Language Acquisition In Bilingual Education And Full Immersion In English As A New Language Programs: An Explorative Case Study Of Three Elementary Schools, Rhonda Gracey Antoine Jan 2020

Language Acquisition In Bilingual Education And Full Immersion In English As A New Language Programs: An Explorative Case Study Of Three Elementary Schools, Rhonda Gracey Antoine

Theses and Dissertations

With a growing English Language Learners (ELL) population in New York State (NYS), schools need to investigate best practices to serve this population. Based on a NYS Regulation, CR 154-2, districts with 20 or more ELL students who speak the same language at any given grade level should provide bilingual education (BE) all day, while districts with fewer than 20 students who speak the same home language at any given grade level may take English as a New Language (ENL) classes all day. Bilingual classes, where instruction is provided in a mix of English and the students’ home language, typically …

Murmuring Met With Mercy And Grace: An Examination Of The Pre-Sinai Wilderness Wanderings Traditions, Anna Rask Jan 2020

Murmuring Met With Mercy And Grace: An Examination Of The Pre-Sinai Wilderness Wanderings Traditions, Anna Rask

Master of Theology Theses

While various OT and NT authors may employ the wilderness wanderings traditions for their own purposes, the traditions themselves generally present the Israelites in a negative light. This negative presentation is primarily due to the murmuring motif. This essay revealed the stereotyped verbs and collocations of the motif in addition to the variety of forms the murmurings can take, a prominent form being an accusatory question. When the stereotyped verbs and collocations do not occur, it is the presence of an accusatory question with stereotypical content and language regarding the Israelites’ life in Egypt and their exodus that signals the …

The Reflective Preacher: Effective Habits For Homiletical Self-Assessment, Brenda Froberg Legred Jan 2020

The Reflective Preacher: Effective Habits For Homiletical Self-Assessment, Brenda Froberg Legred

Doctor of Ministry Theses

Biblical preaching is the key to church growth and health. Research shows that people are choosing not to worship because of mediocre messages from the pulpit. Yet, people are hungry for what God has to say about their life and context. The pastor-preacher must take the preaching task very seriously, devoting time and energy to the endeavor and seeking to continually improve their craft. The problem is that most pastors do not develop effective habits for homiletical self-assessment. This researcher will offer strategies and tools for faithful preaching and ideas for becoming a more reflective preacher. There are acquired skills …

Liberated For Mission: Theology Of The Cross Informing A Fresh Missional Imagination, Pamela M. Marolla

Doctor of Ministry Theses

“How might an action research intervention cultivate a hermeneutic of missio Dei as it relates to baptismal vocation?” This study used mixed methods action research including interventions, questionnaires, Dwelling in the Word, and interviews. Biblical and theological lenses were God’s liberating nature, baptismal vocation, theology of the cross, missio Dei and more. Theoretical lenses were leadership theories, strengths, assets, hospitality, and imaginative interaction. Interventions were a sermon series, dwelling in the word, and contextual leadership. Through these the congregation gained understanding of the liberating nature of God through prophecy, reconciliation, being known, and their own place in missio Dei.

Teachers’ Beliefs About English Learners: Adding Linguistic Support To Enhance Academic Rigor, Audrey Figueroa Murphy Jan 2020

Teachers’ Beliefs About English Learners: Adding Linguistic Support To Enhance Academic Rigor, Audrey Figueroa Murphy

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

A persistent achievement gap for English learners (ELs) has prompted educators to search for contributing factors and pedagogical solutions. Our research shows teachers’ beliefs about rigor of curriculum may contribute to the problem; teachers supported less rigorous curriculum for ELs, evincing a “rigor gap” likely to exacerbate the EL achievement gap. We suggest that systematic analysis of the linguistic demands of classroom tasks can facilitate the design of appropriate linguistic supports, allowing ELs to engage in academically rigorous instruction comparable to that afforded English-proficient students. Counteracting the rigor gap as such has promise to ameliorate the EL achievement gap.

