From Aesthetics To Ethics: The Place Of Delight In Confucian Ethics, Andrew Lambert Oct 2020

From Aesthetics To Ethics: The Place Of Delight In Confucian Ethics, Andrew Lambert

Publications and Research

An exploration of the role of pleasure or delight (le 樂) in classical Confucian ethics. Building on Michael Nylan’s account of the role of pleasure in public spectacle and social order, I explore how the meaning of delight (le 樂) derives from the features and effects of music (yue 樂). Drawing on Dewey’ s aesthetics and accounts of music in Confucian texts, I explore a conception of Confucian ethics, in which delight— like states generated through everyday social interaction are foundational.

¡Qué Bueno! Literary Magazines For Latino And Bilingual Writers, Lauren Rheaume

The Review Review

As The Acentos Review website states, “The debate may rage forever as to who or what constitutes Latin@ art...We are already here, writing the histories of our neighborhoods, following the traditions of our ancestors, as well as the poetic traditions that came before us.” Whereas Latino writers may be among the underrepresented, underappreciated artists of our world, there are certainly many outlets carved out specifically for them to display their talents. There are also many encouraging communities out there, like the Latino Writer’s Collective of Kansas City, and the Facebook community Con Tinta which “believes in affirming a pro-active …

The quality of mechanical components depends largely on their surface roughness (Ra). The surface roughness is greatly affected by various cutting factors, the most important being feed, cutting speed and also the cutting depth. So, there are many researches dealing with this topic, some of which perform experiments on different materials to determine the value of Ra and others try to make programs to predict surface roughness to reduce time, cost and effort consumed in experiments. In this paper, a new fuzzy logic approach isintroduced to predict interstitial valuesof Ra. Data set used in fuzzy logic approach is obtained from …

The Application Of Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process In Sustainable Project Selection, Rakan Alyamani, Suzanna Long Oct 2020

The Application Of Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process In Sustainable Project Selection, Rakan Alyamani, Suzanna Long

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The project selection process is a crucial step in sustainable development. Effective sustainable development depends on the ability to select the appropriate sustainable project to implement to ensure that the desired goals are met. Some of the most common characteristics or criteria used in evaluating sustainable projects include novelty, uncertainty, skill and experience, technology information transfer, and project cost. Prioritizing these criteria based on relative importance helps project managers and decision makers identify elements that require additional attention, better allocate resources, as well as improve the selection process when evaluating different sustainable project alternatives. The aim of this research is …

New Ways Of Teaching Library Service To Immigrant Communities, Ana Ndumu, Michele Villagran Oct 2020

New Ways Of Teaching Library Service To Immigrant Communities, Ana Ndumu, Michele Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Outreach to immigrant communities is a long-standing aspect of United States (U.S.) library service. This area of library and information science (LIS) practice is vital given that immigration continues to dominate policy and public discourse. There is a need to advance U.S.- based LIS education so that new library professionals are aware of the sociopolitical implications of engagement with immigrant communities. We introduce a framework to guide instruction on best practices for outreach to immigrant communities within LIS courses. Then we describe how the framework will also inform a self-paced course to welcome immigrant populations into the LIS professions. By …

Similarity Based Fuzzy Inferior Ratio For Solving Multicriteria Decision Making Problems, Sharifah Aniza Sayed Ahmad, Daud Mohamad, Nurul Iffah Azman Oct 2020

Similarity Based Fuzzy Inferior Ratio For Solving Multicriteria Decision Making Problems, Sharifah Aniza Sayed Ahmad, Daud Mohamad, Nurul Iffah Azman

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

The method of Fuzzy Inferior Ratio (FIR) has been recognized as one of advantageous methods in multi criteria decision-making under fuzzy environment as it considers the element of compromise solution between the positive and negative aspect of the evaluation simultaneously. It is considered as an improvised version of Fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method for solving decision-making problems. However, the FIR utilizes the distance approach in the evaluation of obtaining the compromise solution. A defuzzification process is carried out to transform the fuzzy values into a crisp form. Hence, loss of information may occur …

Cultivating Identities In A Place Called Home: Intersectional, Ever Changing Identities Of Vietnamese American Youth In Culturally Sustaining Spaces, Thuy Vi Nguyen

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Educators and scholars have been advocating for culturally sustaining pedagogies in the classroom that extends, honors, and sustains the cultures and backgrounds of our growing Students of Color population. Moving beyond pedagogies in classrooms, I examine culturally sustaining spaces in culture clubs and community-based organizations and how they cultivate the identity development and sense of belonging of Vietnamese American high school students. I find that these students have complex identities that are intersectional and ever changing, existing outside the Black-White binary. Vietnamese culture clubs provide a space that allows students to belong and express their identity in a positive way, …
