Access To Justice And Legal Clinics: Developing A Reflective Lawyering Space Some Insights From The Italian Experience, Marzia Barbera, Venera Protopapa
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This paper first provides a brief description of the genesis of legal clinics in Italy, and highlights the motivations and expectations lying behind the emergence of the legal clinic movement in this context. Second, the paper gives a brief description of the institutional context of legal aid in Italy, and assesses its effectiveness in terms of granting legal assistance to those unable to afford a lawyer. The third and fourth parts then offer an account of court enforcement mechanisms that aim to ensure effective access to justice. Part three gives this account through the lens of court enforcement of the …

What Is Victory? What Is Loss? An Analysis Of The War On Terrorism, Hasani Gunn
What Is Victory? What Is Loss? An Analysis Of The War On Terrorism, Hasani Gunn
Augsburg Honors Review
Although first coined by then United States President Ronald Reagan in response to state-sponsored terrorism, the "War on Terrorism" has irrevocably evolved since 11 September 2001. Concerned with annihilating the terrorist threats both abroad and at home, deeper questions of the war on terrorism are unanswered. What does it mean for the state to win or lose against terrorists? Conversely, what does it mean for terrorists to win or lose against the state? More precisely, what do the outcomes of armed conflict mean and look like within the context ofthe war on terrorism? Current terrorism studies literature focuses on what …

Runoff Coefficients Of High-Flow Events In Undisturbed New England Basins, Iman Hosseini-Shakib, Kevin H. Gardner, Anne Lightbody
Runoff Coefficients Of High-Flow Events In Undisturbed New England Basins, Iman Hosseini-Shakib, Kevin H. Gardner, Anne Lightbody
New Hampshire EPSCoR
The New England region in the Northeast U.S. receives high annual precipitation as rain and snow, which results in floods that endanger people and infrastructure. Owing to the complexity of hydrologic systems, increases in the frequency and intensity of large precipitation events do not always translate into increases in surface runoff measured as event flow at the basin outlet. However, recent studies have recognized positive trends in the frequency and magnitude of high-flow events in New England. For high-flow events of equal or greater than 2-year daily runoff, the runoff coefficients, or the fraction of precipitation converted into surface runoff …
Social Class And Social Work In The Age Of Trump, Hanna Karpman, Joshua Miller
Social Class And Social Work In The Age Of Trump, Hanna Karpman, Joshua Miller
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
Social class has many meanings and components – economic, social, political, one’s sense of identity, and how class intersects with other social identities – so it is difficult to define it briefly and succinctly. These definitions are further complicated by a global lens, where family of origin, geography, and other factors can pre-determine social class. In this article, we explore the complexities and contradictions of social class in the context of the United States as we believe that this is important for social work, particularly in the age of Donald Trump, where class, and its intersection with race and immigration …

The widespread use of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been a source of concern because of their various effects on the endocrine system. These effects include metabolic disorders, complications in reproductive health, hormone-related cancers, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Of particular concern is bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic compound commonly found in consumer products such as water bottles, thermal receipt paper, and epoxy resins used in processed food packaging. Previous studies have shown that BPA can mimic estrogen through a variety of mechanisms and thus elicit an endocrine response. Some manufacturers have responded by removing BPA from their products; however, studies using …

Nowadays, technology has become more reliable that allowed human interaction to decrease while the machines have started to take over in many fields of interest. The Internet of things (IoT) represents the idea of machines ability to control entire systems without any human interactions. This paper proposes an IoT system that takes a picture of parked cars in a garage, extract the plate number and the location of the car, and places these information in a database. At the garage entrance, a terminal linked to the system allows the user to locate the parked car using the license plate no.. …

Exploration Of Factors Associated With Perceptions Of Community Safety Among Youth In Hillsborough County, Florida: A Convergent Parallel Mixed-Methods Approach, Yingwei Yang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Youth perceived safety is not only linked to crime and violence in a neighborhood but is also associated with health risk behaviors and certain neighborhood characteristics. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to measure the co-occurring effects of individual and community risk factors by conducting a secondary data analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM) and to explore reasons for youth feeling safe/unsafe in their community using photovoice methodology.
Methods: Syndemic theory/model served as the theoretical framework to guide this mixed-methods study with a convergent parallel design. The quantitative strand (first manuscript) utilized an existing dataset collected from middle …
Moral Responsibility, Justice, And Freedom, Jonathan Smith
Moral Responsibility, Justice, And Freedom, Jonathan Smith
Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion
Freedom, and in particular, the freedom of human beings, is a hot topic within the field of metaphysics. In this paper, instead of arguing for the truth of a particular position on freedom, I explore whether a particular position, compatibilism, might be consistent with the existence of moral responsibility and retributive justice. To alleviate ambiguity, I construct a model by which the four primary positions on freedom might be clearly understood. I then distinguish between what I call ‘common-sense’ views of moral responsibility, and ‘complex’ views of moral responsibility. I select a particular complex view, which I term the ‘virtue’ …
