Social Workers' Perspectives Of Using Teletherapy To Foster Resilience Among Middle-Class Single Black Mothers, Yvonne Judge Jan 2026

Social Workers' Perspectives Of Using Teletherapy To Foster Resilience Among Middle-Class Single Black Mothers, Yvonne Judge

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Inadequate mental health support, particularly from social workers, disproportionately affects middle-class single Black mothers. Prior studies have examined low-income single mothers’ access to mental health care and the potential of teletherapy as a tool for improving access; however, few have explored how middle-class single Black mothers navigate mental health challenges. Further, there is a lack of research on social workers’ perspectives of using teletherapy to foster resilience among middle-class single Black mothers. This is a critical gap, as social workers play a key role in tailoring mental health interventions. The purpose of this study was to explore social workers’ perspectives …

Glossary-Augmented Generative Ai For Enterprise Translation, Tanmay Kayande, Deep Raithatha, Akash Dambhare, Pooja Agrawal, Mohith P Jan 2026

Glossary-Augmented Generative Ai For Enterprise Translation, Tanmay Kayande, Deep Raithatha, Akash Dambhare, Pooja Agrawal, Mohith P

Defensive Publications Series

Global enterprise operations can experience inefficiencies and service delays from language-siloed support queues, while generic machine translation tools may lack the context to handle enterprise-specific terminology. A system and method can facilitate multilingual communication by integrating a generative artificial intelligence model within enterprise workflow platforms, such as customer relationship management systems. The framework can programmatically retrieve a curated, enterprise-specific glossary and inject it into a translation prompt sent to the model. This technique grounds the model, instructing it to prioritize an organization's specific lexicon for a given translation. The approach can produce translations that are both linguistically fluent and terminologically …

Snap Removal And The Absurdity Doctrine, Michael M. Gallagher Jan 2026

Snap Removal And The Absurdity Doctrine, Michael M. Gallagher

University of Memphis Law Review

Snap removal, the “swift removal of a case before a forum defendant can be served,”1 is “the rare case in which it is as clear as anything ever can be that Congress did not mean what in strict letter it said.”2 There is no evidence that when the removal statutes were amended in 1948, Congress intended to allow forum defendants to remove a case before being served.3 Indeed, many courts have reached the opposite conclusion.4 Thus, allowing snap removal leads to absurd results.5 Some courts deem snap removal absurd.6 Three circuit courts, however, find this practice acceptable.7 Some scholars claim …

Constitutional Time: The Temporal Dimension Of Precedent In Consitutional Jurisprudence, Laura A. Cisneros Jan 2026

Constitutional Time: The Temporal Dimension Of Precedent In Consitutional Jurisprudence, Laura A. Cisneros

University of Memphis Law Review

The role of time in constitutional precedent lies at the heart of judicial decision making. While there is a consensus on the importance of precedent, the modalities of its application remain a subject of intense debate within legal circles. At the core of this discourse lies a fundamental tension: the imperative to maintain fidelity to established precedent, thereby ensuring legal stability and predictability, versus the necessity to re-evaluate and potentially overturn precedent in response to evolving societal norms or innovative constitutional interpretations. This dichotomy presents a fundamental challenge to the Supreme Court, requiring a delicate balance between continuity and adaptability …

Judicial Sanewashing: The Roberts Court's New Canon Of Construction, Erin M. Carr Jan 2026

Judicial Sanewashing: The Roberts Court's New Canon Of Construction, Erin M. Carr

University of Memphis Law Review

In late 2024, a new expression—“sanewashing”—began circulating in the lead-up to the presidential election. The term was used to describe the media’s coverage of Donald Trump, in which journalists, in their attempt to make his often incoherent campaign and media statements seem semi-intelligible, were accused of presenting his ideas as more sensible and cogent than they actually were. While finding its contemporary relevance primarily in politics, this Article argues that the sanewashing phenomenon is not limited to the political branches of government or the reporters who cover it. Instead, the Supreme Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice John Roberts, …

From Miso To Tray-C: The Impact Of Hedonic And Utilitarian Name Preference On Non-Humanoid Service Robots In Restaurants, Fatmah Almeer, Amit Sharma

ICHRIE Research Reports

Service robots are become common in the restaurant industry. Robot suppliers recommend business name such robots to increase the likelihood of their acceptance by employees and consumers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the preferences of robot names representing "Utilitarian" and "Hedonic" attributes. Our findings show that study respondents had a significantly stronger preference for hedonic names compared to utilitarian names. Names with hedonic attributes were perceived positively and were considered more trustworthy. The name identified through this study was adopted for the service robot at a hospitality management program in the United States. This report also provides …

From Prompt To Clone: Copyright Challenges In Ai Model Distillation, Claudia Philipp Jan 2026

From Prompt To Clone: Copyright Challenges In Ai Model Distillation, Claudia Philipp

