What Could Really Excellent Civic Engagement Look Like In A Technological University?, Catherine Bates, Sarah Gavra Boland, Catherine Lynch, Eoin Mooney
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
The purpose and motivation for civic engagement in an Irish Technological University is clear, as it achieves strategic objectives at a national level for both Higher Education and community sectors. The Technological Universities Act 2018 (http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2018/act/3/enacted/en/print) defines a Technological University (TU) as having a specific focus on community and business engagement, in addition to traditional university functions of teaching, learning, and research. Even the latter were required to be relevant at regional, national, and international levels. We argue that in line with this mission, technological universities should embed deep collaboration with community partners to work towards the UN Sustainable Development …
Stem Or Steam?: The Critical Role Of Arts In Technology Education (And The Critical Role Of Art In Technology), Etain Watson
Stem Or Steam?: The Critical Role Of Arts In Technology Education (And The Critical Role Of Art In Technology), Etain Watson
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
This paper outlines the interdependency between arts and technology, and explains the absolute necessity of keeping them together in our education systems. While arts and humanities can be successfully taught without technology, technology greatly enhances learning, and more technology is connected to arts in some way than any other use. According to PwC Chief Executive Luke Sayers, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are the solution to our workforce and growth challenge. Deckers suggests that all the levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy exist in order to get us to the highest level where decisions are made according to aesthetics. Both STEM …

Scientists studying seagrasses typically refer to their substratum as sediment, but recently researchers have begun to refer to it as a soil. However, the logistics of sampling underwater substrata and the fragility of these ecosystems challenge their study using pedological methods. Previous studies have reported geochemical processes within the rhizosphere that are compatible with pedogenesis. Seagrass substratum accumulated over the Recent Holocene and can reach several meters in thickness, but studies about deeper layers are scarce. This study is a first attempt to find sound evidence of vertical structuring in Posidonia oceanica deposits to serve as a basis for more …
Framing Economic Populist Rhetoric: The Economically Aggrieved Find A Voice, Jordan Baker
Framing Economic Populist Rhetoric: The Economically Aggrieved Find A Voice, Jordan Baker
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
The use of economic populist rhetoric seems to be a growing trend in America. Current literature situates a positive relationship between economic insecurity and support of populism, however the strength between the two is debated. Furthermore, much is focused on individual or country level economic insecurities as it relates to populist support, but little is focused on economic insecurities at levels in between the individual and countries. Even less is written on how often populists employ economic populist messaging, as it relates to the economic insecurities in which they are speaking. In order to determine if a relationship between the …

Socioeconomic Declinism And Right-Wing Populist Support, Kayley Rettberg
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper focuses on resolving the false dichotomy between the economic grievance and cultural backlash theses commonly presented in the literature on Right-Wing Populist attitude formation. It elaborates on Gidron and Hall’s social integration thesis by introducing the socioeconomic declinism thesis, which combines social, cultural, and economic factors when measuring Right-Wing populist attitudes. The interaction between the cultural backlash, social integration, and economic grievance theories provides a more holistic account of why right-wing populist attitudes form. This study pulls from the European Social Survey Round 8 to conduct a large-N statistical analysis of two compiled indices—the socioeconomic integration index and …

Background: Agitation among patients is a common and distressing behaviour across a variety of health care settings, particularly inpatient mental health. Unless recognised early and effectively managed it can lead to aggression and personal injury. The aim of this paper is to explore the experiences of mental health nurses in recognising and managing agitation in an inpatient mental health setting and the alignment of these experiences with best practice and person-centred care.
Methods: This study used a descriptive qualitative methodology. Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 20 nurses working in a mental health unit in …
Virtual Source Method For Modelling Fully Nonlinear Progressive Water Waves, Omar Ismael Khaleel Al-Tameemi
Virtual Source Method For Modelling Fully Nonlinear Progressive Water Waves, Omar Ismael Khaleel Al-Tameemi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis describes the development of the Virtual source method (VSM) to generate linear and nonlinear water waves in a numerical wave tank (NWT) as well as the investigation of its global accuracy. The method is based upon the integral equations derived by using Green’s identity with Laplace’s equation for the velocity potential. BEM and VSM schemes are tested against a number of benchmark scenarios. The first test is the standing wave in a rectangular numerical wave tank. The BEM has shown to be up to 1st order accurate in time while VSM is up to 4th-order. Nonlinear effect beyond …

