How Does Work-Based Learning Help Prepare Students For Life After High School, Frank A. Cacich
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Work based learning is part of career and technical education that can help students to be better prepared for life after highschool. There are many different types of programs that make up a work based learning programming. These programs are for both Special Education students and general education students. Programming can encompass job shadowing, youth apprenticeships, clinical internships or practicums, and work experience programming. Another part of Work-Based Learning (WBL) is career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO). These are different student run organizations where youth can learn business, agriculture, health and other varying work based skills from professionals in the …

Achievement Gap With Latino Males, Matthew S. Caruso
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review reviews the literature of 30 studies completed in the last twenty years that examine barriers for latinx youth, their parents, and their learning communities (student, parent, teacher, etc). The achievement gap for Latino males is growing in the U.S. while simultaneously the population of the Latinx community grows. Researchers are finding unique responses in the Latinx community in terms of perceived barriers by all learning communities (White, black, other…). Their uniqueness is they trend to higher and lower than the rest of sample data, or Latino males will have different responses than latina females, where non-Latino responses …
Effective Differentiation Strategies For The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Emily C. Devroy
Effective Differentiation Strategies For The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Emily C. Devroy
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 sought to improve academic achievement for every child in the United States, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or background. Since NCLB, educators and researchers have given differentiation greater attention with the hope that it will provide effective strategies for ensuring that every child reaches their full potential. Differentiation, however, requires significant resources; many teachers report feeling overwhelmed when creating a differentiated classroom without proper administrative support and collaboration. This literature review seeks to answer the question of which differentiation strategies are most likely to increase student achievement by examining the research regarding …

Are restorative practices within schools an effective method for increasing student success? This literature review looks at the evidence available of restorative practices in reducing suspensions and expulsions, improving relationships, dealing with bullying, bringing about improved school morale through restorative circles, and lastly, looking at the challenges of successfully using restorative practices in schools. The evidence in literature does show the clear benefits that restorative practices have in all the mentioned areas. The challenges to implementing these practices are significant and need to be weighed before pursuing the venture of restorative practices in schools. Despite the challenges, restorative practices are …
Teaching English To Adolescent Language Learners, Carmen L. Gunderson
Teaching English To Adolescent Language Learners, Carmen L. Gunderson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teaching English to multilingual adolescent learners has its challenges. Pedagogy for English language learners is based on outdated language learning research. Curriculum available for the English language teacher (ELT) has relied on research related to monolinguals acquiring first language (L1). For the practitioner, these resources were not proving themselves to be effective in the classroom. The practitioner came to the literature review with these questions: What does the current brain research tell us about the language learning process for adolescents 10-24 years of age? What influence does L1 literacy skills have on the second language (L2) learning experience? What are …
Federal Regulation On The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities By The Use Of Accommodations And Modifications, Benjamin C. Isham
Federal Regulation On The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities By The Use Of Accommodations And Modifications, Benjamin C. Isham
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When the federal government enacted No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2001, it set the stage to provide inclusion to all students regardless of their academic or physical abilities in the classroom. However, there is often confusion between the federal and state governments, administrators, and teachers regarding what it entails and what accommodations are being recommended, and which ones work in the classroom. An examination of these levels is done to see where these confusions and interpretations arise when it comes to applying these in the field. The challenge is the federal government’s legal authority and applying it in a …
Deficit Discourse And Its Effects On English Learners, Amber Leigh Lewis
Deficit Discourse And Its Effects On English Learners, Amber Leigh Lewis
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Discourse has a profound effect on all students; it affects their sense of self, their beliefs, and their actions. Specifically, teachers who employ a deficit discourse in regard to English Learners (ELs) view ELs as less capable and more delinquent than their mainstream peers. In this paper, I seek to answer three questions: Why does deficit discourse exist in schools? How does it affect ELs? And, what can be done about it? Research suggests that deficit discourse is largely rooted in power dynamics between teachers and students, and its effects on ELs can be damaging. To change deficit discourse, teachers …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States, currently affects 1 in 54 children. As students with ASD spend more time mainstreamed with their neuro-typical peers, there is an increased need for effective social skills interventions that improve positive social interactions and promote friendships. This literature review focuses on Peer Mediated Instruction and Intervention (PMII) to increase social communication and interactions for students with ASD. The research indicated implementing PMII leads to significant social skills improvement for individuals with ASD. Information gained through the literature review provided the basis for a PMII program designed for …
Perennialism Through The Lens Of Otherness, Gabriel Fernandez-Borsot
Perennialism Through The Lens Of Otherness, Gabriel Fernandez-Borsot
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Otherness has been a subject of the utmost relevance for continental philosophy since the beginning of the 20th century, constituting what might be characterized as an otherness turn. Otherness is here understood as the awareness that one has that other beings or things have their own separate beingness that is not subsumed within oneself. Its essential role in human relations permits the creation of a critical perspective of analysis, a “lens of otherness.” Applying this lens to perennialism up through its latest iterations reveals some problematic aspects of this approach. By contrast, participatory thought may be a more “otherness compliant” …
Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age: Iv. Carl Jung's Archetypal Imagination As Futural Planetary Neo-Shamanism, Harry T. Hunt
Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age: Iv. Carl Jung's Archetypal Imagination As Futural Planetary Neo-Shamanism, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This series of papers on early anticipations of a spiritual New Age ends with Carl Jung’s version of a futural planetary-wide unus mundus rejoining person and cosmos, based on his psychoid linkage of quantum physics and consciousness, and especially on the neo-shamanic worldview emerging out of his spirit guided initiation in the more recently published Red Book. A cognitive-psychological re-evaluation of Jung’s archetypal imagination, the metaphoricity of his alchemical writings, and a comparison of Jung and Levi-Strauss on mythological thinking all support a contemporary view of Jung’s active imagination and mythic amplification as a spiritual intelligence based on a formal …
Social Constraints As A Mediator Of The Relations Of Discrimination To Anger Expression In A Community Sample, Sahira Hamid
Social Constraints As A Mediator Of The Relations Of Discrimination To Anger Expression In A Community Sample, Sahira Hamid
Theses and Dissertations
Research has consistently demonstrated that anger is the dominant emotional response following experiences of racial discrimination. Studying anger itself may not be sufficient because anger can be expressed in a variety of ways, therefore it is necessary to examine different forms of anger expression. I hypothesized that social constraint would mediate the relations between discrimination and anger expression. Social constraint in the context of discrimination refers to an individual’s perception that communication about episodes of discrimination will be invalidated or minimized by others (either the same race or other race individuals). Social constraint, in turn, may influence the expression of …
The Novel-Manifesto: Modernist Kunstlerromane And The Discourse Of Modernist Aesthetic Theory, Edward Stephen Marks
The Novel-Manifesto: Modernist Kunstlerromane And The Discourse Of Modernist Aesthetic Theory, Edward Stephen Marks
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes the modernist kunstlerroman as a site for aesthetic theorizing. Like the aesthetic manifestos that proliferated between 1890 and 1939, the kunstlerromane of this period advance a set of aesthetic criteria and values. The modernist kunstlerroman’s formal qualities—it’s an art object about art—as well as the period in which it is written—the aesthetically revolutionary modernist period—provide the foundation for reading modernist kunstlerromane as manifesto-like novels. Through close reading, three kunstlerromane of the period are explored as examples of the novel-manifesto: The Tragic Muse (1890), by Henry James; Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), by James …

