Communicating scientific results with community partners is often lacking in intervention programs, thus eB4CAST was developed to facilitate impact sharing. This article investigated using the eB4CAST dissemination tool to communicate impact from a campus-based obesity prevention program. Data from Get Fruved RCT university sites collected at baseline were used to generate eB4CAST reports. Experts (n = 13) and RCT sites (n = 15) were asked to provide feedback on eB4CAST reports based on appeal, understanding, and clarity. On all Likert items, participants rated above 7 on each (out of 10). Positive responses from open-ended questions included eB4CAST reports being clear, …

Using Simulation To Improve Skills, Confidence, And Satisfaction Related To Diabetes Education, Greshin M. Markwell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Diabetes mellitus is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. and affects 30.3 million people (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019). Research suggests that patients often have a limited knowledge and insight into self-management of diabetes mellitus (DM). Acceptance of the disease, insufficient knowledge, and noncompliance are the examples of key factors that affect the progress of the disease. Nurses play a key role in the delivery of diabetes education which can improve compliance. Simulation can be used to improve the nursing skill sets for diabetes education. The purpose of this project was to implement evidence-based …
Minimizing Antipsychotic Medication Side Effects In Adults Diagnosed With Mental Illness Through Psychoeducation: An Evidence-Based Approach, Sarah A. Yao
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Adherence to antipsychotic medication has demonstrated significant impact in decreasing symptom exacerbation among patients diagnosed with mental illness. Antipsychotic medications have several benefits including the management of psychotic and mood disorders; however, they could cause unwanted medication side effects with metabolic and cardiovascular risks. This issue is one of the commonly linked side effects resulting in nonadherence among mentally ill patients. The purpose of this project was to implement a psychoeducational intervention using the SIMPLE program to address metabolic and cardiovascular risks associated with antipsychotic medications among adult patients diagnosed with mental illness. A sample size of sixteen adult patients …

An Exploration Of Financial Management Programming For Residents In One Homeless Shelter: A Qualitative Institutional Case Study, Amy M. Heiser
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
Introduction: Homelessness affects the economy, societies, and individuals’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Occupational therapy is a holistic profession that works with all populations across the lifespan. Financial management is a life skill that many Americans struggle with. Evidence on financial management skill development within homeless shelters and occupational therapy is sparse. Occupational justice is a theoretical framework that supports the right for residents in a homeless shelter to have direct interventions toward skill development, such as education in financial management. Methods: This institutional case study explored a homeless shelter to gain knowledge of real-life program phenomena, with focus on …

The Effect Of Proton Pump Inhibitors On Normal Gastrointestinal Flora Leading To Weight Change, Emi L. Binstock
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
The goal of this literature review was to determine what effects proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have on the normal gastrointestinal (GI) flora and how that may lead to weight loss or weight gain. A literature search was performed using the database PubMed. Only articles from the last ten years (2009-2019) were included in this review. Keywords used in the search are listed below. After exclusion criteria was applied, 30 articles were relevant and used in this review. Five themes were identified in the literature review. An investigation of normal GI flora associated with weight loss and weight gain identified a …

Genes that establish the circadian clock have differential expression with respect to solar time in central and peripheral tissues. Here, we find circadian-time-induced differential expression in a large number of genes not associated with circadian rhythms in two brain regions lacking overt circadian function: the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) and the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA). These regions primarily engage in autonomic, homeostatic, and emotional regulation. However, we find striking diurnal shifts in gene expression in these regions of male Sprague Dawley rats with no obvious patterns that could be attributed to function or region. These findings have implications …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Background: Computational modeling is an increasingly common practice for disciplinary experts and therefore necessitates integration into science curricula. Computational models afford an opportunity for students to investigate the dynamics of biological systems, but there is significant gap in our knowledge of how these activities impact student knowledge of the structures, relationships, and dynamics of the system. We investigated how a computational modeling activity affected introductory biology students’ mental models of a prokaryotic gene regulatory system (lac operon) by analyzing conceptual models created before and after the activity.
Results: Students’ pre-lesson conceptual models consisted of provided, system-general structures (e.g., activator, repressor) …

Welcome to our annual Mathematics Department Newsletter. This was an unusual year for our department as the coronavirus cut short our time on campus this year. Hence we were unable to have our usual events such as the Annual Mathematics Lecture, the Pi Mu Epsilon Induction and Awards Night, and there was no in-person commencement ceremony. But despite that, many great things happened in our department.

Immigrants And Interdependence: How The Covid-19 Pandemic Exposes The Folly Of The New Public Charge Rule, Medha D. Makhlouf, Jasmine Sandhu
Faculty Scholarly Works
On February 24, 2020, just as the Trump administration began taking significant action to prepare for an outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States, it also began implementing its new public charge rule. Public charge is an immigration law that restricts the admission of certain noncitizens based on the likelihood that they will become dependent on the government for support. The major effect of the new rule is to chill noncitizens from enrolling in public benefits, including Medicaid, out of fear of negative immigration consequences. These chilling effects have persisted during the pandemic. When noncitizens are afraid to (1) seek …

