Strategic Decision-Making In A Turbulent Business Environment: A Dynamic Capabilities Framework For Quantity Surveying Professional Service Firms In Ireland, Michael Adesi Jan 2020

Strategic Decision-Making In A Turbulent Business Environment: A Dynamic Capabilities Framework For Quantity Surveying Professional Service Firms In Ireland, Michael Adesi

Doctoral

The construction industry contributes significantly to the socio-economic development of nations through infrastructure development, and job creation culminating into the growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Quantity Surveying Professional Service Firms (QSPSFs) play a critical role in the construction industry by ensuring that projects are delivered within cost, required quality and duration by providing technical and knowledge-intensive services to clients, contractors and stakeholders. Irish QSPSFs are facing challenges such as tender price inflation, intense competition, a skills shortage and disruptive technology. These challenges coupled with the cyclicality of the sector create a turbulent business environment for Irish QSPSFs, yet there …

Stakeholder Engagement And The Future Of Irish Public–Private Partnerships, Gail Sheppard, Matthias Beck Jan 2020

Stakeholder Engagement And The Future Of Irish Public–Private Partnerships, Gail Sheppard, Matthias Beck

Articles

Building on recent works that stress the importance of stakeholder engagement in partnerships, we propose a novel benchmarking framework for the evaluation of public–private partnerships. This framework describes mutuality and the preservation of organisational identity as the ideal characteristics of partnerships because they, in turn, encourage stakeholder support for public–private partnerships. Applying this framework to infrastructure public–private partnerships in Ireland, we note that mutual accountability has been weakened following the financial crisis. Meanwhile, con-sultation with clients such as key public–private partnership stakeholders, which would help articulate organisational identities, remains patchy across the education, justice
and health public–private partnership that we …

Lattice Boltzmann Method For Multiphase Flows With High Density Ratios, Norjan Jumaa Jan 2020

Lattice Boltzmann Method For Multiphase Flows With High Density Ratios, Norjan Jumaa

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis describes the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and its application to single and multiphase flows. The LBM algorithm using Single Relaxation Time (SRT) and Multi Relaxation Time (MRT) models are studied. In particular, a new MRT multiphase model is developed, based upon the SRT multiphase model of Banari et al. (2014). A unified LBM approach is used with separate formulations for the phase field, the pressureless Naiver-Stokes (NS) equations and the correction of the pressureless velocity field by solving a Poisson equation. To validate the current model, computations for various Reynolds numbers (Re) were performed to simulate 2D lid …

Profiling And Identification Of Web Applications In Computer Network, Hussein Oudah Jan 2020

Profiling And Identification Of Web Applications In Computer Network, Hussein Oudah

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Characterising network traffic is a critical step for detecting network intrusion or misuse. The traditional way to identify the application associated with a set of traffic flows uses port number and DPI (Deep Packet Inspection), but it is affected by the use of dynamic ports and encryption. The research community proposed models for traffic classification that determined the most important requirements and recommendations for a successful approach. The suggested alternatives could be categorised into four techniques: port-based, packet payload based, host behavioural, and statistical-based. The traditional way to identifying traffic flows typically focuses on using IANA assigned port numbers and …

A Privacy-Enhancing Framework For Mobile Devices, Aziz Alshehri Jan 2020

A Privacy-Enhancing Framework For Mobile Devices, Aziz Alshehri

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The use of mobile devices in daily life has increased exponentially, leading to them occupying many essential aspects of people’s lives, such as replacing credit cards to make payments, and for various forms of entertainment and social activities. Therefore, users have installed an enormous number of apps. These apps can collect and share a large amount of data, such as location data, images, videos, health data, and call logs, which are highly valuable and sensitive for users. Consequently, the use of apps raises a variety of privacy concerns regarding which app is allowed to access and share; to what degree …

Lattice Boltzmann Method For 2d And 3d Flows In Channels And Ducts With Slip And No-Slip Walls, Zainab Ali Bu Sinnah

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The aim of this thesis is to study the Lattice Boltzmann method for fluid dynamics by using moment based boundary condition to implement no-slip and partial slip boundary conditions in two and three dimensions. The main topics are the theory of the Lattice Boltzmann method, an examination of boundary conditions and the application of the Lattice Boltzmann method to a variety of fluid flows. We developed and successfully implemented combinations of no-slip, Navier-slip, pressure boundaries and inlet conditions in two and three dimensions using moment-based boundary conditions including careful treatments of conditions along edges and at corners. A useful advantage …

