Montclair State University Scholarship & Creative Works
The relationships between cognitive abilities and mathematics skills are important to examine to help clarify how cognitive abilities promote mathematics development and inform why some individuals have difficulty acquiring mathematics skills. Meta-analyses of cognitive-mathematics relations can help summarize this research across a wide variety of test batteries and samples. This study compiled data from technical manuals of 122 norm-referenced standardized test batteries and included over 47,000 correlations from over 550 correlation matrices to summarize cognitive-mathematics relations using meta-analysis. The meta-analytic correlations were used to estimate cognitive-mathematics relations in an integrated model of cognitive abilities and mathematics skills. Fluid reasoning and …
Integrating Multimodal Composition Practices In A Fifth-Grade Classroom To Enhance Student Engagement And Comprehension, Erin Beal
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the impact of integrating multimodal composition practices on fifth-grade students' writing development. Specifically, it examined how multimodal opportunities influenced student engagement, content area understanding, and overall attitudes toward the writing process. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study utilized pre- and post-surveys to assess changes in students' self-awareness and dispositions toward writing. Over the course of the research study, data was gathered through anecdotal teacher notes, direct observations, and student work samples. Working both independently and collaboratively, students synthesized content material to create and present original multimodal projects.
¿Cómo Se Hace Translanguaging En Kindergarten?, Diana Marie Franco
¿Cómo Se Hace Translanguaging En Kindergarten?, Diana Marie Franco
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored the use of translanguaging among kindergarteners and examined how students’ use of their full linguistic repertoire served as a pedagogical practice in a two-way dual-language, Spanish-world classroom. The findings indicated that translanguaging functioned as an academic and linguistic resource, supporting student engagement and participation in classroom learning. Students used their complete linguistic repertoires to clarify meaning, negotiate understanding, develop vocabulary, make cross-linguistic connections through cognates, and demonstrate emerging metalinguistic awareness. These findings contribute to the growing body of research supporting translanguaging as a pedagogical approach in dual language classrooms, especially in early childhood education. The …
The Institutional Production Of Ethical War Across Modern Conflict, Katerina Udov
The Institutional Production Of Ethical War Across Modern Conflict, Katerina Udov
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
This paper argues that modern warfare operates through an ethical infrastructure that enables, rather than restrains, the use of violence. Contrary to the common assumption that moral frameworks such as Just War Theory function as safeguards against harm, the historical record shows that ethical language, humanitarian rhetoric, and democratic narratives serve as mechanisms to legitimize intervention, manufacture consent, and naturalize civilian suffering. Through case studies including Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, U.S.-backed coups in Latin America, and French intervention in Mali, the paper traces how political leaders, media institutions, and corporate actors frame war as a moral necessity while pursuing strategic and …

The Terrible In The Journey Of Abdellah Al Baghdadi To Egypt, Adil Al Khidr
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
This article explores Abdallatif Al-Baghdadi’s journey to Egypt through the lens of semiotics, specifically the "semiotics of catastrophe." The researcher analyzes the famine and the resulting atrocities described in the text by applying concepts from catastrophe theory and Greimasian narrative semiotics. The study proposes a new methodological approach that examines how meaning is produced within the narrative text, moving from linguistic structures to broader semiotic interpretations
Narration: From Mono-Disciplinary To Multi-Disciplinary, Said Yaqtine
Narration: From Mono-Disciplinary To Multi-Disciplinary, Said Yaqtine
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
Said Yaqtine explores the shift in narrative theory from the structuralist era to the present day. He examines how linguistics and structuralism transformed the approach to narration by focusing on forms and structures rather than just themes. The article traces the transition from mono-disciplinary classical narrative analysis to a multi-disciplinary, post-classical approach that encompasses semiotics and cognitive sciences, reflecting the diverse manifestations of narration in modern human experience.
Narrative Technique In William Faulkner’S As I Lay Dying, Samir El Azhar
Narrative Technique In William Faulkner’S As I Lay Dying, Samir El Azhar
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
This article focuses on narrative technique in William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. The events are seen through the eyes of fifteen narrators and the novel consists of fifty-nine sections, each contains feelings, observations and thoughts of a character. In the face of such a complex situation, critics propose several readings, ranging from a traditional view to a more modern perspective. The aim of this paper is to represent the two conflicting views, in an attempt to find an appropriate method suitable to deal with the complex narrative structure of the novel.

