Age And Genetic Background Modify Hybrid Male Sterility In House Mice., Samuel J Widmayer, Mary Ann Handel, David L Aylor

Faculty Research 2020

Hybrid male sterility (HMS) contributes to reproductive isolation commonly observed among house mouse (Mus musculus) subspecies, both in the wild and in laboratory crosses. Incompatibilities involving specific Prdm9 alleles and certain Chromosome (Chr) X genotypes are known determinants of fertility and HMS, and previous work in the field has demonstrated that genetic background modifies these two major loci. We constructed hybrids that have identical genotypes at Prdm9 and identical X chromosomes, but differ widely across the rest of the genome. In each case, we crossed female PWK/PhJ mice representative of the M. m. musculus subspecies to males from …

Most animal species operate according to a 24-h period set by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. The rhythmic activity of the SCN modulates hippocampal-dependent memory, but the molecular and cellular mechanisms that account for this effect remain largely unknown. Here, we identify cell-type-specific structural and functional changes that occur with circadian rhythmicity in neurons and astrocytes in hippocampal area CA1. Pyramidal neurons change the surface expression of NMDA receptors. Astrocytes change their proximity to synapses. Together, these phenomena alter glutamate clearance, receptor activation, and integration of temporally clustered excitatory synaptic inputs, ultimately shaping hippocampal-dependent learning in vivo. …

Against Eating Humanely-Raised Meat: Revisiting Fred’S Basement, Jonathan Spelman Oct 2020

Against Eating Humanely-Raised Meat: Revisiting Fred’S Basement, Jonathan Spelman

Philosophy and Religion Faculty Scholarship

In “Puppies, Pigs, and People: Eating Meat and Marginal Cases,” Alastair Norcross uses a thought experiment he calls “Fred’s Basement” to argue that consuming factory-farmed meat is morally equivalent to torturing and killing puppies to enjoy the taste of chocolate. Thus, he concludes that consuming factory-farmed meat is morally wrong. Although Norcross leaves open the possibility that consuming humanely-raised meat is permissible, I contend that his basic argumentative approach rules it out. In this paper, then, I extend Norcross’ thought experiment in hopes of convincing readers that consuming humanely-raised meat is morally wrong.

The Role Of Rapid Diagnostic Point Of Care Igg/Igm Antibody Tests In The Diagnosis Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection, Nishita Tripathi, Daniya Sheikh, Dawn Balcom Oct 2020

The Role Of Rapid Diagnostic Point Of Care Igg/Igm Antibody Tests In The Diagnosis Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection, Nishita Tripathi, Daniya Sheikh, Dawn Balcom

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

Background: Current testing of symptomatic patients for SARS-CoV-2 involves the use of nucleic acid amplification tests, also known as genetic, RNA, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), to detect viral RNA. The initial use of point of care (POC) antibody tests, also known as serological tests, in the management of SARS-CoV-2 infection was limited. In this review, we determine the significance of POC antibody serological tests and explore their possible role in the diagnosis and management of patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Methods: A literature search was conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Embase, supplemented by searching the Centers for …

School of Information Technology and Computing

Introducing this special issue of the Journal of Literacy and Technology, the second part of the two-part special issues focusing on the COVID-19 “suddenly online” transition to remote/virtual eLearning modalities during the Spring of 2020. This article introduces the emergency voices from the field arising from the COVID-19 “suddenly online” transition to remote/virtual eLearning modalities during the Spring of 2020. This rare, and perhaps “once in a lifetime” momentous COVID-19 pandemic induced a paradigmatic shift in teaching and learning modalities. The first-hand eyewitness accounts which emerged from the turbulent months of the “suddenly online” transition in education are important to …

An Interface: An Architecture That Stitches Species, Suren Sivaram

Architecture Thesis Prep

Materialized, architecture could be considered as an interface that promotes and preserves biodiversity within a site, as “all life is bound into dynamic and interrelated processes of codependency.” In addition, this thesis posits that architecture as an interface may act representationally to raise awareness of the need to embrace biodiversity and to sustain humanity. In Greater Perfections, Hunt suggests, “The garden will … be distinguished in various ways from the adjacent territories in which it is set … it will be set apart by the greater extent, scope, and variety of its design and internal organization”. Stitching elements of its …

OEWRI Technical Reports

In 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) began the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative (MRBI) to work with landowners to implement voluntary conservation practices designed to reduce nutrients entering the Gulf of Mexico. The goal of the MRBI program is to improve water quality, restore wetlands, and enhance wildlife habitat while ensuring economic viability of agricultural lands in high-priority watersheds within the Mississippi Basin (USDA, 2017). However, watershed-scale evaluations identifying specific pollution sources and the conservation practices needed to improve water quality are needed to aid field office staff responsible for working …

Marine Antithrombotics, Rohini Dwivedi, Vitor H. Pomin Oct 2020

Marine Antithrombotics, Rohini Dwivedi, Vitor H. Pomin

Faculty and Student Publications

Thrombosis remains a prime reason of mortality worldwide. With the available antithrombotic drugs, bleeding remains the major downside of current treatments. This raises a clinical concern for all patients undergoing antithrombotic therapy. Novel antithrombotics from marine sources offer a promising therapeutic alternative to this pathology. However, for any potential new molecule to be introduced as a real alternative to existing drugs, the exhibition of comparable anticoagulant potential with minimal off-target effects must be achieved. The relevance of marine antithrombotics, particularly sulfated polysaccharides, is largely due to their unique mechanisms of action and lack of bleeding. There have been many investigations …