Activity-Based User Authentication Using Smartwatches, Neamah Hasan Al-Naffakh Jan 2020

Activity-Based User Authentication Using Smartwatches, Neamah Hasan Al-Naffakh

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Smartwatches, which contain an accelerometer and gyroscope, have recently been used to implement gait and gesture- based biometrics; however, the prior studies have long-established drawbacks. For example, data for both training and evaluation was captured from single sessions (which is not realistic and can lead to overly optimistic performance results), and in cases when the multi-day scenario was considered, the evaluation was often either done improperly or the results are very poor (i.e., greater than 20% of EER). Moreover, limited activities were considered (i.e., gait or gestures), and data captured within a controlled environment which tends to be far less …

Honeypot For Wireless Sensor Networks, Jürgen Markert Jan 2020

Honeypot For Wireless Sensor Networks, Jürgen Markert

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

People have understood that computer systems need safeguarding and require knowledge of security principles for their protection. While this has led to solutions for system components such as malware-protection, firewalls and intrusion detection systems, the ubiquitous usage of tiny microcomputers appeared at the same time. A new interconnectivity is on the rise in our lives. Things become “smart” and increasingly build new networks of devices. In this context the wireless sensor networks here interact with users and also, vice versa as well; unprivileged users able to interact with the wireless sensor network may harm the privileged user as a result. …

One of the aims of Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) is to create graduates who problem solve as socially responsible global citizens. We wanted to provide an opportunity for our students toaddress relevant, marketing and consumption challenges in new and innovative ways, and to develop analytical competences and professional skills and comportment in a real-life context. This paper describes the design, implementation and outcome of an inter-disciplinary and cross-programme ‘authentic assessment’ method which we have termed a ‘live case analysis’.The assessment comprised fieldwork, wider industry engagement, formative assessment components and a summative presentation. The method is discussed against the backdrop of a Curriculum Framework project …

University Interactions: Forms, Peculiarities And Tensions, Nkechinyem Omeife, Conor Horan Jan 2020

University Interactions: Forms, Peculiarities And Tensions, Nkechinyem Omeife, Conor Horan

Conference papers

Interactions between university and industry or society mainly occur in the form of transfer and/or collaborations. However, both forms have mostly been discussed as transfer thus, the underpinnings of both forms are not often discussed. As a result, the tensions (contradictions, dialectics and paradoxes) embedded in the interactions are also overlooked (not explored). This paper proposes to explore the underpinnings of the both forms of interaction and the tensions therein. Transfer is often linked with incubation and acceleration with concerns around absorption and diffusion of knowledge and through channels such as publications, conferences, teaching and pedagogy, joint research and knowledge …

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations Of Model-Scale Tsunami Waves, Ruaa Wana Jan 2020

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations Of Model-Scale Tsunami Waves, Ruaa Wana

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a meshfree, Lagrangian, particle method. It was first invented to solve astrophysical problems, but has since been developed and used to model a wide variety of fluid flows. Also, it is particularly well suited to simulating flow problems that have large deformations or contain free surfaces. This thesis describes in detail the SPH method and its application to single phase models of flows. Fortran code has been written to implement the method. To validate and establish SPH parameters to use, the SPH method has been used in different flow simulations, in particular, lid-driven cavity flow, …

Network-Based Management For Optimising Video Delivery, Ali Edan Taher Alissa Jan 2020

Network-Based Management For Optimising Video Delivery, Ali Edan Taher Alissa

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The past decade has witnessed a massive increase in Internet video traffic. The Cisco Visual Forecast index indicates that, by 2022, (79%) of the world's mobile data traffic will be video traffic. In order to increase the video streaming market revenue, service providers need to provide services to the end-users characterised by high Quality of Experience (QoE). However, delivering good-quality video services is a very challenging task due to the stringent constraints related to bandwidth and latency requirements in video streaming. Among the available streaming services, HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has become the de facto standard for multimedia delivery over …

Proactive Biometric-Enabled Forensic Imprinting System, A Alruban Jan 2020

Proactive Biometric-Enabled Forensic Imprinting System, A Alruban

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Insider threats are a significant security issue. The last decade has witnessed countless instances of data loss and exposure in which leaked data have become publicly available and easily accessible. Losing or disclosing sensitive data or confidential information may cause substantial financial and reputational damage to a company. Therefore, preventing or responding to such incidents has become a challenging task. Whilst more recent research has focused explicitly on the problem of insider misuse, it has tended to concentrate on the information itself—either through its protection or approaches to detecting leakage. Although digital forensics has become a de facto standard in …

