#Sayhername: Putting The "I" In Intersectionality In Black Female Social Movements, Gabrielle N. Reed
#Sayhername: Putting The "I" In Intersectionality In Black Female Social Movements, Gabrielle N. Reed
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Mediated channels continue to be one of the main methods of dispersing pertinent information to and from Black communities. Black women’s voices have historically been stifled due to patriarchy and racism; thus, Black women have often used forms of media as a primary means to build coalitions with other Black women and to effectively communicate resistance. This research will closely analyze how prominent participants in the #SayHerName movement approach intersectionality in the digital era of the 21st century. Data will be directly extracted from the digital platform Twitter to contribute to the growing conversation surrounding Black women’s impact on …
Where We Go 1 We Go All: A Public Discourse Analysis Of Qanon, Kylar J. Chandler
Where We Go 1 We Go All: A Public Discourse Analysis Of Qanon, Kylar J. Chandler
McNair Scholars Research Journal
During the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump amassed a following of extremists. After Trump settled into his presidency, subsets of his original following emerged. One group included a committed following of an individual known by the code name “Q.” Q claimed to be a top-clearance military official who would slowly reveal the “truth” about the political “deep state.” Q communicated directly to their followers through “leaks,” or posts, on the anonymous message boards of 4chan, 8chan, and 8kun. This paper examines the content of these leaks and discusses how the leaks influenced the discourse of QAnon followers. This discourse …

Health information is a weapon that provides people with much-needed knowledge about self-care management, especially in the rural areas, where only clinics are the key players in the provision and dissemination of such information. The purpose of the study was to investigate the accessibility of health information provided by the clinics in the rural areas of the Capricorn region of the Limpopo Province in South Africa. The study employed the qualitative research method. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with the community members who visited the clinics at the time of the data collection. The negative attitude displayed by the healthcare …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study was an empirical study aimed at investigating the impact of effective time management counseling on academic adjustment of deviant student-librarians in Nigerian universities. Two research questions were posed as a guide for the study while one null hypothesis was formulated and tested. The study used a quasi-experimental research design involving on group one group pre-test and post-test design. A sampled population of 60 students was drawn for the study through purposive sampling technique while the questionnaire formed the major instrument used in collecting data for the study. The face validity and reliability of the instrument were established and …

Seeing Formative Assessments From A Broad Perspective, Consuelo Marisol Gallardo
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
October 2020 | 194 Seeing Formative Assessments from a Broad Perspective Consuelo M. Gallardo Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education University of Nebraska-Lincoln Abstract Despite the fact that many experts in the assessment field have advocated for the use of formative assessments, little attention has been paid to their thorough elaboration and application in Ecuadorian English as Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Some teachers have overlooked the validity of formative assessment as tools to inform instruction and language learning growth, so its application has generated a big debate. Therefore, this paper presents a literature review of perceptions and experiences of …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Behavioral health integration in primary care is identified as an important strategy to achieve early identification and treatment of behavioral health disorders. This paper describes a pilot project designed to test the feasibility and sustainability of integrating behavioral health into pediatric primary care clinics. Five private, fee for service pediatric primary care practices were identified in the greater Houston area to establish behavioral health integration. The practices were supported with establishment of behavioral health integration, specifically with recruitment of the behavioral health provider, training of the clinical and administrative teams, and development of interdisciplinary clinical protocols. Difficulties in implementation included …

Easy In Any Language: Syntax, Semantics, And Pragmatics Of Activity-Oriented Adjectives In Six Languages, David Koffman
Easy In Any Language: Syntax, Semantics, And Pragmatics Of Activity-Oriented Adjectives In Six Languages, David Koffman
Master's Theses
Words that denote the degree of effort required for some activity, called easy adjectives here, have distinctive behavior. This behavior is explored in six languages to determine how the semantics of these words is reflected in the expressions to which they can apply, the constructions in which they appear, and their use in discourse. For four Indo-European languages, English, Spanish, German, and Russian, the analysis is based on random samples from linguistic corpora. For two non-Indo-European languages, Japanese and Swahili, the analysis is based on consultant elicitations and published examples. The analysis confirms that easy adjectives have distinctive behavior compared …

