A High School Curriculum That Will Help Prepare Students For A Life Outside Of Academics, Kaitlyn Witt May 2020

A High School Curriculum That Will Help Prepare Students For A Life Outside Of Academics, Kaitlyn Witt

Honors Projects

Current high school curriculums are detailed to push students towards a college education. However, the curriculum does not prepare students for a life outside of academics. After creating a survey, the results showed that individuals that have completed their high school education do not feel prepared to enter the adult world. The individuals that took the survey responded that they did not feel comfortable managing their finances or cooking a meal on their own. In order to help prepare students for a life outside of the education, individuals in charge of creating a curriculum need to make revisions. After conducting …

Root Architecture And Morphology Of Advanced Synthetic Lines Developed By The Red Clover Breeding Program Of Inia-Chile, Fernando Ortega, Luis Inostroza, Catalina Vasquez, Joel Ibañez, Hernán Acuña

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important forage legumes in temperate regions of the world. In Chile, it is the only forage species with a breeding program that has been continue over decades and produced commercial cultivars. Because of the good seed and forage production potential, red clover cultivars released by the INIA breeding program (INIA-BP) are commercialized both in Chile and abroad. The main limitation of the species worldwide is its low persistence, determined by the high plant mortality due to the deterioration of the main root and crown (Ortega et al., 2014). …

Plant Growth Regulators For Mitigating Water Stress In Cowpea, Syama S. Menon, K. E. Savithri May 2020

Plant Growth Regulators For Mitigating Water Stress In Cowpea, Syama S. Menon, K. E. Savithri

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Water is becoming a scarce commodity for irrigation especially under the present changing climatic scenario. Water stress hampers important physiological and biochemical mechanisms leading to reduction in plant growth and yield. Studies revealed that the exogenous application of plant hormones has been found to alleviate the negative effects of various abiotic stresses. Cowpea, being a non-season bound crop, can be grown throughout the year and it performs well during summer season under irrigation, but water scarcity limits its area under cultivation. However, limited research works have been conducted to investigate the potential benefits of exogenous application of plant growth regulators …

Child Marriage In The U.S.: Loopholes In State Marriage Laws Perpetuate Child Marriage, Sarah Ochieng

Immigration and Human Rights Law Review

The practice of child marriage is often discussed in the context of developing countries and many people find it unthinkable that child marriage also occurs in developed countries such as the United States of America. However, child marriage is a serious problem in the United States that affects thousands of children each year. This comment reviews the loopholes in state marriage laws. Part II considers the scope of child marriage as a human rights violation and the effects of child marriage. It also provides a background of the loopholes in state marriage laws, and a focus on the marriage laws …

Occupational Therapy’S Role With Ventricular Assist Devices And The Promotion Of Travel Protocols, Natasha Chandra, Linda Suplicki

The VAD Journal

An option for individuals diagnosed with end-stage heart failure is to receive a ventricular assist device (VAD). In 2006, Shepherd and Wilding produced an article regarding occupational therapy’s role during the VAD process as they anticipated a growing need for this area of practice. Since that time, there continues to be a lack of supporting literature on occupational therapy’s important role with this population. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to explain an occupational therapist’s contribution on the VAD team, offer opportunities and interventions for enhancing quality of life for this unique population, and discuss an innovative travel protocol …

Exploring The Genomic Diversity Of The Trachymyrmex Septentrionalis-Associated Pseudonocardia Symbiont, Sarah Goldstein May 2020

Exploring The Genomic Diversity Of The Trachymyrmex Septentrionalis-Associated Pseudonocardia Symbiont, Sarah Goldstein

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is on the genomic diversity of a fungus-growing ant Trachymyrmex septentrionalis symbiont, the actinomycete bacterium Pseudonocardia. Pseudonocardia symbionts engage in host defense via the production of antimicrobial compounds that protect the symbiosis against fungal pathogens that attack the ant’s food source, pathogens that attack the ant hosts, and more generalized pathogens. These compounds are encoded by biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) in the genome of these Pseudonocardia and comprise an untapped resource for drug discovery.