Author Verification Of Electronic Messaging Systems, Abdulaziz Altamimi Jan 2020

Author Verification Of Electronic Messaging Systems, Abdulaziz Altamimi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Messaging systems have become a hugely popular new paradigm for sending and delivering text messages; however, online messaging platforms have also become an ideal place for criminals due to their anonymity, ease of use and low cost. Therefore, the ability to verify the identity of individuals involved in criminal activity is becoming increasingly important. The majority of research in this area has focused on traditional authorship problems that deal with single-domain datasets and large bodies of text. Few research studies have sought to explore multi-platform author verification as a possible solution to problems around forensics and security. Therefore, this research …

Managing Knowledge And Risk:A Literature Review On The Interdependency Of Qrm And Km As Ich Q10 Enablers, Marty Lipa, Kevin O'Donnell, Anne Greene Jan 2020

Managing Knowledge And Risk:A Literature Review On The Interdependency Of Qrm And Km As Ich Q10 Enablers, Marty Lipa, Kevin O'Donnell, Anne Greene

Level 3

Quality Risk Management (QRM) and Knowledge Management (KM) have been positioned as co-enablers to the Pharmaceutical Quality System since the 2010 issuance of ICH Q10. Yet these disciplines have remained largely distinct and disconnected in practice. This paper presents a two-part literature review on this topic. First is a review of how other industries have connected risk management and knowledge management. This is followed by a review of relevant biopharmaceutical industry regulatory guidance to explore expectations for how risk, risk management, knowledge and knowledge management are interdependent. The results suggest there is a strong argument in favor of linking risk …

Regulatory Readiness Level: A Tool To Enhance Early Regulatory Adoption In Academic Discovery, Eamonn Mcgowran, Elaine Harris Jan 2020

Regulatory Readiness Level: A Tool To Enhance Early Regulatory Adoption In Academic Discovery, Eamonn Mcgowran, Elaine Harris

Level 3

The development of pharmaceuticals products is a complex and arduous process. It requires significant investment (both financial and time). The costs of developing products range from $314 million to $2.8 billion, with the time of bringing a new drug to market up to 15 years. The overall probability of success from phase 1 to approval is estimated at between 9% to 12%. Concerns have been raised in the fall off of new approvals and the decreasing number of innovative therapies coming through pharmaceutical R&D divisions. Academia is recognised as a source of such new therapies, but their strengths do not …

From Idea To Therapeutic: Is There A Role For Developing A Regulatory Pathway Tool For Early Stage Research?, Elaine Harris, Eimear O'Reilly Jan 2020

From Idea To Therapeutic: Is There A Role For Developing A Regulatory Pathway Tool For Early Stage Research?, Elaine Harris, Eimear O'Reilly

Level 3

Academic institutions are a well-established source of pharmaceutical innovation. However, the researchers behind these discoveries are rarely responsible for successful translation of their findings to the market. It is hypothesized that by enhancing their understanding and knowledge of the regulatory requirements associated with drug development, the speed of innovation to market would be increased, while simultaneously decreasing technology transfer issues that arise as commercially focused projects move from academia to industry. The usefulness of an associated regulatory readiness tool to guide researchers involved in commercially focused projects will also be investigated.

Development Of The Self Inspection Programme To Assist Demonstrating Pqs Effecetiveness, Helena Scully, Fiona O'Sullivan Jan 2020

Development Of The Self Inspection Programme To Assist Demonstrating Pqs Effecetiveness, Helena Scully, Fiona O'Sullivan

Level 3

Demonstration of an effective pharmaceutical quality system (PQS) is a regulatory requirement and is essential if pharmaceutical companies are to achieve the flexible regulatory approaches envisioned by ICH Quality guidelines, the most recent being for post-approval changes as per ICH Q12. While self-inspection has the potential to be a useful tool in achieving this demonstration, the evidence suggests that it is currently under-utilised. Therefore, a research study was performed with the aim of determining how self-inspection might be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PQS, the findings of which are outlined in this paper. The research methodologies employed to …

Assessing If Patients Would Benefit From Electronic Patient Information Leaflets (Epils), Maria Gormley Jan 2020