Reaching In & Speaking Out: Performance And The Construction Of Identity In The Poetry Of Una Marson And Louise Bennett, Tejan Green Waszak
Theses and Dissertations
Reaching in & Speaking Out examines gender, race, and class in the poetry of Una Marson (1905-1965) and Louise Bennett (1919-2006). This dissertation takes a multidisciplinary approach to these two Jamaican women’s groundbreaking poetry, prioritizing the emotional stakes and historical traditions connected to their words through the varied performances within their poetry. This means keeping in mind each poet’s individual influences and vulnerabilities, based on their background, education, and social standing, and identifying how those aspects merge with their social climate and become visible through each poet’s work.
Bennett’s and Marson’s poetic style, delivery, and public personas differ greatly: while …
Colonial Trauma And Testimony In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Jamaica Kincaid’S Autobiography Of My Mother, Leana Rene
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will examine Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle to examine the colonial trauma and loss found in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Jamaica Kincaid’s Autobiography of My Mother, not just on a character level, but in a much larger colonial context. Some scholars have suggested that Shelley’s monster is a symbol of a colonized other (due to his appearance and certain features he has). Kincaid’s Xuela is for sure a colonized other because of the heritage of her mother. This thesis explores their abandonment by their creators as the abandonment of colonized nations from their colonizers. Even now, formerly colonized …

