Positive And Negative Uses Of The Exodus Motif In Prophetic And Apocalyptic Biblical Literature, Charles Joshua Parrott Jul 2020

Positive And Negative Uses Of The Exodus Motif In Prophetic And Apocalyptic Biblical Literature, Charles Joshua Parrott

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In the following pages of this dissertation, I address two questions: 1) How do biblical authors reuse the exodus motif in positive and negative ways? 2) What does theological reflection on these uses yield? In Chapter One, we will see that the historical exodus is not only contextually plausible, but it is also particularly doctrinal. The exodus reveals noteworthy truths for God’s people today, and these truths need to be continually affirmed. Chapter Two shows that collectively, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel had an understanding of Israelite history, and they trusted God’s sovereign control of that history. These prophets also had …

The Lived Experiences Of High School Students Who Self-Identify As Readers: A Phenomenological Study, Michael J. Romick Jul 2020

The Lived Experiences Of High School Students Who Self-Identify As Readers: A Phenomenological Study, Michael J. Romick

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and better understand the lived experiences of what it means to be a reader as a high school student. The literature revealed a plethora of studies and articles on various aspects of reading and many pieces from teachers, researchers, and academics’ perspectives, but there are virtually no studies that have explored what being a reader means from the high school reader’s perspective; no studies that have explored the lived experiences of what being a reader means to high school students. The central question guiding this study asked, “What is the lived …

How To Fight Like A Poet: The Socially Engaged Poetics Of Anti-Colonialism In Appalachia., Grace A Rogers Jul 2020

How To Fight Like A Poet: The Socially Engaged Poetics Of Anti-Colonialism In Appalachia., Grace A Rogers

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Colonialism has played a large and complicated part in the history of Appalachia. Upon European contact, almost all Indigenous people were violently removed from the region along with the cultural, agricultural, and linguistic traditions they cultivated in the mountains. The white colonizers who stole the lands were then economically exploited by the wealthier colonizers to the North and East. In light of the complex dynamics of language, place, and exploitation in the Appalachian Mountains, poetry shows promise as a means of linguistic resistance as well as an intellectual and archival practice that might lead to better understanding the multi-dimensional history …

Sound Discrimination And Explicit Mapping Of Sounds To Meanings In Preschoolers With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Carolyn Quam, Holly Cardinal, Celeste Gallegos, Todd Bodner

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose: To investigate links between sound discrimination and explicit sound-meaning mapping by preschoolers with and without developmental language disorder (DLD).

Method: We tested 26 children with DLD and 26 age- and gender-matched peers with typical language development (TLD). Inclusion was determined via results of standardised assessments of language and cognitive skills and a hearing screening. Children completed two computerised tasks designed to assess pitch and duration discrimination and explicit mapping of pitch- and duration-contrasting sounds to objects.

Result: Children with TLD more successfully mapped pitch categories to meanings than children with DLD. Children with TLD also showed significantly better overall …

A Content-Integrated Translingual Literature Curriculum For Chinese-Speaking University-Level Efl Learners, Croix Clayton Jul 2020

A Content-Integrated Translingual Literature Curriculum For Chinese-Speaking University-Level Efl Learners, Croix Clayton

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper was to outline a new translingual model of post-secondary EFL curriculum for Chinese-speaking English language learners. The curricular guide presents a content-integrated literature syllabus aimed at building competence in both communicative and critical-creative domains. A translingual coursework, which may involve code-switching, translanguaging, translation in language teaching (TILT), and World Englishes contact literature, is argued to uniquely benefit Chinese-speaking EFL learners on the road toward English and higher-order thinking competence. The curriculum utilizes the Tang-era poetry of Du Fu, and the modern prose of Ha Jin as content for lessons on the English article system, phrasal …

Monitoring Program Effectiveness & Educational Outcomes For Minority-Language Students In Two-Way Spanish Immersion Programs, Jessica Wallace Neukirch Jul 2020

Monitoring Program Effectiveness & Educational Outcomes For Minority-Language Students In Two-Way Spanish Immersion Programs, Jessica Wallace Neukirch

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Two-way Immersion (TWI) provides the most equitable educational outcomes for minority-language learners (Marian, Shook & Shroeder, 2013; Thomas & Collier, 2012). Due to the continued achievement gap between White and Latinx students in the United States (NAEP, 2019), this research study addresses how school districts and/or individual immersion sites monitor program effectiveness and fidelity of implementation to ensure equitable educational outcomes for minority-language learners. First, the characteristics of well implemented TWI programs are outlined along with effective monitoring tools for monitoring program effectiveness and fidelity of TWI implementation. Data show that TWI programs inconsistently monitor TWI implementation especially in the …

Audio-Visual Caption Evaluation Metric For People Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Akhter Al Amin Jul 2020

Audio-Visual Caption Evaluation Metric For People Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Akhter Al Amin

