A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Life Satisfaction Amongst African Immigrants In Hamilton, Canada, Boadi Agyekum Jul 2020

A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Life Satisfaction Amongst African Immigrants In Hamilton, Canada, Boadi Agyekum

Societies Without Borders

Many minority immigrants currently face severe human rights violation through discrimination and racism, influencing how they rate their life satisfaction in their host destinations. This paper examines the factors that affect African immigrants’ life satisfaction in a mid-sized Canadian city. Using a combination of descriptive and multivariate methods applied on a sample survey (n=236) conducted in Hamilton, Ontario, this article investigates socio-demographic and health-related factors that predict life satisfaction amongst African immigrants, specifically, Ghanaians and Somalis. Findings suggest that Ghanaian immigrants reported greater life satisfaction than their Somali counterparts. People with residency in Canada over 10 years are more likely …

Multicultural Education And Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Field Placements: Influence On Pre-Service Teacher Perceptions, Jerae Hutchison Kelly Jul 2020

Multicultural Education And Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Field Placements: Influence On Pre-Service Teacher Perceptions, Jerae Hutchison Kelly

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

As public school student demographics continue to diversify, the employment of multicultural education pedagogy in special education becomes ever more critical. Multicultural education pedagogy supports the placement of special education pre-service teachers (SEPSTs) in culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) field placements; yet scholars warn field placements have the potential to reinforce deficit-centered perceptions. Therefore, this pilot study sought to examine SEPSTs perceptions of students who are CLD and their educational needs in response to placement in CLD field experience through interviews with three SEPSTs in one teacher preparation program (TPP). Findings align with previous work in the field, underscoring the …

English Language Learning Professional Development For K-12 Teachers, Kristen M. Fober Jul 2020

English Language Learning Professional Development For K-12 Teachers, Kristen M. Fober

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

In response to the growing population of English language learners (ELLs) in a school district in rural Iowa, professional development (PD) has been developed as a school improvement plan to help teachers learn how to meet the needs of this population. This plan has been developed based on a robust review of current literature on strategies to support ELL students. The school improvement plan includes a pre-survey, six 1-hour sessions of PD plans, PD resources (such as handouts and slides), and a post-survey. The intended outcome of the PD is for teachers to feel more prepared to work with ELLs …

Culture, Language And Emotion, Alexandra S. Dylman, Marie-France Champoux-Larsson, Ingrid Zakrisson Jul 2020

Culture, Language And Emotion, Alexandra S. Dylman, Marie-France Champoux-Larsson, Ingrid Zakrisson

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Culture, language and emotion all influence and affect our daily lives in their own manner. Although there is a large body of research suggesting that these factors interact with each other in intricate ways, they have traditionally been studied independently of each other. Furthermore, although biculturalism and bilingualism are not new phenomena, they are now prevalent globally to the extent that research investigating culture or language cannot be complete without taking them into account. Thus, in this paper, we discuss how culture, language and emotion may mutually influence one another in a globalized world where biculturalism and bilingualism are commonplace …

The Nephite Prophets’ Understanding Of Faith And Faithfulness, Noel B. Reynolds Jul 2020

The Nephite Prophets’ Understanding Of Faith And Faithfulness, Noel B. Reynolds

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Readers of the Book of Mormon agree that faith in Jesus Christ is a basic principle of the gospel, or doctrine of Christ, taught therein. And they agree, at least superficially, on the meaning of the word faith to the extent that is allowed by their modern, westernized worldview and background in New Testament Christianity. However, as I engaged in an in-depth study of the gospel of Jesus Christ as the Nephites understood it, I realized that (1) our modern cultural understandings shield us from those of the Nephite prophets in many ways, (2) the Nephite concept of faith is …

Learning Word Groundings From Humans Facilitated By Robot Emotional Displays, David Mcneill, Casey Kennington Jul 2020

Learning Word Groundings From Humans Facilitated By Robot Emotional Displays, David Mcneill, Casey Kennington

