Do Firms Adapt To Climate Change? Evidence From Establishment-Level Data, Frank Weikai Li, Yupeng Lin, Zuben Jin, Zilong Zhang May 2020

Do Firms Adapt To Climate Change? Evidence From Establishment-Level Data, Frank Weikai Li, Yupeng Lin, Zuben Jin, Zilong Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines firms’ adaptation to long-term changes in climatic conditions. Using detailed information of establishments owned by U.S. public firms from 1990 to 2012, we show that higher abnormal temperatures over the previous five years in a county lead to a significant reduction in local employment and the number of establishments. Further tests suggest that the decline in employment and establishments is largely due to a decline in local consumer demand rather than lower labor productivity. We also find that firms more likely take adaptive actions when their managers are more likely to believe in, or are concerned about, …

Information Technology And Firm Employment, James Bessen May 2020

Information Technology And Firm Employment, James Bessen

Faculty Scholarship

Do firms displace labor with new information technologies such as “artificial intelligence”? It is challenging to distinguish the effects of technology adoption from unobserved productivity and demand shocks. We take a first look at the economic impacts of large custom software investment —“IT spikes”—using a novel methodology to obtain consistent estimates. Following these events, firm employment increases by about 7% and revenues by about 11%. Rather than displace labor, IT spikes increase revenues and markups, implying decreased labor share of output. Moreover, growth is greater for firms that use AI, IT-producing firms, newer firms, and those in the trade, service, …

The advantages of targeted therapy have motivated many efforts to find distinguishing features between the molecular cell surface landscapes of diseased and normal cells. Typically, the features have been proteins, lipids or carbohydrates, but other approaches are emerging. In this discussion, we examine the use of cell surface acidity as a feature that can be exploited by using pH-sensitive peptide folding to target agents to diseased cell surfaces or cytoplasms.

Change Management Over Financial Information: A Multi-Criteria Evaluation Of System Change Controls Using Desirability Functions, Angel R. Otero, Christian Sonnenberg, Ivonne Delgado-Perez

Communications of the IIMA

The increasing complexity of information technology, attacks on confidential information, and the passing of new laws and regulations have shifted the focus around internal controls in organizations. Particularly, general information technology controls related to change management (i.e., system change controls) are critical in ensuring the integrity, completeness, and reliability of financial information. The literature points to various evaluation methods for these controls to determine which ones to implement. However, these methods do not necessarily consider relevant organization constraints, preventing the inclusion of required controls or the exclusion of unnecessary controls. This paper proposes a novel approach, using Desirability Functions, for …

Acuity-Based Staffing: Improving Patient Outcomes And Staff Satisfaction, Natalie Long Apr 2020

Acuity-Based Staffing: Improving Patient Outcomes And Staff Satisfaction, Natalie Long

MSN Capstone Projects

Traditionally, nurse staffing practices have been based on a nurse-patient ratio model and have not incorporated patient acuity. More recent literature has shown that acuity-based staffing can improve patient outcomes and staff satisfaction. The Emergency Department (ED) is an area that has fluctuating patient acuity and volume. To incorporate acuity in to staffing in the ED, the acuity mix over the past year can be used to calculate required nursing hours, therefore providing the number of required nurses for that facility. The calculated number of staff can then be distributed over a 24 hour period. By incorporating acuity in to …

Usage Of Electronic Interactive Feedback Surveys To Increase Quality Maturity Score Among Public Health Agencies, Mackenzie Fritz, Holly Mondloch

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Effective involvement in the quality improvement process of an agency is essential. Employee lack of enthusiasm for quality improvement, coupled with limited access to resources for expressing concerns and new ideas, and lack of supervisor follow up produce an environment that inhibits quality improvement processes. This lack of quality improvement process stifles change within the agency. Increased quality improvement initiatives enhance the use of evidence-based processes and procedures and insure staff have input into organizational changes. A local public health agency identified quality improvement environment maturity levels as an area for growth. In response to their concern, a 14-question survey …

You Say You Want A Revolution: A Multiple Case Study Of Diversity And Inclusion Messages To Transform Engineering Culture, Stephanie Lezotte

Theses and Dissertations

Lack of diversity in engineering programs has drawn recent national attention (National Science Foundation, 2017). Scholars have suggested the normative engineering culture perpetuates the marginalization of students and faculty with excluded identities (Leydens & Lucena, 2017; Seymour & Hewitt, 1997; Walden, Trytten, Shehab, & Foor, 2018). This multiple case study examined three engineering units committed to creating an inclusive engineering culture that values social justice in order to redefine the "ideal" engineer. The overarching research question was: How do engineering diversity champions produce and circulate institutional messages about diversity and inclusion? Drawing from communications studies, cultural studies, and organizational theory, …
