Maternal Iron Homeostasis: Effect On Placental Development And Function, Hannah Roberts, Stephane L. Bourque, Stephen J. Renaud
Maternal Iron Homeostasis: Effect On Placental Development And Function, Hannah Roberts, Stephane L. Bourque, Stephen J. Renaud
Paediatrics Publications
Iron is an essential mineral that participates in oxygen transport, DNA synthesis and repair, and as a cofactor for various cellular processes. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. Due to blood volume expansion and demands from the fetal-placental unit, pregnant women are one of the populations most at risk of developing iron deficiency. Iron deficiency during pregnancy poses major health concerns for offspring, including intrauterine growth restriction and long-term health complications. Although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, maternal iron deficiency may indirectly impair fetal growth through changes in the structure and function of the placenta. Since the …

Recent Advances In Preventing Recurrent Stroke, J. David Spence
Department of Medicine Publications
Since a 2017 update, there have been important advances in stroke prevention. These include new evidence about nutrition, antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulation, lipid-lowering therapy, hypertension control, pioglitazone, and carotid endarterectomy and stenting. Evidence regarding toxic metabolites produced by the intestinal microbiome from egg yolk and red meat has important dietary implications, particularly for patients with impaired renal function, including the elderly. They should avoid egg yolk and red meat and limit the intake of animal flesh. Higher doses of folic acid may be needed for patients with the T allele of MTHFR, so it may not be sufficient to give vitamin …
Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
HMC Senior Theses
Diabetes continues to affect many lives every year, putting those affected by it at higher risk of serious health issues. Despite many efforts, there currently is no cure for diabetes. Nevertheless, researchers continue to study diabetes in hopes of understanding the disease and how it affects people, creating mathematical models to simulate the onset and progression of diabetes. Recent research by David J. Albers, Matthew E. Levine, Andrew Stuart, Lena Mamykina, Bruce Gluckman, and George Hripcsak1 has suggested that these models can be furthered through the use of Data Assimilation, a regression method that synchronizes a model with a …

Everyone needs to eat, and eat well, as it is essential to the process of slowing down the pace to and time of our death, the point of maximum entropy for each person. As a result, it is perhaps the best example of the need to seek one’s Self-interest. It also puts us in the position, however, to more easily Empathize, walk-in-the-shoes of someone who may not have enough food, or the best kind of food, and help in forming a shared Other-interest, too. As a result, we might choose to support, with our tax money, some kind of a …

This paper describes capacity development as a key aspect of community-based research with indigenous communities. University research engagement with indigenous communities includes extensive, and often negative, historical antecedents. We discuss strategies for developing effective, egalitarian, and balanced indigenous community-university relationships to build research capacity of these communities, and to create sustainable partnerships to improve health and wellness, and to reduce health disparities. We draw on the experience of eight investigators conducting research with indigenous communities to assess effective strategies for building and enhancing partnerships, including (1) supporting indigenous investigator development; (2) developing university policies and practices sensitive and responsive to …

Constipation In The Long-Term Care Resident, Georgiana Hogan, Janice Lazear, Jean Croce Hemphill, Catherine Hebert, Emily Wood
Appalachian Student Research Forum
An evidence-based clinical practice guideline was developed to prevent and manage constipation in the long-term care (LTC) resident. Constipation is a prevalent condition in the LTC resident. Guidelines do not address this vulnerable population. Constipation may result in poor nutritional status, quality of life along with increased health care costs and hospitalizations. A literature review was completed and evidence was evaluated and included into the initial draft recommendations. The guideline was reviewed for content validity using a Delphi Committee of clinical experts in gastroenterology, geriatrics, and pharmacy. The updated guidelines were presented to an interdisciplinary team of long-term care residents. …

Musculoskeletal State Estimation With Trajectory Optimization And Convolutional Neural Network, Jennifer Wisniewski
Musculoskeletal State Estimation With Trajectory Optimization And Convolutional Neural Network, Jennifer Wisniewski

Collegiate athletes rely on their muscles to compete in their respective sports. However, one injury requiring extended time out of competition could lead to muscle atrophy. As a result, athletes may learn to compensate for weakened muscle groups with stronger muscle groups; a change that may be almost undetectable. Consequently, compensating can add unnecessary stress to the musculoskeletal system, leading to reinjury. One way to combat this is by measuring muscle force. However, there are currently no methods to directly measure muscle force, so it must be solved for indirectly. This research aims to explore state estimation with trajectory optimization …
Determinants Of Holliday Junction Formation And Resolution During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Marina Bykova
Determinants Of Holliday Junction Formation And Resolution During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Marina Bykova
ETD Archive
In the process of meiosis, 4 haploid cells are produced from 1 diploid cell in two rounds of division. During prophase I of meiosis I, double strand breaks (DSBs) are created by the Spo11 protein, some of which are later repaired by homologous recombination into crossovers. During homologous recombination, structures called Holliday Junctions are formed, which later are resolved into crossovers to allow homologous chromosomes to separate. Ifthey are not resolved, the cell arrests and cannot progress further in meiosis. I have investigated three proteins known or suspected to be involved in Holliday Junction formation and resolution: the transcription factor …

Pecan Kernel Phenolics Content And Antioxidant Capacity Are Enhanced By Mechanical Pruning And Higher Fruit Position In The Tree Canopy, Yi Gong, Ronald B. Pegg, Adrian L. Kerrihard, Brad E. Lewis, Richard J. Heerema
Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works
Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is a tree nut native to North America. Although inhibited light exposure (most specifically as a result of overlapping tree canopies) has been shown to impair yield, the effect of this factor on nut antioxidant properties remains unknown. This study investigated effects of mechanical pruning and canopy height position of fruit on pecan kernel antioxidant contents and capacity. Beginning in 2006, trees in a ‘Western’ pecan orchard in New Mexico were subjected to three mechanical pruning frequency treatments (annual, biennial, and triennial) paralleling conventional practices, while other trees were maintained as unpruned controls. During the 2012 to …

No. 39: Urban Food Governance Perspectives In Changing African And Southern Cities, Gareth Haysom
Hungry Cities Partnership
The key urban food governance question in African and other Southern cities is understanding the role that appropriate infrastructures could play in delivering positive outcomes in the urban food system. This discussion paper looks at urban food governance needs in African cities and reflects on the governance actions required in order to respond to wider food system changes and challenges. It argues that food in the African city is a public good and discusses the role that a state (and city government) should play in enabling access. The paper finds that the normalization of food poverty, the absence of agency, …

No. 41: Migration And Food Security In Cities Of The Global South, Abel Chikanda, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera
Hungry Cities Partnership
South-South migration is an important, though poorly researched, component of the global migration regime. This discussion paper focuses on the movement of migrants from one country in the Global South to live and work in urban areas of another. While they move from one country to another for a variety of reasons and with variable outcomes, the vast majority of South-South migrants move to cities in countries of destination where employment and livelihood opportunities are greatest. The authors find that the data for generating an overall picture of the global distribution of South-South migrants in cities is patchy and dated …

Hungry Cities Partnership
Like many emerging economies in the Global South, China is experiencing major transformations of its national and local food system characterized by the rise of supermarkets. There has been an ongoing debate on the relationship between the supermarket and the wet market in developing countries. Drawing on data from a city-wide supermarket mapping and surveys conducted in Nanjing in 2019, this paper revisits China’s “supermarketization” process and challenges the prediction of supermarket domination. It reveals that Nanjing’s food retailing system has been shaped by the complementarity and co-evolution of the wet market and the supermarket with great policy support. It …