Reflections In Systemic Family Psychotherapy And Adult Mental Health Services In The South East Of Ireland; And Beyond., Sean Edward Boland, Annette Byrne, Caroline Kavanagh, Sean O'Neill, Catherine Mahon, Kate Doran, Wille Hackett
Staff Articles and Research Papers
Systemic Family Psychotherapy (SFP) has been involved in the Carlow Kilkenny South Tipperary Adult Mental Services since 1994: in the main this involved meeting with service users, their families, couples and friends. However, from 2012 to 2019 five SFPs retired. This occurred when decisions were made by some Mental Health Management not to replace those SFPs that retired: thereby reducing the number of SFPs in the Southeast Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS); presumably due to funding difficulties at that time. However, as the months and years went by it became oblivious that two AMHSs were not going to employ SPTs. …
Tsunami Generation By Combined Fault Rupture And Landsliding, Natalia Perez Del Postigo Prieto
Tsunami Generation By Combined Fault Rupture And Landsliding, Natalia Perez Del Postigo Prieto
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Tsunami generation and propagation mechanisms need to be clearly understood in order to inform predictive models and improve coastal community preparedness. In the last two decades, unexpectedly large tsunamis have devastated localised coastal communities claiming thousands of lives (i.e. the Japan Tsunami of 2011 and Palu Bay Tsunami 2018). An earthquake primarily caused these devastating tsunamis, although the moderate earthquake magnitude for case of (Palu Bay Tsunami 2018), wave directivity and wave arrival time, and extremely large run-up heights in localised areas did not agree with predictions or later tsunami simulations. However, evidence has been later found to suggest that …

Gender-Related Differences In Flood Risk Perception And Behaviours Among Private Groundwater Users In The Republic Of Ireland, Cillian P. Mcdowell, Luisa Andrade, Eoin O'Neill, Kevin O'Malley, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul Hynds
Articles
Extreme weather events including flooding can have severe personal, infrastructural, and economic consequences, with recent evidence pointing to surface flooding as a pathway for the microbial contamination of private groundwater supplies. There is a pressing need for increasingly focused information and awareness campaigns to highlight the risks posed by extreme weather events and appropriate subsequent post-event actions. To date, little is known about the presence, directionality or magnitude of gender-related differences regarding flood risk awareness and behaviour among private groundwater users, a particularly susceptible sub-population due to an overarching paucity of infrastructural regulation across many regions. The current study investigated …

Knowledge And Behavioural Interventions To Reduce Human Health Risk From Private Groundwater Systems: A Global Review And Pooled Analysis Based On Development Status, S. Mooney, C. P. Mcdowell, J. O'Dwyer, P. D. Hynds
Articles
Groundwater contamination constitutes a significant health risk for private well users residing in rural areas. As the responsibility to safeguard rural private domestic groundwater typically rests with non-expert homeowners, interventions promoting risk mitigation and awareness represent the most viable means of preventing supply contamination. However, no global review or pooled analyses of these interventions has been undertaken to date. The current study sought to identify and quantify the performance of private well interventions from 1990 to 2018 via a global systematised review and pooled analysis. The PICO (Population-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome) approach was employed for literature identification. Relevant studies were statistically analysed across …

