The Impact Of Childhood Adversities On Prison Misconduct: A Study Based On General Strain Theory, Ellen Brefo Agyei Nov 2025

The Impact Of Childhood Adversities On Prison Misconduct: A Study Based On General Strain Theory, Ellen Brefo Agyei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Drawing on General Strain Theory, this study examines how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) shape the choice of coping mechanisms of inmates within correctional settings. While prior research has explored prison misconduct, little research has looked at the relationship between ACEs, negative emotions, and prison misconduct. To address this gap, this study uses the nationally representative dataset, Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI) conducted in 2016, to explore how ACEs affect prison misconduct and whether negative emotions mediate this relationship. Findings from the regression analyses suggest that inmates who experienced more ACEs experienced higher levels of negative emotions and were more likely …

A Comprehensive Framework To Enhance Holistic Care For Postpartum Single Mothers, Stephanie Dumas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract Postpartum depression remains a significant challenge for single mothers who face emotional, financial, and social barriers with limited support. In Palm Beach County, Florida, where many households are led by single parents, existing services are often uncoordinated and lack trauma-informed approaches that address the realities of mothers during the postpartum period. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore the perceptions of human services professionals regarding the trauma-informed and holistic care interventions needed to support single mothers experiencing postpartum depression. The Garbhasanskar holistic care framework, which emphasizes emotional well-being, mindfulness, and the creation of safe and …

Introduction: Depressive symptoms are common in the growing geriatric surgical population and are associated with important patient-centred surgical outcomes, including postoperative delirium, discharge to postacute care facility and decline in functional status. Few interventions have been developed to address depressive symptoms in the perioperative setting.

Methods and analysis: We designed a feasibility and acceptability study of a nine-session problem-solving therapy (PST) telehealth perioperative intervention aimed at reducing postoperative functional decline and depressive symptoms among at-risk older adults undergoing major surgical procedures. Acceptability will be evaluated using a patient-centred five-question survey, assessing participant satisfaction and perceived usefulness of the perioperative intervention. …

Latching On: Equity In Breastfeeding Education, Tara Anderson Ba, Rn, Cbc Nov 2025

Latching On: Equity In Breastfeeding Education, Tara Anderson Ba, Rn, Cbc

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background

Breastmilk is the optimal source of nutrition for newborns (WHO, 2019). Prenatal breastfeeding education best prepares families, yet not all patients attend hospital-offered classes due to associated fees. This gap may negatively impact knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding rates (Kehinde et al., 2022). To promote health equity, it is critical to provide accessible prenatal education to all patients, regardless of their ability to attend traditional classes.

Purpose

Our hospital aims to ensure all patients make informed infant feeding decisions. This project sought to provide prenatal breastfeeding education in outpatient Labor and Delivery Triage and evaluate its impact on patient knowledge …

Patient Identification: Call Check Connect, Antoinette Fox Bsn, Rn, Nicole Calderon Bsn, Rn

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background: Lack of staff participation in verifying correct patient in conversations via phone or in-person has led to an increase in patient safety events within our site.

Local problem: While receiving telemetry monitoring, a patient experienced sustained bradycardia (slow heart rate). When the concern was initially escalated to the care team, there was confusion regarding which patient was experiencing the clinical decline. The lack of use of the high reliability tool read/repeat back and patient identifiers lead to a delay in escalation to the clinician and a clinical intervention delay. Ultimately leading to a major safety event.

Method: The safety …

Guardians Of The Skin: Preventing Pressure Injuries On A Stroke Unit, Chrissy Bass Msn, Rn, Cnl, Melanie Augello Msn, Rn, Ne-Bc, Medsurg-Bc

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Our nurses saw a rise in hospital-acquired pressure injuries in the stroke unit. NDNQI data showed we performed below the national mean in three out of four quarters. This project's aim was to identify gaps and create innovative solutions led by nurses, to reduce pressure injuries by 20%. Several factors contributed to the rise in pressure injuries, including length of stay, increase in acutely ill stroke patients due to bed designation, nutritional barriers, and mobility limitations. Post-covid, our unit experienced turnover, which resulted in new nurses being unaware of strategies used to prevent pressure injuries. Using the “5 Why” root …

Structural Determinants And The Ethics Of Health Inequity: Law, Poverty, And Prevention, Daniela Oehring Nov 2025

Structural Determinants And The Ethics Of Health Inequity: Law, Poverty, And Prevention, Daniela Oehring

School of Health Professions

Health inequity represents one of the most pressing ethical challenges of our time, manifesting as unfair and preventable differences in health outcomes that stem from broader social, economic, and structural conditions. This chapter examines the complex intersection of legal frameworks, philosophical theories, and jurisprudential interpretations that shape our understanding of health equity as both a public health imperative and a fundamental question of justice. Through a comprehensive analysis of international human rights law, declarations, and constitutional provisions, the chapter demonstrates how legal instruments have evolved to recognise health as a fundamental human right while establishing state obligations to address structural …

The Gut Microbiome As A Modulator Of Traumatic Brain Injury Pathology And Symptoms, Cole Vonder Haar, Marta Celorrio, Kris M Martens, Stuart H Friess, Sonia Villapol, Randal J Urban, Richard Pyles, Richelle Mychasiuk, Dennis Simon, Amanda Dave

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect millions annually, leading to devastating neurobehavioral consequences and increasing risk for neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. However, therapies are lacking. Starting in 2018, dysbiosis of the gut microbiome was identified as an acute, and potentially chronic, pathology originating from TBI. Recent studies established that the microbiome contributes to the evolution of TBI pathology and functional impairments. The gut microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that inhabit the stomach through colon and is indicated as a contributor to myriad neurological and psychiatric conditions. This makes it an intriguing target to understand in the context of TBI. Thus, …

INTRODUCTION: Posterior fossa crowding, due to cerebellar tonsil herniation, often requires surgery with posterior fossa decompression (PFD). Although most cases are due to a Chiari-1 malformation (CM1), some are due to concomitant congenital conditions, mimicking a radiological CM1. The aim of this study was to compare PFD outcomes between CM1 and the syndromic Chiari-like crowding of the posterior fossa. A national pediatric surgical database was used to compare baseline characteristics and short-term postoperative outcomes.

METHODS: Pediatric patients undergoing PFD (2012-2021) were identified in the ACS NSQIP-P database. Baseline characteristics and 30-day outcomes were compared between syndromic and non-syndromic cases. Multivariate …

Epigenetic Landscape In Lysosomal Storage Disorders: Mechanisms And Modulation, Andrés Felipe Leal, Harry Pachajoa, Shunji Tomatsu Nov 2025

Epigenetic Landscape In Lysosomal Storage Disorders: Mechanisms And Modulation, Andrés Felipe Leal, Harry Pachajoa, Shunji Tomatsu

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are rare substrate-accumulating diseases primarily characterized by mutations in genes encoding proteins involved in lysosomal function, most of which have enzymatic activity. Resulting lysosomal dysfunction leads to the overaccumulation of non- or partially degraded substrates. While it is true that enzyme deficiency is the primary cause of LSDs, the epigenetic alterations in DNA methylation, miRNA expression, and histone modifications appear to be critical mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of LSDs. As epigenetic marks are, in most cases, reversible, their study becomes vital to developing strategies aimed at reversing epigenome alterations. Although classical therapeutic alternatives aim to …
