Required Reading: The Role Of The Literary Scholar In Mapping Difference And Prompting Interest In Distant Destinations, Sue Norton
Articles
Taking account of research into the relationship between the reading of narrative fiction and niche tourism, this article speculates on the role of the university lecturer of literature in shaping the touristic desires of students. It is especially interested in the influence of European based lecturers of American fiction as they stimulate the geographic imaginations of their learners. Since cultural capital accrues through the reading of serious works of literature, the influence of lecturers is likely to have some bearing on the eventual travel destinations of university graduates prompted to seek out the material locations that they have read about …

Visual Feedback Fuzzy Control For A Robot Manipulator Based On Svr Learning, Xianxia Zhang, Jinqiang Zhang, Zhiyuan Li, Shiwei Ma, Banghua Yang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A fuzzy controller based on SVR learning is proposed for uncalibrated robot visual servoing. In this paper, a fuzzy controller is used to directly construct the nonlinear mapping between image features and robot joint motion. The fuzzy basis function of the fuzzy controller is taken as the kernel function of an SVR and the equivalent relationship between the SVR and the fuzzy controller is established. The learned support vector from the SVR is used as the rule of the fuzzy controller. Since all rules are learned from the data, there is no need to manually design the rules. …

Gru-Based Car-Following Behavior Simulation Model, Fei Rong, Liu Fang, Xie Guo, Hei Xinhong, Shasha Li, Hu Bo
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The accuracy of acceleration prediction can be effectively improved by the driver's memory in car-following behavior. A new car-following model based on the General Motors (GM) and the gate control unit (GRU) is proposed. The car-following data between small vehicles with similar driving behavior are obtained by data preprocessing. The established model is calibrated by the car-following data, and the optimal parameters and structure of the model are determined. According to car-following characteristics, the effectiveness of model is verified by simulation. It is confirmed that the model has high robustness and improved simulation accuracy comparing with the traditional models.

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
This educational research literature review paper aims to discuss the rationale, review eight empirical research studies, and identify knowledge gaps in culturally relevant pedagogy in science education. This paper focuses on synthesis, review, and comparison of the findings of the empirical studies, and categorizes them into thematic heads such as similarities and differences between studies under the broad categories of professional development (PD) programs and case studies. Following these reviews, the author summarizes her reflections and thoughts about the literature to understand the big picture of culturally relevant pedagogy in science education. The basis of this literature review are various …

Factors Promoting Or Preventing Caregivers From Allowing Pediatric Participation In Research, José R. Fernández, Thomas Taylor, Yenni E. Cedillo, Beatriz Maciel, Daria Salyakina, Jennifer Mccafferty
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Introduction The likelihood of a child participating in a clinical trial is mostly independent of the child’s willingness to participate; children’s lack of autonomy obliges parental involvement, which is concurrently conditional to parental understanding, trust and endorsement of the research study. Objectives To identify potential predictors for allowing children to participate in clinical studies and to evaluate if motivators that promote or prevent parental support of children to participate in clinical studies differed according to racial/ethnic categorization.
Methods A stratified sample of 1,057 caregivers of children 1-18 years old who in 2015 resided in South Florida’s Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm …
Sin And The Hacker Ethic: The Tragedy Of Techno-Utopian Ideology In Cyberspace Business Cultures, Bruce D. Baker
Sin And The Hacker Ethic: The Tragedy Of Techno-Utopian Ideology In Cyberspace Business Cultures, Bruce D. Baker
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
This article traces the course of idealistic thinking in the “hacker ethic” of the computer industry, with the aim of diagnosing the unfortunate lapses in business ethics that can ensue from idealistic thinking. Several Silicon Valley companies are mentioned, but Facebook is the prime example, simply because they are the biggest target and clearest example of bad ethics. The original “hacker ethic” was founded on admirable ideals, but the problem occurs when these ideals are used to rationalize a self-serving ideology. Facebook’s history shows how idealistic thinking can become embedded in a business culture. As an antidote to the ethical …
Re-Defining Vernacular Architecturein Third Millennium, Ibrahim Maarouf
Re-Defining Vernacular Architecturein Third Millennium, Ibrahim Maarouf
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The key purpose of this paper concerns the definition of vernacular architecture in third millennium; a topic which gives the impression of confusion from the beginning when it was a word in the book of Rudofsky. In redefining this term, supplementary conceptual issue will need to be focused briefly and the role of classification will need to be more generally because of an inextricably linked between these two matters. It may seem strange to raise such a basic question again about "What is vernacular architecture?"; because, up till now, it needs to be addressed. There has been a major revitalization …

Forced Transitions: Learning Asl In A Virtual Environment, Kara Gournaris
Forced Transitions: Learning Asl In A Virtual Environment, Kara Gournaris
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Engagement with native language models is essential for second language acquisition. Social distancing mandates made this interaction nearly impossible for students learning American Sign Language (ASL), at a small rural university in western Oregon. COVID-19 brought with it many challenges, not the least of which was a hurried transition from face-to-face to online learning. The author found that some courses degraded in content and instruction when shifting to an online platform. Without access to community events where native language models were present, ASL students had less opportunities for incidental learning, legitimate peripheral participation, and connection within Deaf communities of practice.

