory described by Bandura. As applied to this study, the theory focuses on prevention and intervention strategies used by dieticians working in children’s hospitals while offering educational interventions and other health care services. Access to clinical informatics specialist (CIS) consultations is essential for optimizing electronic health record (EHR) use in acute care hospital systems. Limited availability of CIS support contributes to clinician burnout, workflow inefficiencies, and patient safety risks. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify strategies to improve access to CIS consultations in acute care settings. A comprehensive literature search across multiple databases yielded 656 articles, with 24 meeting inclusion criteria based on relevance and methodological rigor, evaluated using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice appraisal tools. Clinicians are constantly bombarded with an onslaught of newly published data, yet they must make clinical decisions despite a dearth of clinical data. Sometimes, they may fall back on clinical practices entrenched by experience, unaware that they are upheld by dogmatic tradition rather than robust evidence. Ideally, the totality of evidence must be assessed and utilized for clinical decision-making, irrespective of entrenched orthodoxy. Here, we explore the questions, how much evidence is needed to revise established clinical practices and, more fundamentally, can data alone truly catalyze such shifts.

SARS-CoV-2 variants have demonstrated distinct epidemiological patterns and clinical presentations throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding variant-specific differences at the respiratory epithelium is crucial for understanding their pathogenesis. Here, we utilized human nasal organoid air-liquid interface (HNO-ALI) cell cultures to compare the viral replication kinetics, innate immune response, and epithelial damage of six different strains of SARS-CoV-2 (B.1.2, WA, Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron). All variants replicated efficiently in HNO-ALIs, but with distinct replication kinetic patterns. The Delta variant exhibited delayed replication kinetics, achieving a steady state at 6 days post-infection compared to 3 days for other variants. Cytokine analysis revealed …

TFEB, a master regulator of autophagy and lysosomal biogenesis, is activated by several cellular stresses including lysosomal damage, but its underlying mechanism is unclear. TFEB activation during lysosomal damage depends on the ATG conjugation system, which mediates lipidation of ATG8 proteins. Here, we newly identify ATG conjugation-independent TFEB regulation that precedes ATG conjugation-dependent regulation, designated Modes I and II, respectively. We reveal unique regulators of TFEB in each mode: APEX1 in Mode I and CCT7 and/or TRIP6 in Mode II. APEX1 interacts with TFEB independently of the ATG conjugation system, and is required for TFEB stability, while both CCT7 and …

The mechanisms governing mammalian proton pump V-ATPase function are of fundamental and medical interest. The assembly and disassembly of cytoplasmic V1 domain with the membrane-embedded V0 domain of V-ATPase is a key aspect of V-ATPase localization and function. Here, we show that the mammalian protein ATG16L1, primarily appreciated for its role in canonical autophagy and in noncanonical membrane atg8ylation processes, controls V-ATPase. ATG16L1 knockout elevated V-ATPase activity, increased V1 presence on endomembranes, and increased the number of acidified intracellular compartments. The Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) is a foundational resource for allele frequency data, widely used in genomic research and clinical interpretation. However, traditional estimates rely on individual-level genetic ancestry groupings that may obscure variation in recently admixed populations. To improve resolution, we applied local ancestry inference (LAI) to over 27 million variants in two admixed groups: Admixed American (n = 7612) and African/African American (n = 20,250), deriving ancestry-specific allele frequencies. We show that 78.5% and 85.1% of variants in these groups, respectively, exhibit at least a twofold difference in ancestry-specific frequencies.