Perceptions Of Reading Academic Intervention Services And The Effectiveness Of A District-Wide Remedial Reading Program, Micheala Lauren Finlay
Theses and Dissertations
Remedial reading academic intervention services are provided to students who are reading below grade level. Student reading ability and progress is an essential component of the learning and success for each and every student. Academic intervention service programs for struggling students are state mandated in school grades where state standardized testing is present and encouraged in earlier grades to promote the progression of the development of reading. This study explores how a school district identifies student reading progress through a remedial reading program and how progress is monitored. Participants in this study include classroom teachers, reading teachers, and school building …
School Leaders’ Response To The Increasing Population Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Learners, Nia Hulse
Theses and Dissertations
While schools become more representative of a growing minority population, school leaders are responsible for making school policies reflective of the increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners. The purpose of this study was to examine the practices employed by school leaders in growing CLD schools to determine to what extent they employed culturally responsive school leadership practices. The methodology for this study was a multiple case study design. Through this qualitative approach, data triangulation was achieved by conducting interviews, a questionnaire, and collecting artifacts. In addition, purposeful sampling was used to obtain a school leader from an …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to examine the effects that teacher expectations have on the academic achievement of Hispanic female students in the eleventh grade. The goal was to shed light on the importance of teacher expectations for these students. Teacher expectations have been, and continue to be, a critical issue in education when addressing student achievement or lack thereof. Many educators feel that expectations give students a blueprint to success. Expectations allow students to formulate an idea of where they should be academically, while working on a pathway to get there. This study provides research that identifies the …

Neuropsychological Domains: Comparability In Construct Equivalence Across Test Batteries, Meghan Ashley Terzulli
Neuropsychological Domains: Comparability In Construct Equivalence Across Test Batteries, Meghan Ashley Terzulli
Theses and Dissertations
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2016) reported an increase in the number of non-native English-speaking students in U.S. public schools as well as a frequent coexistent correlation with low-SES and poverty, but not for all racial or ethnic minority groups. Because it is well known that SES and language difference play an important role in academic achievement, it is imperative that school psychologists attend to these variables when considering the validity of obtained test scores and their support for subsequent diagnostic conclusions, especially when current rates of ELLs in special education suggest that evaluations are not necessarily providing …
Clinical And Neuropsychological Differences In Low And High Worst-Point Suicide Ideators, Nahal Destiny Heydari
Clinical And Neuropsychological Differences In Low And High Worst-Point Suicide Ideators, Nahal Destiny Heydari
Theses and Dissertations
Suicide is a major public health concern that is complicated by the multidimensional nature of suicidal behaviors. Uncovering markers of vulnerability to acting on suicidal thoughts can aid in creating prevention interventions. Previous studies have found that serious and significant suicidal ideation in the past may be a predictor of later risk for suicide attempt. This paper examined worst-point suicide ideation (lifetime) in depressed patients who have never made an attempt. Depressed patients were divided on the basis of worst-point ideation to determine if these groups differed on a variety of clinical measures and neurocognitive tasks known to be associated …
The Efficacy Of Co-Taught And Dual-Certified Taught English Language Arts Instructional Models On English Language Learner Achievement, Stephanie L. Weeks
The Efficacy Of Co-Taught And Dual-Certified Taught English Language Arts Instructional Models On English Language Learner Achievement, Stephanie L. Weeks
Theses and Dissertations
There is limited research regarding the influence co-teaching and dual-certified instructional models have on English Language Learner (ELL) achievement in a high school setting. National and state data demonstrate these students continue to lag behind in meeting English Language Arts (ELA) learning standards with proficiency and in meeting graduation requirements leading to a rise in ELL drop-out rates. Through a convergent mixed methods case study, data was examined to identify the impacts these instructional models have on ELL academic achievement and teacher perspectives regarding each. Quantitative data and analysis were gathered via the June 2018 and June 2019 New York …
Comparison Of Language Performance Using Exposure And Non-Exposure Norms In English Learners Identified With Speech Language Impairment, Anna Tello
Theses and Dissertations
English Learners (ELs) in the U.S. have historically been misidentified as having a Speech Language Impairment (SLI). School psychologists and speech language pathologists must determine whether ELs present with language differences that are due to normal patterns of language acquisition or language impairment. Not only is the process complicated by the presence of two or more languages rather than just one, it often involves the use of standardized tests that do not control adequately for the differences in developmental language proficiency. Based on the results of this study, it was found that using tests that are developed with language exposure …
A Case Study Of Co-Teacher Relationships For English Language Learners In A Suburban Elementary School, Jaime Bottcher
A Case Study Of Co-Teacher Relationships For English Language Learners In A Suburban Elementary School, Jaime Bottcher
Theses and Dissertations
English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States are faced with many academic challenges including those of language acquisition, lack of background knowledge, fear of participation and unknown academic language. These challenges mixed with the ever-growing demands of the educational system, resulted in State and local educational agencies to make a distinct shift away from segregated instructional services for ELLs, by either requiring or recommending integrated co-teaching as an optimal way to educate them. Although a large number of teachers and administrators are unfamiliar with collaborative practices for ELLs, school districts have nonetheless implemented integrated co-teaching models to comply with …
