Assessing If Patients Would Benefit From Electronic Patient Information Leaflets (Epils), Maria Gormley
Assessing If Patients Would Benefit From Electronic Patient Information Leaflets (Epils), Maria Gormley
Level 3
The importance of the patient information leaflet (PIL) is underlined by the fact it is the only mandatory information that patients in Europe are legislated to receive with their medicines. Issues with the PIL in its current paper format have been well documented and in recent years there has been a push to move from these paper leaflets provided in the medicine carton to the information being made available as an electronic PIL (ePIL). This paper explores the potential negative and positive consequences of ePILs and their impact on patients. In a survey of almost 600 people it was shown …
Covid -19 And The Need For Robust Risk Control Strategies: Can Ich-Q9 Help?, Umit Kartoglu, Kevin O'Donnell, James Vesper
Covid -19 And The Need For Robust Risk Control Strategies: Can Ich-Q9 Help?, Umit Kartoglu, Kevin O'Donnell, James Vesper
Level 3
The COVID-19 pandemic requires robust risk control strategies; these should be multi-layered, science-based and subjected to effectiveness checks and formal reviews, to identify any unintended consequences. They should be supported by communications informed by an understanding of biases and risk perception. While developing such strategies for COVID-19 is difficult, given the scale of the problem and the diversity of stakeholders, the approach to Quality Risk Management (QRM) used by the pharmaceutical industry provides governments and public health officials with a ready-made framework to arrive at such control strategies. This approach is set out in the ICH Guideline on Quality Risk …

Understanding The Concept Of Formality In Quality Risk Management, Kevin O'Donnell, Deirdre Tobin, Stephanie Butler, Ghada Haddad, Donal Kelleher
Level 3
Formality in Quality Risk Management (QRM) is an interesting concept. What makes a QRM activity ‘formal’ and what makes one ‘informal’? A simplistic viewpoint might be that formal is when a QRM tool is used to manage risks, and informal is when no such tool is used. But is it that simple? And are there different degrees of formality in QRM - is it a spectrum, or is it a binary concept? These questions are explored in this paper. Since the introduction of ICH Q9 in 2005, there have been discussions in the pharmaceutical industry and between regulators regarding the …
Simple Practices To Facilitate The Flow Of Valuable Tacit Knowledge During Biopharmaceutical Technology Transfer: A Case Study, Martin Lipa, Paige Kane, Anne Greene
Simple Practices To Facilitate The Flow Of Valuable Tacit Knowledge During Biopharmaceutical Technology Transfer: A Case Study, Martin Lipa, Paige Kane, Anne Greene
Level 3
The biopharmaceutical industry is regarded as a knowledge industry. However, in general, the industry is not effective at managing its knowledge as an asset across the product lifecycle, including during fundamental processes such as technology transfer. This is true in particular for tacit knowledge (e.g., know-how), where tacit knowledge it considered critical to the success of technology transfer, yet tacit knowledge transfer is somewhat ineffective. This can lead to the introduction of risk and other undesirable outcomes. This paper profiles a case study in tacit knowledge flow where a series of pragmatic practices were deployed during a complex …

Menus of the 21st Century
The day Michael Sheary's daughter was born, in 2014, he made a promise he was going to do something to make the world a better place for her to live in. With a background in hospitality, and after several trips to the United States, he saw an opportunity for an Irish Burger joint - BuJo - with "a Michelin-starred approach to sourcing and sustainability". He hired Grainne O'Keefe (of Clanbrassil House), and they spent two years working on the concept before BuJo opened, in early 2018. Almost every ingredient they use is Irish, with grass-fed beef and potatoes from north …

The Magic And Metaphysics Of Shit :The Production Of Space And Digital Technology, David Capener
Articles
Reading Henri Lefebvre alongside Bernard Stiegler, this paper explores the changes that have taken place to the production of space in our age of digital technology. Lefebvre sensed the radical changes taking place in society through the implementation of computational technologies. He asked a prescient question: How is this space being produced? Lefebvre was unable to foresee the significant changes to the actual mechanics of the production of space brought about by the third industrial revolution. A thinker who does do this is Bernard Stiegler who is interested in how new digital technologies change memory via tertiary mnemotechnical devices – …

