Somebody Google A Doctor! Urgent Health Information Seeking Habits Of Young Adults, Jason Anthony Cain, Cory Armstrong, Jue Hou
Faculty and Student Publications
Introduction: While much scholarship has been done on health information-seeking habits, comparatively little has been done on these habits among young adults. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to determine to which media young adults turn during an urgent health crisis, which factors correspond to their choice, and if information-seeking corresponded to visiting a health professional. Method: A survey method was used, sampling students from two large universities. Results: Credibility was the most consistent factor in predicting respondent media choice for an urgent health matter. Whether respondents were socially conservative or liberal affected media choice, as did perceptions …

Evaluation Of Balance And A Timed Walk On Ankle Brachial Pressure Index And Potential Blood Measures Of Cardiovascular Health, Hannah M. Twiddy, Patrick B. Wilson, Leyrn Reynolds
College of Education & Professional Studies (Darden) Posters
Clinicians are focused on ways to preserve function, independence, and quality of life in the aging adult population. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.[1]. Thus, assessing the extent of this disease is a high priority in preserving health throughout the lifespan. When determining risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease, functional assessments are recognized as a way to embed function-focused care into assessing disease risk [2]. Ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) is a non-invasive reliable predictor for identifying cardiovascular disease risk and mortality [3]. Thus, the purpose was to evaluate the association between functional assessments and ankle brachial …

Healthy Foods In Schools: Communicating With Children, Carolina Rodriguez-Ospina
College of Arts and Letters Posters
“Eat well to grow up healthy” is the most memorable message that families transmitted to their children, but what happens with these words of wisdom when the kids have to face the world of school cafeterias? Do they have enough choices to follow these recommendations? Do they want to look for healthy food? These are some questions that can be answered through analyzing meals in school and the narrative related to it. Moreover, some strategies have been created to persuade kids to eat healthily. In the reviewed literature, a lot of sources and procedures are studied to improve choices that …
Phase Angle Adaptation To Exercise Training In Cancer Patients Undergoing Treatment, Nicholas Harman, Nathaniel Croteau, Reid Hayward
Phase Angle Adaptation To Exercise Training In Cancer Patients Undergoing Treatment, Nicholas Harman, Nathaniel Croteau, Reid Hayward
2020 Graduate Presentations
Phase angle is a measure of cellular resistance and reactance to bioelectrical impedance analysis. This measurement is useful as a marker of cell membrane integrity and is used as a prognostic marker in several clinical populations. Cancer and its related treatments impact cell membrane integrity, leading to poor cell function. Exercise is shown to increase phase angle, resulting in lowered risk of hospitalization and cardiovascular events. However, the effect of chronic exercise training on phase angle in the cancer population is unclear. Purpose: To assess the effect of chronic exercise on phase angle in cancer patients who are actively undergoing …
Measuring Iron Concentrations In Individuals With Cribra Orbitalia And Porotic Hyperostosis Using Xrf, Eduardo Maya
Measuring Iron Concentrations In Individuals With Cribra Orbitalia And Porotic Hyperostosis Using Xrf, Eduardo Maya
2020 Undergraduate Presentations
One controversy within bioarchaeology revolves around identifying what factors cause cribra orbitalia (CO) and porotic hyperostosis (PH). These two pathological conditions identified by porosities on the human cranium are used by bioarchaeologists as indicators of the overall health of archaeological human remains. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was once widely believed to cause these conditions. Because of the hypothesis connecting CO and PH to IDA, researchers often assume remains with porosities were afflicted with IDA. This leads to other assumptions about that individual’s life history, including assumptions that afflicted individuals may have had parasitic infections, limited diet (i.e., mal- or under-nutrition), …

Adhd And Its Effects On Young Minority College Adults, Aizana Hunt
2020 Undergraduate Presentations
Ever since ADHD was first discovered, it has been a hindrance and a psychological monster to people who have been negatively impacted, and they must find ways to look at things in a different manner. I want to know the history and the background of when ADHD was first discovered and when the term was originated. Also, understanding how the disability occurs and being able to figure out why it is more prevalent in boys than in girls may also help immensely. I also want to explore why ADHD occurs more frequently in lower income families of color. Being able …

The Tensions Of Mobilizing Emergent Tactics: Lessons From The Standing Rock Occupation, Margaret E. Breen
The Tensions Of Mobilizing Emergent Tactics: Lessons From The Standing Rock Occupation, Margaret E. Breen
Sociology Honors Projects
The Dakota Access Pipeline is an oil pipeline that sparked a massive uprising in the fall of 2016 due to its environmental impacts, and violation of Native treaty rights. Upwards of 10,000 people participated in the six-month-long occupation in North Dakota and there were hundreds of injuries and arrests. What sparked this tactical innovation? And what tensions arose from this strategy? In an attempt to answer these questions, I have interviewed water protectors who participated in the occupation, and analyzed interview records with movement leaders. From this research, I conclude that the limited resources available to the movement led to …