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

This paper examines the legality of model distillation in the context of large language models (LLMs), where smaller “student” models are trained by mimicking the outputs of larger, proprietary “teacher” models. As artificial intelligence continues to advance rapidly, the legal framework surrounding patent, and contract law is being tested. Specifically, the paper explores whether current U.S. copyright law offers sufficient protection for frontier LLM developers and whether practices like unauthorized distillation amount to infringement. By analyzing model architecture, training data, behavioral mimicry, and reverse engineering under prevailing legal doctrines—including fair use, terms of use enforcement, and recent litigation—the paper finds …

Relational Healing: Survivors Of Sex Trafficking And Their Experiences Of Connection, Disconnection, And Growth, Claudia G. Interiano-Shiverdecker, Devon E. Romero, David J. Thompson, John J. J. S. Harrichand Jan 2026

Relational Healing: Survivors Of Sex Trafficking And Their Experiences Of Connection, Disconnection, And Growth, Claudia G. Interiano-Shiverdecker, Devon E. Romero, David J. Thompson, John J. J. S. Harrichand

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

In this interpretive phenomenological analysis, we interviewed 10 women to make meaning of their lived experiences of sex trafficking and mental health challenges and how relational dynamics influenced their healing and sense of self. Our analysis revealed four themes: (a) central relational paradox, which described internalized shame and mistrust due to relational ruptures as a result of trauma and inadequate trauma-informed care; (b) disconnection and disempowerment, attending to survivor protective withdrawal mechanisms and how counselor misattunement created cycles of disconnection and invalidation; (c) fluid expertise, where survivors emphasized that healing occurred when counselors embraced a collaborative, respectful stance, honoring client …

Simulated Intimacy, But Real Connection: Perceived Reciprocity And Romantic Closeness Make Otome Fun To Play, Nicholas Bowman, Elena Yifei Zhao Jan 2026

Simulated Intimacy, But Real Connection: Perceived Reciprocity And Romantic Closeness Make Otome Fun To Play, Nicholas Bowman, Elena Yifei Zhao

Media Studies - All Scholarship

Otome games offer players the opportunity to form romantic relationships with NPCs. Drawing on Social Exchange Theory, we proposed that, in the context of otome game, reciprocity enhances the sense of romantic closeness with NPCs, which in turn lead to greater enjoyment and appreciation. Survey data from 293 Chinese otome players supported the model, suggesting that at least one of the reasons that otome gaming is so entertaining is that they provide players with relationships that those players engage as if they were authentically social. Descriptive results revealed high reciprocity scores and strong romantic connection with NPCs, which players feeling …

Acoustic Analysis Of Prosodic Speech Pause In Autistic And Neurotypical Adults, Rachel Johnson Jan 2026

Acoustic Analysis Of Prosodic Speech Pause In Autistic And Neurotypical Adults, Rachel Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine prosodic speech pause across two groups: neurotypical and autistic young adults. Conversational speech samples were collected from 11 neurotypical and 11 autistic young adults between the ages of 18 and 26. Speech samples were subsequently transcribed and analyzed using Praat Software. The boundaries of between- and within-utterance pauses were identified, as well as acoustically determining if the pause was filled, silent, or a combination of both. Results found a significant difference in the frequency of pauses as a function of location, pause type, and neurological status. As expected, combination pauses were the …

Teaching Cross-Cultural Communication In Law School: Lessons From Medicine, Social Work, And Business, Mireille Butler, Jaclyn Celebrezze Jan 2026

Teaching Cross-Cultural Communication In Law School: Lessons From Medicine, Social Work, And Business, Mireille Butler, Jaclyn Celebrezze

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

Legal clients in the United States are increasingly multilingual and multicultural. More than 71 million people living in the United States communicate in a language other than English. Consequently, the lawyer’s duty of shared understanding is taking on new meaning. With the advent of ABA Ethics Opinion 500, cross-cultural communication skills are a lawyer’s ethical duty and a law school’s mandate. Additionally, ABA Standard 303(c) and the potential of increased experiential learning credit requirements make clear that immediate curricular changes are needed. To prepare for the modern practice of law, tomorrow’s lawyers need to develop cross-cultural skills while in law …

Ethics And Originalism, Michael L. Smith Jan 2026

Ethics And Originalism, Michael L. Smith

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

This Article addresses a blind spot in the theorizing and debate over originalist interpretation: the implications of rules of legal ethics. For the few originalist theorists who take the practical side of originalism seriously, attorneys’ rules of professional conduct are almost entirely absent from the discussion. These rules bind all attorneys who, in turn, construct the record, present the evidence, and make the arguments upon which judges and Justices rely. And these rules have profound, though mixed, implications for originalist theory. Some ethical duties—such as those requiring attorney competence and candor to the tribunal—might enhance the quality of originalist analysis …