The Languages Of Translocality: What Plurilingualism Means In A Maghrebi Context, Edwige Tamalet Talbayev
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
This essay rethinks monolingual approaches to Maghrebi literature that rests on the supremacy of French and Arabic as languages of expression. Instead, Edwige Tamalet proposes a plurilingual translocal critical practice both grounded in local contexts and marked by transversal trajectories between multiple sites across the Mediterranean.
From Vulnerability To Justice: Reframing Indigenous Disaster Recovery Through A Human Rights-Based Lens, Portia Ozioma Chigbu
From Vulnerability To Justice: Reframing Indigenous Disaster Recovery Through A Human Rights-Based Lens, Portia Ozioma Chigbu
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Indigenous populations regard their cultural identity as central to their way of life, and their traditional lifestyles often place them in remote areas, isolating them from mainstream society. This isolation creates a unique set of human rights challenges, such as limited access to healthcare, restricted political representation, housing insecurity, and poor living conditions, making them especially vulnerable compared to other groups. In the context of climate change and the rising frequency of natural disasters worldwide, these vulnerabilities become more protracted and intensified. Since Indigenous populations already face structural disadvantages before disasters strike, such events deepen their vulnerabilities, increase their risk …

Not Two Selves But A Relational Field: A Relational Frame Theory Reading Of Gollum, Emilio R. López-Navarro
Not Two Selves But A Relational Field: A Relational Frame Theory Reading Of Gollum, Emilio R. López-Navarro
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article examines Gollum’s divided selfhood in The Lord of the Rings as a phenomenon constructed and enacted through language rather than as a simple moral or psychological split. Building on recent linguistic work on Gollum’s idiolect, it draws on Relational Frame Theory (RFT) as a descriptive framework for analyzing how speech organizes perspective, value, and action. The argument is literary rather than clinical: RFT is used not to diagnose Gollum, but to specify the verbal structures through which Tolkien renders inner conflict audible. Four relational processes are central to the analysis: deictic instability in shifts among “Sméagol,” “Gollum,” “we,” …

Revisiting The Genesis Of French Louisiana: It’S No Coincidence The Civil Code Was Adopted—We Ain’T Anglos!, Warren Perrin
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This article examines how Louisiana’s distinctive civil law tradition survived the Louisiana Purchase and became embedded in the state’s identity through the interaction of culture, migration, and political compromise. Tracing the development of French Louisiana from the Acadian diaspora to statehood, the article argues that the adoption and preservation of the civil code was not accidental, but rather the product of a deeply rooted Francophone and multicultural society resistant to Anglo-American common law traditions. The study highlights the influence of major historical figures including Thomas Jefferson, William C.C. Claiborne, Julien Poydras, Casa Calvo, and Edward Livingston, while also emphasizing the …
Civil Code Reforms And Sources Of Law: The French And Quebec Experience Compared, Pascale Deumier, Mathieu Devinat
Civil Code Reforms And Sources Of Law: The French And Quebec Experience Compared, Pascale Deumier, Mathieu Devinat
Journal of Civil Law Studies
Can civil codes be reformed “like any other piece of legislation?” A comparison of the French and Quebec experiences illustrates the methodological challenges that arose from civil code reform projects for the Civil Code of Québec during the last two Centuries. It also reveals the complex relationship that jurists have with “their” own civil code, in a civil law context.
The Civil Law English Terminology (Civlet), A Louisiana Gift To The World, Olivier Moreteau
The Civil Law English Terminology (Civlet), A Louisiana Gift To The World, Olivier Moreteau
Journal of Civil Law Studies
In the early 19th century, Louisiana codified its civil law in French and in English. In the 20th century, it translated French civilian doctrine and then produced its own civilian literature in English. Over time, lawmakers and translators have crafted and refined new English legal terminology suited to expressing civilian concepts, thereby setting aside common law terminology. Quebec joined the process once Canada imposed bilingualism, while other English-speaking mixed jurisdictions also contributed. This article shows how, outside the common law English terminology (COMLET), a civil law English terminology (CIVLET) is developing, and is also enriched by a comparative law English …

