Introduction: Timing of cord clamping and other cord management strategies may improve outcomes at preterm birth. However, it is unclear whether benefits apply to all preterm subgroups. Previous and current trials compare various policies, including time-based or physiology-based deferred cord clamping, and cord milking. Individual participant data (IPD) enable exploration of different strategies within subgroups. Network meta-analysis (NMA) enables comparison and ranking of all available interventions using a combination of direct and indirect comparisons.
Objectives: (1) To evaluate the effectiveness of cord management strategies for preterm infants on neonatal mortality and morbidity overall and for different participant characteristics using IPD …

Aging adults are the fastest-growing population in the United States, but they are underrepresented in health care research. Evidence-based decisions for aging adults need to be made using research done with this population. However, recruiting aging adults into research has many challenges. This article presents multiple cases of recruiting aging adults into nutrition research studies in 3 different US geographic locations. The challenges, successes, and lessons learned are presented. The lessons learned can provide guidance to others already doing research with aging adults and those clinical and community dietitians who want to start doing research with aging adults.

Communicating scientific results with community partners is often lacking in intervention programs, thus eB4CAST was developed to facilitate impact sharing. This article investigated using the eB4CAST dissemination tool to communicate impact from a campus-based obesity prevention program. Data from Get Fruved RCT university sites collected at baseline were used to generate eB4CAST reports. Experts (n = 13) and RCT sites (n = 15) were asked to provide feedback on eB4CAST reports based on appeal, understanding, and clarity. On all Likert items, participants rated above 7 on each (out of 10). Positive responses from open-ended questions included eB4CAST reports …

There is an urgent need to create effective interventions that help parents establish a healthy diet among their children early in life, especially among low-income and ethnically and racially diverse families. U.S. children eat too few fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and too many energy dense foods, dietary behaviors associated with increased morbidity from chronic diseases. Parents play a key role in shaping children's diets. Best practices suggest that parents should involve children in food preparation, and offer, encourage and model eating a variety of healthy foods. In addition, while parents help to shape food preferences, not all children respond …

Nys High School Graduation Rate Disproportionality, Kelly Linda Gilpin Clarke
Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative study examines the impact that social contextual factors, such as racial composition, segregation, socioeconomic status, and school factors, such as per-pupil expenditure, student-to-teacher ratio, and school size have on the White-Black and White-Hispanic high school graduation rates within New York State school districts. Theoretically, I frame my study using Nasir and Hand’s (2006) Sociocultural Theory Framework, which addresses the intersectionality of race, culture, and inherent learning biases that impact minoritized students educated in incompatible historical school structures.
The dissertation addresses several research questions, such as (1) What determines the variation of cohort graduation rates in NYS school districts; …
The Care Economy As Alternative Economy, Sandra Sullivan-Dunbar
The Care Economy As Alternative Economy, Sandra Sullivan-Dunbar
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay explores the care economy, defined as activity oriented toward sustaining life and promoting basic well-being, whether that activity is paid or unpaid. The essay finds parallels between Pope Benedict XI’s concerns about neoclassical economics as expressed in Caritas in Veritate and feminist scholarship addressing the care economy. Both Benedict and feminist economists challenge sharp binaries between the market and the state and affirm a spectrum of motives driving economic activity. Both Benedict and feminist economists critique an individualistic, voluntaristic anthropology of self-interest, and both understand true economic development to promote the holistic well-being of all persons. However, Benedict …

On July 2nd, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the first Morrill Act to establish colleges for educating the middle-class and the poor in the field of agriculture, military tactic, and mechanics without excluding the classical studies (Smith & Wilson, as cited in Comer et al., 2006; Thelin, 2011; Seals, 1998; Mayberry, 1991; National Archives & Record Administration [NARA], n.d.a; Neyland). Twenty-eight years later, Congress authorized the second Morrill Act, and eventually established 17 land-grant colleges for African Americans. Despite early efforts to improve access to education for Blacks, racial discrimination resulted in an unequal distribution of federal and state provisions …

This review is focused on the biogeochemistry of arsenic in freshwaters and, especially, on the key role that benthic microalgae and prokaryotic communities from biofilms play together in through speciation, distribution, and cycling. These microorganisms incorporate the dominant iAs (inorganic arsenic) form and may transform it to other arsenic forms through metabolic or detoxifying processes. These transformations have a big impact on the environmental behavior of arsenic because different chemical forms exhibit differences in mobility and toxicity. Moreover, exposure to toxicants may alter the physiology and structure of biofilms, leading to changes in ecosystem function and trophic relations. In this …
