Aging In Place: Causes And Importance Of Fall Prevention Education, Molly Banks, Danielle Halstead, Mariah Leroux
Aging In Place: Causes And Importance Of Fall Prevention Education, Molly Banks, Danielle Halstead, Mariah Leroux
Critically Appraised Topics
Falls are a significant concern for older community-dwelling adults’ ability to age in place, specifically those who aged 60 and older. Many factors contribute to the risk of falls in older adults that need to be addressed by health care facilities, home health providers, and caretakers. Occupational therapy has a role to educate older adults, as well as health care providers on how to prevent the risk factors of older adults and falls. The purpose of this CAT is to take a deeper look at why this population has so many falls and examine the research addressing education and risk …

Expanding Our Views Of Science Education To Address Sustainable Development, Empowerment, And Social Transformation, William Kyle
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
On 25 September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, which took effect 1 January 2016, totransform the world to better meet human needs and the requirements of economic transformation, whileprotecting the environment, ensuring peace and realizing human rights. Since 1987, there have been several globalinitiatives oriented toward sustainable development, yet science educators have often remained silent with respectto ensuring the goals of science education are linked intrinsically to the central tenets of sustainable development. Why such silence? Where are the voices of science educators? In this position statement, I offer a rationale for expanding our views of science education to …

Creating A Social Communication Module For Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Erin Walton
Creating A Social Communication Module For Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Erin Walton
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Research (Hales, Carroll, Fryar, & Ogden, 2017) shows that those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience poorer physical health and fewer opportunities for social interactions than typically developing peers. As the prevalence of ASD increases, it is essential to consider effective interventions that target multiple skill areas for individuals seeking therapy. Youth ages 9 to 17 with ASD may experience physical health and social communication benefits from the implementation of a social communication curriculum module that could potentially be incorporated with Bingocize®, an online application that incorporates bingo with physical exercise, as well as educational content. Social communication educational …

Import, Export, And Recycling Of Dissolved Nutrients In The Ogeechee River Estuary (Georgia, Usa), William B. Savidge, Kathryn R. Doyle, Brock Woodson
Import, Export, And Recycling Of Dissolved Nutrients In The Ogeechee River Estuary (Georgia, Usa), William B. Savidge, Kathryn R. Doyle, Brock Woodson
Journal of Marine Research
We constructed an empirical mass balance model of nutrient fluxes in the Ogeechee River estuary (Georgia, USA) from eight surveys of seasonal estuarine nutrient concentrations during 2015 and 2016. The model results indicated a net removal of dissolved phosphorus and a net production of dissolved nitrogen (N) within the estuary over an annual cycle. During summer and autumn low flow periods, much of the dissolved N discharged to the ocean seems to be recycled into the estuary in the form of phytoplankton biomass. As a result, the outwelled N is not new nitrogen fueling coastal production but is nitrogen trapped …

The Relationship Between Upstream Variables And Diabetes In Ohio, Brenna Lammers
The Relationship Between Upstream Variables And Diabetes In Ohio, Brenna Lammers
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Chronic illness is a significant contributor to disease burden in the US. Among these chronic conditions, diabetes is one of the most prevalent. Knowing the relationships between various factors and the prevalence of diabetes would be beneficial to creating targeted approaches to address this major public health problem. Therefore, the objective of this project was to elucidate the relationship between social determinants of health (unemployment, food environment index, and access to exercise opportunities) and access to care variables (ratio of population to primary care physicians and percent uninsured) with prevalence of diabetes by county in Ohio. This was done through …