Actinomycete genome sequencing is a key component of modern antimicrobial drug discovery efforts. Short-read sequencing leads to genome fragmentation as …

Navigating "Technoference" In The Family System, Kathlynn Sergent

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

This integrative literature review explores the increase of technology use in families, with a focus on how technology is disrupting in-person social interactions within the family system. Many studies have been conducted on how technology impacts a couple’s romantic relationship, and only a few have examined the relationship between the parent and child. This review is one of the first to examine how technology may affect the entire family unit from before children to raising adolescents. Each section of the family unit is examined, beginning with before children, followed by the early bonding and attachment associated with infant/childhood, and then …

Expert opinion suggests that efforts to address childhood obesity should seek to transform the environments in which children operate. The objective of this study was to describe the extent to which multisetting programs and policies interact with community and child predictors and are associated with child body mass index (BMI) in the 130 US communities participating in the Healthy Communities Study.

METHODS:

For 2 years beginning in fall 2013, we collected data through key informant interviews on community programs and policies related to healthy weight among children that occurred in the 10 years before the interview. We characterized community …

Biomaterials For Bone Regeneration: Tunable Structural And Mechanical Characteristics, Anwer Mhanawee May 2020

Biomaterials For Bone Regeneration: Tunable Structural And Mechanical Characteristics, Anwer Mhanawee

Theses and Dissertations

Tissue engineering is a promising alternative treatment for damaged tissues. In bone regeneration, bone graft replacements can be made from different biomaterials (basically ceramic and polymer) and used for different treatment purposes. In the first section of this dissertation, the Compression test results showed that its modulus of elasticity depends on its porosity. Also, we developed a testing method to measure the swelling force of the material during expansion due to liquid absorption. The maximum swelling force was found to be proportional to the material modulus. In the second part, we successfully design, fabricate and characterize a novel expandable bone …

Effects Of Warming On Decomposition Of Submerged Plant Litter And Associated Microorganisms In Streamside Channels, Kaity Ackerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surface air temperatures are predicted to increase in the near future, which will likely affect microbial activity and carbon flow in stream ecosystems. I performed an experiment in streamside channels at Coweeta Hydrological Laboratory, NC to assess responses of litter-associated microorganisms to moderate increases in water temperature (5 levels, ambient to +4°C). The objectives of the experiment were to determine: (1) if there are differences in the magnitude of responses to temperature among various microbial parameters and (2) whether microbial responses to temperature vary among plant litter of different carbon quality. Thus, I measured litter decomposition rate, fungal biomass (ergosterol), …

The Impact Of Acute Exercise On Factor Viii In Young E-Cigarette Smokers, Andrew R. Allen

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Abstract

Background: There is a strong association between factor VIII (FVIII) and presence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Exercise is a known trigger for myocardial infarction, and the majority of ischemic events from physical stress occur due to an occlusive thrombus. FVIII increases acutely with exercise and remains elevated hours after exercise. Furthermore, FVIII is also higher in cigarette smokers, however, it has not been investigated in e-cigarette smokers. The purpose of this study is to identify potential differences in FVIII before exercise, after exercise, and its magnitude of change in e-cigarette users versus non-users.

Methods: Eighteen individuals (8 …

Lipoprotein Associated Phospholipase A2 In Individuals With Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Kendall G. Clark

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Abstract

Introduction: Lipoprotein-associated Phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a protein produced by inflammatory cells in circulation and is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Prior research demonstrates that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) leads to increased inflammation and is also related to CVD. Physical activity is known to reduce inflammation and risk for both CVD and OSA. However, Lp-PLA2 has yet to be examined in individuals with OSA who do not have any other pre-existing conditions nor has it been associated with chronic physical activity. The purpose of this study was to examine if there is a relationship …
