Future Of Thailand's Captive Elephants, Antoinette Van De Water, Michelle Henley, Lucy Bates, Rob Slotow Jan 2020

Future Of Thailand's Captive Elephants, Antoinette Van De Water, Michelle Henley, Lucy Bates, Rob Slotow

Animal Sentience

Removal from natural habitat and commodification as private property compromise elephants’ broader societal value. Although we support Baker & Winkler’s (2020) plea for a new community-based rewilding conservation model focused on mahout culture, we recommend an expanded co-management approach to complement and enhance the regional elephant conservation strategy with additional local community stakeholders and the potential to extend across international borders into suitable elephant habitat. Holistic co-management approaches improve human wellbeing and social cohesion, as well as elephant wellbeing, thereby better securing long-term survival of Asian elephants, environmental justice, and overall sustainability.

A Document Analysis Of Leadership Language That Enhances Family-School Collaboration In Efforts To Narrow The Achievement Gap, Andrew Johnson, Daryl Wright Jan 2020

A Document Analysis Of Leadership Language That Enhances Family-School Collaboration In Efforts To Narrow The Achievement Gap, Andrew Johnson, Daryl Wright

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

Complex problems such as the achievement gap need to be presented to all the stakeholders in the school community to utilize their combined expertise. This requires a specific language to encourage all the stakeholders in the process. Effective leaders achieve this through the principles of transformative leadership by communicating in a way that motivates, challenges, and encourages cooperation. This qualitative comparative case study utilized a document analysis to understand the barriers and solutions to family–school collaboration and leadership solutions to narrow the achievement gap in a highly resourced district. This district recently passed an equity initiative that called for the …

Allelic Variation In Rice Fertilization Independent Endosperm 1 Contributes To Grain Width Under High Night Temperature Stress, Balpreet K. Dhatt, Puneet Paul, Jaspreet Sandhu, Waseem Hussain, Larissa Irvin, Feiyu Zhu, Maria Arlene Adviento-Borbe, Argelia Lorence, Paul Staswick, Hongfeng Yu, Gota Morota, Harkamal Walia

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A higher minimum (night-time) temperature is considered a greater limiting factor for reduced rice yield than a similar increase in maximum (daytime) temperature. While the physiological impact of high night temperature (HNT) has been studied, the genetic and molecular basis of HNT stress response remains unexplored.

We examined the phenotypic variation for mature grain size (length and width) in a diverse set of rice accessions under HNT stress. Genome-wide association analysis identified several HNT-specific loci regulating grain size as well as loci that are common for optimal and HNT stress conditions.

A novel locus contributing to grain width under HNT …

Leveraging Genome-Enabled Growth Models To Study Shoot Growth Responses To Water Deficit In Rice, Malachy T. Campbell, Alexandre Grondin, Harkamal Walia, Gota Morota Jan 2020

Leveraging Genome-Enabled Growth Models To Study Shoot Growth Responses To Water Deficit In Rice, Malachy T. Campbell, Alexandre Grondin, Harkamal Walia, Gota Morota

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

lucidating genotype-by-environment interactions and partitioning its contribution to phenotypic variation remains a challenge for plant scientists. We propose a framework that utilizes genome-wide markers to model genotype-specific shoot growth trajectories as a function of time and soil water availability. A rice diversity panel was phenotyped daily for 21 d using an automated, high-throughput image-based, phenotyping platform that enabled estimation of daily shoot biomass and soil water content. Using these data, we modeled shoot growth as a function of time and soil water content, and were able to determine the time point where an inflection in the growth trajectory occurred. We …

Impacts Of The Reproductive Cycle On The Microbiome: Lessons From Peromyscus Maniculatus, Stephania Jimenez-Castro

McNair Scholars

This low-cost pilot study performed in an animal model attempts to answer the question of whether the estrous cycle affects skin bacteria population size and diversity. In the study, deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are models because the University of Northern Colorado maintains a colony at the animal research facility, and the rodents have a conveniently short reproductive cycle. Vaginal swabs and flushes were collected for two full estrous cycles to obtain cells for determination of the phase of the cycle and flora samples to examine diversity and population size. We witnessed the vaginal flora fluctuate throughout the entire cycle …

