Introduction
Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for developing cancer. Adenocarcinomas are the most commonly observed tumors of the gastrointestinal tract whereas data on gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in IBD patients is limited. GIST is a neoplasm that originates from the interstitial cells of Cajal in the smooth muscle layers of the gastrointestinal tract. [1] The association between GIST and Crohn’s disease (CD) is debated, as the tumor inconsistently present in areas of inflammatory activity. We report an interesting case of CD maintained on Infliximab, who presented with a flare that revealed GIST in the …

Introduction: Throughout life, proper nutrition is important to the brain as it affects cognition and intellectual development. Studies have shown that a lack of certain nutrients can affect the body’s ability to perform mentally and physically. Annually, 14% of children in the United States receive mental health illness diagnoses. However, the link between nutrition and mental health is not clear. The purpose of this systematic literature review on mental health and nutrition in adolescence is to identify any gaps that require future research efforts. Methods: The Elton Bryson Stephens Company ( EBSCO), ProQuest, and Journal Storage (JSTOR) databases were used …

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) has become increasingly widespread throughout various fields as an alternative method for efficiently phenotyping crops and plants at rates unparalleled by conventional means. With growing reliability, the convergence of NIR spectroscopy and modern machine learning represent a promising methodology offering unprecedented access to rapid, high throughput phenotyping at negligible costs, representing prospects that excite agronomists and plant physiologists alike. However, as is true of all emergent methodologies, progressive refinement towards optimization exposes potential flaws and raises questions, one of which is the cornerstone of this study. Spectroscopic determination of plant functional traits utilizes plants' morphological and …
Association Between Sports Participation And Levels Of Physical Fitness, Jordan Italiano
Association Between Sports Participation And Levels Of Physical Fitness, Jordan Italiano
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Objective: Physical activity is a major component of overall health, especially in children. Increased physical activity in children provides many health benefits, and organized sports provide a great opportunity to meet the physical activity recommendations. In fact, participation in organized sports provides further health advantages, such as lower BMIs, compared to those who engaged in self organized physical activity and has shown to promote continued healthy habits throughout life. However, there has not been research looking at which sports are associated with the greatest level of fitness and provide the greatest health benefit for participants. In this study, we examine …
Fertilization Value Of Biosolids On Nutrient Accumulation And Environmental Risks To Agricultural Plants, Hoi Yan Chow, Livia Min Pan
Fertilization Value Of Biosolids On Nutrient Accumulation And Environmental Risks To Agricultural Plants, Hoi Yan Chow, Livia Min Pan
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Amendment with treated biosolids can increase soil fertility and plant nutrition to the soil, but the fertilization value compared with other commercial soil amendments on the soil ecosystem is poorly understood. The effects of different proportions (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%) of thermal and pH-treated biosolid applications on the growth performance, nutrient contents, and toxicity performance of carrots (Daucus carota L.) and choy sum (Brassica chinensis var. parachinensis) were studied. Different commercial organic soil amendments, such as biochar, chicken manure (CM), and food waste compost (FWC), were also used as a comparison in the experiment to determine the feasibility of …

A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken
A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In 1848, the same year that Switzerland’s political structure
took on its present constitutional form as a modern nation-state, a Swiss
settler-entrepreneur named John Sutter became aware of gold deposits
at his mill in Alta California. This led directly to the California Gold
Rush. Two years later, in 1850, the United States accepted the freshly
acquired and promising region now known as “California” into the
Union as a state. Swiss immigrants enhanced the development of California
from its very inception.

Covid-19’S Effects On New York City’S Food System: Lessons For Public Health Responses, Nevin Cohen, Nicholas Freudenberg
Publications and Research
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food availability and affordability and changed the daily food practices of New Yorkers. Eleven surveys of samples of 1,000 New York City adults from March 13 through June 28 illustrate three effects on food access and food insecurity: (1) closing restaurants, schools, and other sources of prepared foods reduced access and changed shopping patterns, food expenditures, and diets; (2) economic disruption exacerbated food insecurity and increased demand for food assistance; and (3) altered food practices affected diets and health. These impacts were disproportionately borne by vulnerable populations. This paper reports survey responses illustrating the effects of …

