Yield And Yield Component Development In Dual-Purpose Barley, A. K. Singh, Pradeep Saxena
Yield And Yield Component Development In Dual-Purpose Barley, A. K. Singh, Pradeep Saxena
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a widely adapted small-grain annual cereal and is a key feed and fodder in India (Kharub et al., 2013). Barley can provide nutrition to the animals through its green fodder at vegetative stage and grains after harvest from the regenerated plants. The vegetative portion of the crop is valuable as a source of pasture, cut green forage, and straw. Their relative importance is determined at different ontogenetic stages of plant. An area of barley breeding receiving increasing attention is the development of dual-purpose (green forage and grain) varieties for plains as well as …

The organization of ecological assemblages has important implications for ecosystem functioning, but little is known about how scavenger communities organize at the global scale. Here, we test four hypotheses on the factors affecting the network structure of terrestrial vertebrate scavenger assemblages and its implications on ecosystem functioning. We expect scavenger assemblages to be more nested (i.e. structured): 1) in species‐rich and productive regions, as nestedness has been linked to high competition for carrion resources, and 2) regions with low human impact, because the most efficient carrion consumers that promote nestedness are large vertebrate scavengers, which are especially sensitive to human …

Assessing The Health Literacy Levels Of Diabetic Patients Located In Rural Southeast Kansas, Meghan Murray
Assessing The Health Literacy Levels Of Diabetic Patients Located In Rural Southeast Kansas, Meghan Murray
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Data shows that limited health literacy is prevalent throughout the United States. This data has also found a correlative relationship between limited health literacy and poor health outcomes. An individual’s health literacy level affects many areas of their health, including their ability to effectively manage chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus. Awareness of an individual’s health literacy level allows for targeted interventions and a potential improvement for a patient’s health outcomes. The Newest Vital Sign (NVS) is a validated screening tool that allows for the identification of a patient’s likely health literacy level. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing …

Dietary self-monitoring adherence using a paper diary is associated with weight loss; however, few studies have examined this association with dietary self-monitoring apps. Objectives: 1) explore if an association exists between app-based dietary self-monitoring and weight change among adults with overweight or obesity and 2) explore the relationships between the frequency, consistency, and completeness of self-monitoring and weight change. Methods: Participants self-monitored dietary intake for 8 weeks using the app Calorie Counter by FatSecret. Participants were assigned …
Examining Holistic Care: From Early Medicine To Modern Practice, Molly Potter
Examining Holistic Care: From Early Medicine To Modern Practice, Molly Potter
Thinking Matters Symposium
While holistic medicine is the focus of current textbooks and guidelines for providing care and is being universally recognized in modern-day practice, it is not a new concept. The practice of holistic medicine looks at the patient as more than the identified problem and treats the human body as a machine with many parts that all work together for optimal functioning, so all aspects of the person —physical, psychological, and social—are taken into account. The roots of holistic medicine extend back to Hippocrates —the Father of Medicine—and continue through the modern time, following the advances of Florence Nightingale, the first …

Estimating Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Maine Using Hospital Discharge Data, Emily Bauer Mph
Thinking Matters Symposium
Incidence of NAS has increased in the US from 1.5 to 8.0 cases per 1000 hospital births from 2004 to 2014. Among 28 states with available data, Maine had the third highest annual change in incidence rate from 2009 to 2012, with 30.4 NAS cases per 1000 hospital births. As rates of NAS appeared to be approximately 5 times higher in Maine than the national average, this warranted further examination of trends of NAS among hospital births in Maine using more recent data.
The Physiology And Evolution Of Selenite Respiration In Bacteria, Michael Wells
The Physiology And Evolution Of Selenite Respiration In Bacteria, Michael Wells
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The selenium oxyanions selenate (Se(VI)) and selenite (Se(IV)) can be utilized by some bacteria and archaea as terminal electron acceptors in anaerobic respiration. Se(VI) and Se(IV) respiration is mediated by a phylogenetically and ecologically diverse array of organisms, suggesting that selenium respiration is ubiquitous in natural environments. Several respiratory Se(VI) reductases have been characterized in bacteria, revealing that Se(VI) respiration has evolved independently several times in this domain. Se(IV) respiration, in contrast, has yet to be characterized. I have purified and characterized the first respiratory Se(IV) reductase from Bacillus selenitireducens MLS10. The Se(IV) reductase appeared to purify as a single …

Gene Delivery To The Blood-Brain Barrier For Ischemic Stroke Therapy, Wanzhu Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stroke is a major cause of death in the United States. We aim to develop safe and efficient approaches for the treatment of stroke. Regenerative therapies have been identified as the major need for curing stroke [1]. We explored two different carriers (poly (ethylene glycol)5k-poly (L-aspartate-diethylenetriamine)48 (PEG-DET) / Pluronic P84 (P84) and exosomes (EXOs) / microvesicles (MVs)) to deliver brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plasmid DNA (pDNA), a functional gene encoding a neurotrophin. In the first project, our data showed that DNA nanoparticles (NPs) with 0.03% P84 was a promising formulation to deliver Luciferase pDNA into immortalized human …
Demonstrable Effect Of Vocal Changes On Singing Voices Of Post-Menopausal Women, Haley K. Griffith
Demonstrable Effect Of Vocal Changes On Singing Voices Of Post-Menopausal Women, Haley K. Griffith
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
There is little research concerning the impacts of menopause on the female singing voice, and few research studies examine any treatment methods or exercises to help sustain vocal quality throughout and after menopause. To determine areas in which more detailed studies could be completed, I completed a thorough literature review of current research studies that investigate relationships between menopause and the voice. Many studies examined vocal symptoms of menopause, such as a lowered fundamental frequency (F0) and decreased vocal quality. However, there exists no formally researched or published vocal exercises that help to mitigate these menopausal voice symptoms.

Feminism And Low Breastfeeding Rates In France, Megan Wadsworth
Honors Theses
Breastfeeding rates in France are among the lowest in high-income countries, indicating that French mothers do not breastfeed for nearly as long as is recommended by healthcare professionals and international health organizations. French government, society and conflicting feminist perspectives all influence the likelihood that mothers will breastfeed. The French government has regulations in place to protect women’s right to breastfeed in public and in the workplace, but it is unclear if these are truly beneficial for French women. French society is a seemingly inhospitable environment in which mothers do not feel safe and secure to breastfeed publicly. Motherhood and feminism …
