Objectives: The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of DSME paired with BCSP-MT in adult type 2 diabetes patients to improve diabetes knowledge, self-care practices, and diabetes control in a primary care setting.
Methods: In this quality improvement project, a 3-months, one-arm, pre-post pilot study was conducted in a clinic, the Northeastern U.S. A convenient sample of 14 people with …
Seeing Health: Examining The Association Between Hispanic Caribbean Restaurant Characteristics And Healthy Menu Images In New York City, Eddie N. Sakowitz
Seeing Health: Examining The Association Between Hispanic Caribbean Restaurant Characteristics And Healthy Menu Images In New York City, Eddie N. Sakowitz
Student Theses
Hispanics experience more diet-related health disparities in comparison to non-Hispanic whites. Community nutrition environments can influence health outcomes, but restaurants are a largely untapped research area. This study examined how Hispanic Caribbean restaurants promote healthy eating through menu design, and which Hispanic Caribbean restaurants characteristics are associated with healthy menu images. We hypothesize that healthy menu images will be associated with more affluent neighborhoods. We examined the nutrition environment in a random sample of 89 Hispanic Caribbean restaurants in New York City. This analysis included a subsample of Hispanic Caribbean restaurants that had menus with images (n=51). Hispanic Caribbean restaurants …
Teaming Together To Care For Our Deaf Patients: Insights From The Deaf Health Clinic, Kate Panzer, Junghyun Park, Leslie Pertz, Michael M. Mckee
Teaming Together To Care For Our Deaf Patients: Insights From The Deaf Health Clinic, Kate Panzer, Junghyun Park, Leslie Pertz, Michael M. Mckee
JADARA
Deaf patients often struggle with accessing culturally competent care. Poor communication and inaccessible health information negatively impact Deaf individuals, resulting in poorer health outcomes and inappropriate health care use. To address this problem, the Family Medicine Department established the Deaf Health Clinic in 2015 through the efforts of healthcare providers fluent in American Sign Language. After that, the clinic faced several management issues, and implemented strategies to address them. The paper discusses lessons learned and suggests potential and tested solutions to reduce gaps in health care for Deaf individuals.

Throughout Long Island’s educational structure, STEM educational institutions have responded to the latest information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics who into our new year, have emphasized the fastest growing occupational categories over the next 10 years. These careers will be in the energy, health and education sectors, with the medical and technical sectors containing the highest paying occupations. Yet, hidden in the projected demand which will continue to spur on millions of new jobs, is corporate leaderships continuous claim that they cannot find qualified workers. This “skills gap” is due to a lack of strong cognitive and socio-economic skills. …

Cerebral edema, in a variety of circumstances, may be accompanied by states of hyponatremia. The threat of brain injury from hypotonic stress-induced astrocyte demyelination is more common when vulnerable patients with hyponatremia who have end stage liver disease, traumatic brain injury, heart failure, or other conditions undergo overly rapid correction of hyponatremia. These scenarios, in the context of declining urinary output from CKD and/or AKI, may require controlled elevations of plasma tonicity vis-à-vis increases of the plasma sodium concentration. We offer a strategic solution to this problem via sodium-based osmotherapy applied through a conventional continuous RRT modality: predilution continuous venovenous …

