Atlas In Transit, Becky Thompson Mfa
Atlas In Transit, Becky Thompson Mfa
All Student Scholarship
Atlas in Transit is a collection of poems circling around the precarity and resilience of people in transit from Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine, Somalia and other countries to Greece beginning in 2015 in what became the biggest forced migration in the world since WWII. The collection offers witness poems about people fleeing their homelands within a larger historical context, with nods to Sappho, Minoan pots, Byzantine and Ottoman history, the Genocide of 1922, and silhouettes crossing the burning sun. Many poems rely upon formal forms—villanelle, terza rima, ghazal, haiku— as well as broken-step couplets, found conversations, and redacted documents. The poems …

The longstanding problems of relying on a market response to a pandemic are becoming readily apparent in the United States, which has quickly become the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak. The problems are particularly pronounced in pharmaceutical markets, where we are pinning our hopes for both cures and vaccines. In previous work we have shown how characteristics of healthcare markets in the United States create a divergence between the private incentives of for-profit companies and public health needs, leading to sub-optimal health outcomes in what is a uniquely market-driven healthcare system. In this Essay, written as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, …
Anthropology And Conservation, Nicolas Lainé
Anthropology And Conservation, Nicolas Lainé
Animal Sentience
Baker & Winkler make a welcome contribution to elephant conservation in Thailand in advocating a role for joint human/elephant labor and local expertise in rewilding. Their argument would benefit, however, if it drew more upon the local ethnographic evidence. Ethnocentric notions such as “welfare” and “wellbeing” may not fit into the local perception of pachyderms.

The nature, causes, and effects of immediate conscious leisure experiences have long been central interests of scholars. Significant contributions to the field include Abraham Maslow’s studies of ecstasy and peak experience, Sigmund Koch’s descriptions of two forms of consciousness, John Neulinger’s classification of immediate conscious experiences based on their motivational contexts, Michael J. Ellis’ application of arousal theory to play, Howard and Diane Tinsley’s theory of the leisure experience, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s career of inquiry into the “flow” phenomenon, and recently, the theory of structured experience (TSE). This paper reviews research on leisure as immediate conscious experience relating to development of …
Which Moses? Jewish Background Of Jesus' Transfiguration, Andrei Orlov
Which Moses? Jewish Background Of Jesus' Transfiguration, Andrei Orlov
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
An importance of Mosaic traditions for understanding of Jesus’ transiguration has been long noticed by many distinguished students of the New Testament. While the role of Mosaic motifs found in the Hebrew Bible has been duly acknowledged, often in these studies one can see a glaring neglect for extra-biblical Mosaic developments that might also constituted a conceptual background of Jesus’ metamorphosis on the mountain. The puropse of this paper is to explore early para-biblical traditions in which the son of Amraam was understood not merely as a prophet, but as a divine figure.

