In The Blink Of An Eye: Reading Mental States From Briefly Presented Eye Regions, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Andrew J. Logan, Claus Christian Carbon, Joshua T. Loong, Ian Gold

School of Health Professions

Faces provide not only cues to an individual’s identity, age, gender, and ethnicity but also insight into their mental states. The aim was to investigate the temporal aspects of processing of facial expressions of complex mental states for very short presentation times ranging from 12.5 to 100 ms in a four-alternative forced choice paradigm based on Reading the Mind in the Eyes test. Results show that participants are able to recognise very subtle differences between facial expressions; performance is better than chance, even for the shortest presentation time. Importantly, we show for the first time that observers can recognise these …

Diet Analysis Of Gastrotricha, Mikhail Anfinson Oct 2020

Diet Analysis Of Gastrotricha, Mikhail Anfinson

S.U.R.E Posters

The phylum Gastrotricha is comprised of small aquatic organisms that live in between sand grains. It has been shown that meiofauna communities can play valuable roles in ecosystems and serve as a food source for animals higher up the trophic levels. However, little is known about their own feeding behavior which this study is concerned about. Over the summer developments were made in the methodical sections for diet diagnostic PCR for marine bacterial strains, unicellular marine eukaryotes, and investigating different types of immunofluorescence for marine bacteria. We also plan at looking at the number of sarcomeres within the pharynx of …

A Low Risk Successful Treatment For Human Infertility With A Multisource Herbal Preparation In Ayurvedic Medicine: A Case Study From Sri Lanka, Lechuman Sarvananda, Menusha Umayangani, Ajith Janaka Karunarathna, Amal D. Premarathna, Samantha C. Karunarathna Oct 2020

A Low Risk Successful Treatment For Human Infertility With A Multisource Herbal Preparation In Ayurvedic Medicine: A Case Study From Sri Lanka, Lechuman Sarvananda, Menusha Umayangani, Ajith Janaka Karunarathna, Amal D. Premarathna, Samantha C. Karunarathna

Health Sciences

Worldwide statistics show 8-12% of married couples have infertility problems. Between 80-90% of these were reported due to the male, and 10% due to the female. Orthodox western treatments are expensive and have side effects, so we tried an Ayurvedic regime, with its lower costs and fewer side effects. Fifteen infertile couples were selected for the treatment; of the ten completed the treatment, whilst five dropped out. We recommended a low-stress lifestyle, avoiding acidic foods such as pineapple, tomato, fizzy drinks, and fast foods, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco. Those who continued the course became pregnant within three months. …

Celebrity 2.0: Lil Miquela And The Rise Of A Virtual Star System, Jenna M. Drenten, Gillian Brooks Oct 2020

Celebrity 2.0: Lil Miquela And The Rise Of A Virtual Star System, Jenna M. Drenten, Gillian Brooks

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this essay, we interrogate the boundary between the highly controlled Hollywood celebrity star system and the highly liberated social media influencer. By examining the case of Lil Miquela, a virtual social media influencer created through computer-generated imagery (CGI), we introduce the notion of a re-imagined virtual star system, which is defined by techno-human cultural intermediaries and the non-agentic persona as property. The virtual star system calls attention to contradictions between the real and the artifice and questions the significance of authenticity in both celebrity practice and the influencer industry.

Difficulty And Distance In Educational Encounters With Historical Violence, Grant Scribner Oct 2020

Difficulty And Distance In Educational Encounters With Historical Violence, Grant Scribner

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

This article reviews recent literature that addresses historical violence, difficult history, and the production of historical distance in teaching and learning about past violence. The author argues that based on the literature, the processes by which certain violent histories become “difficult” while others are aestheticized deserve greater attention. As violent histories become more or less difficult, the production of nuanced, contextually contingent historical distances may have serious implications for teachers’ pedagogical decisions as well as students’ reactions and understanding. The author argues further that historical violence not considered difficult or traumatic in a given moment and context deserves greater attention …

Violence In Healthcare Settings During The Covid-19 Pandemic: The Case Of Algerian Hospitals, Aissaoui Nasreddine Oct 2020

Violence In Healthcare Settings During The Covid-19 Pandemic: The Case Of Algerian Hospitals, Aissaoui Nasreddine