Background: More than half portion of the brain is formed by lipids. They play critical roles in maintaining the brain’s structural and functional components. Any dysregulation in these brain lipids can lead to cognitive dysfunction which are associated with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, vascular dementia etc. Studies have linked lipids with cognitive impairment. But not much has been studied about the complex brain lipids which might play a pivotal role in cognitive impairment. This review aims to highlight the lipidomic profiles in patients with cognitive dysfunction. Results: Forty-five articles were reviewed. These studies show alterations …
Empowering Persons With Disabilities: Socio-Economic Rights As A Pathway To Personal Autonomy And Independence, Francesco Seatzu
Empowering Persons With Disabilities: Socio-Economic Rights As A Pathway To Personal Autonomy And Independence, Francesco Seatzu
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
Recent years have witnessed a growing awareness of the importance of the status of persons with disabilities as right-holders, and increasing linkages being made between human rights and persons with disabilities’ vulnerabilities in the development context. Stimulated by mounting concerns about the impact of the financial crisis of 2007–2008 on persons with disabilities, these changes have unsurprisingly catalyzed attention on those rights of persons with disabilities that are most closely connected to ensuring persons with disabilities’ development needs—namely their social and economic rights. Focusing on the content of, and duties imposed by, persons with disabilities’ socio-economic rights, this article starts …
Is Vaping Related To Other Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents?, Alvina Emran
Is Vaping Related To Other Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents?, Alvina Emran
Senior Theses
Vaping (smoking a vaporized liquid with an active ingredient) has had an upward trend in high school populations (ages 13-18) within the last decade, mainly due to misinformation and targeting from companies that sell e-cigarettes (142, 7). The most common substances that are vaped in teens are nicotine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the active ingredient in marijuana) (147). Nicotine and THC bind to NAchR and CB1 receptors that affect certain parts of the dopamine reward pathway, such as the prefrontal cortex, the ventral tegmental area, and the ventral striatum in the brain (44,106). Dysfunction within these pathways have been associated with …

Can Doing Good Reduce Risk? Corporate Social Responsibility And Risk For Firms In Controversial Industries, Emily Iehl
Can Doing Good Reduce Risk? Corporate Social Responsibility And Risk For Firms In Controversial Industries, Emily Iehl
Major Themes in Economics
A firm’s main goal is to add firm value. There are many ways to do this: increase sales, advertise, change management, and, possibly, doing good for the environment, employees, and others. The latter approach is often called corporate social responsibility. This paper tests to see if corporate social responsibility will reduce risk for a firm. There are two hypotheses created by Jo and Na (2012): the risk reduction hypothesis and the window-dressing hypothesis. Jo and Na conclude that corporate social responsibility in controversial firms can help reduce firm risk. However, my results do not show that.

Preterm Babies Risk For Malnutrition, Shannon Lyons, Molly Mancini
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Babies born prematurely can experience a variety of health issues. Preterm babies can develop “breathing problems, developmental delays, and vision problems” (“Preterm Birth”, 2019). On top of these issues, babies can also experience feeding difficulties. The purpose of this research study was to explore the effects of being preterm has on the ability to feed and risk of developing malnutrition compared to full-term babies. We will observe various studies on this, along with our own clinical experiences.
Decreasing Rates Of Obesity In Onondaga County Among Older Adults, Julianna Duca
Decreasing Rates Of Obesity In Onondaga County Among Older Adults, Julianna Duca
Transformations: Research Papers
After an investigation of the health priorities in Onondaga County, research concludes that the mortality rates are generally higher when compared to New York State (New York State Department of Health, 2018). Currently, obesity and being overweight are the second leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States (New York State Department of Health, 2019e). Obesity is one chronic disease that shows higher rates in Onondaga County than New York State and the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019; New York State Department of Health, 2016b). The rate of obesity in Onondaga County is 32%, the …
Toxicity Of Novel Platinum Compounds In Mammalian Cancer Cells, Vanesa Veletanlic
Toxicity Of Novel Platinum Compounds In Mammalian Cancer Cells, Vanesa Veletanlic
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There are currently three FDA platinum compounds approved for use as chemotherapeutics, where each drug has variable efficacies for different cancer types depending on cancer’s tissue of origin. The approved compounds are platinum(II) complexes with four coordination sites on the platinum atom allowing two types of ligands to attach: leaving ligands, which are removed from the platinum atom in solution, and non-leaving ligands, which remain complexed to the platinum. Carboplatin, the preferred compound used to treat ovarian and small-cell lung cancers, has a characteristic cyclobutanedicarboxylic acid leaving ligand and two ammonia non-leaving ligands. A novel compound, 1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylato(ethylenediamine)platinum (II), or Pt(en)CBDCA, …
A Global Perspective On Sustainable Intensification Research, Kenneth Cassman, Patricio Grassini
A Global Perspective On Sustainable Intensification Research, Kenneth Cassman, Patricio Grassini
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Despite general agreement that meeting food demand without further loss of natural ecosystems requires sustainable intensification, there is little dialogue about the research agenda needed to achieve it. To that end, we evaluate current trajectories towards sustainable intensification, review published research on the topic, identify missing links, and propose a prioritization framework to fill gaps. Although progress towards sustainable intensification is behind schedule, we are optimistic that current trends can get back on course assuming a well-prioritized and adequately funded research portfolio and appropriate policies and institutions to support it.

