The Vimentin Cytoskeleton: When Polymer Physics Meets Cell Biology, Alison E. Patteson, Robert J. Carroll, Daniel V. Iwamoto, Paul A. Janmey

Physics - All Scholarship

The proper functions of tissues depend on the ability of cells to withstand stress and maintain shape. Central to this process is the cytoskeleton, comprised of three polymeric networks: F-actin, microtubules, and intermediate filaments (IFs). IF proteins are among the most abundant cytoskeletal proteins in cells; yet they remain some of the least understood. Their structure and function deviate from those of their cytoskeletal partners, F-actin and microtubules. IF networks show a unique combination of extensibility, flexibility and toughness that confers mechanical resilience to the cell. Vimentin is an IF protein expressed in mesenchymal cells. This review highlights exciting new …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The X-ray binary 4U 1954+31 has been classified as a low-mass X-ray binary containing an M giant and a neutron star (NS). It has also been included in the rare class of X-ray symbiotic binaries. The Gaia parallax, infrared colors, spectral type, abundances, and orbital properties of the M star demonstrate that the cool star in this system is not a low-mass giant but a high-mass M supergiant. Thus, 4U 1954+31 is a high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) containing a late-type supergiant. It is the only known binary system of this type. The mass of the M I is ${9}_{-2}^{+6}$ M⊙ …

Faculty Publications

Iopamidol (an iodinated X-ray contrast medium) and bromide are precursors in the formation of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The interactions of these precursors are vital to elucidate the formation of halogenated DBPs during chloramination. This work investigated the formation of total organic halogen and select individual DBPs in two laboratory-chloraminated source waters containing iopamidol and bromide. Experiments were carried out in batch reactors containing Barberton source water (BSW) and Cleveland BSW (CSW), spiked with iopamidol (5 mu M), bromide (15 mu M), and 100 mu M monochloramine. Total organic iodine concentrations were approximately equal regardless of source water since they …

Characterization Of Pathogen Airborne Inoculum Density By Information Theoretic Analysis Of Spore Trap Time Series Data, Robin A. Choudhury, Neil Mcroberts

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

In a previous study, air sampling using vortex air samplers combined with species-specific amplification of pathogen DNA was carried out over two years in four or five locations in the Salinas Valley of California. The resulting time series data for the abundance of pathogen DNA trapped per day displayed complex dynamics with features of both deterministic (chaotic) and stochastic uncertainty. Methods of nonlinear time series analysis developed for the reconstruction of low dimensional attractors provided new insights into the complexity of pathogen abundance data. In particular, the analyses suggested that the length of time series data that it is practical …

Effect Of Operational Parameters On Three-Phase Air-Lift Pump Performance., M. Hosien, S. Selim

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Air-lift pump is a type of deep wells pumps. Sometimes, it can be used for removing water from mines or to pump slurry of sand and water or other solutions. The performance of air-lift pumps depends mainly on the operational parameters such as air volumetric flux, nature of lifted water and solid. The main objective of the present work is to study theoretically the air-lift pump performance under variety of operational parameters. A mathematical model simulating the performance of air-lift pump under various operational parameters was developed. A computer program was developed to solve the governing equation. The model results …

Unspecified Verticality Of Franck-Condon Transitions, Absorption And Emission Spectra Of Cyanine Dyes, And A Classically Inspired Approximation, Joseph D. Alia, Joseph A. Flack

Chemistry Publications

The computed vertical energy, Ev,a/f, from the equilibrium geometry of the initial electronic state is frequently considered as representative of the experimental excitation/emission energy, Eabs/fl = hc/λmax. Application of the quantum mechanical version of the Franck–Condon principle does not involve precise specification of nuclear positions before, after, or during an electronic transition. Moreover, the duration of an electronic transition is not experimentally accessible in spectra with resolved vibrational structure. It is shown that computed vibronic spectra based on TDDFT methods and application of quantum mechanical FC analysis predict Eabs = hc/λmax …

In the current era of rapid climate change, accurate characterization of climate-relevant gas dynamics-namely production, consumption, and net emissions-is required for all biomes, especially those ecosystems most susceptible to the impact of change. Marine environments include regions that act as net sources or sinks for numerous climateactive trace gases including methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). The temporal and spatial distributions of CH4 and N2O are controlled by the interaction of complex biogeochemical and physical processes. To evaluate and quantify how these mechanisms affect marine CH4 and N2O cycling requires a combination of traditional scientific disciplines including oceanography, microbiology, and …

New antibiotics are urgently needed to address increasing rates of multidrug resistant infections. Seventy-six diversely functionalized compounds, comprising five structural scaffolds, were synthesized and tested for their ability to inhibit microbial growth. Twenty-six compounds showed activity in the primary phenotypic screen at the Community for Open Antimicrobial Drug Discovery (CO-ADD). Follow-up testing of active molecules confirmed that two unnatural dipeptides inhibit the growth of Cryptococcus neoformans with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ≤ 8 μg/mL. Syntheses were carried out by undergraduate students at five schools implementing Distributed Drug Discovery (D3) programs. This report showcases that a collaborative research and educational …