Does Providing Scientific Information Affect Climate Change And Gmo Policy Preferences Of The Mass Public? Insights From Survey Experiments In Germany And The United States, Emily Diamond, Thomas Bernauer, Frederick Mayer
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
The use of information provision has been criticized as an ineffective way to increase support for evidence-based environmental policies, but it remains a dominant strategy among policy communicators. Using a survey experiment on climate change and genetically modified food (GMO) policy preferences in Germany and the United States (N = 3,000 total), we investigate how information provision shapes environmental policy attitudes and whether this effect is moderated by trust in science and trust in the source of messages. Findings show that information provision significantly shifted policy preferences towards the prevailing scientific opinion, but primarily among individuals whose prior attitudes conflicted …

No. 42: The Role Of Infrastructure Access In Urban Household Vulnerability To Food Insecurity In Southern Cities, Cameron Mccordic, Bruce Frayne, James Sgro
Hungry Cities Partnership
The geographical concentration of poverty in informal neighbourhoods across cities is a common socioeconomic feature of the urban form. Many of these impoverished areas also suffer from limited access to urban infrastructure. Given the expense and planning necessary to develop urban infrastructure, these areas are socially vulnerable in part because of their exclusion from urban master plans. This vulnerability is made more severe by the knock-on impacts of limited infrastructure access on other aspects of human insecurity. This paper uses HCP data to assess the predictive relationship between household infrastructure access and food insecurity across five case-study cities (Mexico City, …

No. 38: Reconceptualizing Informal Economic Governance: Implications From Cape Town, South Africa, Graeme Young
Hungry Cities Partnership
As awareness of the centrality of informality in urban development processes in the Global South is slowly incorporated into the international development agenda, a full understanding of the myriad ways in which informal economic activity is governed has become increasingly urgent. This discussion paper seeks to address this need through an analysis of informal economic governance in Cape Town, South Africa. It first outlines a general theoretical framework for understanding the governance of informal economies that focuses on the logics that inform governance, the systems in which governance take place, the modes in which governance operates, and the forms that …

An Investigation On The Cover Preference Of The Mountain Madtom (Noturus Eleutherus), Mariah Slaughter
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Madtom catfish, members of the genus Noturus, are common in the waters of the Southeastern US. A previous study observed that madtoms in the Green River, Kentucky, preferred to shelter within old mussel shells compared to under or next to rocks. A laboratory study on the Carolina Madtom (Noturus furiosus), found that they did not utilize mussel shells and preferred rocks as cover. I conducted a similar laboratory study to determine which cover options the Mountain Madtoms (Noturus eleutherus) prefer. Cover preference was determined by offering the madtoms shelter options (rocks or mussel shells) in …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
An e-portfolio has been recognized as a High Impact Practice (HIP). High Impact Practices are defined as “educational experiences that are meaningful, require student action and participation, and contribute to the life-long learning of the student.” (AACU, 2019, ¶2). Preliminary research has revealed that students that engage in HIPs are more likely to achieve higher grades, more readily retain and transfer information, and may narrow equity gaps (Kuh, Gambino, Ludvik, & O’Donnell, 2008). An e-portfolio is an interactive personal digital archive that may contain artifacts (such as resumes, curricula vitae, personal statements, etc.) or examples of achievements (such as projects, …

Assessing The Impact Of Mother’S Perception Of Support On Breastfeeding Intensity Through Six Months, Kathryn Doyle Palomares
Assessing The Impact Of Mother’S Perception Of Support On Breastfeeding Intensity Through Six Months, Kathryn Doyle Palomares
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Expert recommendations instruct mothers to exclusively breastfeed for infant’s first 6 months of life. While many mothers intend to breastfeed, mothers frequently cite early breastfeeding difficulties as a leading cause of breastfeeding cessation. The large discrepancy between a mother’s intentions for exclusive breastfeeding and the actual rates warrants further investigation. OBJECTIVES: The current research study utilized data from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II to (1) to understand how the mother’s perception of breastfeeding support in the presence of breastfeeding difficulties affects breastfeeding intensity. METHODS: Multinomial logistic regression utilizing data from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II. At each …

Objective: Many veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars have experienced traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although prior work has examined associations between TBI and development of psychi- atric syndromes, less is known about associations between TBI and component emotions constituting these syndromes, especially in the long term. The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term emotional consequences of deployment-related TBI.
Methods: As part of VA Cooperative Studies Program #566, we assessed a sample of n1⁄4456US Army soldiers prior to an index deployment to Iraq, and again an average of 8.3 years (SD1⁄42.4years) after their deployment for a long-term …
Evolutionary Origins, Regulation, And Function Of Carotenoid Biosynthesis In The Marine Heterotrophic Eukaryote, Aurantiochytrium Limacinum, Mariana Rius
SoMAS Research Data
Thraustochytrids are abundant and ubiquitous marine protists that are important in global elemental cycling and in supporting oceanic food webs through de novo omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid production. Thraustochytrids are also one of few heterotrophic eukaryotes with the capacity to synthesize carotenoids, a class of antioxidative pigments made up of carotenes (e.g., β-carotene) and xanthophylls (e.g., astaxanthin). Heterotrophic production of carotenoids is typically associated with protection against oxidative stress, yet the eco-physiological role and evolutionary origin of thraustochytrid carotenoid production remain elusive. A. limacinum encodes the first three carotenoid biosynthesis-specific enzymes (phytoene synthase, phytoene desaturase, and lycopene cyclase) in a …