Health Sciences

The violence in health care settings is, at the moment, a subject of research which often concerns all the countries of the world, since this phenomenon is increasing in times of turbulence that can shake up the organization of the health system, as well as periods of crisis which can hamper the normal course of healthcare facilities. At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, violence in healthcare settings in Algeria took a rather worrying turn. So we have confined ourselves to looking for the parties responsible for this violence, without venturing to follow the classic path which sheds light exclusively …

Cor Triatriatum Sinister In A 25-Year-Old Patient: A Case Report, Ketak Nagare, Balaji Aironi, Ninad Kotkar, Abhishek Joshi, Uday Jadhav Oct 2020

Cor Triatriatum Sinister In A 25-Year-Old Patient: A Case Report, Ketak Nagare, Balaji Aironi, Ninad Kotkar, Abhishek Joshi, Uday Jadhav

Health Sciences

Cor triatriatum sinister is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly in which a fibromuscular membrane divides the left atrium into 2 chambers. It is even rarer when present at an adult age. Symptoms and presentation of the patient depend on the size of the opening in the membrane through which 2 chambers of left atrium communicate with each other. Cor triatriatum sinister rarely remains asymptomatic till adulthood. In adults, symptoms of Cor triatriatum sinister mimic the symptoms of mitral stenosis. Corrective surgery is the treatment of choice, but when it presents as an emergency case especially at an early age, balloon …

The Frailty Of The Invincible, Donatella Tramontano Oct 2020

The Frailty Of The Invincible, Donatella Tramontano

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the frailty of our societies from too many points of view to look away. We need to understand why we were all caught unprepared. On the one hand, we have all short memories. As we forget too quickly, we were unable to recognize key factors influencing response and preparedness to public health threats. For many years, economic evaluation pushed governments all over the world to cut resources for public health systems, with COVID-19 pandemic the question arises: do we spend too much or too little on health care? What is the right amount to spend …

Are Animal Machines? Gómez Pereira And Descartes On Animal Minds, Enrique Chávez-Arvizo Oct 2020

Are Animal Machines? Gómez Pereira And Descartes On Animal Minds, Enrique Chávez-Arvizo

Western Ontario Early Modern Philosophy (WOEMP) Online Events

Forty two years before Descartes’ birth, in his Antoniana Margarita (Medina del Campo, 1554), Spanish physician and philosopher Gómez Pereira explicitly argues the following assertions:

(1) Animals lack reason

(2) Animals lack understanding

(3) Animals do not think

(4) Animals cannot feel (Bruta non sentire)

(5) Animals cannot see as we do

(6) Animals are machines

(7) Animals have no rational soul

(8) Animals have no indivisible soul

(9) Animals have no language

The above claims on animal automatism are commonly thought to have originated with Descartes. In this paper I will expound Gómez Pereira’s arguments, contra the School and …

Method For Experimental Modeling Of Diabetic Angiopathy, Alisher O. Okhunov, Inayat S. Sattarov, Feruza Kh. Inoyatova, Shukhrat R. Razzakov

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

These methods of modeling diabetic microangiopathy have their own distinctive aspects, separated by the mechanisms of their reproduction. Reproduction of the model of diabetes mellitus, taking into account the pathogenetic significance of the role of sorbitol in the development of angiopathy, allows us to obtain the possibility of studying microangiopathy at a reliable level.

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

At present, the factor of healthy nutrition is recognized as one of the key components of the general strategy of the WHO, according to which 60% of the causes of death of people are directly related to nutritional problems. The food formula of the 21st century is constantly consuming the products with desired properties (functional food products) and biologically active food additives along with traditional natural food products. The purpose of this work is to study the nutritional and biological values of the water fortifier "Marjon", in order to find the most rational ways to utilize it in human nutrition. …

Public And Private (Dis)Incentives For Animal Identification, Elliott James Dennis Oct 2020

Public And Private (Dis)Incentives For Animal Identification, Elliott James Dennis

Extension Farm and Ranch Management News

First paragraph:

There has been a growing global trend towards automating data collection and using captured data to inform decision-making. This has spilled over into the beef complex where packers, feedlots, and cow-calf producers seek to leverage information on animal performance, health, and welfare. The technology to automate data collection, commonly advocated as a way to manage and identify cattle, diverges from the traditional means of identifying cattle through brands. This article reviews how common different animal identification practices are for feedlots and cow-calf producers in the United States and the public and private (dis)incentives for animal identification.