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In working towards accomplishing a human-level acquisition and understanding of language, a robot must meet two requirements: the ability to learn words from interactions with its physical environment, and the ability to learn language from people in settings for language use, such as spoken dialogue. In a live interactive study, we test the hypothesis that emotional displays are a viable solution to the cold-start problem of how to communicate without relying on language the robot does not–indeed, cannot–yet know. We explain our modular system that can autonomously learn word groundings through interaction and show through a user study with 21 …

American Muslim Women: Who We Are And What We Demand From Feminist Jurisprudence, Mehwish Shaukat Jul 2020

American Muslim Women: Who We Are And What We Demand From Feminist Jurisprudence, Mehwish Shaukat

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

It is time for feminist jurisprudence to recognize American Muslim women (AMW) as a distinct and agentic group. For too long, feminist discourse has victimized and objectified Muslim women. Our identities are constructed, deconstructed, and weaponized to suit third party needs; yet, our voices are rarely heard. When feminist legal theories singularly refer to Muslim women in relation to oppression, it harms Muslim women as a group and it attacks the very ethos of the discipline itself. Legal academia trains students to actively interrogate assumptions, but, it curiously treats the oppressed Muslim woman as an irrefutable reality. There is a …

Between The Bear And The Dragon: Multivectorism In Kazakhstan As A Model Strategy For Secondary Powers, Rachel Vanderhill, Sandra F. Joireman, Roza Tulepbayeva Jul 2020

Between The Bear And The Dragon: Multivectorism In Kazakhstan As A Model Strategy For Secondary Powers, Rachel Vanderhill, Sandra F. Joireman, Roza Tulepbayeva

Political Science Faculty Publications

Kazakhstan has followed a foreign policy of multivector diplomacy since its independence from the former Soviet Union. While multivectorism was a strategy of necessity in its early years, it has evolved to empower Kazakhstan to effectively protect its independence and negotiate its relationship with the great powers on its borders and further afield. After the 2014 Russian seizure of Crimea it is noteworthy that Kazakhstan has maintained positive relations with Russia while asserting its sovereignty and independent foreign policy. In this article we investigate how Kazakhstan has negotiated the rise of China, taking advantage of the economic opportunities it presents. …

Going Through The Motions: Participation In Interpreter-Mediated Meeting Interaction Under A Deaf And A Hearing Chairperson, Rosie Henley, Rachel Mckee Jul 2020

Going Through The Motions: Participation In Interpreter-Mediated Meeting Interaction Under A Deaf And A Hearing Chairperson, Rosie Henley, Rachel Mckee

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In multiparty meetings involving deaf and hearing participants, sign language interpreters are tasked to render talk ‘accessible’ to all by mediating differences across languages, modalities, interactional norms, and cultural statuses (Roy, 1989, 1993; Mindess, 1999; Van Herreweghe, 2002). Although this context of work is relatively common for interpreters, their practices and the interactional outcomes for participants are under-researched. This case study compares chairing and meeting practices under a deaf chairperson and a hearing chairperson, respectively. The impact of chairing on interpretability and deaf participation are discussed. An interactional sociolinguistics framework informs analysis of meeting data and retrospective participant interviews. Analysis …

Toward Standard Interpreter Education Program Admission Criteria, Marc Holmes Jul 2020

Toward Standard Interpreter Education Program Admission Criteria, Marc Holmes

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In the United States, signed language interpreter education programs (IEPs) must strike a balance between attracting a sufficient number of students and admitting only high-quality applicants who possess foundational language skills, can graduate in a timely manner and acquire professional credentials expediently. The Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (2014) asserts that all students entering U.S. IEPs should have strong language skills in both American Sign Language(ASL)and English before beginning to acquire interpreting skills. One way to measure a student’s readiness to enter a program of instruction is through the use of admission criteria. I examined online documents and surveyed52 baccalaureate-granting IEPs in …

An Achilles’ Heel? Helping Interpreting Students Gain Greater Awareness Of Literal And Idiomatic English, Ineke Crezee, Lynn E. Grant Jul 2020

An Achilles’ Heel? Helping Interpreting Students Gain Greater Awareness Of Literal And Idiomatic English, Ineke Crezee, Lynn E. Grant