Why We Fear Genetic Informants: Using Genetic Genealogy To Catch Serial Killers, Teneille R. Brown
Why We Fear Genetic Informants: Using Genetic Genealogy To Catch Serial Killers, Teneille R. Brown
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Consumer genetics has exploded, driven by the second-most popular hobby in the United States: genealogy. This hobby has been co-opted by law enforcement to solve cold cases, by linking crime-scene DNA with the DNA of a suspect's relative, which is contained in a direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic database. The relative’s genetic data acts as a silent witness, or genetic informant, wordlessly guiding law enforcement to a handful of potential suspects. At least thirty murderers and rapists have been arrested in this way, a process which I describe in careful detail in this article. Legal scholars have sounded many alarms, and have …

Changing Consultation, Elizabeth Kronk Warner, Kathy Lynn, Kyle Whyte
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
As climate change and fossil fuel extractive industries ravage Indian country and burden many Indigenous communities with risks, the negative impacts on tribal sovereignty, health, and cultural resources demand consultation between tribes and the federal government. Yet, this is an area where the law fails to provide adequate guidance to parties who should be engaging or are already engaging in tribal consultations. The law, both domestic and international, may require that consultation occurs, but leaves parties to determine themselves what constitutes effective and efficient consultation. The legacy of the law’s inability to provide effective guidance has generated a litany of …

Understanding Facilitators And Barriers To Dietary Management Of Type 2 Diabetes Among Hispanic Men: Perceptions Of Health Professionals, Leah Galitzdorfer, Melissa Fuster Phd, Pamela Koch Edd, Rd
Publications and Research
Objectives: Hispanic Americans have a higher prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) compared to non-Hispanic whites, and are at greater risk for developing diabetes-related complications. Barriers and facilitators to dietary managment of T2DM among this population may be particularly influenced by culture and gender, where traditional gender roles and values prevent Hispanic men from engaging in healthy dietary self-management behaviors. Despite this, research focusing on dietary management of T2DM among Hispanic men is scant. This study aimed to assess perceived barriers and facilitators, as well as perceived influences of culture and gender on the dietary management of T2DM among Hispanic …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Purpose/Aims:
Our primary aim was to investigate whether gardens were a source of nutrition for the food bank users we sampled, and whether food bank recipients would be interested in using gardens as a nutritional resource.
Rationale/Background:
Food bank users represent an important population to explore the benefits of garden access for because they are at risk for insufficient access to fresh nutrient dense foods, may benefit from a low cost alternative sources of food, and they experience higher incidence of food insecurity. The activity of gardening also provides a myriad of secondary health benefits such as elevating mood, easing …

The Effect Of Food And Nutrition On Families And Students Along With The Effects On Behavior And Academics In The Classroom, Katherine Anderson
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Families and children around the world are trying to find the food they need to live healthy, balanced lives. There are many factors that contribute to the demise of this becoming a reality for them. Food deserts, low income, food insecurity and the mental stability of parents everywhere contribute to this demise. There are ways to overcome these issues. When children do not have the food they need to fuel their minds and bodies, including test scores, and behavior in the classroom are affected. Their mental capacity to learn is diminished along with behavior issues due to these same factors …
