Assessments Of Fit And Usability Of Work-Life Supports In The Context Of Diversity And Perceptions Of Fairness, Cal J. Halvorsen, Indrani Saran, Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes

Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging

There is a robust literature that examines outcomes associated with work-life supports. Scholars have considered the “fit” between employee needs and the supports available while others have examined the “usability”—or the potential consequences of using—work-life supports. In this article, we suggest that “fit” and “usability” could be related to both employees’ own demographic, social, and cultural identities, as well as perceptions of fairness at the workplace. While scholars have focused on organizational justice and workplace fairness for quite some time, the context of diversity—in its many forms—has rarely been included in this conversation or has simply been added as a …

From Insight To Action With Appreciative Inquiry, Kristin Meyer

Books and Contributions to Books

Two people can view the same thing—the same data, issue, or set of circumstances—and discover different opportunities because of their unique perspectives. Sometimes when we engage in User Experience (UX) work, we uncover a problem or an unmet user need, and the way forward is unclear. At this point, it can be beneficial to pull together a group of people in your library who work in different departments and have various roles; the best ideas often emerge when we gather diverse viewpoints.

Simply talking about the issue is not usually effective, but numerous facilitation techniques can help lead groups from …

Enhancing Efficiency At Nonprofits With Analysis And Disclosure, David M. Schizer Jan 2020

Enhancing Efficiency At Nonprofits With Analysis And Disclosure, David M. Schizer

Faculty Scholarship

The U.S. nonprofit sector spends $2.54 trillion each year. If the sector were a country, it would have the eighth largest economy in the world, ahead of Brazil, Italy, Canada, and Russia. The government provides nonprofits with billions in tax subsidies, but instead of evaluating the quality of their work, it leaves this responsibility to nonprofit managers, boards, and donors. The best nonprofits are laboratories of innovation, but unfortunately some are stagnant backwaters, which waste money on out-of-date missions and inefficient programs. To promote more innovation and less stagnation, this Article makes two contributions to the literature.

First, this Article …

In the pages that follow, the militaries of the United States, Israel, and Sweden are examined to 1) determine what women specifically contribute within a military setting, and 2) argue that integration aligns with priorities of both feminism and national security.