Assessing If Patients Would Benefit From Electronic Patient Information Leaflets (Epils), Maria Gormley

Level 3

The importance of the patient information leaflet (PIL) is underlined by the fact it is the only mandatory information that patients in Europe are legislated to receive with their medicines. Issues with the PIL in its current paper format have been well documented and in recent years there has been a push to move from these paper leaflets provided in the medicine carton to the information being made available as an electronic PIL (ePIL). This paper explores the potential negative and positive consequences of ePILs and their impact on patients. In a survey of almost 600 people it was shown …

Covid -19 And The Need For Robust Risk Control Strategies: Can Ich-Q9 Help?, Umit Kartoglu, Kevin O'Donnell, James Vesper Jan 2020

Covid -19 And The Need For Robust Risk Control Strategies: Can Ich-Q9 Help?, Umit Kartoglu, Kevin O'Donnell, James Vesper

Level 3

The COVID-19 pandemic requires robust risk control strategies; these should be multi-layered, science-based and subjected to effectiveness checks and formal reviews, to identify any unintended consequences. They should be supported by communications informed by an understanding of biases and risk perception. While developing such strategies for COVID-19 is difficult, given the scale of the problem and the diversity of stakeholders, the approach to Quality Risk Management (QRM) used by the pharmaceutical industry provides governments and public health officials with a ready-made framework to arrive at such control strategies. This approach is set out in the ICH Guideline on Quality Risk …

Understanding The Concept Of Formality In Quality Risk Management, Kevin O'Donnell, Deirdre Tobin, Stephanie Butler, Ghada Haddad, Donal Kelleher Jan 2020

Understanding The Concept Of Formality In Quality Risk Management, Kevin O'Donnell, Deirdre Tobin, Stephanie Butler, Ghada Haddad, Donal Kelleher

Level 3

Formality in Quality Risk Management (QRM) is an interesting concept. What makes a QRM activity ‘formal’ and what makes one ‘informal’? A simplistic viewpoint might be that formal is when a QRM tool is used to manage risks, and informal is when no such tool is used. But is it that simple? And are there different degrees of formality in QRM - is it a spectrum, or is it a binary concept? These questions are explored in this paper. Since the introduction of ICH Q9 in 2005, there have been discussions in the pharmaceutical industry and between regulators regarding the …

Simple Practices To Facilitate The Flow Of Valuable Tacit Knowledge During Biopharmaceutical Technology Transfer: A Case Study, Martin Lipa, Paige Kane, Anne Greene Jan 2020

Simple Practices To Facilitate The Flow Of Valuable Tacit Knowledge During Biopharmaceutical Technology Transfer: A Case Study, Martin Lipa, Paige Kane, Anne Greene

Level 3

The biopharmaceutical industry is regarded as a knowledge industry. However, in general, the industry is not effective at managing its knowledge as an asset across the product lifecycle, including during fundamental processes such as technology transfer. This is true in particular for tacit knowledge (e.g., know-how), where tacit knowledge it considered critical to the success of technology transfer, yet tacit knowledge transfer is somewhat ineffective. This can lead to the introduction of risk and other undesirable outcomes. This paper profiles a case study in tacit knowledge flow where a series of pragmatic practices were deployed during a complex …

The Magic And Metaphysics Of Shit :The Production Of Space And Digital Technology, David Capener Jan 2020

The Magic And Metaphysics Of Shit :The Production Of Space And Digital Technology, David Capener

Articles

Reading Henri Lefebvre alongside Bernard Stiegler, this paper explores the changes that have taken place to the production of space in our age of digital technology. Lefebvre sensed the radical changes taking place in society through the implementation of computational technologies. He asked a prescient question: How is this space being produced? Lefebvre was unable to foresee the significant changes to the actual mechanics of the production of space brought about by the third industrial revolution. A thinker who does do this is Bernard Stiegler who is interested in how new digital technologies change memory via tertiary mnemotechnical devices – …

Journal Articles

This paper reports on the research findings from a national project examining the issues in creating, sharing, using, and reusing open educational resources (OER) in the context of the development of open education in Ireland. One important aspect of the research was to investigate the potential for using existing institutional research repository infrastructure for the purpose of ingesting, managing, and discovering OER produced by academics. This approach would imply a move from previous strategy around a centralised repository at the national level to a devolved model that relies on institutional research repositories. The opportunities and potential barriers to the adoption …
