Participatory Pasture Development In Hot Arid Region Of India, Arun Kumar Misra, R. P. Singh, Ram Narayan Kumawat, Mavji Patidar, M. M. Roy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Livestock production is one of the main occupations of resource-poor and resource-rich people living in India’s arid regions, and common grazing lands have always played a major role in livestock based livelihood systems, as around 50% of animals depend on grazing (Misra et al, 2015). According to the National Sample Survey Organization, common property land resources constitute about 15% of the total geographical area of India, of which 23% is community pasture and grazing lands and 16% have been classified as village forests and woodlots (NSSO, 1999). At another level, India has the largest livestock population in the world, …

Feasibility Of Buffalo Rearing On Pasture In Tropical Climate Of Andaman And Nicobar Islands, M. S. Kundu, A. Kundu, S. Dam Roy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands form the Southern most tip of the Indian subcontinent, located (6-14° N latitude and 92-94°E longitude) in the South Eastern part of the Bay of Bengal .There are 572 Islands of which only 37 are currently inhabited. The Islands are beautiful and unique. The indigenous plants, animals, livestock, and marine life contribute to uniqueness of these Islands. The total livestock population has increased to many fold from meager 38.6 thousand in 1961 to 154.75 thousand in 2012. The buffalo constitute 5.08 per cent of the livestock of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The buffaloes …

Mycoplasma Pneumoniae: Analysis Of Metabolic Pathways In A Minimal Genome, Maria Guadalupe Hinojosa
Theses and Dissertations
Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a bacterium lacking a cell wall, is one of the main causative agents of atypical pneumonia and contributes to the development of chronic respiratory disease. This organism has undergone reductive evolution and relies on the human host for the acquisition of most nutrients. Around 33% of M. pneumoniae proteins are of unknown function. The aim of my research was to grow this organism in various carbon sources and media to understand which metabolic pathways could be present in this minimal organism. Twenty-seven carbon sources and seven different media were tested. The results show that glucose, maltose, and dextrin …

When you order seafood at a restaurant, do you get what you pay for? Scientists from Oceana, a non-profit marine conservation organization, conducted one of the largest seafood fraud investigations on 1,215 samples from 674 outlets in 21 states of the United States (U.S.) over the period 2010 to 2012.They found that there is, on average, a 33% probability that you do not actually get what you pay for. The share of mislabeled food was (a quite remarkable) 74% for seafood sold in sushi restaurants and 18% of seafood sold in gro-cery stores with mislabeled “red snapper” and “tuna” accounting …

Evaluation of late-onset sepsis antibiotic utilization and revision of empiric late-onset sepsis antibiotic prescribing guidelines
Neonatal late-onset sepsis (LOS) is commonly defined as an infection occurring after the first 72 hours of life. Late onset sepsis is a common complication of prolonged admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Due to risks associated with LOS, empiric antibiotics can be inappropriately prescribed, which may lead to multi-drug resistant bacteria, …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Extracts From The Leaves Of Marrubium Vulgare, Ashley Cravens
Undergraduate Theses
Natural products have served as powerful therapeutics against pathogenic bacteria since the golden age of antibiotics of the mid-20th century. In the United States, antibiotics are a key component of modern medicine and are one of the top written prescriptions every year. However, overuse and misuse of antibiotics has led to an increasing frequency of antibiotic-resistant infections. These infections are difficult and expensive to treat, often resulting in increased length of illness, hospital stays, and mortality rates. This demonstrates a clear need for novel antibiotics in for modern medicine. Murrubium vulgare (white horehound) is a shrub found in the Appalachia …

Comparative Effects Of Technical-Grade And Formulated Chlorantraniliprole To The Survivorship And Locomotor Activity Of The Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera (L.), Jennifer R. Williams, Daniel R. Swale, Troy D. Anderson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Background: The loss of honey bee colonies is a nationally recognized problem that demands attention from both the scientific community and the beekeeping industry. One outstanding threat is the unintended exposure of these pollinators to agricultural pesticides. Anthranilic diamides, such as chlorantraniliprole, are registered for use in stone and pome fruits, vegetables, turf, and grains. There are few publicly available studies that provide an analysis of chlorantraniliprole effects on the survivorship and locomotion activity of beneficial, pollinating insects such as honey bees. The data gathered in this study provide the acute toxicity, 30-day survivorship, and locomotor activity of honey …

Birth Across Borders: Migueleña Maternal Experience In Palm Beach County, Florida, Inbal Mazar
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Dangers for pregnant Maya women in San Miguel Acatán, a highland hamlet in Huehuetenango, Guatemala are exceptionally high. Those who migrate to Palm Beach County, Florida also face significant risks during pregnancy. However, conceptualizing migrants as vulnerable and non-agentive dismisses the opportunity to explore other dimensions of migrant women experiences. Interviews with Migueleña mothers and midwives and health professionals and advocates in both regions revealed resilience strategies Migueleña migrants create and employ as they navigate linguistically and culturally foreign medical systems. The support they provide each other results in more positive maternal experiences under arduous circumstances. Over time, Migueleñas are …

Addressing The Social Determinants Of Health In The Clinic Setting, Larissa Sharma, Man Tran
Providence St. Vincent Internal Medicine 2020
INTRODUCTION: It is estimated that clinical care accounts for only 20% of health, while behaviors, physical environment, and social and economic factors determine the rest. The social determinants of health include the basic life needs of housing, food, transport, along with other factors that include employment, education, drug and alcohol use, dental and eye care, etc. Insecurity in these socioeconomic factors are expressed in chronic medical illness, mental health problems, substance use, all leading to high healthcare utilization. Healthcare costs and utilization decrease when when these needs are provided for. In a survey of 6,000 Providence patients, 50% expressed …

I grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago and had a relatively normal childhood but not necessarily an easy one. Shortly after graduating from Indiana University, I moved out west and have been working in the entertainment industry ever since. My life has been a beautiful and interesting adventure with twists and turns I could have never predicted.
In 2016 it seemed like everything was really coming together. I had been happily married to my wife and business partner Mary Lou Sandler since 2011, and we had been growing our photography/film production studio for as many years. I was …

Silicon Valley Notebook
This research studied the effects of children’s activities, family and social environments on their health. Results from the National Survey of Children’s Health (2011- 2012), supplemented by qualitative interviews with seven child development professionals, revealed that while children’s activities promoted health, parental control and distressed neighborhoods worsened it. These findings were supported by a set of theories, including Social Interactionism and Ecological Systems, and added to the literature on children’s health in today’s digital world.

Sourcing products locally is not just a trend, it is also an important step towards sustainable business practices. Sustainable business depends on balancing sales with the ability to maintain growth. Sustainability is a complex concept. In the charter for the UCLA Sustainability Committee, sustainability is defined as: “the physical development and institutional operating practices that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly with regard to use and waste of natural resources. Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite and …