Risk Communication Approaches For Preventing Private Groundwater Contamination In The Republic Of Ireland: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Multidisciplinary Expert Opinion, S. Mooney, J. O'Dwyer, Paul Hynds
Articles
The mechanisms of private-well groundwater contamination are uniquely complex, necessitating a multisector communicative approach to risk management, premised on behaviour promotion. In countries such as the Republic of Ireland (ROI), characterised by oftentimes high groundwater contamination risk and concurrently limited user awareness, incorporation of multidisciplinary, ‘expert-based’ knowledge may facilitate design of evidence-based, practical interventions. Expert interviews represent an efficient form of expert consultation, enabling ease of access to niche information and comparison of procedure, but remain under-utilised within the groundwater management literature. In response, the current study elicited opinion from 50 experts across four broad categories (communications, engineering/science, policy, and …

Recently, the rapid development of automotive industries has given rise to large multidimensional datasets both in the production sites and after-sale services. Fault diagnostic systems are one of the services that the automotive industries provide. As a consequence of the rapid development of cars features, traditional rule-based diagnostic systems became very limited. Therefore, more sophisticated AI approaches need to be investigated towards more efficient solutions. In this paper, we focus on utilising deep learning so as to build a diagnostic system that is able to estimate the required services in an efficient and effective way. We propose a new model, …

Fire Performance Assessment Of Concrete With Fly Ash As The Supplemental Cementitious Material, Kunjie Fan
Fire Performance Assessment Of Concrete With Fly Ash As The Supplemental Cementitious Material, Kunjie Fan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Material properties of concrete at elevated temperatures are imperative to structural fire safety assessment. However, fire performance of concrete at high temperature is extremely complex since concrete is a heterogeneous material with considerable variations. When it is subjected to thermal exposure, such as fire, concrete undergoes a series of significant physicochemical changes. Its mechanical behaviour is not only temperature dependent, but also loading history dependent, during the heating process. Therefore, the characterization of concrete properties at elevated temperatures is very challenging and the development of reliable and accurate constitutive models remains an unaccomplished task. The main aim of this thesis …

The organizational challenges regarding implementations of technical security solutions are the major limiting factors for the adoption of the eHealth cloud. As such, the aim of this research will focus on developing a security maturity model, which will help healthcare organizations to provide a description of the application of their cloud security services, and an assessment and improvement of their cloud security services over time, …
User Profiling Based On Network Application Traffic Monitoring, Faisal Shaman
User Profiling Based On Network Application Traffic Monitoring, Faisal Shaman
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
There is increasing interest in identifying users and behaviour profiling from network traffic metadata for traffic engineering and security monitoring. However, user identification and behaviour profiling in real-time network management remains a challenge, as the activities and underlying interactions of network applications are constantly changing. User behaviour is also changing and adapting in parallel, due to changes in the online interaction environment. A major challenge is how to detect user activity among generic network traffic in terms of identifying the user and his/her changing behaviour over time. Another issue is that relying only on computer network information (Internet Protocol [IP] …

Effective Online Safety Awareness For Young People In Less Developed Countries, Kona Ramesswar Kona Herkanaidu
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
In less developed countries (LDCs) there is a research deficit on the positive and negative aspects of their respective emerging digital cultures. Education programmes that seek to raise awareness of online safety, needs to be based on evidence and not simply transposed from other countries as the issues involved may be very different. Thailand, in particular, has very little data that can be used to create meaningful educational material. This was determined after a thorough literature review which found that most of the research has been carried out in the advanced economies of North America, Europe and Australasia. By contrast …
Multi-Modal Personalisation In Long-Term Human-Robot Interaction, Bahar Irfan
Multi-Modal Personalisation In Long-Term Human-Robot Interaction, Bahar Irfan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
While short-term interactions with robots benefit from the novelty effect, long-term interactions can suffer from a decrease in user interest and engagement. Based on the previous research within Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), the thesis presented here is that user experience in long-term human-robot interactions can be improved by personalising the interaction through recognising users and recalling previously learned information. User recognition is the first step towards personalising the interaction, however, there does not exist a reliable user recognition method for fully autonomous user recognition in long- term HRI for real-world applications. Correspondingly, this thesis proposes a Multi-modal Incremental Bayesian Network (MMIBN) …