When health policy experts noticed that health outcomes for African Americans were consistently worse than those of their White counterparts, many in the health care community assumed that the poor outcomes could be blamed on poverty and lifestyle choices. Subsequent research told a different story. Studies repeatedly showed that neither money, nor marriage, nor educational achievement protect African American men, women, or children from poor health. Instead, the disparities were more likely explained by racism. Specifically, multiple studies have shown that experiencing racism has been linked to increased infant and maternal mortality rates, elevated stress levels, and an increased risk …
Climate Change And Seed Security Among Smallholder Farmers In Northern Ghana, Michael Biwalib Madin
Climate Change And Seed Security Among Smallholder Farmers In Northern Ghana, Michael Biwalib Madin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Smallholder agriculture is highly susceptible to climate variability and change. According to recent projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, this sensitivity would likely increase in the coming decades, with more erratic rainfall, prolonged dry periods, shorter growing seasons, and seed germination failures. In the African context, the mechanisms through which these ecological stressors would affect seed security are poorly understood. Drawing upon a case study of semi-arid Ghana, this study examines climate change impacts on seed security among smallholder farmers. It adopts a mixed-methods approach with intensive fieldwork in two farming communities. Conceptually, the study uses a political …

Inviting Students Into The Kitchen: Inquiry-Based Learning As A Critical Thinking Instructional Strategy, Mandi Goodsett
Inviting Students Into The Kitchen: Inquiry-Based Learning As A Critical Thinking Instructional Strategy, Mandi Goodsett
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
This recipe was developed to teach first- or second-year students source evaluation using inquiry-based learning. The method could be modified for a variety of settings, including online. The purpose behind using inquiry-based learning is to develop students’ cognitive habits of questioning, so they are able to transfer the evaluation skills they learn in the library session to other contexts. The evaluation process is focused less on finding quick answers and more on developing meaningful, searching questions about sources that are found as evidence.

Length-Weight Relationships Of Invasive Mosquitofish(Gambusia Holbrooki Girard, 1859) In 23 River Basins Of Turkey, Irmak Kurtul, Hasan Musa Sari
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 has established very strong populations in freshwater resources in Turkey after being introduced into Amik Lake (Hatay/Antakya) at the beginning of the 1920s. In this study, it was aimed to determine the female:male ratios and length-weight relationships of G. holbrooki populations in Turkey, which are considered as a threat, especially for endemic species. G. holbrooki specimen were sampled at total of 66 locations, including 39 lentic and 27 lotic locations, between 2016 and 2017. The female:male ratio was 1:0.39 for all of the investigated localities. Length-weight relationships were investigated at 44 sampling locations for the females …

Should Advanced Maternal Age Be A Deterrent For Attempting A Pregnancy?, Sarina Spira
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
In the developed world, the trend toward women of advanced age bearing children is very prevalent and seems likely to continue. For a variety of reasons, women are delaying pregnancy until 35 years and older when they suddenly seem keenly aware that their biological clocks are ticking. A review of various studies obtained from the Proquest and EBSCO databases indicates that there are definitely certain risks associated with advanced maternal age (AMA). As females age, the reduced number and quality of their remaining eggs contribute to reduced fertility. Congenital anomalies involving the number of chromosomes in the embryo increases as …

Is Rapamycin An Effective Anti-Aging Drug?, Basya Aboud
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Scientific and pharmaceutical advancements have revolutionized medicine. Many once- debilitating or fatal diseases can now be managed with medication. However, the search for a cure for the inevitable aging diseased state remained futile until recently. Rapamycin has been studied for its possible longevity effects, providing promising results for the development of anti-aging therapies. This paper evaluates the benefits and risks of rapamycin use. While rapamycin cannot be supported as a safe anti-aging drug, rapamycin studies have elucidated parts of the aging pathway, providing a breakthrough for anti-aging research.

Stinky Water And Other Ills: Environmental Justice For Rural Services, Michael R. Daley
Stinky Water And Other Ills: Environmental Justice For Rural Services, Michael R. Daley
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Environmental justice concerns affect rural communities and the people who are members of them. Social workers’ long-standing involvement in improving living conditions of the people and communities with whom they work make environmental justice an important responsibility. Yet there is a rural-urban divide on topics related to the environment, and rural and urban communities tend to establish different environmental priorities. Rural communities tend to prioritize local conditions and solutions over global and societal ones. Rural people distrust national policies especially those established by governmental as not being responsive to their interest. Some common environmental rural problems are identified. Environmental justice …