A Choice Of Color: Does Lingerie Color Affect Perceived Attractiveness And Evolutionary Fitness?, Samantha Luzietti, T. Joel Wade
Faculty Journal Articles
Prior research examining the effect of color on perceived attractiveness is equivocal. Also, no research has examined how the color of lingerie affects perceptions. This research explored the effect of the color of lingerie that a woman was wearing on individuals’ perceptions of her attractiveness and evolutionary fitness. Three colors of lingerie were used in this study: Black lingerie, Red lingerie, and White lingerie. These images were presented to 72 men and 82 women. Participants rated the woman’s perceived physical attractiveness, sexual attractiveness, trustworthiness, nurturance, masculinity, femininity, dominance, healthiness, enthusiasm, social competence, affectionateness, intelligence, short term mate potential, long term …
Do Arthropods Respond To Noxious Stimuli Purely By Reflex?, Robert W. Elwood
Do Arthropods Respond To Noxious Stimuli Purely By Reflex?, Robert W. Elwood
Animal Sentience
Mikhalevich & Powell (2020) argue that it is wrong to dismiss the idea of sentience in invertebrates. Here, I expand on the evidence for crustaceans responding to noxious stimuli in ways that are not explained by mere reflexes, and that are consistent with pain. I consider the idea that male praying mantids must not feel pain because they may continue to mate whilst being consumed by the female. I finish with thoughts about the idea that because robots may be constructed to act as if they experience pain, the argument that animals might experience pain is diminished.
Catalytic Conversion Of Chitin To Lactic Acid In Hot-Compressed Water, Kodchakon Kun-Asa
Catalytic Conversion Of Chitin To Lactic Acid In Hot-Compressed Water, Kodchakon Kun-Asa
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chitin is the second most available polysaccharide after cellulose. Chitin and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine polysaccharide, can be converted to valuable products by using homogeneous catalysis, most of the chitin generated by food processing is treated as industrial waste. For chitin conversion to useful chemicals has been investigated less than cellulose conversion. Therefore, in this research, chitin conversion was investigated. The result was divided into four part. The first part, the result showed that ball milled pretreatment could increase the conversion of chitin, which indicated that the crystallinity of the chitin had been reduced by the ball milled pretreatment. In the second part, …

The Influence Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Fcgriib -/- Lupus Mice, Kanyarat Udompornpitak
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) through polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the major components of particulate matter at 2.5 micron (PM2.5) in the polluted air, might aggravate inflammation and lupus activity. Hence, 1,4-chrysenequinone (1,4-CQ), a substance in the PAHs group, was tested in a lupus model from FcgRIIb deficiency (FcgRIIb-/-) using macrophages and mice. Although the activation by 1,4-CQ alone was unable to induce inflammation, the pre-conditioning by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a representative inflammatory-activator, before 1,4-CQ (LPS/1,4-CQ) induced more predominant inflammation in macrophages when compared with LPS or 1,4-CQ activation alone as determined by supernatant cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-10). …

Cancer is one of the leading global causes of death. In 2018, WHO estimated that 9.6 million patients died from cancer, with 18.1 million new cases emerged. In recent years, immunotherapy is considered as a treatment improving cancer-related immune function by manipulating the immune checkpoints in the immune system. Cytotoxic-T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4) is a immune checkpoint transmembrane protein. The expression of CTLA-4 on the surface of activated T-cell could downregulate the production and proliferation of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte cells (CTLs). CTLs are the host-defended immune cells that could retard the growth of cancer cells by recognizing the tumor-associated antigens expressed …

Turbulent Flow Of Water-Based Algorithm In Truss Optimization, Saw Thiri Khaing
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis presents the novel Turbulent Flow of Water-based Optimization (TFWO) algorithm for the optimal design of structures under applied forces. The method has been inspired by the natural and random responses of vortices in rivers, seas and oceans. The design problem minimizes the total cost (viz., weight or volume) of the structure with the optimal distribution of its member sizes such that the safety and integrity of the resulting structure can be attained. It is formulated as the challenging nonlinear programming problem under the simultaneous ultimate strength and serviceability criteria. The proposed algorithm is encoded as a MATLAB code …
Synthesis Of Substituted Stilbene Probes Towards The Investigation Of Antagonistic Effects Observed With 3,5-Substituted Paraben Derivatives, Bethany Adams
Longwood Senior Theses
In practice, antagonistic xenoestrogen compounds have been used as drugs to treat cancer. Traditional strategies, include preparation of estrogen receptor antagonists exhibiting high affinity for the receptor while preventing rearrangement of the AF-2 binding domain. In a potentially new strategy, substituted parabens have proven to act as antagonists but do not bear the large sidechain associated with this common antagonist strategy. Weak phenolic interactions make determining such paraben binding confirmations and mode of action difficult. To investigate these activities associated with hindered phenolic compounds, substituted bisphenol probes have been synthesized via Wittig protocols to produce a series of stilbene derivatives. …