Articles

While the availability of captioned television programming has increased, the quality of this captioning is not always acceptable to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) viewers, especially for live or unscripted content, broadcast from local television stations, especially in smaller markets. There is a need for formal metrics to evaluate captioning quality, to enable audits or quality assurance. Although some current caption metrics focus on comparing the textual accuracy (comparing the caption text and accurate transcription of what was spoken), there are other properties of captions that may affect quality or usability judgments. We propose to conduct experiments with DHH …

Chevron As Construction, Lawrence B. Solum, Cass R. Sunstein Jul 2020

Chevron As Construction, Lawrence B. Solum, Cass R. Sunstein

Faculty Scholarship

In 1984, the Supreme Court declared that courts should uphold agency interpretations of ambiguous statutory provisions, so long as those interpretations are reasonable. The Chevron framework, as it is called, is now under serious pressure. Current debates can be both illuminated and softened with reference to an old distinction between interpretation on the one hand and construction on the other. In cases of interpretation, judges (or agencies) must ascertain the meaning of a statutory term. In cases of construction, judges (or agencies) must develop implementing principles or specify a statutory term. In cases that involve statutory construction, the argument on …

Flowing With The Translanguaging Corriente: Juntos Engaging With And Making Sense Of Mathematics, Luz A. Maldonado Rodríguez, Gladys Krause, Melissa Adams Corral Jul 2020

Flowing With The Translanguaging Corriente: Juntos Engaging With And Making Sense Of Mathematics, Luz A. Maldonado Rodríguez, Gladys Krause, Melissa Adams Corral

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The translanguaging corriente, or current of language practices, as described by García et al. (2017), is always flowing through your mathematics classroom, whether you realize it or not. The corriente, how multilinguals use all their languages to learn and engage with content in school and make sense of a complex world, requires educators to reconsider what is understood about language and mathematics. By rethinking how we view language separation in the multilingual mathematics classroom, we propose that teachers teach with a translanguaging stance in order to access multilingual students’ full linguistic repertoires and to develop deep mathematical understanding.

Conceptualizing Culture How Preservice Teachers In The Rural Midwest Confront Subjectivities, Anne Karabon, Kelly Gomez Johnson

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

This qualitative study examined how elementary and secondary preservice teachers in the rural Midwest conceptualize “culture” and how preservice teachers’ subjectivities and conceptions of culture shape their pedagogical practices. Thirty-six preservice teachers participated in a course on effective planning designed to address topics such as special education, English language learners, race, those living in difficult circumstances, and gender representation. Results reveal that despite exposure to reflections and discussions on privilege and hegemony to confront biases and deficit perspectives, ethnocentrism persisted.

Partners, Not Adversaries: Higher Education And Diverse Schools, Edmund T. Hamann Jul 2020

Partners, Not Adversaries: Higher Education And Diverse Schools, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Often education researchers enter schools only to depict inequity and weak practice, but the same empirical skills that illuminate challenges can, under a different premise, illuminate excellence. This chapter describes how graduate students enrolled in an “Effecting High School Improvement” course helped a diverse public high school document its excellence and win National Education Policy Center (NEPC) recognition as a 'School of Opportunity'. Although this case is unique in specific detail, other school/higher education partnerships could clearly function like this one did. Good schools may not have staff to document their multifaceted responsiveness to diverse enrollments, but, with university assistance, …

Identifying Facets Of Reader-Generated Online Reviews Of Children’S Books Based On A Textual Analysis Approach, Yunseon Choi, Soohyung Joo

Information Science Faculty Publications

With the increasing popularity of social media, online reviews have become one of the primary information sources for book selection. Prior studies have analyzed online reviews, mostly in the domain of business. However, little research has examined the content of online book reviews of children’s books. Book reviews generated by book readers contain different aspects of information, such as opinions, feedback, or emotional responses, from the perspectives of readers. This study explores what aspects of the books are addressed in readers’ reviews, and then it intends to identify categorical features or facets of online book reviews of children’s books. We …

Recruiting For The Future: A Realistic Road To A Points-Tested Visa Program In The United States, Stephen W. Yale-Loehr, Mackenzie Eason

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

For over 40 years, lawmakers and academics have been debating whether the United States should adopt a merit-or skills-based approach to labor immigration and a points-based program for selecting foreign workers. Despite having bipartisan support, efforts to adopt such a program thus far have been unsuccessful.

This idea is now back at the center of public debate, having been given new life by President Trump. He has called for “merit-based” immigration reforms that would make the United States more effective at attracting the world’s “best and brightest” and make it more competitive in the global marketplace for highly skilled foreign …

Case Studies: Us-Japan Comparison Of Attachment Transmission, Kazuko Y. Behrens, Karen Jones-Mason Jul 2020

Case Studies: Us-Japan Comparison Of Attachment Transmission, Kazuko Y. Behrens, Karen Jones-Mason

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Today, attachment research has become increasingly more quantitative and complex, utilizing extremely sophisticated statistical analyses often based on enormous synthesized datasets across the globe (Verhage et al., 2016). This marks a significant advancement in the attachment field in particular and developmental fields in general. However, this phenomenon arguably restricts the ability to visualize interactions of each parent-child dyad, on which the relationship quality is assessed. Notably, the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP) are the most validated, widely-used attachment measures world-wide, known to predict attachment transmission. This paper demonstrates the qualitative presentation of attachment transmission data, …