Not Remotely Familiar: How Covid-19 Is Reshaping Teachers’ Work And The Implications For Teacher Education, Alisun Thompson, Lina Darwich, Lora Bartlett
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the teacher workforce into distance teaching essentially overnight. This educational migration, necessitated by the public health emergency, has dramatically altered and diversified the realities of teachers’ working lives and the conditions in which they teach. This changing environment has important implications for teacher education. This paper presents five assumptions about teacher education and the uncertain work of preparing culturally responsive and social –justice oriented teachers for a rapidly evolving teaching environment. We seek to animate questions and concerns about teacher education in the context of COVID-19 and the implications for social justice teacher preparation.
Nursing Students' Perceptions Regarding Faculty Feedback, Deborah Hartzog Chatham
Nursing Students' Perceptions Regarding Faculty Feedback, Deborah Hartzog Chatham
Dissertations
Higher education researchers in a variety of disciplines have explored instructor and student perceptions of what constitutes feedback that is useful and timely. Researchers agree that students desire feedback but are often not sure of how to interpret or use faculty comments. Students vary in an understanding of what constitutes feedback. Nursing researchers have conducted fewer studies to determine student concerns regarding faculty feedback. Nursing faculty differ in perceptions of what constitutes effective feedback. Nursing faculty use various forms of feedback, such as written comments, audio recordings, and automatically generated feedback. These variations suggest nursing faculty do not always know …

The Challenges Of Translating English Compounds Into Arabic - For Better Or For Worse, Walid M. Amer, Karim Menacere
The Challenges Of Translating English Compounds Into Arabic - For Better Or For Worse, Walid M. Amer, Karim Menacere
Al Jinan الجنان
This paper examines the main challenges of translating English compounds into Arabic. Compounding is linguistically a common process across many languages where compounds are frequently formed. In English, compounding is highly creative and innovative, and often used as a means of introducing new phrases or coining new words into the lexicon. In contrast, Arabic is less resourceful. Arabic does not possess similar multiword expressions as an integral linguistic mechanism that merges language items to form a unit of language that can be broken down into single words and display idiosyncratic features. (Sag et al. 2002). As the English text-writer and …

Apprentissage Et Créativité Dans La Production Écrite En Français Langue Seconde Chez Des Apprenants Adultes Arabophones. Etude Psycho-Socio-Linguistique, Nada Ziade
Al Jinan الجنان

This study as well contains a biography of him then discusses his approach in directing continual Qiraa’at, where he suffices with the most common Qiraa’at rather that peculiar ones. Moreover, he does not show any probability for continual Qiraa’at. He works on directing those Qiraa’at in terms of linguistics, grammatically, eloquently, and jurisprudentially. A summarized study comes in this book to focus on preponderant opinions in the term of meanings with no opinions offering. Finally, researchers study his …

The Goodness Of God And His Children As A Fundamental Theological Concept In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
The Goodness Of God And His Children As A Fundamental Theological Concept In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
The phrase goodness of God does occur occasionally in the Hebrew Bible, but has not been considered by Old Testament scholars. to be a key piece of Israelite theology. Rather, it has been interpreted as just another way of talking about God’s acts of hesed or loving kindness for his covenant people and is usually interpreted in the context of the covenants Israel received through Abraham and Moses. The Book of Mormon, on the other hand, presents an explicit divine plan that existed before Abraham—even before the creation of the earth—which had as its purpose making eternal life possible for …

The paper sheds light on the literary achievement, ideas and inclinations of one of the revolutionary postmodern American poets, Nikki Giovanni (1943- ). It presents the Afro-American poet, Nikki Giovanni, her revolutionary temperament and rejection of racial discrimination and discrimination against the woman in poems like “The True Import of Present Dialogue, Black vs Negro,” “Nikki-Rosa,” “Poems for Black Boys” and “A Litany for Peppe.” The poet mirrors her time for its sex and race prejudice, and for its daily violence and unpredictable atrocities.
