Organizational Influence On Knowledge Co-Production, Evora Dakota Glenn
Organizational Influence On Knowledge Co-Production, Evora Dakota Glenn
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches are needed to effectively address the challenges facing our complex social-ecological systems. To meet this need, many approaches, including co-production, have been proposed to overcome the difficult relationship between science and governance, often termed a ‘gap’, which can continue to impede natural resource problem solving. Co-production is an iterative process that engages scientists, managers, and community members in knowledge creation and problem solving. Evidence indicates that participants are more likely to view co-produced knowledge as more salient, legitimate, and credible, and that they are more likely to use it. Evidence also indicates that this iterative and …

How Leaders In Greek Life View Alcohol, Blake Miller
Masters Theses
The researcher in this study used qualitative methodology to explore perspectives of undergraduate student leaders in fraternity and sorority life at a mid-sized, Midwest institution on alcohol, especially within the Greek life system. Eight informants participated in semi-structured, open-ended interviews and were asked about their views on and experiences with alcohol, both as a new member and after having leadership experience. Informants were also asked about alcohol intervention and prevention measures. A majority of informants maintained or developed an indifferent or aversive view of alcohol, had decreased their personal levels of alcohol use, had made attempts to change the way …

Relationship Of Demographic Characteristics Of Occupational And Physical Therapists Towards Their Knowledge And Attitude On Person-Centered Care In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Sadashiv R. Aggarwal
Theses and Dissertations
The study aimed to assess the relationship of specific demographic characteristics of occupational (OTs) and physical therapists (PTs) with their knowledge and attitudes towards principles of Person-Centered Care (PCC) in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). The study further examined if knowledge and/or attitudinal differences exist between OTs and PTs towards PCC. The proposed descriptive study used the Person-Centered Care theory, which is a holistic (bio-psychosocial-spiritual) health care delivery approach. PCC delivers services that are respectful and individualized, allowing negotiation of care, and offering choice through a therapeutic relationship where persons receiving care are empowered to be involved in health decisions at …

Impact Of Performance-Based Budgeting On Quality Outcomes In U.S. Military Healthcare Facilities, Kimberly L. Decker Virginia Commonwealth University
Theses and Dissertations
Performance-based budgeting (PBB) is a variation of pay for performance that is applicable to government programs. It works by increasing or decreasing funding based on pre-established performance thresholds, which incentivizes organizations to improve performance. In late 2006, the U.S. Army implemented a PBB program in all of its healthcare facilities due to rising concerns over costs and quality in its facilities. The U.S. Army’s PBB program tied hospital-level funding decisions to performance on key cost and quality-related metrics. This study examined the impact of this program and a subsequent PBB program on quality improvement in U.S. Army healthcare facilities. Drawing …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) who practice in inpatient facilities are subject to reimbursement guidelines that can create difficulties in billing for services. The purpose of this project was to develop a billing framework to allow for hospital-based APRNs to bill inpatient professional services. A billing framework and billing tool was developed utilizing best evidence and presented to the steering committee work group. Feedback from the work group led to revisions of the framework, billing tool and the development of a billing guideline before being accepted into a larger billing initiative to be reviewed by senior leadership. The development of …
Portraits Of Professional Collaboration: Faculty-Librarian Teaching Partnerships, Carrie L. Forbes
Portraits Of Professional Collaboration: Faculty-Librarian Teaching Partnerships, Carrie L. Forbes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many regional accrediting organizations for higher education have embraced information literacy as a key component for both student success and student learning outcomes. Through embedded librarianship practices, librarians are now taking a leading role in developing and promoting users’ information literacy skills and in adopting an active classroom teaching approach. Faculty-librarian team teaching is a best practice for integrating information literacy into the higher education curricula, but the extant research has largely focused on the barriers to collaboration. Using Walsh and Kahn’s (2010) model of “collaborative working” as a conceptual framework, this dissertation explores the qualities and characteristics of four …

Organizations And Communities: A Symbiosis View, Hani Safadi, Richard Watson, Tanner Skousen
Faculty Publications
How can organizations and communities engage in mutually beneficial relationships? We develop a framework that explains how an open community’s engagement with an organization can be mutually beneficial to both in the long-term. We theorize how a symbiotic relationship between organizations and communities can be achieved by nurturing various forms of capital flow between organizations and communities as well as creating virtuous feedback loops within each other’s capital creation systems.
From A 'Super Spreader Of Mers' To A 'Super Stopper' Of Covid-19: Explaining The Evolution Of South Korea's Effective Crisis Management System, Seung-Youn Oh
Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
COVID-19 has placed global and national leadership under a serious stress test by threatening lives and livelihoods on an unprecedented scale. South Korea emerged as one of the first countries to flatten the transmission curve despite its high population density and proximity to China, without imposing the aggressive lockdowns or complete travel bans that China and many other countries adopted. This paper explores two questions. First, what kind of institutional and legal foundations explain South Korea’s strong public health response to the pandemic? Second, from a historical perspective, South Korea evaded the worst of the SARS outbreak in 2003 yet …