An Eye For An Eye And A Smile For A Smile: Examining Aggressive And Supportive Behavioral Alignment Among Taiwanese Adolescence Who Play Video Games, Nicholas Bowman, Chrissy Cook, Chingching Chang Jan 2026

An Eye For An Eye And A Smile For A Smile: Examining Aggressive And Supportive Behavioral Alignment Among Taiwanese Adolescence Who Play Video Games, Nicholas Bowman, Chrissy Cook, Chingching Chang

Media Studies - All Scholarship

The social dynamics of video games, especially those played online, are one of the primary motivators for gaming. Unfortunately, while there are numerous benefits to online gaming, there is also potentially harmful toxic and aggressive behavior. Prior research has investigated toxicity, but most studies rely on convenience samples, typically from WEIRD populations. The current study extends this scholarship with a nationally representative sample of Taiwanese adolescents who are frequent gamers, (a) quantifying their experiences with aggressive and supportive behaviors in games and (b) investigating personological-level variables that might explain reciprocating (referred to as “behavioral alignment”). Key findings were (1) aggressive …

A Contextual Attention-Based Transformer Model For Enhanced Hate Speech Detection On Twitter, Mira Mansour, Nancy Akoum, Seifedine Kadry Jan 2026

A Contextual Attention-Based Transformer Model For Enhanced Hate Speech Detection On Twitter, Mira Mansour, Nancy Akoum, Seifedine Kadry

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Hate speech on social media poses significant societal challenges, necessitating accurate and context-sensitive automated detection. Traditional machine learning (ML) models typically rely on lexical or superficial features, limiting their ability to capture nuanced or contextually ambiguous expressions of hate speech. Recent transformer-based methods (e.g., RoBERTa) provide improved contextual understanding but often lack explicit mechanisms guiding the model’s attention to critical semantic tokens, thereby reducing interpretability and sensitivity to nuanced linguistic contexts. This paper introduces a novel contextual attention-guided transformer model that explicitly incorporates lexicon-guided attention supervision into RoBERTa fine-tuning, significantly enhancing semantic precision in hate speech detection on Twitter. Evaluations …

Novice Middle Grades Science Teacher Perspectives On Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices, Erica Danielle Benjamin Williams Jan 2026

Novice Middle Grades Science Teacher Perspectives On Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices, Erica Danielle Benjamin Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) bridges students’ cultural experiences with academic learning; however, novice science teachers often lack the preparation to apply it. This study addressed the problem that teachers without sufficient preparation to support culturally diverse learners are teaching middle grades science. Grounded in Freire’s critical consciousness and informed by Gay’s CRT principles, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of middle grades science teachers in their first 5 years of teaching regarding their use of CRT to plan and implement science lessons. Data from 12 semistructured interviews with novice middle grades science teachers were …

Perception Of Prosodic Speech Patterns Of Autistic Individuals, Rebecca Lunt Jan 2026

Perception Of Prosodic Speech Patterns Of Autistic Individuals, Rebecca Lunt

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the perception that neurotypical individuals have of autistic individuals’ speech, including their speech prosody. Speech samples were collected from four neurotypical and four autistic young adults as they answered interview questions. Then, 50 neurotypical listeners (28 female, 22 male) were recruited to listen to the speech samples and rate the speech on visual analogy scales on their likeability and ability to communicate. Participants were told prior to listening to the speech samples whether or not the speaker had autism; however, there were both deceptive and truthful listening conditions, with some autistic speakers …

Wei Xiqin’S Evolutionary Plan For Modern China, Nianhong Qiu Jan 2026

Wei Xiqin’S Evolutionary Plan For Modern China, Nianhong Qiu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This study examines the thinking, practices, and significance of Wei Xiqin (1882- 1952). Born in Germany and educated in various European countries, Wei was a musician and educator who played an active role in the educational reform of the Republic of China. Wei was equipped with modern European thoughts but held deep reverence for Confucianism and other traditional Chinese classics. Examining this contentious figure in the wake of “Chinese Evolutionism” trend, this study investigates the differences between Wei’s evolution theory and the dominant evolution theory during early 20th-century China. Wei’s evolutionism, which I call a type of “Cyclic Evolution,” implies …

The Black Mother-Daughter Developmental Model: A Life Course Framework For Understanding Matrescence, Identity, And Attachment In Black Family Systems, Brianna A. Baker

Publications and Research

This study introduces the Black Mother-Daughter Developmental Model (BMDDM), a life course framework that theorizes the evolving relational, psychological, and cultural dynamics of Black mother-daughter relationships across generations. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 18 Black women aged 18 to 65 and analyzed to examine patterns of attachment, identity development, rupture, and relational repair over time. Findings yielded a five-stage developmental model: (1) Black Matrescence and Prenatal Conditions, (2) Initial Attachment, (3) Separation and Detachment, (4) Negotiation and Reattachment, and (5) Matrescence Redux and Grandmatrescence. Across stages, participants described how gendered racial socialization, maternal …
