Beyond The Plot: Learning Through Fiction, Anne Kluthe

Honors Program: Expanded Learning Clubs

Encourage learning about complex, confusing, or even just random topics that were covered in fictional stories. Later on, shift the narrative from "discover new topics from what we are reading" to "what is the author trying to say here? What was their intent? What clues is the author giving us, and what do you think will happen next in the story?". This brings elementary schoolers a first interaction with deeper English themes, such as author's intent, at a low-stakes interaction to build confidence in the works and in themselves.

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Strategies aiming to promote weight loss usually include anything that results in an increase in energy expenditure (exercise) or a decrease in energy intake (diet). However, the probability of losing weight is low and the probability of sustained weight loss is even lower. Herein, we bring some questions and suggestions about the topic, with a focus on exercise interventions. Based on the current evidence, we should look at how metabolism changes in response to interventions instead of counting calories, so we can choose more efficient models that can account for the …

Social Issues In San Francisco: Perspectives From Global Buddhisms, John K. Nelson Apr 2020

Social Issues In San Francisco: Perspectives From Global Buddhisms, John K. Nelson

Theology & Religious Studies

A project of the students in the course "Buddhist Paths in Asia and North America", this wonderfully insightful collection of course papers combines research into San Francisco's urban problems with perspectives from Buddhist Studies.

The class was divided into twelve writing teams who then chose topics from a grid of ideas, firstcome- first-served. If one looks at the topics in this essay coming from Buddhist studies, you'll quickly see they are fairly fundamental and are found in almost any introductory course. What makes them special and relevant to our moment is in their creative application to the social problems and …

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Little is known about how songbirds modulate sleep during migratory periods. Due to the alternation of nocturnal endurance flights and diurnal refueling stopovers, sleep is likely to be a major constraint for many migratory passerine species. Sleep may help to increase the endogenous antioxidant capacity that counteracts free radicals produced during endurance flight and reduces energy expenditure. Here, we investigated the relationship between sleep behavior, food intake, and two markers of physiological condition—the amount of energy reserves and oxidative status—in two migratory songbird species, the garden warbler (Sylvia borin) and the whitethroat (Sylvia communis). In garden warblers, birds with high …

Seasonal Migration And Feminization Of Farm Management: Evidence From India, S Chandrasekhar, Soham Sahoo, Hema Swaminathan Apr 2020

Seasonal Migration And Feminization Of Farm Management: Evidence From India, S Chandrasekhar, Soham Sahoo, Hema Swaminathan

Working Papers

Using gender-disaggregated data on land operations from India, this paper contributes to the literature on agricultural feminization by showing a relationship between seasonal or short-term migration for work and feminization of farm management. Using a nationally representative data-set covering 35,604 rural Indian households in 2013, we identify if women are taking on the role of farm managers in households with short-term migrants. Our results show that women are less likely than men to be decision makers on farms, but this dynamic changes when there is short-term migration in the household; the probability of women being decision makers on farms increases. …

Improving Sustainability Using Cover Crop Grazing To Improve Soil Health And Fertility While Increasing Grain And Livestock Production, Kylie Paige Ewing Apr 2020

Improving Sustainability Using Cover Crop Grazing To Improve Soil Health And Fertility While Increasing Grain And Livestock Production, Kylie Paige Ewing

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Cover crops have become an increasingly popular option for alleviating agronomic and environmental concerns, such as erosion. Dual utilization can increase forage use efficiency and increase immediate economic return but understanding the impact on soil health and grain production may affect viability of this strategy. In a two year study conducted in Bowling Green, Kentucky, soil health was analyzed comparing three treatments: grazed wheat (Triticum aestivum; WGR) to un-grazed wheat (W) and grazed tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea; TF). Sixteen cow calf pairs were randomly allocated to grazed wheat or tall fescue for two weeks. Soil samples were analyzed following grazing …

Factors Influencing Both Maternal And Infant Body Composition At Two Years Postpartum, Samantha Henry