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This research paper reports on a study involving the use of literal and non-literal or idiomatic language in a multilingual interpreter classroom. Previous research has shown that interpreters are not always able to identify and correctly interpret idiomatic language. This study first examined student interpreters’ perceptions of the importance of idiomatic language, then followed by assessing their ability to identify phrases that were literal, idiomatic or both. Lastly it looked at student interpreters’ ability to correctly identify and explain idioms in short phrases and dialogues. Findings showed that, after this exercise, students' awareness of the difference between literal and non-literal …

Spoken Language Interpreters Andsigned Language Interpreters: Towards Cross-Fertilization, Daniel Gile, Jemina M. Napier Jul 2020

Spoken Language Interpreters Andsigned Language Interpreters: Towards Cross-Fertilization, Daniel Gile, Jemina M. Napier

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This commentary aims to give an overview of developments in the related fields of spoken and signed language interpreting, with consideration given to professionalization, standards, education and training, and research. We base our discussion on our observations of the changing nature of the sister professions over the years, as the two related fields become more closely aligned. We propose that spoken and signed language interpreters can work more closely together to promote more cross-fertilization in interpreting studies.

Making It Work: Applying Aiic Professional Standards To Conference Signedlanguage Interpreters, Maya De Wit Jul 2020

Making It Work: Applying Aiic Professional Standards To Conference Signedlanguage Interpreters, Maya De Wit

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Conference interpreters, signed and spoken, work in a wide range of high-level settings, from international summits with (non)governmental bodies to politically-oriented networking events. Considering that such settings require advanced expertise of the interpreters, it is surprising that there is still a lack of awareness among clients and interpreters of the fundamental professional standards of conference signed language interpreters. This article discusses the need to educate and raise awareness among signed language interpreters and their clients regarding the rights to demand, respectively, good working conditions and linguistic access.

Using Spoken Dialogue Technology For L2 Speaking Practice: What Do Teachers Think?, Veronika Timpe-Laughlin, Tetyana Sydorenko, Phoebe Daurio

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Often, second/foreign (L2) language learners receive little opportunity to interact orally in the target language. Interactive, conversation-based spoken dialog systems (SDSs) that use automated speech recognition and natural language processing have the potential to address this need by engaging learners in meaningful, goal-oriented speaking practice. However, these technology-based learning tools are often developed without input from teaching professionals. As part of a larger development effort, this study examined English as a second language (ESL) teachers’ perceptions regarding SDS-based speaking tasks, addressing the following research questions: (a) What do teachers think about the SDS-based tasks? (b) How would they use them …

Using The Technology Acceptance Model To Analyze K–12 Students’ Behavioral Intention To Use Augmented Reality In Learning, Lei Ping, Yan Liu Jul 2020

Using The Technology Acceptance Model To Analyze K–12 Students’ Behavioral Intention To Use Augmented Reality In Learning, Lei Ping, Yan Liu

Teaching and Learning Faculty Research

Augmented reality (AR) has gained popularity in K-12 education in the past decades; researchers and educators generally agree that AR is a useful pedagogical tool in teaching because it is grounded on efficient teaching and learning models such as constructivist learning, situated learning, and inquiry-based learning. Research on AR in the K-12 context tends to focus on its impact on learning processes and outcomes. However, it is essential to understand K-12 students’ behavioral intentions of use for AR—their perceptions of usefulness, ease of use, and enjoyment—so that teachers can better design and integrate AR-based learning into their courses. Guided by …

“Speak Truth To Power Ourselves”: Teaching Social Justice In A Teacher Residency Program, Jori S. Beck Jul 2020

“Speak Truth To Power Ourselves”: Teaching Social Justice In A Teacher Residency Program, Jori S. Beck

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

The current study is part of a larger case study of faculty and staff methods at a teacher residency program. Teacher residencies, which were founded in the early 2000s, have an explicit mission of serving historically marginalized populations. However, more research is needed to better understand how these programs implement social justice teacher education. Indeed, there is a dearth of literature regarding the application of social justice practices in teacher education and the social justice beliefs of teacher educators. The interviews, documents, and observations collected for this study revealed a robust theme of social justice in participants’ beliefs and their …