Multinational Bibliography On Acculturation (1808-2020), With Url Links To Abstracts Or Full-Text, Joaquim Castro, Floyd W. Rudmin

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Acculturation is an ancient topic of scholarship, with ever more interest and importance as migration increases on a global scale. The pace of scholarship has accelerated in the past few decades, with the result that earlier scholarship tends to be lost and recent scholarship is often unfound. The following bibliography is intended to help remedy these kinds of problems. This 2020 revision of Rudmin’s 2011 bibliography has almost 8,300 references, including much of the acculturation literature written in Portuguese, French, and Spanish.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In biometrics, methods which are able to precisely adapt to the biometric features of users are much sought after. They use various methods of artificial intelligence, in particular methods from the group of soft computing. In this paper, we focus on on-line signature verification. Such signatures are complex objects described not only by the shape but also by the dynamics of the signing process. In standard devices used for signature acquisition (with an LCD touch screen) this dynamics may include pen velocity, but sometimes other types of signals are also available, e.g. pen pressure on the screen surface (e.g. in …

July 2020: Revival Of The Social Sciences, Gardner-Webb University

President William Downs' Blog

In this month’s blog, I’m not going to mention COVID-19, Coronavirus, pandemics, face coverings, vaccines, or even social distancing. Indulge me…there are other pressing issues.

As the infamous year 2020 lurches forward, we should take note of what’s going on across our nation. There’s hurt, frustration, and anger in the streets of some of our largest cities. There’s widespread reconsideration of the nation’s history and of some of its principal players. There’s a highly polarized national election looming on the near horizon. Superimposed upon all of these strains are economic volatility and uncertainty. We see the economic fallout of 2020’s …

Evidence-Based Medicine Databases: An Overview, Viji Pulikkel Chandran, Sohil Khan, Girish Pai Kulyadi, Kanav Khera

Open Access archive

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) helps to bridge the gap between current healthcare practice and recent research findings in health care. Today's era of scientific information explosion makes hard for healthcare providers to remain up to date on the best clinical practices. In reality, a physician has to read 17 scientific literature works per day to remain up to date. This is a difficult challenge, but EBM databases provide quick access to research findings. This review aims to provide an overview of EBM databases. These databases provide information about guidelines, disease, treatment, diagnosis, clinical relevance, systematic reviews, clinical trials, observational studies, preappraised …

Social Studies Teachers’ Successes And Challenges In Creating Race-Conscious Curriculum, Emma Nicosia

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the ways that social studies teachers enact racial literacy in order to center race in their curriculum. The study is situated within the existing literature of culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, critical race theory and their applications in social studies education, and racial literacy. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the study is grounded in critical race theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001). Six teachers and two curriculum administrators in a single school district were interviewed. Additionally, participant-observations and analyses of teachers’ curricular materials occurred. In order to analyze the data, I inductively put several theories relating …

Parental Communication Patterns And The Impact On Young Children, Janice Ringstaff Jul 2020

Parental Communication Patterns And The Impact On Young Children, Janice Ringstaff

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages. Such messages may impact an individual’s overall functioning across the lifespan. Parents are usually the first source of information exchange for children. The Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), originally published in 1976, is an education program that teaches positive parenting and effective communication strategies. STEP encourages parents to embrace concepts of mutual respect and equality while creating opportunities for parents to meet the demands of raising children. There is limited data assessing parental change in communication patterns among parents of young school-aged children following systematic training. Twelve parents with children …

Empirical Analysis Of Cbow And Skip Gram Nlp Models, Tejas Menon Jul 2020

Empirical Analysis Of Cbow And Skip Gram Nlp Models, Tejas Menon

University Honors Theses

CBOW and Skip Gram are two NLP techniques to produce word embedding models that are accurate and performant. They were invented in the seminal paper by T. Mikolov et al. and have since observed optimizations such as negative sampling and subsampling. This paper implements a fully-optimized version of these models using Py-Torch and runs them through a toy sentiment/subject analysis. It is weakly observed that different corpus types affect the skew of word embeddings such that fictional corpus are better suited for sentiment analysis and non-fictional for subject analysis.

Automatic Keyphrase Extraction From Russian-Language Scholarly Papers In Computational Linguistics, Yves Wienecke Jul 2020

Automatic Keyphrase Extraction From Russian-Language Scholarly Papers In Computational Linguistics, Yves Wienecke

University Honors Theses

The automatic extraction of keyphrases from scholarly papers is a necessary step for many Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, including text retrieval, machine translation, and text summarization. However, due to the different grammatical and semantic intricacies of languages, this is a highly language-dependent task. Many free and open source implementations of state-of-the-art keyphrase extraction techniques exist, but they are not adapted for processing Russian text. Furthermore, the multi-linguistic character of scholarly papers in the field of Russian computational linguistics and NLP introduces additional complexity to keyphrase extraction. This paper describes a free and open source program as a proof of …