Genetic And Functional Analyses Of Virulence Potential Of An Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Strain Isolated From Super-Shedder Cattle, Lin Teng, Shinyoung Lee, Dongjin Park, Kwangcheol Casey Jeong

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 is an enteric pathogen that causes life-threatening disease in humans, with cattle being major natural reservoirs. A group of STEC O157:H7 with a dramatic combination of high virulence potentials and super-shedder bovine origin have been isolated. Here, an STEC O157:H7 isolate, JEONG-1266, was analyzed by comparative genomics, stx genotyping, and phenotypic analyses. The phylogenetic typing and whole-genome comparison consistently showed that JEONG-1266 is genetically close to EC4115 (one of 2006 Spinach outbreak isolates) and SS17 (an isolate from super-shedder cattle) strains, all of which belong to lineage I/II and Clade 8. Both lineage …

Nalini Malani's Medea Project: Gender And Nationhood In Postcolonial India, Maya Varma Jan 2020

Nalini Malani's Medea Project: Gender And Nationhood In Postcolonial India, Maya Varma

Art and Art History Honors Projects

In 1996, renowned contemporary Indian artist Nalini Malani embarked on what would become a decades-long project exploring the Greek myth of Medea as an embodiment of postcolonialism. Considering Medea’s historical interpretations as a mistreated wife and a villainous mother, this thesis examines how Malani transforms Medea into a metaphor of resistance to British colonialism and anticolonial nationalism in post-Partition India. Against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and subsequent political events relating nationhood with the female body, Malani negotiates Medea as an emancipatory figure who shifts essentialized notions of womanhood into more complex narratives of violence, subjectivity, and liberation.

Active Rehabilitation In Sports-Related Concussions: An Educational Intervention For Primary Care Providers, Lior Habinsky

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background and Review of Literature: Sports-related concussion (SRC) is a form of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head and remains a prevalent issue across the 11-18-year-old age group within the United States. Historically, total physical and cognitive rest has been the preferred method to help individuals recover after suffering a concussion. However, recent data have shown that incorporating active rehabilitation or aerobic exercise therapy as part of acute post-concussion treatment is safe. Further investigation into these methods could provide valuable insight into prognosis as well as promote clinical recovery.

Purposes/Goal: This project involved delivering an educational …

Domestic Violence In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (Cald) Communities: Perceptions, Therapeutic Approaches And Responses Of Frontline Workers In New South Wales (Nsw), Oluwatoyin A. Dedeigbo Jan 2020

Domestic Violence In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (Cald) Communities: Perceptions, Therapeutic Approaches And Responses Of Frontline Workers In New South Wales (Nsw), Oluwatoyin A. Dedeigbo

Theses

Domestic violence is a universal public health concern (VicHealth, 2011; World Health Organisation [WHO], 2013). Domestic violence cuts across all countries, regardless of economic, social, cultural or religious differences (Ali et al., 2020; VicHealth, 2011; WHO 2013). Men are often responsible for perpetrating domestic violence against women (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2019; Australia Institute of Health and Welfare [AIHW], 2018).

The effects of domestic violence on victims can be serious and long-term; affecting their physical and mental wellbeing, and lingering even after the exposure to violence has ended (Mitchell, 2011). That is, the effect on victims’ mental health is …

Causes Of Variable Jarrah (Eucalyptus Marginata) And Marri (Corymbia Calophylla) Seedling Density At Establishment Following Bauxite Mining In The Northern Jarrah Forest Of Western Australia, Tai White-Toney Jan 2020

Causes Of Variable Jarrah (Eucalyptus Marginata) And Marri (Corymbia Calophylla) Seedling Density At Establishment Following Bauxite Mining In The Northern Jarrah Forest Of Western Australia, Tai White-Toney

