Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease –The Gut Microbiome As A Risk Factor, Kristin J. Gedda Apr 2020

Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease –The Gut Microbiome As A Risk Factor, Kristin J. Gedda

Physician Assistant Capstones

As it remains, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the leading cause of mortality across the globe accounting for as many as 17.9 million deaths per year and projected to increase to more than 23.6 million deaths by 2030.1 Of the CVD related deaths, the majority are due to acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) and cerebral vascular accidents (CVA) and are associated with modifiable risk factors such as obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes.2 Lifestyle modifications for decreasing these risk factors have been actively emphasized in healthcare, but do not eliminate the risks entirely. In addition to diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, other …

Culturally Competent Diabetes Self-Management Education Improves Hba1c Levels In Hispanic Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Sirena Sechslingloff

Physician Assistant Capstones

There are several techniques that have been employed to make diabetes self-management programs culturally tailored to Hispanic communities. Among these include leading the self-management courses in Spanish and even more so with an instructor of the same cultural background. Another widely used approach is encouraging participants to bring a family member to the classes. In addition, many culturally tailored DSME programs hold classes in a community setting instead of health care centers to increase attendance rates. Lastly, incorporating cooking classes or educating patients on healthier eating based on culturally traditional foods has been utilized in culturally tailored DSME courses.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation: A Natural Way To Lessen Symptoms Of Adhd, Chelsea Payne

Physician Assistant Capstones

The outcomes of combination omega-3 fatty acid supplementation compared to traditional stimulant treatment alone, on symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity will be examined. If adjunct therapy with fatty acids reduces ADHD symptoms, clinicians may be able to decrease traditional stimulant doses which would, in theory, reduce the negative side effects associated with that drug class and improve the patient’s quality of life.

The Predictive Value Of C-Reactive Protein In Relation To The Development Of Cardiovascular Disease, Ramon Simpson

Physician Assistant Capstones

The American Heart Association estimates that by 2035 over 130 million or 45.1 percent of the American population is projected to have some form of cardiovascular disease, defined as coronary heart disease, stable/unstable angina, heart failure and stroke. It is expected that the total cost of treatment for patients with cardiovascular disease will reach 1.1 trillion by 2035 accordingly. Approximately 17.9 million deaths that were reported in 2016 were related to cardiovascular disease based on the World Health Organization statistics. The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association suggest that primary prevention is accredited to early identification of modifiable …

It also uses a multinomial logit model to determine the relative probability of online shoppers spending more or less, given specific consumer characteristics. The independent variable of interest in both models is whether or not the respondent is a recipient of a government assistance food program. These analyses used data from a stratified random sample of 1,205 online shoppers residing in the southern region of the United States. “Online shoppers” in …

Bodyweight Management And Relationship To Health In The Horse (Equus Caballus), Beverly Ann Gartland Apr 2020

Bodyweight Management And Relationship To Health In The Horse (Equus Caballus), Beverly Ann Gartland

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The health of the horse is of interest to animal caretakers. Horses that fall within a prescribed range of bodyweight and body condition may be healthier than horses that are lower or higher. Two studies were conducted related to body weight and condition of the horse. The first study examined if restricting the amount of space available for horses to graze could reduce bodyweight without having a strong impact on time budgets of the horse or removing horses from pasture. This method was determined to be effective in preventing weight gain, although there was an increase in grazing behavior displayed …

Is Physical Activity During Late Pregnancy Related To Infant Body Composition At Birth?, Brenna Menke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Exercise is typically regarded as having a positive impact on maternal and infant health. However, the relationship between maternal physical activity and infant body composition is unclear. The aim of this project was to determine how a physically active lifestyle during late pregnancy influences infant anthropometrics at birth. Pregnant women (34-39 weeks gestation) with low-risk pregnancies were given the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ) and an accelerometer to wear on their non-dominant wrist for seven consecutive days. Approximately 24-48 hours after delivery, infant body composition was assessed utilizing air displacement plethysmography at the patients’ bedside. Fifty-five pregnant women participated (age: …

Simpler Method To Compare Starch Hydrolysis Rate And In Vitro Expected Glycemic Index Of Flours, Courtney Simons, Charles Ciampaglio

Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

In vitro expected glycemic index (eGI) is a reliable tool to predict postprandial blood glucose concentrations. Making these predictions is important particularly for diabetespatients who must manage their health condition by consuming products with more slowly digestible carbohydrates. Current methods require lengthy preparation time and expensive equipment. In this study, a cheaper and faster in vitro method was developed. Legume samples were digested with continuous agitation for 3 hours with the help of alpha-amylase enzyme. Glucose production was monitored by measuring changes in refractive index using a refractometer. Relative hydrolysis rates of flours demonstrated effectiveness of the method to differentiate …

Whole Fat Stirred Coconut Yoghurt Increases Serum Igg Level In Adult Wistar Rat Model, Samuel Chetachukwu Adegoke, Chakree Thongraung, Chutha Takahashi Yupanqui, Reza Tahergorabi

Spring 2020 Graduate Student Research Symposium

Introduction
Regular consumption of yoghurt particularly in immunocompromised populations, may enhance immune response. The mucosal immune system provides the initial immunological barrier against most pathogens. Immunoglobulin A (IgA), the predominant mucosal antibody is thought to mediate defense functions at different anatomic levels in relation to mucosal epithelium. Consumption of yoghurts containing probiotic bacteria such as lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria can result to faster isotype switching concomitantly leading to increased resistance to immune-related diseases. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the immunomodulatory properties of whole and reduced-fat stirred coconut yoghurt in adult male Wistar rat model. The high prevalence of milk …

A Comparison Of High-Intensity Interval Running And Tabata On Post-Exercise Metabolism: A Pilot Analysis, Lauren Pate Apr 2020

A Comparison Of High-Intensity Interval Running And Tabata On Post-Exercise Metabolism: A Pilot Analysis, Lauren Pate

Undergraduate Research Conference

Introduction

• It is well established that energy expenditure following exercise (EPOC) remains elevated above resting values for a period of time (3).

• The magnitude and duration of this elevation may be primarily dependent on exercise intensity, with exercise duration and expenditure having a smaller influence (3, 6).

• Short durations (≤ 30 minutes) of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) is becoming a popular alternative for individuals who have limited time to exercise (5).

• When compared to rest, short-duration HIIE has been reported to elicit similar elevations in EPOC when compared to longer bouts of moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) …

Effect Of Reduced Neurogenesis On Microglial Activation, Amelia Smith Apr 2020

Effect Of Reduced Neurogenesis On Microglial Activation, Amelia Smith

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

The geriatric population of America has grown exponentially in the past century. Health degradations and expensive medical care are characteristic of this population with many of these costs due to age-related cognitive decline. It is essential to completely understand the mechanisms of normal and abnormal aging in the search for treatments for cognitive decline. A reduction of neurogenesis is a common factor in aging, but this reduction is even more drastic in individuals experiencing cognitive decline. It is unclear what effect reduced neurogenesis has on the extracellular environment, including glial cells. In particular, changes in microglial activation could be related …