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Maternal body composition (BC) and physical activity (PA) level during pregnancy both contribute to infant body composition; however, few studies follow children beyond the early weeks to determine the longer-term implications of maternal lifestyle on offspring health. The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) Determine the role of maternal obesity on offspring BC at 2 years of age; 2) Determine the role of PA during pregnancy on maternal and infant BC at two years postpartum; and 3) Determine whether BC at birth (assessed via air displacement plethysmography [PEA POD]) is related to BC at two years of age (assessed …

Modular Network Governance: A Conceptual Framework For Addressing Complex Social Problems, Srivardhini K Jha, E Richard Gold, Laurette Dubã© Apr 2020

Modular Network Governance: A Conceptual Framework For Addressing Complex Social Problems, Srivardhini K Jha, E Richard Gold, Laurette Dubã©

Working Papers

We develop a conceptual governance framework to guide the creation and management of a modular network to address complex social problems. Drawing on theoretical foundations in modularity and inter-organizational networks, we propose that modularization of complex social problems is a dialectic, emergent process that blends a convener-led network formation with consultative problem definition and solution design. We also posit that social systems are imperfectly modular and need purposefully designed interface governance to integrate the modules. Finally, we advance how modularity may be leveraged to simultaneously advance the interests of participating actors and deliver societal value. The propositions together advance a …

Iron Deficiency In Infancy And Its Impact On Motor And Mental Development, Emma Baker

Undergraduate Research Conference

Iron plays a large role in nerve myelination, dopamine neurotransmission, and neuronal metabolism. The purpose of this literary review was to investigate the connection between iron deficiency and motor and cognitive development. Iron-deficiency is the most prevalent nutrient deficiency world-wide, and infants are at a greater risk due to their rapid growth. Due to the higher risk, this review focuses on iron deficiency in infancy.

Background: Sarcopenia, the unintentional loss of skeletal muscle mass, is associated with poor outcomes in adult patient populations. In adults, sarcopenia is often ascertained by cross-sectional imaging of the psoas muscle area (PMA). Although children with chronic medical illnesses may be at increased risk for muscle loss because of nutritional deficiencies, physical deconditioning, endocrine anomalies, and systemic inflammation, consistent quantitative definitions for sarcopenia in children are lacking. We aimed to generate paediatric reference values for PMA at two intervertebral lumbar levels, L3–4 and L4–5. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analysed abdominal computed tomography scans of consecutive children presenting to …

Can Protozoa Prove The Beginning Of The World?, Karina L. Burton Apr 2020

Can Protozoa Prove The Beginning Of The World?, Karina L. Burton

Classical Conversations

Protozoa are magnificent creatures. They exhibit all of the functions intrinsic to living organisms: irritability, metabolism, growth and reproduction. Within these functions, there are numerous examples of mutations that occur in order for organisms to adapt to their given environments. Irritability is demonstrated in protozoa by their use of pseudopodia, flagella, or cilia for motility; it has been shown that such locomotors exhibit diversity while maintaining similar protein and chemical structures that appear to be a result of evolutionary processes. Metabolism in protozoa is similar to that of larger animals, but their diet is unique. They primarily feast upon bacteria, …

Expression Profiling And Mutant Analysis Reveal Complex Regulatory Networks Involved In Arabidopsis Response To Biotic, Abiotic And Hormonal Stresses, Arjun Sham Valiyaveettil Shamgopal Apr 2020

Expression Profiling And Mutant Analysis Reveal Complex Regulatory Networks Involved In Arabidopsis Response To Biotic, Abiotic And Hormonal Stresses, Arjun Sham Valiyaveettil Shamgopal

Biology Dissertations

Biotic and abiotic stress factors consistently threat during different stages of the plant’s life cycle. A complex network of signaling molecules is required to overcome stresses, which is linked to general physiological and molecular processes. Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic fungal pathogen that causes grey mold disease on many crops. Apart from B. cinerea, several biotic, abiotic and hormonal stresses have detrimental effects on plant growth and productivity. The aim of this study is to identify the genetic regulations of individual stress types using comparative microarray analyses, and to find out the role of differentially expressed genes in Arabidopsis- …