Analyzing Vertical Mergers: Accounting For The Unilateral Effects Tradeoff And Thinking Holistically About Efficiencies, Roger D. Blair, Christine Wilson, D. Daniel Sokol, Keith Klovers, Jeremy Sandford
UF Law Faculty Publications
With the adoption of the 2020 Vertical Merger Guidelines, the U.S. antitrust agencies have updated their guidance on vertical mergers for the Twenty-First Century. Although economists have long recognized the procompetitive benefits most vertical mergers generate, the law has not always followed suit, and has sometimes condemned vertical mergers for making the merged firm more efficient. In this article, we attempt to catalogue the extensive list of efficiencies that vertical mergers can generate, trace the often halting efforts to incorporate these insights into the law, and propose a framework that courts and agencies can use to assess the likely competitive …

The Power Of Investing In Volunteers: A Look Into The Volunteer Landscape Of Richmond, Virginia, Timothy Nesselrodt
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
The volunteer landscape across the country shows a demonstrable need for volunteers to help nonprofit organizations achieve their missions. For many, this need is undermined by constant volunteer turnover and low retention rates. The purpose of this paper is to examine any relationship between transformational leadership and volunteer retention. The information found indicates such a relationship exists and should be the topic of further research. In order to determine the impact organizations made on volunteers, this study used online, anonymous surveys distributed to volunteers. Volunteers responded in accordance with their experiences at both their longest and shortest held volunteer positions. …

The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
David Orr, in an article on ecological intelligence reminds us that the modern world was shaped by people who did not understand that our social and economic systems could not coexist with the rest of the biological or natural systems on Earth (Orr, 1994). My research is rooted in Orr’s argument and discovering ways to shift this degrading paradigm. With my belief in the power of education in empowering youth and my background in environmental and climate change studies, I see a future in great need of people who holistically understand the functions of all types of systems and can …
Institutional Racism In Child Welfare Organizations And Supervisory Support : A Mixed Methods Study, Sreyashi Chakravarty
Institutional Racism In Child Welfare Organizations And Supervisory Support : A Mixed Methods Study, Sreyashi Chakravarty
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The presence of racism within an organization is a threat to its overall health and working because it directly affects the well-being and morale of the employees. More specifically, previous studies have shown that racial and ethnic minority workers face discrimination related to lack of representation in higher positions, exclusion from decision-making bodies as well as discrimination from co-workers, and supervisors. Grounded in the Leader-Member Exchange Theory, this mixed-methods research revisits this problem by identifying previously unknown manifestations and predictors of workplace racism in child welfare agencies. The following research questions were developed: 1) What are the experiences of discrimination, …
Unpacking The Untapped Potential Of First-Line Supervisors : Sergeants' Role In Managing Police Discretion, Danielle Leigh Reynolds
Unpacking The Untapped Potential Of First-Line Supervisors : Sergeants' Role In Managing Police Discretion, Danielle Leigh Reynolds
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The operational uncertainties for police work—e.g. isolation, ambiguity, contextually contingent decision-making—force police departments to push discretion down to its lowest level employees. Consequently, officers are expected to exercise independent thought and judgment in response to the challenges confronted. Yet public criticism of police often breeds from officers’ “poor” decisions and the inordinate amount of discretion they are granted. Police organizations rarely experience crises for failing to control crime, rather it is failure to control police discretion that most often threatens a department’s legitimacy. Consequently, police departments rely on supervision to limit, constrain or shape officers’ discretion so that it mirrors …

When Life Gives You Diversity... : A History Of Racial Diversity And Conflict In Four Philadelphia Neighborhoods, 1960 - 2015, Jeaneé C. Miller
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The U.S. population has changed significantly since the 1950s, becoming markedly more racially diverse. Still, a large portion of America’s neighborhoods remain racially segregated – even in large, racially diverse cities, such as Philadelphia (Logan & Stults, 2011). As a result, there is a well-established body of research that has shown that residential segregation consistently produces negative effects for neighborhoods (Massey & Denton, 1993). In response, many scholars and policymakers have suggested that the most promising response to inequality due to segregation is racial residential integration (Denton, 2010; Ellen, 2000; Galster, 1992; Roisman, 2008). However, social science research has produced …

Strategic Planning And Research-Practice Partnerships As A Dynamic, Generative Duo?, Joel Malin, Muna Altowajri
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Strategic planning refers to a deliberative approach to producing decisions to major challenges. Research-practice partnerships (RPP) are long-term collaborations between researchers and practitioners organized to investigate solutions in school districts. Authors make the argument that RPPs could be, and in many cases ought to be, explicitly developed/focused around assisting educational organizations in their strategic planning endeavors—in terms of the development of these plans, and/or in terms of their execution.
Rapidly Advancing Information Technology Project Management Office Maturity Within A Fortune 1000 Company - A Study Designed To Accelerate Information Technology Project Management Office Maturity Through Action Research To Realize Increased Project Management Office Value In Reduced Time, Matthew Christian Muga
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The importance of a Project Management Office (PMO) in the world of Information Technology should never be underestimated. The collection of highly trained, skilled Project Managers (PMs), into a single collective PMO can provide a key strategic advantage for a company. However, in order for an IT Project Management Office to obtain a level of execution and project delivery success that can yield superior results, certain “Maturity” levels or milestones must be reached. Popular research and studies on maturity often claim that these levels cannot be reached in a short amount of time, as people and processes need to develop, …