Ideology In Translating Indonesian Political News Headlines From Indonesian To English: A Cda Study Of Antara, Ferina A. Lestari, Haru Deliana Dewi
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This study examines how ideology is constructed in the translation of Indonesian political news headlines into English by ANTARA News Agency. Moving beyond the notion of translation as mere equivalence, it conceptualizes headline translation as a process of discursive recontextualization shaped by institutional practices and audience design. Using a qualitative comparative approach, the study analyses 20 pairs of Indonesian English political headlines. The analysis implied Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The dimensional focusing on textual features, discourse practice, and social practice. The findings reveal transformations, including omission of culturally specific details, addition of evaluative elements, lexical reframing, …

Expanding Extension education programs to serve the Hispanic community will be important as this population continues to grow. The rate of diabetes is higher among the Hispanic population than the non-Hispanic population; however, the barriers to implementing a health education program and recruiting participants are plentiful. This paper highlights the work conducted by the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service, in partnership with organizations across South Carolina, to adapt and deliver the Health Extension for Diabetes program to the Hispanic community. It offers insights into effective strategies for program adaptation, recruitment, and delivery that agents can use to overcome barriers and increase …
Heterogeneous Graph-Augmented Contrastive Learning For Extreme Multi-Class Fiqh Classification, Ali A. Jalil
Heterogeneous Graph-Augmented Contrastive Learning For Extreme Multi-Class Fiqh Classification, Ali A. Jalil
Al-Bahir
- Background/Introduction: Fine-grained text classification in the field of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) is difficult because of the structural interdependence of the legal concepts and the extremely multi-class long-tail data distribution (667 classes with 5,979 samples, 52.2% of which contain less than 5 samples). The main problem with traditional flat classifiers is that they assume that target classes are independent and orthogonal output neurons which discards very important relational semantics.
- Objectives: This paper seeks to remediate this extreme imbalance and maintain structural taxonomy by modeling the structural space of classification label space itself as an object to be learned, while giving a …

Interference Between Speaking And Computer Tasks In Senior Adults, Tyla K. Flake
Interference Between Speaking And Computer Tasks In Senior Adults, Tyla K. Flake
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Multitasking is common in daily life. Previous studies have often relied on contrived tasks and utterances to explore divided attention and speech. The focus of the present study was on older adults performing everyday computer tasks while speaking naturally. Thirty participants aged 55 - 82 participated in speech-only, computer-only, and simultaneous speech and computer tasks to measure dual-task interference of the two activities. The speech task consisted of 60-second speech samples based on a list of procedural discourse prompts. Three computer tasks were completed with and without concurrent speech, one requiring data-entry and sorting and a text formatting task with …
Telling On Themselves: A Qualitative Study On The Linguistic Markers Of Deception In High-Stakes Speech, James Butcher
Telling On Themselves: A Qualitative Study On The Linguistic Markers Of Deception In High-Stakes Speech, James Butcher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Deception detection in forensic and legal settings has historically relied on behavioral and nonverbal cues. Extensive research has demonstrated that these indicators are unreliable and prone to bias. This reliance has a significant impact on investigations, legal outcomes, and public trust. Although linguistic research has identified individual markers of deceptive speech, limited attention has been given to how multiple linguistic cues interact in real-world, high-stakes contexts. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how pronoun shifts, avoidance language, and equivocation cluster together during high-stakes deceptive speech. Truth-default theory (TDT) served as the theoretical foundation, and critical discourse analysis …

The Role Of Social Determinants Of Health In Hydroxyurea Adherence Among Persons With Sickle Cell Disease: A Systematic Review, Doreen O. Ugwu, Lori L. Vick, Terika Williams, Aurela Nikaj, Seyi Omeh, Benjamin Becerra Dr., Tilicia Mayo-Gamble
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Objective: Georgia has one of the highest prevalences of sickle cell disease (SCD). For Georgians living with SCD, inadequate medication adherence is associated with important clinical outcomes. One important area that is understudied in SCD is the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on medication adherence. A foundational understanding of SDoH is needed to introduce, inform and carry out programs and interventions designed to facilitate hydroxyurea adherence through the state of Georgia.
Method: We conducted a systematic literature review to synthesize the literature on SDoH addressed in studies to improve hydroxyurea adherence in persons with SCD. SDoH were based …