Dynamic Emotional Language Adaptation In Multiparty Interactions With Agents, B Irfan, A Narayanan, J Kennedy
Dynamic Emotional Language Adaptation In Multiparty Interactions With Agents, B Irfan, A Narayanan, J Kennedy
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In order to achieve more believable interactions with artificial agents, there is a need to produce dialogue that is not only relevant, but also emotionally appropriate and consistent. This paper presents a comprehensive system that models the emotional state of users and an agent to dynamically adapt dialogue utterance selection. A Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) with an online solver is used to model user reactions in real-time. The model decides the emotional content of the next utterance based on the rewards from the users and the agent. The previous approaches are extended through jointly modeling the user and …
Modelo Filosófico-Literario De La Retrospectiva Contemporánea, Bermaries A. Vélez Maldonado
Modelo Filosófico-Literario De La Retrospectiva Contemporánea, Bermaries A. Vélez Maldonado
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Interpretation Of Pathological Arbitration Agreements: Non-Existing And Inaccessible Elements, Morten Frank
Interpretation Of Pathological Arbitration Agreements: Non-Existing And Inaccessible Elements, Morten Frank
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
In the following, I will initially present the terminological and analytical framework for handling pathological arbitration agreements (Part II). Against this background, I will analyze case law from USA (Part III), Singapore and Hong Kong (Part IV), and England (Part V) in order to establish under which circumstances Solution 1, Solution 2 and Solution 3 apply in respect of arbitration agreements containing non-existing and inaccessible elements. Finally, Part VI considers an adjoining—although fundamentally different—interpretation situation across jurisdictions. Part VII provides a summary as well as concluding remarks on the drafting of arbitration agreements.

Comparison Of High-Tech Augmentative And Alternative Communication Interfaces: Do Age And Technology Experience Matter?, Surani Gopika Nakkawita
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Previous research has demonstrated that individuals with stroke-induced aphasia can use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) when they cannot meet their communication needs using spoken language (Dietz, Weissling, Griffith, McKelvey, & Macke, 2014; Purdy & Van Dyke, 2011). Of the various interfaces found in the different AAC systems, the grid display and the visual scene display (VSD) have been used by individuals with aphasia (Hough & Johnson, 2009; Dietz et al., 2018). However, there is a scarcity of research examining the comparative usefulness of these interfaces.
This prospective study attempted to understand how neurologically healthy individuals of different ages and …
Advocating High School Speech Communication Education: Sowing Stronger Seeds For The Future, Adam J. Jacobi
Advocating High School Speech Communication Education: Sowing Stronger Seeds For The Future, Adam J. Jacobi
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
This paper presents a case for the necessity of speech communication as part of the core curriculum for secondary schools in the United States. In considering research-based pedagogical practices, as well as outcomes-based assessment, communication education focuses students’ critical thinking and competency in the two most overlooked zones of literacy: listening and speaking. To that end, the National Communication Association (NCA) and its special interest organizations, such as those focused on forensics are urged to support efforts to require speech communication as a graduation requirement, to require those courses be taught by teachers certified in communication, and to encourage NCA …

What Is Education For? A Response To "What Kind Of Citizens Do Educators Hope Their Students Become? A Response To 'Storypath: A Powerful Tool For Engaging Children In Civic Learning.'", Margit E. Mcguire, Laurie Stevahn, Shari Wennik Bronsther
Democracy & Education
Darwich (2020) asked “What Kind of Citizens Do Educators Hope Their Students Become?” in her response to “Storypath: A Powerful Tool for Engaging Children in Civic Education” (McGuire et al., 2019). She argued that civics should be rooted in social justice grounded by critical civic empathy, which requires focusing on power and privilege given persistent disparities in caring for all people within our democracy. We agree and here further emphasize the importance of dismantling systems of oppression that block efforts to advance this goal. We also recognize pragmatic complexities in elementary school classrooms that require teacher professional judgment to create …

