The participants were 6 health and fitness club managers who succeeded in improving customer retention while employed at 5 fitness clubs in Southeast Texas. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, a review of company websites, and social media pages. General and inductive analysis were used to analyze the data. One overarching theme, …

Educating Nurses About Poststroke Depression And Using The Phq-2/9, Mary Mcmullen Jan 2020

Educating Nurses About Poststroke Depression And Using The Phq-2/9, Mary Mcmullen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Stroke has affected more than 7 million people and up to 33% of those patients reporting depression. The lack of screening for depression for patients post stroke can delay treatment for depression and hinder or lengthen recovery. The purpose of this project was to develop a nursing staff education program on using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) tools (PHQ-2 and PHQ-9) at the bedside to detect signs and symptoms of depression and identify nurse-driven interventions. Using the Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model and Orem's self-care model for guidance, an interdisciplinary team was assembled to collaborate on the development. A …

The Experience Of Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In The Workplace, Josephine Laverne Harris Jan 2020

The Experience Of Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In The Workplace, Josephine Laverne Harris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with children for many decades, but it can continue into adulthood. However, little research has focused on adults with ADHD or the specific processes through which such adults mitigate the challenges they face, especially in the workplace. The purpose of this qualitative, grounded theory study was to provide a better understanding of the strategies and support systems adults with ADHD use to overcome workplace challenges. Self-efficacy theory grounded the study, allowing for an understanding of the lived experiences of adults with ADHD in the workplace. The researcher conducted 12 semistructured interviews with adults with …

Luxe: Combining High Energy And Intensity To Spark The Vacuum, Beate Heinemann, Tom Heinzl, Andreas Ringwald Jan 2020

Luxe: Combining High Energy And Intensity To Spark The Vacuum, Beate Heinemann, Tom Heinzl, Andreas Ringwald

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The vacuum of quantum electrodynamics (QED) can be viewed as a medium akin to a dielectric which can be polarised by external fields. If these are sufficiently strong, the response of the vacuum becomes nonlinear and involves phenomena such as lightby- light scattering (‘nonlinear optics’) and, in extremis, ‘dielectric breakdown’, i.e. real pair production, if a critical field strength is exceeded. The LUXE experiment aims to realise near-critical fields through collisions of photons stemming from an ultra-intense optical laser with high energy electrons or photons provided by the European XFEL linear accelerator. This set-up provides a golden opportunity to enter …

Foraminifera Of The Gault Clay Formation: An Update, Malcolm B. Hart, Thomas Fogerty, Christopher W. Smart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The foraminifera of the Gault Clay Formation (Middle and Upper Albian) are reviewed and their biostratigraphy compared to that of the standard ammonite-based zonation and the original bed numbers that are used by most workers on the formation. The change from an aragonitic assemblage in the Lower Gault to an assemblage dominated by agglutinated foraminifera in the Upper Gault is discussed in terms of changing palaeogeography and sea-level.

Removal Of Babies At Birth And The Moral Distress Of Midwives, Wendy Marsh, Ann Robinson, Jill Shawe, Ann Gallagher

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background Midwives and nurses appear vulnerable to moral distress when caring for women whose babies are removed at birth. They may experience professional dissatisfaction and their relationships with women, families and colleagues may be compromised. The impact of moral distress may manifest as anger, guilt, frustration, anxiety and a desire to give up their profession. While there has been much attention exploring the concept of moral distress in midwifery, this is the first study to explore its association in this context. Aim This article explores midwives’ experiences of moral distress when providing care to women whose babies were removed at …

Ecosystem Services Of Temporary Streams Differ Between Wet And Dry Phases In Regions With Contrasting Climates And Economies, Rachel Stubbington, Mike Acreman, Vicenç Acuña, Philip J. Boon, Andrew J. Boulton, Judy England, David Gilvear, Tim Sykes, Paul J. Wood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Temporary streams are dynamic ecosystems in which mosaics of flowing, ponded and dry habitats support high biodiversity of both aquatic and terrestrial species. Species interact within habitats to perform or facilitate processes that vary in response to changing habitat availability. A natural capital approach recognizes that, through such processes, the ‘natural assets’ of all ecosystems deliver services that benefit people. The ecosystem services of temporary streams remain largely unexplored, in particular those provided during ponded and dry phases. In addition, recent characterizations have focused on dryland systems, and it remains unclear how service provision varies among different climatic regions, or …

Chronic lung disease is a huge, growing, but under reported problem in Africa. Following a survey in rural Uganda, which found 16% of the adult population had COPD, we developed a lung health programme aiming to raise awareness in the community of the risk factors for developing chronic lung disease and how to reduce the risks. A two-year train-the-trainer programme was conducted by healthcare workers (HCWs) in Masindi District, Uganda. Strategy and preliminary education materials were co-developed in a series of meetings with stakeholders including clinicians and community members. An initial group of HCWs were trained and further refned the …

Master-Field Simulations Of O(A)-Improved Lattice Qcd: Algorithms, Stability And Exactness, Anthony Francis, Patrick Fritzsch, Martin Lüscher, Antonio Rago Jan 2020

Master-Field Simulations Of O(A)-Improved Lattice Qcd: Algorithms, Stability And Exactness, Anthony Francis, Patrick Fritzsch, Martin Lüscher, Antonio Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In master-field simulations of lattice QCD, the expectation values of interest are obtained from a single or at most a few representative gauge-field configurations on very large lattices. If the light quarks are included, the generation of these fields using standard techniques is however challenging in view of various algorithmic instabilities and precision issues. Ways to overcome these problems are described here for the case of the O(α)-improved Wilson formulation of lattice QCD and the viability of the proposed measures is then checked in extensive simulations of the theory with flavours of quarks.