Exploring Response To Intervention: How Are We Narrowing The Gap For Tier 3 Minority Learners?, Kristi Baker

Teaching and Learning Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to 1) analyze the relationship between RTI tier of intervention, minority status, and reading growth and 2) explore school level factors that might explain differential growth of minority students in Tier 3 relative to their peers. I used the lens of Critical Race Theory in Education to explore the reading growth of minority students in Tier 3 relative to their peers which included non-minority students in Tier 3 as well as minority and non-minority students in Tier 1. I sampled a total of 1,002 minority and non-minority elementary students from three schools in …

Surveillance Technology Toward A Dystopian Future, Sandy Hernandez Jul 2020

Surveillance Technology Toward A Dystopian Future, Sandy Hernandez

University Honors Program Senior Projects

There is a continual debate between individuals who attempt to measure the individual’s right to privacy against the government’s right to know as an exchange to provide for the security of all citizens. Questions that demand an answer are whether the individual’s right to privacy outweighs the government’s duty to provide security; and if security is considered more important, can there even be a right to privacy. When questioning the right to privacy and state surveillance, there are three key goals. First, to investigate whether the human right to privacy should exist, considering the continued threat of terrorist attacks and …

Chevron As Construction, Lawrence B. Solum, Cass R. Sunstein Jul 2020

Chevron As Construction, Lawrence B. Solum, Cass R. Sunstein

Cornell Law Review

In 1984, the Supreme Court declared that courts should uphold agency interpretations of ambiguous statutory provisions, so long as those interpretations are reasonable. The Chevron framework, as it is called, is now under serious pressure. Current debates can be both illuminated and softened with reference to an old distinction between interpretation on the one hand and construction on the other. In cases of interpretation, judges (or agencies) must ascertain the meaning of a statutory term. In cases of construction, judges (or agencies) must develop implementing principles or specify a statutory term. Chevron as construction is supported by powerful arguments; it …

Optimising The Fit Of Stack Overflow Code Snippets Into Existing Code, Brittany Reid, Christoph Treude, Markus Wagner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software developers often reuse code from online sources such as Stack Overflow within their projects. However, the process of searching for code snippets and integrating them within existing source code can be tedious. In order to improve efficiency and reduce time spent on code reuse, we present an automated code reuse tool for the Eclipse IDE (Integrated Developer Environment), NLP2TestableCode. NLP2TestableCode can not only search for Java code snippets using natural language tasks, but also evaluate code snippets based on a user’s existing code, modify snippets to improve fit and correct errors, before presenting the user with the best snippet, …

Designing Leakage-Resilient Password Entry On Head-Mounted Smart Wearable Glass Devices, Yan Li, Yao Cheng, Wenzhi Meng, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the boom of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications, head-mounted smart wearable glass devices are becoming popular to help users access various services like E-mail freely. However, most existing password entry schemes on smart glasses rely on additional computers or mobile devices connected to smart glasses, which require users to switch between different systems and devices. This may greatly lower the practicability and usability of smart glasses. In this paper, we focus on this challenge and design three practical anti-eavesdropping password entry schemes on stand-alone smart glasses, named gTapper, gRotator and gTalker. The main idea is to …

Exploration Of Lived Experiences Of Science Teachers Of English Language Learners: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Uma Maheshwari Ganesan Jul 2020

Exploration Of Lived Experiences Of Science Teachers Of English Language Learners: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Uma Maheshwari Ganesan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

English language learners (ELLs) are a talented pool of culturally and linguistically diverse students who are persistently increasing both in absolute size and percentage in the U.S. school population; however, they are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in college as well as in the workforce (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). Although educational leaders, policy makers, and researchers have emphasized the importance of STEM for the country’s continued prosperity, both education and scientific communities have found it challenging to improve students’ participation in STEM fields (Martinez et al., 2011). Exploring science teachers’ experiences could …