Writing That Counts: Grounding A Critique Of The Common Core English Language Arts Standards In Classroom Memories, Katie Nagrotsky, Anaisbely Franjul Grullon
Democracy & Education
The authors of this article call upon classroom memories to demonstrate the harm of the standardized testing apparatus in the English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. Goal setting under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) has led to targeted school intervention based on metrics, and many states have chosen to double down on standardized ELA and math test data to determine the quality of a school, student learning, and teacher effectiveness. The authors argue that the assessments associated with the ELA Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are harmful to all students, and particularly students from marginalized communities whose literacies are not …

The Measure Of Youth Policy Arguments: An Approach To Supporting Democratic Participation And Student Voice, Ben Kirshner, Shelley Zion, Daniela Digiacomo, Ginnie Logan
Democracy & Education
Although experiential approaches to democracy education are gaining increased support from educators and scholars, few educational resources exist to support youth in constructing and delivering high-quality, evidence-based policy arguments to authentic audiences. Such presentations are often the first time that young people step into the public sphere and speak to public officials; they represent rich opportunities for youth political development and activism. In this paper, we introduce an assessment tool, called the Measure of Youth Policy Arguments (MYPA), which is intended to be a resource for community and school educators. Drawing on data from two years of field-testing and iterative …

Public Schools At-Risk: Examining A Century Of U.S. Media Coverage Of "Unsatisfactory Student Performance" And The Rise Of School Privatization, Jeffrey Frenkiewich, Joseph J. Onosko
Democracy & Education
Throughout the 20th century, community-owned and operated public schooling was viewed in the United States as an essential mechanism for advancing the country’s democratic ideals, institutions, and economic interests. But the first decades of the 21st century has witnessed a historic shift away from this commitment to public schools, as federal and state lawmakers created taxpayer-funded policies supportive of private school vouchers and for-profit charter schools. The authors examine more than 100 years of national newspaper coverage related to the perennial problem of ‘unsatisfactory student performance,’ particularly changes in terminology used to describe these students and explanations for their ‘unsatisfactory …

That's My Voice! Participation And Democratic Citizenship In The Early Childhood Classroom, Monica Miller Marsh, Elizabeth A. Kenyon, Terri Cardy, Erin M. West
Democracy & Education
This paper shares a participatory action research study conducted by a team of researchers at a university laboratory school in collaboration with three classroom teachers and 60 preschoolers. The team engaged in this research in order to examine the ways in which school personnel could generate more authentic community service experiences with, rather than simply for, children. Findings illustrate that with the support of adults, children generated ways to address issues, discussed their ideas with adults, reflected on their actions, and understood that their voices were being heard beyond the school community. With this increased participation, young people were able …

Autoethnography Of Laughter: Transforming Identity By Teaching Composition And Linguistics Through Humor, Olya Cochran
Theses and Dissertations
The following dissertation is a story composed of humorous and humor-related experiences, lived by me as an immigrant student and instructor. I reflect on how those experiences influenced the transformation and performance of my teaching identity and shaped my humor-based pedagogy for Composition and Introductory Linguistics courses. The work is considering the effects of humor on my linguistic and cultural competences as well as my teaching practice. Along with that, the work provides an overview of scholarship on humor in education and the ways practicing academics utilize humor in their teaching and teaching identities. To reflect on how and why …
Reading Knowledge Transfer From The Pre-Service Teaching Phase To The Novice Teaching Phase: A Phenomenological Study, Natalie Sajko
Reading Knowledge Transfer From The Pre-Service Teaching Phase To The Novice Teaching Phase: A Phenomenological Study, Natalie Sajko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
This qualitative study explored the experiences of eight novice teachers as they transferred knowledge of reading instruction from their teacher education programs (TEPs) into their first classrooms in a rural district. Specific mechanisms for learning transfer (prior knowledge, motivation, context, and culture) and their perceived influences were also explored. Phenomenology was utilized to help explore these experiences and perceptions. Social constructivism, Situated Learning Theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and critical pedagogies (hooks, 2014; Love, 2019) were used to interpret findings in this study. This study centered on the following questions: (1) how do elementary novice teachers perceive reading knowledge transfer …