Theses

Seedling densities at establishment of jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata D. Don ex Sm.) and marri (Corymbia calophylla (Lindl). K. D. Hill & L. A. S. Johnson) following bauxite mining in the Northern Jarrah Forest of south-western Australia are variable and few factors explored during 40 years of field studies have explained this variability. This study explored establishment within the framework of limitation due to amount of seed supply and number of suitable microsites for establishment. First, relationships were identified between seedling establishment densities on 654 mine sites restored between 1998 and 2017 and restoration practices (seed and fertiliser application rates), climate …

Historical – Grammatical Analysis Of Worship In Spirit And Truth, Steven Sunthang Jan 2020

Historical – Grammatical Analysis Of Worship In Spirit And Truth, Steven Sunthang

Theses

Since the creation of humankind, God interacts and communicates with them, blessing them to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and have dominion over the creation (Gen. 1:28). God provides clear instructions how to approach him and their surroundings. The method of approaching God is later called “worship.” Over a period of time, humans learned “worship” by themselves, without necessarily following the proper guidelines from God. As a consequence, certain form of worship displeased God. Later, God who became flesh in Jesus (John 1:14) set the rule for worship, that is, “in spirit and truth,” a phrase that is subject …

Times Of The Multitude And The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro Jan 2020

Times Of The Multitude And The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In Nietzsche’s Europeanism Gary Shapiro discerns key resonances of his “great politics of the Earth” out of which those capable of “re-thinking the direction of the earth” may ultimately deploy a “philosophy of the Antichrist” to realize their vision of the future. In considering how philosophers of the future may create the opportune moment in which to revalue all values in such a new direction, Shapiro accounts for Nietzsche’s rejection of the priestly philosophers’ teleological conception of time. He also explicates Nietzsche’s notion of the multitude (Menge), whose diversity contrasts with the homogenous masses and mitigates against the reactionary state.

Cover Crops And Cover Crop Mixes: Stratification Of Biological Effects, Landon M. Gibbs Jan 2020

Cover Crops And Cover Crop Mixes: Stratification Of Biological Effects, Landon M. Gibbs

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The potential nutrient cycling benefits from legumes (e.g. N2-fixation) and the high biomass potential of cereal rye are well known. Further studies are warranted to evaluate bi-culture mixtures and their effects on soil nutrient stratification and microbial enzyme activity because these two properties may be differently expressed (enhanced) by legume/grass mixes. The objectives of this study were: (1) show different cover crops and cover crop mixes containing grasses and legumes differentially stratify carbon and N; (2) show the change in microbial enzyme activity in soils planted with individual cover crops relative to cover crop mixes; 3) determine the …

Nickel Speciation, Microbial Community Structure, And Chemical Attributes In The Rhizosphere Of Nickel Hyperaccumulating And Non-Accumulating Plants Growing In Serpentine Soils, James W. Morris Jan 2020

Nickel Speciation, Microbial Community Structure, And Chemical Attributes In The Rhizosphere Of Nickel Hyperaccumulating And Non-Accumulating Plants Growing In Serpentine Soils, James W. Morris

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Serpentine soils are formed from weathering of serpentinite, the ultramafic parent material that provides serpentine soils with their unique identity. Weathering of serpentinite results in a plethora of edaphic factors that impose strong selection pressures on plant life, with high magnesium (Mg) to calcium (Ca) ratio, low fertility, and high levels of geologically derived metals such as cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni). Appropriately, plant life on serpentine soils is often specialized, sparse, and endemic which in turn affects the ecosystems that develop on serpentine soils from the landscape scale down to the physiology of their inhabitants. At the …

Regulatory Networks During Seed Development, Ran Tian Jan 2020

Regulatory Networks During Seed Development, Ran Tian

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Seeds make up approximately 70% of the human diet directly so understanding regulatory mechanisms to generate a seed and the embryo it contains is fundamentally important. The LAFL genes encode transcription factors (TF) that are critical for seed development. Three members of LAFL, LEAFY COTYLEDON2 (LEC2), ABSCISIC ACID3 (ABI3) and FUSCA3 (FUS3), are B3 domain factors that bind DNA motifs called RY motifs. While LEC2 is expressed earlier in embryo development, ABI3 and FUS3 are expressed during later development. All three of these TFs can induce embryo-specific programs after completion of germination to different extents up to and including formation …