The Economic Impacts Of School Closure In Rural Maine, Heather Perry
The Economic Impacts Of School Closure In Rural Maine, Heather Perry
Muskie School Dissertations
The purpose of this case study research was to examine the economic impact of school closures on three rural communities in Maine. I created a conceptual framework around six healthy community economic markers. Each of the six markers are studied in 2010 when schools were closed and then again in 2016. This data, in addition to perceptions data from stakeholders in each of the three communities was studied to determine if the closure of the school had any impact on these healthy economic markers. Findings suggest that there were no negative impact to the economic markers studied within the three …
Relief Of Procedural Pain In Infants And Neonates, Allye Camden
Relief Of Procedural Pain In Infants And Neonates, Allye Camden
The University Honors Program
Procedural pain occurs in the hospital setting due to a variety of procedures and treatments conducted throughout a patient’s stay. Pain is often assessed in infants and neonates but is not always treated consistently due to the multiple number of pain relief methods. The objective of this literature review is to identify the most effective interventions to relieve procedural pain in infants and neonates. Forty articles were analyzed and synthesized to determine the best pain relief methods to use when providing nursing care to infants and neonates. Based on the results of the literature review, nutritive sucking, positioning techniques, and …
Design And Analysis Of A Piezoelectric Pulse Wave Velocity Sensor, Haley Richards, Andrew Closson, John Xj Zhang
Design And Analysis Of A Piezoelectric Pulse Wave Velocity Sensor, Haley Richards, Andrew Closson, John Xj Zhang
ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)
Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) is strongly correlated with blood pressure and a valuable biomarker in assessing hypertension. This report evaluates the feasibility of noninvasive blood pressure determination from piezoelectric PWV measurements. A wearable piezoelectric prototype was developed to detect PWV in the radial artery, and a computational model of the sensor was designed to simulate a piezoelectric sensor response under ideal conditions. These methods provide insight into the relationship between PWV and blood pressure, and the ability of piezoelectric materials to detect blood flow characteristics. This work lays the groundwork for future device development in this field.

Two Cases Of Infantile Botulism In Virginia That Highlight The Importance Of Early Clinical Diagnosis And Proper Reporting, Treatment, And Prevention, Scott Keel Md, Lisa Uherick Md
Virginia Journal of Public Health
Infantile botulism is a rare condition that primarily affects infants under the age of 6 months. This disease is caused by ingestion of Clostridium Botulinum spores that are found in soil or honey. Once ingested, the spores germinate into bacteria that colonize the infant’s immature intestinal tract and synthesize a toxin. This toxin irreversibly binds acetylcholine receptors, leading to the clinical presentation of progressively worsening constipation, weakness, hypotonia, poor feeding, weak cry, and decreased activity. If enough toxins are released, life-threatening flaccid paralysis with respiratory failure can ensue. Fortunately, with high clinical suspicion, a physician can gain access to life-saving …

Which Diet Should Providers Recommend To Patients To Help Reduce Their Risk Of Cognitive Decline And Alzheimer’S Disease?, Becca E. Escoto
Physician Assistant Capstones
Recent studies indicate that in the United States 6.1 million people had clinical Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) or mild cognitive impairment in 2017. This number is expected to grow to 15 million by 2060.1 The World Alzheimer Report of 2015 estimated the global cost of AD to be one trillion US dollars in 2018, and AD is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.2 As life expectancy throughout the world increases, these numbers will continue to grow. Interventions and preventative measures are important to implement in all patient populations as they could delay disease onset …
Utilization Of Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Access In The Reduction Of Central Venous Catheter Insertion, Megan Culberson
Utilization Of Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Access In The Reduction Of Central Venous Catheter Insertion, Megan Culberson
Physician Assistant Capstones
Intravenous (IV) catheter placement is the most frequently performed hospital procedure. IV catheters are essential for administering medications, fluids, radiographic contrast media, and collecting blood specimens. , However, IV catheter placement can be problematic in patients with veins that are not palpable or visible as this may delay the course of treatment. Most studies define difficult venous access as undergoing at least two IV attempts without success or use of other methods of IV placement. Alternative means of IV access include the use of an atypical vein (i.e., external jugular vein), ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheter (USGPIV) placement, intraosseous (IO) device …