Family And Family-Like Relations For Transnational Migrants: Ideals Of Care Informed By Kin, Non-Family, And Religion, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2020

Family And Family-Like Relations For Transnational Migrants: Ideals Of Care Informed By Kin, Non-Family, And Religion, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

Studies of transnational family formation and care relationships suggest that, while family forms and care values are idealized, they are also negotiated, enacted, and fluid constructs. Strategies of resilience and mechanisms of flexible care achieved by transnational families are fine-tuned under multiple influences. Among these influences are well-known sources such as social networks, as well as less well-understood sources such as religious teachings. We report findings of a 4-month, ethnographic study among Latinx immigrants to the U.S. whose (n = 14) narratives of family “care” reflect their ideals and simultaneously work to linguistically produce role continuity. Thematic results address …

The Story Of Property: Meditations On Gentrification, Renaming, And Possibility, Rachel Brahinsky Jan 2020

The Story Of Property: Meditations On Gentrification, Renaming, And Possibility, Rachel Brahinsky

Politics

Property is a story. We assign land and resources legal status, and we narrate this as ownership and power. The interlocking loans, credit, and debt from which housing markets are compiled are built through narratives about value and its origins. The urban landscape, which is made by those markets, is produced through a confluence of human decisions, made with information about conditions and access. This information is based in stories—stories about what will sell, whether risk is viable, and what constitutes risk itself. These interlocking stories produce processes such as gentrification, one of the key contemporary challenges of booming cities …

Hybrid Place: A Reading Of Cuetzalan, Mexico, Tanu Sankalia Jan 2020

Hybrid Place: A Reading Of Cuetzalan, Mexico, Tanu Sankalia

Environmental Science

This essay explores the idea of cultural hybridity in the hill town of Cuetzalan, Mexico. It focuses on two entities within the town: the tianguis, or informal Sunday market, and the Santuario de Guadalupe, also known as the Iglesia de los Jarritos, or “Church of the Clay Pots.” Hybridity, the essay shows, is not a facile outcome of the intermingling of different cultures, but the result of historical political struggle — in this case between the indigenous Nahua Indian population and the mestizos who moved to the Sierra Norte de Puebla during the nineteenth century. I conclude that by embodying …

Linguistic Politeness In The Chinese Language And Culture, Horng-Yi Lee Jan 2020

Linguistic Politeness In The Chinese Language And Culture, Horng-Yi Lee

Modern Languages

This paper aims to explore the cultural foundations of polite speech and analyze its usage and practice in modern Chinese. A language mirrors the culture it is associated with. Grounded in the Chinese tradition and the teachings of Confucianism, the emphasis on rites, propriety and humility led to the development of polite language from the early imperial time. Because of the absence of related syntactic features, Chinese linguistic politeness is predominantly manifested on the lexical level. A rich array of decorous terms and expressions has been evolved accordingly to express courtesy or respect either verbally or in formal writing. In …

Exploring Pattern Mining Algorithms For Hashtag Retrieval Problem, Asma Belhadi, Youcef Djenouri, Jerry Chun-Wei Lin, Chongsheng Zhang, Alberto Cano

Computer Science Publications

Hashtag is an iconic feature to retrieve the hot topics of discussion on Twitter or other social networks. This paper incorporates the pattern mining approaches to improve the accuracy of retrieving the relevant information and speeding up the search performance. A novel algorithm called PM-HR (Pattern Mining for Hashtag Retrieval) is designed to first transform the set of tweets into a transactional database by considering two different strategies (trivial and temporal). After that, the set of the relevant patterns is discovered, and then used as a knowledge-based system for finding the relevant tweets based on users' queries under the similarity …

Cockney Dialect Group Report, Trent Garlin Jan 2020

Cockney Dialect Group Report, Trent Garlin

English Department: Linguistics ENG 334

When many people think of a British accent two distinct types typically come to mind, an overly posh royal family type accent, or an Oliver Twist Cockney accent. However, the Cockney dialect is a lot more complicated and interesting than simply dropping the ‘h’ and ‘t’ from the English language, and this report will explore the history of the dialect as well as the phonology, the morphology and its syntax.

Community Engagement Through Interactive Field-Based Activities, Carolyn Casale, C. Adrainne Thomas

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

This qualitative case study consisted of social justice interactive field-based experiential learning activities designed to understand community partnerships between a university and local public school. The research question was: How can interactive field-based activities build closer community ties? The theoretical foundation incorporated Ken Zeichner’s “hybrid spaces” with the premise of field-based interactive experiences. The findings indicated the need for further activities that create partnerships between teacher education programs and neighboring public schools.

Interpretability Of Api Call Topic Models: An Exploratory Study, Puntitra Glendowne, Dae Glendowne

Faculty Publications

Topic modeling is an unsupervised method for discovering semantically coherent combinations of words, called topics, in unstructured text. However, the human interpretability of topics discovered from non-natural language corpora, specifically Windows API call logs, is unknown. Our objective is to explore the coherence of topics and their ability to represent the themes of API calls from malware analysts’ perspective. Three Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) models were fit to a collection of dynamic API call logs. Topics, or behavioral themes, were manually evaluated by malware analysts. The results were compared to existing automated quality measures. Participants were able to accurately determine …
