Drawing Ambulatory Cartographies: Understanding Urban Experience Through Walking, Bonnie Yu
Drawing Ambulatory Cartographies: Understanding Urban Experience Through Walking, Bonnie Yu
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis contends that the act of walking, as a way of seeing, being, and understanding in the city, can be a form of urban intervention that enables the transformation of space by allowing individuals to imbue spaces with meaning. The act of walking, in conjunction with mapping practices, can be a critical tool for understanding urban space, acting as a nomadic architecture that works to subvert and smooth the striated space of the city.
This project will investigate the ways in which urban landscape representation, in particular the processes and performances of walking-based mapping practices, can reveal and assert …

An Augmented Reality Multimedia Learning Platform Assisting Online Lecture Delivery Of Engineering Classes: An Hvac Course, Huojan Yang, Jiaming Zhao, Tianyi Liang, Siqing Zheng, Nikolas R. Kukert, Jun Kong
ASEE North Midwest Section Annual Conference 2020 Publications
Background: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has recently resulted in an emergent shift of traditional instruction to (presumably temporary) online delivery, and many students were not able to participate in practical activities (e.g., laboratory experiments) due to inaccessible or unavailable “brick and mortar” laboratories. Purpose: This works-in-progress paper developed a multimedia learning platform with virtual laboratory modules through an Augmented Reality (AR) environment, where virtual objects (augmented components) are superimposed onto a real learning setting during online lecture instruction. Specifically, to facilitate students’ gaining practical skills, a library of virtual objects were established for the main physical components or systems related …

Data And Analysis Toolbox For Modeling The Nexus Of Food, Energy, And Water, Mojtaba Sadegh, Arvin Farid
Data And Analysis Toolbox For Modeling The Nexus Of Food, Energy, And Water, Mojtaba Sadegh, Arvin Farid
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Energy, water, and food resources are highly interdependent. Agricultural irrigation accounts for 84% of global consumptive freshwater use, the food supply chain demands up to 30% of global primary energy use, and roughly 80% of global electricity generation depends on water for cooling (an average of nearly 100 L of water withdrawn per kWh). Improving understanding of the complex interactions of this resource nexus is, therefore, a top priority for human well-being, sustainable development, and policymaking. Here, we present an interactive analysis toolbox, Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water (NeFEW), that synthesizes available global data to …
Modeling Self-Organization In Human Crowds, Trenton D. Wirth
Modeling Self-Organization In Human Crowds, Trenton D. Wirth
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
Developing an understanding of human crowd movement is critical for optimizing crowd safety, both on the streets and in buildings. It is well understood from the study of animal collective motion that individuals are better able coordinate and respond to perturbations by perceiving movements from their neighbors (Ballerini et al., 2008; Couzin & Krause, 2003; Partridge, 1982). Thus, modeling and simulating human crowd behavior depends on the modeler’s ability to accurately characterize how an individual is influenced by his or her neighbors (Ballerini et al., 2008); i.e., identifying the local rules of engagement that lead to self-organization (Rio et al., …

Clearing Cluster Munition Remnants 2020, Mine Action Review
Clearing Cluster Munition Remnants 2020, Mine Action Review
Global CWD Repository
Key Findings:
- In the 10 years since the entry into force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) in 2020, a total of more than 766 square kilometres of cluster munition-contaminated area has been cleared. During survey, clearance, and spot task operations nearly one million unexploded submunitions have been destroyed. Countless lives and limbs have undoubtedly been saved as a direct result, as well as the broader contribution to development.
- In 2019 alone, a global total of more than 130 square kilometres was cleared of cluster munition remnants (CMR), a new record, beating the previous high (in 2018) by nearly …

License To Offend: How The Nlra Shields Perpetrators Of Discrimination In The Workplace, Molly Gibbons
License To Offend: How The Nlra Shields Perpetrators Of Discrimination In The Workplace, Molly Gibbons
Washington Law Review
Congress established the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB or the Board) to enforce the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA or the Act) and ensure fair labor practices in workplaces across the United States. The NLRA protects employees from discipline while engaging in union activity. Under the NLRA, employers and unions must collectively bargain in good faith. Either party may only walk away from the table when another party’s conduct makes good faith bargaining impossible. However, the NLRB’s determination of what conduct constitutes bad faith bargaining and protected union speech is inconsistent with federal anti- discrimination laws. This discrepancy means employers …

Skeletons In My Closet: A Collection Of Personal Essays And Short Fiction, Macey Howell
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
My thesis will be a collection of personal essays and short fiction centered on examining the ties between fashion and identity and told through a Gothic literary tradition. I seek to explore my identity by examining my personal style using the mode of the Gothic. Through this project, I will encapsulate my sense of style, and therefore my sense of self, in words and explore the nuances of my identity through creative nonfiction and fiction.
I have a distinct sense of style that is inseparable from my identity as a woman, as an artist, as a human drawn to beauty …

Economic Vulnerabilities Of Fishing-Dependent Households Around Laguna Lake, Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Economic Vulnerabilities Of Fishing-Dependent Households Around Laguna Lake, Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Economics Department Faculty Publications
The study characterizes the mainly subsistence fishing communities surrounding Laguna Lake and provides empirical evidence of the economic deprivation that they are experiencing using survey data. Following a multi-dimensional approach, the paper focuses on consumption expenditures as the prime indicator of economic well-being – together with assets ownership, financial behavior, and social engagements. Regression analyses are conducted to identify the factors underlying consumption and to determine how different forms of household capital (physical, financial, and social) and fishing activities affect the capacity to generate income or livelihood. The study finds that: 1) food consumption (mainly rice) accounts for half of …

Covid-19 And Nutrition, Emelia Zukowski
Covid-19 And Nutrition, Emelia Zukowski
Honors Senior Capstone Projects
Many individuals who contract COVID-19 and experience poor outcomes are also found to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals. As a result, many nutrients have been related to improved outcomes for patients suffering from COVID-19. While it is not proven that increased intake of any one vitamin or mineral can prevent COVID-19, the supplementation of specific vitamins or minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium could impact the risk of getting COVID-19 and the severity of cases of COVID-19. Positive benefits are expected from this relationship because certain vitamins and minerals have been known to support …

Diplomacy Syllabi
This course examines the nature of conflict, how conflict escalates and de-escalates, and the role of peacemaking and peacekeeping in assisting de-escalation. The course will, draw on research and experiences from a range of contexts, but will focus on Lebanon as a continuous case study. The course is 'practice-focused' in that it will provide students with practical tools for assessing conflicts and planning peacemaking and peacekeeping interventions.
