Proposing A Constructivist Approach To Resolving Trade Conflicts Under The African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (Afcfta): A Cross-Jurisdictional Analysis, Oluwayesi Sanni Oct 2020

Proposing A Constructivist Approach To Resolving Trade Conflicts Under The African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (Afcfta): A Cross-Jurisdictional Analysis, Oluwayesi Sanni

LLM Theses

Essentially a research of an interdisciplinary nature, this thesis seeks to carefully combine budding thoughts from two different areas of scholarship in order to present a unique underlying perspective. On the one hand, there is the study of conflict and its resolution from such intrinsic standpoint as to appreciate it as constitutive of the Society with the aim of achieving more wholesome outcomes that accentuates the uniqueness of each society. On the other hand, the recent coming to force of AfCFTA has left so much for scholars to grapple with, including how its dispute settlement regime could reflect more on …

Facing The Challenge Of Genetic Counselors' Need For Rapid Continuing Education About Genomic Technologies, Kelly D. Farwell Hagman, Devon Lamb Thrush, Samantha Freeze, Darnelle L. Dorsainville, Jennifer Eichmeyer, Kimberly C. Banks, Genomic Technologies Special Interest Group Of The National Society Of Genetic Counselors

Genetic Counseling Faculty Publications and Presentations

The last couple of decades have seen the rapid advancement of genomic technologies (GT) and their equally rapid adoption into clinical testing. Regardless of specialty, all genetic counselors are unified by the fundamental goal to aid in diagnosing patient's genetic disease underscoring the importance for genetic counselors to maintain an in-depth understanding of GT. The National Society of Genetic Counselors’ (NSGC) GT Special Interest Group conducted an online survey of NSGC members to assess current genomic technologies knowledge gaps. A total of 171 individuals from a variety of primary work settings completed the survey sufficiently to be included in the …

The Body In Isolation: The Physical Health Impacts Of Incarceration In Solitary Confinement, Justin D. Strong, Keramet Reiter, Gabriela Gonzalez, Rebecca Tublitz, Dallas Augustine, Melissa Barragan, Kelsie Chesnut, Pasha Dashtgard, Natalie Pifer, Thomas R. Blair

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

We examine how solitary confinement correlates with self-reported adverse physical health outcomes, and how such outcomes extend the understanding of the health disparities associated with incarceration. Using a mixed methods approach, we find that solitary confinement is associated not just with mental, but also with physical health problems. Given the disproportionate use of solitary among incarcerated people of color, these symptoms are most likely to affect those populations. Drawing from a random sample of prisoners (n = 106) in long-term solitary confinement in the Washington State Department of Corrections in 2017, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews; Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale …

Role Of Peroxiredoxins In Protecting Against Cardiovascular And Related Disorders, Y R. Li, Hong Zhu, Igor Danelisen Oct 2020

Role Of Peroxiredoxins In Protecting Against Cardiovascular And Related Disorders, Y R. Li, Hong Zhu, Igor Danelisen

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Peroxiredoxin (Prx) refers to a family of thiol-dependent peroxidases that decompose hydrogen peroxide, lipid hydroperoxides, as well as peroxynitrite, and protect against oxidative and inflammatory stress. There are six mammalian Prx isozymes (Prx1-6), classified as typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys, or 1-Cys Prxs based on the mechanism and the number of cysteine residues involved during catalysis. In addition to their well-established peroxide-scavenging activity, some Prxs also participate in the regulation of various cell signaling pathways. Extensive animal studies employing primarily gene knockout models provide substantial evidence supporting a critical protective role of Prxs in various disease processes involving oxidative and inflammatory …

Asymmetric Benefits Of A Heterospecific Breeding Association Vary With Habitat, Conspecific Abundance And Breeding Stage, Rose J. Swift, Michael J. Anteau, Erin A. Roche, Mark H. Sherfy, Dustin L. Toy, Megan M. Ring Oct 2020

Asymmetric Benefits Of A Heterospecific Breeding Association Vary With Habitat, Conspecific Abundance And Breeding Stage, Rose J. Swift, Michael J. Anteau, Erin A. Roche, Mark H. Sherfy, Dustin L. Toy, Megan M. Ring

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Heterospecific breeding associations may benefit individuals by mitigating predation risk but may also create costs if they increase competition for resources or are more easily detectable by predators. Our understanding of the interactions among hetero- and conspecifics is often lacking in mixed species colonies. Here, we test how the presence of hetero- and conspecifics influence nest and chick survival for two listed (under the U.S. Endangered Species Act) migratory species breeding on the Missouri River, USA. We monitored 2507 piping plover Charadrius melodus nests and 3245 chicks as well as 1060 least tern Sternula antillarum nests and 1374 chicks on …

The Impact Of Autonomous Vehicles On Urban Land Use Patterns, Gregory M. Stein Oct 2020

The Impact Of Autonomous Vehicles On Urban Land Use Patterns, Gregory M. Stein

Florida State University Law Review

Autonomous vehicles are coming. The only questions are how quickly they will arrive, how we will manage the years when they share the road with conventional vehicles, and how the legal system will address the issues they raise. This Article examines the impact the autonomous vehicle revolution will have on urban land use patterns. Autonomous vehicles will transform the use of land and the law governing that valuable land. Automobiles will drop passengers off and then drive themselves to remote parking areas, reducing the need for downtown parking. These vehicles will create the need for substantial changes in roadway design. …

The Ecological Avant-Garde: Arkady Fiedler’S The River Of Singing Fish, Ida Day Oct 2020

The Ecological Avant-Garde: Arkady Fiedler’S The River Of Singing Fish, Ida Day

Modern Languages Faculty Research

Even among his extraordinary generation of Polish avant-garde literary and artistic figures, Arkady Fiedler (1894–1985) stands out as one of the most original and creative authors. His travel reportage from the experimental inter-war period of the 1920s and 1930 is an example of an avant-garde production—ahead of its time, eclectic, and exploring new ideas. As avantgarde is a very broad term referring to a variety of experimental literary and artistic techniques, I focus on Fiedler’s innovative and ethical approach to the natural world. This essay explores how the historical changes of the early twentieth century, affecting literature, theater, and art, …