The Fold Illusion: The Origins And Implications Of Ogives On Silicic Lavas, Graham Dm Andrews, Stuart Kenderes, Alan Whittington, Shelby L. Isom, Sarah Brown, Holly Danielle Pettus, Brenna Cole, Kailee Gokey

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Folds on the surfaces of mafic lavas are among the most readily recognized geological structures and are used as first-order criteria for identifying ancient lavas on Earth and other planetary bodies. However, the presence of surface-folds on the surface of silicic lavas is contested in this study and we challenge the widely accepted interpretation that silicic lava surfaces contain folds using examples from the western United States and Sardinia, Italy. We interpret the ridges and troughs on their upper surfaces, typically referred to as ‘ogives’ or ‘pressure ridges’, as fracture-bound structures rather than folds. We report on the absence of …

Creating Optimal Conditions For Reproducible Data Analysis In R With ‘Fertile’, Audrey M. Bertin, Benjamin Baumer Nov 2020

Creating Optimal Conditions For Reproducible Data Analysis In R With ‘Fertile’, Audrey M. Bertin, Benjamin Baumer

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The advancement of scientific knowledge increasingly depends on ensuring that data-driven research is reproducible: that two people with the same data obtain the same results. However, while the necessity of reproducibility is clear, there are significant behavioral and technical challenges that impede its widespread implementation and no clear consensus on standards of what constitutes reproducibility in published research. We present fertile, an R package that focuses on a series of common mistakes programmers make while conducting data science projects in R, primarily through the RStudio integrated development environment. fertile operates in two modes: proactively, to prevent reproducibility mistakes from happening …

Nearly 30,000 Late-Type Main-Sequence Stars With Stellar Age From Lamost Dr5, Jiajun Zhang, Terry D. Oswalt, Jingkun Zhao, Xilong Liang, Xianhao Ye, Gang Zhao

Publications

We construct a sample of nearly 30,000 main-sequence stars with 4500K < Teff < 5000K and stellar ages estimated by the chromospheric activity−age relation. This sample is used to determine the age distribution in the R − Z plane of the Galaxy, where R is the projected Galactocentric distance in the disk midplane and Z is the height above the disk midplane. As |Z| increases, the percentage of old stars becomes larger. It is known that scale-height of Galactic disk increases as R increases, which is called flare. A mild flare from R ∼ 8.0 to 9.0 kpc in stellar age distribution is found. We also find that the velocity dispersion increases with age as confirmed by previous studies. Finally we present spiral-shaped structures in Z − υZ phase space in three stellar age bins. The spiral is clearly seen in the age bin of [0, 1] Gyr, which suggests that a vertical perturbation to the disk probably took place within the last ∼ 1.0 Gyr.

Goamlp: Network Intrusion Detection With Multilayer Perceptron And Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm, Farshid Bagheri Saravi

Student Scholarship

In this paper, an intrusion detection system is introduced that uses data mining and machine learning concepts to detect network intrusion patterns. In the proposed method, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used as a learning technique in intrusion detection. The metaheuristic algorithm with the swarm-based approach is used to reduce intrusion detection errors. In the proposed method, the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) is used for better and more accurate learning of ANNs to reduce intrusion detection error rate. The role of the GOAMLP algorithm is to minimize the intrusion detection error in the neural network by selecting useful parameters …

An Approach Of Load Management And Cost Saving For Industrial Production Line Using Particle Swarm Optimization., Esraa Abd Elsadek, Hamdy Abd El-Khalek Ashour, Ragi Hamdy, Mohamed Moustafa Sedky

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The industrial revolution in Egypt and other developing countries need a huge amount of power, while utility could not be able to provide the needed energy and both the cost of energy and environmental issues should be also considered. So, energy saving can be one of the effective solutions to such problems. Demand Side Management (DSM) can be introduced as an effective system management for increasing the efficiency of the grid as it can save energy to both utility and consumer. DSM has different techniques including load shifting strategy that reshapes the load curve to reduce the peak demand and …

Bill Shankly, a former manager of Liverpool Football Club, once said: “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” Many die-hard fans of the sport would agree. But as much they might love “the beautiful game”, some will tell you that… well, it’s not always that exciting to watch. Of course, excitement, like all emotions, is subjective and depends a lot on context. Most fans come to see goals being scored, and the more scored by your team, the …

Educational Interpreters And The Dunning-Kruger Effect, Stephen Fitzmaurice

Journal of Interpretation

Kruger and Dunning (1999) found the least skilled individuals significantly overestimate their performance. However, as individuals increase their awareness their skills their predictions also become more accurate – the Dunning-Kruger Effect. This study examined the ability of educational interpreters working in public schools to predict their scores on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) a measure of interpreting skills. Findings indicate interpreters experience a Dunning-Kruger Effect in that the least skilled interpreters overestimate their interpreting skills, whereas better interpreters underestimate their interpreting skills. These findings raise important questions about whether lesser skilled educational interpreters are able to adhere to ethical …