Towards A Devolved Model Of Management Of Oer? The Case Of The Irish Higher Education Sector, Angelica Risquez, Claire Mcavinia, Yvonne Desmond, Catherine Bruen, Deirdre Ryan, Ann Coughlan
Journal Articles
This paper reports on the research findings from a national project examining the issues in creating, sharing, using, and reusing open educational resources (OER) in the context of the development of open education in Ireland. One important aspect of the research was to investigate the potential for using existing institutional research repository infrastructure for the purpose of ingesting, managing, and discovering OER produced by academics. This approach would imply a move from previous strategy around a centralised repository at the national level to a devolved model that relies on institutional research repositories. The opportunities and potential barriers to the adoption …

Narratives Of Creativity Among Social Care Educators In Irish Higher Education, Louisa Goss
Narratives Of Creativity Among Social Care Educators In Irish Higher Education, Louisa Goss
Theses
Research on creativity in the delivery of social care highlights growing evidence of its importance for the wellbeing and quality of life of those in receipt of care, as well as benefits for the workforce. However, what is less well understood and overlooked in the literature is how creativity is conceptualised and operationalised in practice and education. This thesis attends to this gap in research from the perspective of social care educators. With the aim of deepening understanding of higher education teachers’ construction of creativity, the study explores small stories about creativity from six educators teaching into an undergraduate degree …

The construction industry consumes up to 50% of mineral resources excavated from nature, generates about 33% of CO2 present in the atmosphere, and is responsible for 40% of total global energy through construction and operation of buildings. There is a realisation that SME’s perceived lack of innovation is causing a genuine concern in the AEC industry as they do not have the skills or tools required to help address these concerns. To assist in overcoming these barriers, a number of funding initiatives have been put in place through Horizon 2020 with a focus on BIM, due to it having the …

The safety of food is fundamental to public health, businesses and wider society and effective food safety training is an essential element to ensure safe food reaches our consumers. This is true for all food business operators in all sectors of the food industry including food service, retail and manufacturing facilities. Not complying with food safety obligations can have a serious impact on human health and serious consequences for the food business operator. In 2015 the World Health Organisation reported that almost 1 in 10 people fall ill every year from eating contaminated food and 420,000 die as a result. …

Brain Disease Detection From Eegs: Comparing Spiking And Recurrent Neural Networks For Non-Stationary Time Series Classification, Hristo Stoev
Dissertations
Modeling non-stationary time series data is a difficult problem area in AI, due to the fact that the statistical properties of the data change as the time series progresses. This complicates the classification of non-stationary time series, which is a method used in the detection of brain diseases from EEGs. Various techniques have been developed in the field of deep learning for tackling this problem, with recurrent neural networks (RNN) approaches utilising Long short-term memory (LSTM) architectures achieving a high degree of success. This study implements a new, spiking neural network-based approach to time series classification for the purpose of …

Content-Based Filtering Recommendation Approach To Label Irish Legal Judgements, Sandesh Gangadhar
Dissertations
Machine learning approaches are applied across several domains to either simplify or automate tasks which directly result in saved time or cost. Text document labelling is one such task that requires immense human knowledge about the domain and efforts to review, understand and label the documents. The company Stare Decisis summarises legal judgements and labels them as they are made available on Irish public legal source www.courts.ie. This research presents a recommendation-based approach to reduce the time for solicitors at Stare Decisis by reducing many numbers of available labels to pick from to a concentrated few that potentially contains the …
A Discrimination Aware Model To Predict Childhood Literacy Levels, Kate Byrne
A Discrimination Aware Model To Predict Childhood Literacy Levels, Kate Byrne
Dissertations
It is illegal in Ireland to discriminate in the provision of education on the basis of multiple characteristics including gender, race and religion. While the increased use of machine learning models can open multiple avenues to identify early intervention strategies in education, caution must be exercised to ensure that any intervention does not discriminate with respect to a protected class. Poor literacy in childhood can have long term effects as the child ages, including on employment and mental health outcomes. Early intervention is key in mitigating this. In this dissertation, a model was created that predicted the outcome of a …

Background Food systems are associated with severe and persistent problems worldwide. Governance approaches aiming to foster sustainable transformation of food systems face several challenges due to the complex nature of food systems.
Scope and approach In this commentary we argue that addressing these governance challenges requires the development and adoption of novel research and innovation (R&I) approaches that will provide evidence to inform food system transformation and will serve as catalysts for change. We first elaborate on the complexity of food systems (transformation) and stress the need to move beyond traditional linear R&I approaches to be able to respond to …