The Hidden Value Of Abandoned Applications To The Patent System, Christopher A. Cotropia, David L. Schwartz Jan 2020

The Hidden Value Of Abandoned Applications To The Patent System, Christopher A. Cotropia, David L. Schwartz

Law Faculty Publications

Some inventors abandon their patent applications without ever receiving a patent. Although patent scholars view such abandoned patent applications as essentially worthless, we question that conventional wisdom. Conducting an empirical analysis of a recently released patent application dataset in light of a 1999 change that requires publication of most abandoned applications, we find that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) often uses abandoned applications as “prior art” when examining future patent applications. Abandoned applications thus generate an “administrative disclosure” that prevents the issuance of broader patent rights to later applicants. By narrowing the scope of new patents, abandoned …

Toxic Floodwaters: Strengthening The Chemical Safety Regime In The Climate Change Era, Noah M. Sachs Jan 2020

Toxic Floodwaters: Strengthening The Chemical Safety Regime In The Climate Change Era, Noah M. Sachs

Law Faculty Publications

Extreme flooding linked to climate change has caused toxic chemical spills across the United States, yet policymakers are not prioritizing industrial chemical safety in planning for climate change. Many scholars and industry executives have argued that existing private law mechanisms, such as insurance and tort-based deterrence, can adequately manage the risk of flood-induced chemical releases from industrial sites. But private law mechanisms have failed to prevent past incidents of mass contamination, and there is little evidence that tort law deters industrial firms from the practices that put communities at risk. In this Article, I engage in a comparative analysis of …

Rivers are characterized by rapid and continuous one-way directional fluxes of flowing, aqueous habitat, chemicals, suspended particles, and resident plankton. Therefore, at any particular location in such systems there is the potential for continuous, and possibly abrupt, changes in diversity and metabolic activities of suspended biota. As microorganisms are the principal catalysts of organic matter degradation and nutrient cycling in …

The Current Application Of The Myriad And Mayo/Alice Rulings On Patent Eligibility: Inconsistent Results And Contradistinguishing Biotechnology Products, Skye Cho Jan 2020

The Current Application Of The Myriad And Mayo/Alice Rulings On Patent Eligibility: Inconsistent Results And Contradistinguishing Biotechnology Products, Skye Cho

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note examines the inconsistent application of the patent eligibility framework under Section 101 of the Patent Act, particularly in biotechnology. It argues that despite efforts by the USPTO to clarify the framework through memos and examples, courts have applied it inconsistently, leading to discrimination against biotechnology products. The analysis focuses on key Supreme Court decisions, such as Myriad Genetics and Mayo, and their impact on the patent eligibility of biotechnological innovations. The note highlights the need for clearer guidance to ensure consistent outcomes and fair treatment of biotechnological inventions.

Copyright Infringement Standards As They Relate To Appropriation Artists, Kimberly Pallen Jan 2020

Copyright Infringement Standards As They Relate To Appropriation Artists, Kimberly Pallen

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The article examines the application of the "total concept and feel" test established in Roth Greeting Cards v. United Card Co. to determine copyright infringement, particularly in cases involving appropriation artists like Jeff Koons and Richard Prince. It argues that while this test is effective for analyzing substantial similarity in visual arts, it faces limitations when applied to appropriation art, where the original work's mood or feel is not significantly altered. The article highlights the subjective nature of the test and its reliance on visual comparison, which may not adequately address the transformative aspects of appropriation art.

Prisonegg, Jonathan Pessant Mfa Jan 2020

Prisonegg, Jonathan Pessant Mfa

All Student Scholarship

Prisonegg is a collection of thirty-two poems centered around the duality of prisons. The poetry comments on how binaries play out in relationships, and how the binary codes of relationships can both imprison and liberate. Sonics-anaphora, rhythm, dissonance play an essential role in the construction of the poetry. The poems in this collection create an ephemeral déjà vu effect with their sounds and imagery. This manuscript is heavily influenced by a speculative/science fiction framework, with authors and poets like William Gibson, Brenda Shaughnessy, Arthur C. Clarke, and Kimiko Hahn inviting the reader to reflect on the many worlds within one …
