Counting the number of unique items in a data set is of interest in many applications. For example, the owner of a web property, e.g., a video sharing website, a social media website, a search engine, etc., benefits from knowing the number of unique visitors to their site, the number of unique people that a certain advertisement was shown to, etc. This disclosure describes a practical cardinality estimator that uses O(m + log log N) space and has a conjectured O(1/sqrt(m)) relative error, where m is an accuracy parameter and N is the maximum cardinality that …

English Language and Literature

COVID19 caught almost every higher education institution off guard. The pandemic interrupted the teaching and learning process and required immediate implementation of emergency remote learning strategies. Teaching pedagogy turned to new ways of thinking about learning. Consequently, both academic staff and students had to adapt without warning to the challenges of teaching with advanced technology from home which was taking the world by storm. Overcoming this challenge in Egypt has been much easier for private universities in comparison to state universities because of the availability of facilities, funding, smaller cohorts and validation by partner western universities. This paper shares reflections …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Using new mathematical and data-driven techniques, we propose new indices to measure and predict the strength of different El Niño events and how they affect regions like the Nile River Basin (NRB). Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), when applied to Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), yields three Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) tracking recognizable and physically significant non-stationary processes. The aim is to characterize underlying signals driving ENSO as reflected in SOI, and show that those signals also meaningfully affect other physical processes with scientific and predictive utility. In the end, signals are identified which have a strong statistical relationship with various physical …

A Model For Massless Gravitons In Radiation And Matter Dominated Universes, Ioannis Haranas, Eli Cavan, Ioannis Gkigkitzis

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A massless model of the graviton is explored by considering the minimum amount of information they can carry. The total entropy of the universe is calculated and compared to estimates from Super Massive Black holes and massive models of the graviton. The running cosmological constant is calculated using the entropy relation previously computed and compared to its experimentally accepted value. Both results are quantified considering radiation and matter dominated universes.

Essays In Monetary Policy For Emergingmarket Economies., Sargam Gupta Dr. Nov 2020

Essays In Monetary Policy For Emergingmarket Economies., Sargam Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The eectiveness of monetary policy in emerging market economies (EMEs) depends on both internal and external factors. Central banks in EMEs have been grappling with volatile capital ows and instability in exchange rates, as a result of unconventional monetary policies adopted by advanced economies (AEs) in the post Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period of 2008-2009 (see Dedola et al. (2017) and Korinek (2018)).1 Concerns related to the inadequacy of monetary policy in EMEs in stabilizing exchange rates have also been raised in a recent speech delivered by Agustin Carstens at the London School of Economics.2 Domestically, what makes monetary policy …

Arts Education: Benefits, Disparities, And Reaching For Equal Access, Madelaine Shreeman Nov 2020

Arts Education: Benefits, Disparities, And Reaching For Equal Access, Madelaine Shreeman

Senior Honors Theses

Arts education is a unique way to engage students. The arts include, but are not limited to, music, theatre, visual/studio arts, poetry, and dance; they are powerful bridges for students to knowledge and classroom contribution. They assist students with lower academic achievement, problematic behavior, or those who have a likelihood of dropping out of school. While there are plenty of resources displaying the student benefits, there remain inequalities in access to arts education among students across America. Often, areas and schools that generally receive fewer opportunities or less arts funding are ones with more at-risk youth. Disproportionate arts access negatively …

Who Relocates, Where Do They Move, And Why?, Yung Chun, Jason Jabbari, Pranav Nandan, Andrew Foell, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Social Policy Institute Research

The lack of socioeconomic mobility among marginalized populations leads to the concentration of poverty, a long-standing issue in American cities. Empirical studies on neighborhood effects have found that poverty concentration adversely affects the socioeconomic mobility of residents—associated with their economic well-being, employment, education, health, and safety—in lower-income neighborhoods. Through a variety of neighborhood revitalization projects, federal, state, and local governments have put enormous efforts into cutting the vicious cycle of poverty while increasing the socioeconomic mobility of lower-income households. One of these projects, the Choice Neighborhood Initiative, is a recent Federal effort to revitalize distressed public housing sites in American …

Technical science and innovation

The research is devoted to improving the technology of obtaining alternative types of energy carriers by applying methods of pyrolysis of unclaimed types of solid domestic wastes of biological origin, which also allow solving the tasks of improving the ecological situation in the places of formation. The practical value and relevance of this research lies in the development of advanced technology for obtaining alternative fuels. The proposed pyrolysis unit allows producing gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons in a continuous cycle. In the atmosphere of the gasifying agent (air, oxygen, water vapor, carbon dioxide or their mixture), the gasification process is primarily …

Determining Count Of Yarn Without Measuring Its Length., Hamdy Ahmed Ebraheem Nov 2020

Determining Count Of Yarn Without Measuring Its Length., Hamdy Ahmed Ebraheem

Mansoura Engineering Journal

A new method for measuring yam count is presented in this research work. This method depends on weight measurements. Yarn length measurement is avoided because of problems associated with it. The new test method is built on replacing yarn length measuring by weight measuring and then through pure mathematical relations yam count can be calculated. Yarn count is expressed as a function of yam weight and diameter of a cylinder. Before yarn is tested, it goes through a forming process using cylinders of a known diameter to get a new shape which can be mathematically assessed. Formed yarn is weighed. …

Evolutionary Approach-Based Methodology For Egyptian Utility Restoration., Magdy Mohamed El-Saadwi, A . Hassan, R. Ebrahim

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Restoration of a large electric grid after a partial or complete system blackout is a difficult task complicated by many factors, including unknown cause, abnormal operating conditions, infrequently used procedures and unpredictable system configurations. Large utilities must have different scenarios and tools to deal with this problem. The coordination and overall organization of the several aspects of the restoration process will largely determine the effectiveness of the restoration and its speed of progress. The most basic determinants of this organization are the relative roles played by the operator and the computer. Thus there arises a choice between two basic organizing …

Subnormality Of Powers Of Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Sang Hoon Lee, Woo Young Lee, Jasang Yoon Nov 2020

Subnormality Of Powers Of Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Sang Hoon Lee, Woo Young Lee, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Given a pair of commuting subnormal Hilbert space operators, the Lifting Problem for Commuting Subnormals (LPCS) asks for necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a commuting pair of normal extensions of and ; in other words, is a subnormal pair. The LPCS is a longstanding open problem in the operator theory. In this paper, we consider the LPCS of a class of powers of -variable weighted shifts. Our main theorem states that if a “corner” of a 2-variable weighted shift is subnormal, then is subnormal if and only if a power is subnormal for some . As a …