Identity As A Service: An Adaptive Security Infrastructure And Privacy-Preserving User Identity For The Cloud Environment, Hoang Tri Vo
Identity As A Service: An Adaptive Security Infrastructure And Privacy-Preserving User Identity For The Cloud Environment, Hoang Tri Vo
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
In recent years, enterprise applications have begun to migrate from a local hosting to a cloud provider and may have established a business-to-business relationship with each other manually. Adaptation of existing applications requires substantial implementation changes in individual architectural components. Existing work has focused on migrating the applications with functional and non-functional aspects. However, none of them has focused so far on the adaptation of the required security infrastructure. On the other hand, users may store their Personal Identifiable Information (PII) in the cloud environment so that cloud services may access and use it on demand. Although cloud services specify …
An Adaptable Interleaved Dc-Dc Boost Converter, Stuart Macveigh
An Adaptable Interleaved Dc-Dc Boost Converter, Stuart Macveigh
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
A.H. Weinberg presented his classic boost topology in his 1974 publication intended for use in satellites. It comprises minimal external components and uses multiple coupled coil systems to provide a boost of up to 2x. Its simplicity makes it inherently robust and reliable as minimal components means lower chance of failure. While its simplicity makes it attractive it has limited boost capability which makes it unsuitable for many modern day applications. No significant investigation has been carried out on adapting the Weinberg topology for high boost operation so far as can be ascertained. An investigation into adapting the Weinberg converter …
How Can Higher Education Institutions Utilise Community Engagement To Support The Learning Of Enterprising Behaviour In Disadvantaged Communities?, Emma O'Brien
Doctoral
It is broadly agreed that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in economic and societal development. Supporting entrepreneurship has become a global phenomenon, and governments and policy makers have paid increasing attention to it. Yet, despite such policy developments, the OCED (2019) has identified that several communities (including women, youth, seniors, unemployed and immigrants) remain disadvantaged and under-represented in entrepreneurial activity. Inclusive entrepreneurship policies recognise the significant economic and social contribution these communities could make if greater encouragement and appropriate support was offered. This study investigates the supportive role that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can play in strengthening social inclusion through …

Entrepreneurial Process Studies Using Insider Action Research: Opportunities & Challenges For Entrepreneurship Scholarship, Kisito Futonge Nzembayie, Anthony Paul Buckley
Entrepreneurial Process Studies Using Insider Action Research: Opportunities & Challenges For Entrepreneurship Scholarship, Kisito Futonge Nzembayie, Anthony Paul Buckley
Articles
This paper examines the opportunities and challenges of adopting Insider Action Research (IAR) in entrepreneurial process studies. It employs a critical reflexive and narrative approach in examining our own lived experience in a real-time digital entrepreneurial journey spanning three years while triangulating it with experiential knowledge in another role as dissertation supervisors. Our live case illustrates that IAR, when it combines reflective practice, cooperative inquiry and design science, represents a suitable but under-exploited methodology for entrepreneurship scholarship. We build on this knowledge to offer a model for incorporating this methodology in entrepreneurship research and education. Consequently, we contribute towards responding …

Synthesis And Manufacture Of High Performance Fa-Ggbs-Hmns Based Geopolymer Concrete, Aissa Bouaissi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Geopolymer has received great attention in recent years as a new material that could replace Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) for producing concrete. Geopolymer uses the raw materials rich in aluminium and silicon, which are activated by alkaline solutions to formulate the binder. It has been proven that the geopolymer could be a material capable of providing high-quality properties and having less environmental impact. This research project aims to investigate the capability for producing a geopolymer concrete (GPC) mainly based on the combination of various by-product materials (fly ash, (FA), ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and high-magnesium nickel slag (HMNS)) at …