For Food Space: Theorizing Alternative Food Networks Beyond Alterity, Renata Blumberg, Helga Leitner, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux
Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works
In response to calls by scholars to deepen theoretical engagement in research on Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), in this article we critically discuss and assess major theoretical approaches deployed in the study of AFNs. After highlighting the strengths and limitations of each theoretical approach, we provide an alternative framework – which we refer to as the Geographical Political Ecology of Food Systems – that integrates the contributions that have emerged in the study of the alternative geographies of food with an understanding of capitalist processes in the food system. We do this by bringing together literature on the political ecology …

Hunger Regulation Before And After A Bout Of Exercise, Lindsay Spitaletto
2020 Honors Symposium
INTRODUCTION
• Obesity is an epidemic in the United States (Kim, et. al., 2016).
• Research suggests exercise aids in preventing risk factors that lead to obesity (Cercato, Fonseca, 2019 and Blundell, et. al., 2015).
• Exercise affects appetite regulation, but few studies have explored the effect of exercise on energy intake (Schoeller, et. Al, 1997).
OBJECTIVES
•Compare appetite level changes pre-and post-exercise bout using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS)
•Compare energy intake (food consumption) pre-and post-exercise bout using two 24hour food recalls

Iron In Urban Air Pollution, Joseph R. Salazar
Iron In Urban Air Pollution, Joseph R. Salazar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The processes by which iron is solubilized are largely unknown. There are three hypotheses on how iron is soluble: 1) iron is thought to undergo an acid based solubilization process, 2) iron undergoes an oxidation/reduction process and reduces iron(III) to the more soluble iron(II), and 3) iron is bound to organic molecules, which solubilizes it. The 3 hypotheses on iron water-solubilized are explored by presenting two individual studies.
The first study investigates iron directly from car exhaust. Exhaust particles were collected from 32 vehicles. Iron solubility in these samples ranged from 0%-82% with the average iron solubility being 30%. X-ray …
The Eu Ets: A Critical Analysis, Marceline Grey Swan
The Eu Ets: A Critical Analysis, Marceline Grey Swan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Carbon markets, established via cap & trade programs, are the dominant means by which climate stabilization is currently being pursued worldwide, with many centered around the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme. As such, a critical analysis of the EU ETS & its effectiveness is crucial to assess whether the EU carbon market is an effective mechanism to achieve climate stabilization. The effectiveness of the overall program was evaluated via a determination of whether the EU ETS, & to a greater extent the EU carbon market, has allowed for emissions reductions in line with the goal for climate stabilization set by …

Poverty In The United States: An Analysis Of Its Measurement And The Long-Term Social And Economic Costs, Abby Magnus
Poverty In The United States: An Analysis Of Its Measurement And The Long-Term Social And Economic Costs, Abby Magnus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the role of poverty in the United States and how it has impacted social and economic systems. It explores how U.S. poverty measurements developed in the 1960s may not be accurately measuring poverty now, and the ways in which these measures could be improved upon. This work also reviews literature on health and educational inequities stemming from socioeconomic class, and the role these play in long-term economic mobility. Finally, it analyzes how larger social institutions like mass incarceration and capitalism have developed around poverty, and the role they play in maintaining its prevalence today. This thesis finds …
Prometheus' Gift Of Fire And Technics: Contemplating The Meaning Of Fire, Affect, And Californian Pyrophytes In The Pyrocene, Marjolein Oele
Prometheus' Gift Of Fire And Technics: Contemplating The Meaning Of Fire, Affect, And Californian Pyrophytes In The Pyrocene, Marjolein Oele
Philosophy
This chapter offers a philosophical response to the devastating and deadly wildfires that have been ravaging in California in the past few years; it turns to the myth of Prometheus (as interpreted through Bernard Stiegler’s Technics and Time) for theoretical guidance. The chapter’s central argument is that the Promethean duplicitous gift—of fire and technical skills (technē)—to humanity has both led to the current tragedy of the anthropocene and may offer impetus to imagine a future beyond the anthropocene, but only if fire and technical skills come to be seen in a different light, and solicit different affects. To reimagine our …

Attractiveness Of Carbon Removal Technologies For Consumers In Germany And The Usa, Dominik Rüdiger Daniel Brysch
Open Access Master's Theses
In recent times, millions of people realized the urgency to act against the threat of climate change through protests around the world. Achieving the goal of carbon neutrality as defined in the Paris climate agreement while the world population is growing and consumption is increasing with rising wealth, will only be possible with the large-scale implementation of carbon removal technologies. Thus, carbon removal will not only become an important issue for governments, but also for manufacturing companies and private consumers.
The aim is to identify possible carbon removal technologies, compare them with each other and highlight the respective advantages and …
